Kerosene in the air, awesome engine sound in the ears and my heart pounded wildly. A Yakovlev YAK-40 made me very enthusiastic. The Russian / Soviet aircraft was developed in the 1960s. The Yakovlev YAK-40 (OM-BYL) is owned by the Government of the Slovak Republic for VIP-transport. After a short visit to Berne the aircraft took off at Airport Bern-Belp in Switzerland.
The trijet is powered with three relatively small Ivchenko AI-25 turbofans engines with 14.7 kN (3,300 lbf) of thrust each. The climb rate is painstakingly slow and can be seen in the video. Yet the spectacular view of the Swiss Alps can be enjoyed much longer. The YAK-40 left a characteristic trail of black smoke behind it. The impressive engine sound lies along the upper limit. The cruising speed is 510 km/h at 6,000 m (20,000 ft).

Mit Herzklopfen bis zum Hals stand ich im Belpmoos. Eine Jakowlew Jak-40 hat es mir angetan. Das sowjetische Flugzeuge wurde Anfang der 1960er-Jahre entworfen. Die Jak-40 (OM-BYL) ist im Besitz der slowakischen Regierung für den VIP-Transport. Nach einem Kurzbesuch in Bern, startete die Maschine auf der Piste 14.

Belavia Belarusian Airlines proved to be an enthusiast Airline not only since the recent farewell flights of Tupolev 154.
Back in 2003 Belavia performed two sightseeing flights onboard their late YAK-40 and AN-24 from Berlin to Berlin and later on their TU-134 from Prague to Prague. Despite that Berlin was covered in thick clouds on this misty January day, it was worthwhile to tape this memorable flight above the clouds of Berlin including two low-passes in historic Tempelhof Airport, now closed.
This particular aircraft is now stored at the airport museum of Minsk International Airport (MSQ) carrying the fantasy titles MINSKAVIA.
Enjoy the Sights & Sounds of Classic Aviation.

Yakovlev Yak-40
The Yakovlev Yak-40 (NATO reporting name: Codling) is a small, three-engined airliner. It is the world's first commuter trijet. Maiden flight was made in 1966, and production took place from 1967 to 1981. Introduced in September 1968, the Yak-40 was exported since 1970.
Development
By the early 1960s, the Soviet state airline Aeroflot's international and internal trunk routes were flown by jet or turboprop powered airliners but their local services, many of which operated from grass airfields, were operated by obsolete piston engined aircraft such as the Ilyushin Il-12, Il-14 and Lisunov Li-2. Aeroflot wanted to replace these elderly airliners with a turbine-powered aircraft, with the Yakovlev design bureau being assigned to design the new airliner. High speed was not required, but it would have to operate safely and reliably out of poorly equipped airports with short (less than 700 m, (2,300 ft)) unpaved runways in poor weather.
Yakovlev studied both turboprop and jet-powered designs to meet the requirement, including Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) designs with lift jets in the fuselage or in wing-mounted pods, but eventually they settled on a straight-winged tri-jet carrying 20 to 25 passengers. Engines were to be the new AI-25 turbofan being developed by Ivchenko at Zaporozhye in Ukraine.

In June 2000 I was offered the opportunity to sample life onboard Hemus Air's fleet of YAK-40 and TU-134. I came all the way from Osaka, Japan and was rewarded with a full day of pure flying heaven onboard Hemus Air's oldest YAK-40, LZ-DOR, manufactured in 1972. This day should take us all the way from Sofia to Leipzig, Germany and back again to Sofia, one of the few scheduled rotations of a YAK-40 into EASA Europe. The second flying day took place in perfect weather from Sofia to Athens and back onboard Hemus Air YAK-40 LZ-DOE. This inflight documentary features the first leg from Sofia to Athens. Belavia Belarusian Airlines proved to be an enthusiast Airline not only since the recent farewell flights of Tupolev 154.
Back in 2003 Belavia performed two sightseeing flights onboard their late YAK-40 and AN-24 from Berlin to Berlin and later on their TU-134 from Prague to Prague. Despite that Berlin was covered in thick clouds on this misty January day, it was worthwhile to tape this memorable flight above the clouds of Berlin including two low-passes in historic Tempelhof Airport, now closed.
