Boxing Day sales: ‘I saw a mother use a pushchair as a battering ram’
With reports of retailers offering the biggest discounts for years, shoppers queued through the night to grab the best bargains Boxing Day bargain hunters spent a record £3billion online and in stores across the UK yesterday in the largest sales day for years.
Shoppers queued from 10.30pm on
Christmas Day outside some stores to snap-up the best deals, with a record £
519,
000 spent every minute online.
Despite the spike in sales,
High Streets across Britain were quieter than in recent years with more people than ever choosing to do their shopping from
home.
A sudden onslaught of bad weather also hindered shoppers' plans, with more travel chaos expected today as snow blankets swathes of the country. It comes after millions flocked to online retailers on Christmas Day, spending an estimated £636million. Shoppers visited nearly shopping websites 150million times throughout the day, an increase of around 25 per cent on
Christmas 2013.
Boxing Day saw even more sales, with £519,000 being spent every minute online. The stampede in online traffic meant that shops were quieter than in recent years, though hardy bargain hunters eager not to miss out still queued through the night in some cities. '
There is no doubt that
Black Friday, related pre-Christmas discounting
'It is now time for the high street and shopping centres to take action in ensuring shoppers continue to spend money with them. They may not be able to win in technology and price but they can win in customer experience – bringing back shopping as an enjoyable "national sport." Are these people shopping for discounted goods or are they auditioning for
George A
Romero’s next zombie blockbuster?
Instead of spending time with their families during the “season of goodwill,” hordes of people descended on luxury outlets in
London to feverishly consume whatever they could get their hands on. spokesman for Selfridges said that the queue for the sales began at
11.30 last night – more than nine hours before the doors opened to customers,” states the report.
Black Friday madness has once again descended, with video footage showing people viciously squabbling over TVs and other electronic goods, showcasing the very worst aspects of human nature.
If the clips below are anything to go by, the
United Kingdom is now rivaling
America for Black Friday insanity, with police being called out to numerous stores across the country to deal with fighting and other disturbances.
But that kind of thinking is obviously alien to these zombies, whose rampant materialism has disconnected them from basic human qualities. From a wider perspective, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate between Romero’s
Dawn of the Dead zombies and Black Friday/Boxing Day shoppers. Given their slow movements, the living dead would stand little chance against these rampaging consumer zombies.
This is a “make or break” time of the year for many retailers, and if things don’t turn around during the coming weeks we could see a tsunami of store closings in January and February. As you read this article, there is already more than a billion square feet of retail space sitting empty in the
United States. Many have described the ongoing collapse of the retail industry as an “apocalypse”, and this apocalypse appears to be accelerating.
Yes, the shift to online retailers is a significant factor, but as you will see below even online retailers struggled over the holiday weekend. And with the cost of living constantly rising, family budgets are being squeezed more than ever. That is why families have less money to spend at retail stores these days. For even more on the current financial condition of
American families, please see my previous article entitled “Are You
Better Off This
Thanksgiving Than You Were
Last Thanksgiving?” So what do you think? Are
Americans becoming more greedy and more selfish or are they basically “good” and “decent” people most of the time?
