Bertram "Bert" Stern (October 3, 1929 – June 26, 2013) was a self-taught American commercial photographer.
He was the son of Jewish immigrants and grew up in Brooklyn. His father worked as a children’s portrait photographer. After dropping out of high school at the age of 16, he gained a job in the mail room at Look magazine. He became art director at [Flair] magazine, where Stern learned how to develop film and make contact sheets, and started taking his own pictures. In 1951, Stern was drafted into the US Army and was sent to Japan and assigned to the photographic department.
In the 1960s, his heavy use of amphetamines led to the destruction to his marriage to Allegra Kent, a ballerina. By the late 1970s Stern returned to the U.S. to photograph portraits and fashion.
Stern's first professional assignment was in 1955 for a Madison Avenue advertising agency for Smirnoff vodka. His best known work is arguably The Last Sitting, is a collection of 2,500 photographs taken for Vogue of Marilyn Monroe over a three-day period, six weeks before her death. Stern's book The Last Sitting was published in 1982 and again in 2000.
Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson, June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) was an American actress and model. Famous for playing "dumb blonde" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s, emblematic of the era's attitudes towards sexuality. Although she was a top-billed actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million by the time of her unexpected death in 1962. She continues to be considered a major popular culture icon.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Monroe spent most of her childhood in foster homes and an orphanage and married for the first time at the age of sixteen. While working in a factory as part of the war effort in 1944, she met a photographer and began a successful pin-up modeling career. The work led to two short-lived film contracts with Twentieth Century-Fox (1946–47) and Columbia Pictures (1948). After a series of minor film roles, she signed a new contract with Fox in 1951. Over the next two years, she became a popular actress with roles in several comedies, including As Young as You Feel and Monkey Business, and in the dramas Clash by Night and Don't Bother to Knock. Monroe faced a scandal when it was revealed that she had posed for nude photos before becoming a star, but rather than damaging her career, the story increased interest in her films.
Bert Stern took photos of Marilyn for Vogue Magazine in late June 1962. He ended up taking 1000s of photos of Marilyn over a 3 day period.

Inspiring hundreds of suicides, "Gloomy Sunday" was dubbed the "Hungarian suicide song" in the United States. Composed by Hungarian Rezső Seress in 1933. Seress did commit suicide in 1968, but most other rumors of the song being banned from radio, or sparking suicides, are unsubstantiated, and were partly propagated as a deliberate marketing campaign. This version I used is one of it's many covers but to me the most beautiful next to Rezső's, sung by Sarah McLachlan. I think this song is a beautiful, wonderful piece. I know I took a risk using this but I thought it went well with the emotions of Marilyn Monroe seen in these Bert Stern photos, which were taken in 1962. I think it turned out wonderful and showed the emotion I was trying to portray. Please enjoy. xxo
