Tartu (Estonian pronunciation: [ˈtɑrtˑˈtu], South Estonian: Tarto) is the second largest city of Estonia, following Estonia's political and financial capital Tallinn. Tartu is often considered the intellectual centre of the country, especially since it is home to the nation's oldest and most renowned university, the University of Tartu. The city also houses the Supreme Court of Estonia and the Ministry of Education and Research. Situated 186 kilometres (116 miles) southeast of Tallinn, Tartu lies on the Emajõgi ("Mother river"), which connects the two largest lakes of Estonia. The city is served by Tartu Airport.
Since 1918 the Estonian name Tartu has been used, but as Tartu has been under control of various rulers throughout its history, there are various names for the city in different languages. Most of them derive from the earliest attested form, the Estonian Tarbatu. In German, Swedish and Polish the town has been known and is sometimes still referred to as Dorpat , a variant of Tarbatu. In Russian, the city has been known as Юрьев (Yuryev) after Yaroslav I the Wise and Дерпт (Derpt), the Low German variant of Dorpat. Similarly, the city has been known as Tērbata in Latvian. In Finnish, the toponym is Tartto.
The University of Tartu (Estonian: Tartu Ülikool, Latin: Universitas Tartuensis) is a classical university in the city of Tartu, Estonia. It is the national university of Estonia. University of Tartu is the only classical university in the country and also the biggest and most prestigious university in Estonia.
The University of Tartu is a member of the Coimbra Group and the Utrecht Network. It was established by King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden in 1632, thus being one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe. According to QS World University Rankings it is ranked 400th in the world and the top-ranked university in the Baltics.Times Higher Education World University Rankings places it in the 351–400 range among world universities.
The Academia Gustaviana in the then Swedish province of Livonia was the second university founded in the Swedish Empire, following Uppsala University (in Uppsala, Sweden proper) and preceding the Academy of Åbo (in Turku, Finland). A precursor to the academy had been a Jesuit grammar school Gymnasium Dorpatense, founded by Stefan Batory (then king of Poland–Lithuania) in 1583 and existing to 1601, when Tartu (Dorpat) was under Polish–Lithuanian rule.

http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Tartu is Estonia's second largest city and it was here that independence movements were initiated. An easy public bus and then a long walking tour through Town Hall Square, past the Leaning House and Tartu University built in 1809. Even with damp and dreary weather, the leaves were changing color and Tartu had beauty and charm. It has to be so much fun in July when Tartu gets medieval and holds a Hanseatic Days Festival.
The university city of Tartu sits on the Emajõgi river. The large student population and wealth of museums means that the city is always alive with interesting and new events to entertain you. http://www.visitestonia.com/en/holiday-destinations/city-guides/tartu-tartu-university
