The waltz is a ballroom and folk dance in 
triple (help·info) time, performed primarily in closed position.
There are several references to a sliding or gliding dance,- a waltz, from the 16th century including the representations of the printer H.S. Beheim. The French philosopher Montaigne wrote of a dance he saw in 1580 in Augsburg, where the dancers held each other so closely that their faces touched. Kunz Haas, of approximately the same period wrote that, "Now they are dancing the godless, Weller or Spinner." "The vigorous peasant dancer, following an instinctive knowledge of the weight of fall, utilizes his surplus energy to press all his strength into the proper beat of the measure, thus intensifying his personal enjoyment in dancing". The wide, wild steps of the country people became shorter and more elegant when introduced to higher society. Hans Sachs wrote of the dance in his 1568 Eygentliche Beschreibung aller Stände (1568).
At the Austrian Court in Vienna in the late 17th century (1698) ladies were conducted around the room to the tune of a 2-beat measure, which then became the 3/4 of the Nach Tanz (After Dance), upon which couples got into the position for the Weller and waltzed around the room with gliding steps as in an engraving of the Wirtschaft (Inn Festival) given for Peter the Great.

Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins, CBE (born 31 December 1937), best known as Anthony Hopkins, is a Welsh actor of film, stage and television, and a composer. Considered to be one of the greatest living actors, Hopkins is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Other prominent film credits include The Lion in Winter, Magic, The Elephant Man, 84 Charing Cross Road, Dracula, Legends of the Fall, The Remains of the Day, Amistad, Nixon, The World's Fastest Indian, and Fracture. Hopkins was born and brought up in Wales. Retaining his British citizenship, he became a U.S. citizen on 12 April 2000. Hopkins' films have spanned a wide variety of genres, from family films to horror. As well as his Academy Award, Hopkins has also won three BAFTA Awards, two Emmys and the Cecil B. DeMille Golden Globe Award. Hopkins was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1993 for services to the arts. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003, and was made a Fellow of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2008.

Johann Strauss II (October 25, 1825 – June 3, 1899), also known as Johann Baptist Strauss or Johann Strauss, Jr., the Younger, or the Son (German: Sohn), was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as "The Waltz King", and was largely then responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century.
Strauss was born in St. Ulrich (now a part of Neubau), the son of Johann Strauss I, another composer of dance music. His father did not wish him to become a composer, but rather a banker; however, the son defied his father's wishes, and went on to study music with the composer Joseph Drechsler and the violin with Anton Kollmann, the ballet répétiteur of the Vienna Court Opera. Strauss had two younger brothers, Josef and Eduard Strauss, who became composers of light music as well, although they were never as well known as their elder brother.

Title : Johann Strauss II , The Blue Danube Waltz Date : 1867 From Wikipedia,The Blue Danube is the common English title of An der schönen blauen Donau op. 314 (On the Beautiful Blue Danube), a waltz by Johann Strauss II, composed in 1867. Originally performed 9 February 1867 at a concert of the Wiener Männergesangsverein (Vienna Men's Choral Association), it has been one of the most consistently popular pieces of music in the classical repertoire. Its initial performance was only a mild success, however, and Strauss is reputed to have said "The devil take the waltz, my only regret is for the coda -- I wish that had been a success!" The waltz originally had an accompanying song text written by Josef Weyl. Strauss adapted it into a purely orchestral version for the World's Fair in Paris that same year, and it became a great success in this form. The instrumental version is by far the most commonly performed today. An alternate text by Franz von Gernerth, Donau so blau (Danube so blue), is also used on occasion. The sentimental Viennese connotations of the piece have made it into a sort of unofficial Austrian national anthem. It is a traditional encore piece at the annual Vienna New Year's Concert. The first few bars are also the interval signal of Osterreich Rundfunk's overseas programs. It is reported by composer Norman Lloyd in his "Golden Encyclopedia of Music" that when asked by Frau Strauss for an autograph, the composer Johannes Brahms autographed Mrs. Strauss's fan by writing on it the first few bars of the Blue Danube. Under it he wrote "Unfortunately not by Johannes Brahms".The work commences with an extended introduction in the key of A major with shimmering (tremolo) violins and a French horn spelling out the familiar waltz theme, answered by staccato wind chords, in a subdued mood. It rises briefly into a loud passage but quickly dies down into the same restful nature of the opening bars. A contrasting and quick phrase in D major anticipates the waltz before 3 quiet downward-moving bass notes "usher in" the first principal waltz melody. The first waltz theme is familiar gently rising triad motif in cellos and horns in the tonic D major, accompanied by harps; the Viennese waltz beat is accentuated at the end of each 3-note phrase. The Waltz 1A triumphantly ends its rounds of the motif, and waltz 1B follows in the same key; the genial mood is still apparent. Waltz 2A glides in quietly (still in D major) before a short contrasting middle section in B flat major. The entire section is repeated. A more dour waltz 3A is introduced in G major before a fleeting eighth-note melodic phrase (waltz 3B). An loud Intrada (introduction) is then played. Waltz 4A starts off in a romantic mood (F major) before a more joyous waltz 4B in the same key. After another short Intrada in A, cadencing in F-sharp minor, sonorous clarinets spell out the poignant melody of waltz 5A in A. Waltz 5B is the climax, punctuated by cymbal crashes. Each of these may be repeated at the discretion of the performer. The coda recalls earlier sections (3A and 2A) before furious chords usher in a recap of the romantic Waltz 4A. The idyll is cut short as the waltz hurries back to the famous waltz theme 1A again. This statement is cut short, however, by the final codetta: a variation of 1A is presented, connecting to a rushing eighth-note passage in the final few bars: repeated tonic chords underlined by a snare drumroll and a bright-sounding flourish.

From Wikipedia,The Blue Danube is the common English title of An der schönen blauen Donau op. 314 (On the Beautiful Blue Danube), a waltz by Johann Strauss II, composed in 1867. Originally performed 9 February 1867 at a concert of the Wiener Männergesangsverein (Vienna Men's Choral Association), it has been one of the most consistently popular pieces of music in the classical repertoire. Its initial performance was only a mild success, however, and Strauss is reputed to have said "The devil take the waltz, my only regret is for the coda -- I wish that had been a success!"
The waltz originally had an accompanying song text written by Josef Weyl. Strauss adapted it into a purely orchestral version for the World's Fair in Paris that same year, and it became a great success in this form. The instrumental version is by far the most commonly performed today. An alternate text by Franz von Gernerth, Donau so blau (Danube so blue), is also used on occasion.
The sentimental Viennese connotations of the piece have made it into a sort of unofficial Austrian national anthem. It is a traditional encore piece at the annual Vienna New Year's Concert. The first few bars are also the interval signal of Osterreich Rundfunk's overseas programs.
It is reported by composer Norman Lloyd in his "Golden Encyclopedia of Music" that when asked by Frau Strauss for an autograph, the composer Johannes Brahms autographed Mrs. Strauss's fan by writing on it the first few bars of the Blue Danube. From Wikipedia,The Blue Danube is the common English title of An der schönen blauen Donau op. 314 (On the Beautiful Blue Danube), a waltz by Johann Strauss II, composed in 1867. Originally performed 9 February 1867 at a concert of the Wiener Männergesangsverein (Vienna Men's Choral Association), it has been one of the most consistently popular pieces of music in the classical repertoire. Its initial performance was only a mild success, however, and Strauss is reputed to have said "The devil take the waltz, my only regret is for the coda -- I wish that had been a success!"
The waltz originally had an accompanying song text written by Josef Weyl. Strauss adapted it into a purely orchestral version for the World's Fair in Paris that same year, and it became a great success in this form. The instrumental version is by far the most commonly performed today. An alternate text by Franz von Gernerth, Donau so blau (Danube so blue), is also used on occasion.
The sentimental Viennese connotations of the piece have made it into a sort of unofficial Austrian national anthem. It is a traditional encore piece at the annual Vienna New Year's Concert. The first few bars are also the interval signal of Osterreich Rundfunk's overseas programs.
It is reported by composer Norman Lloyd in his "Golden Encyclopedia of Music" that when asked by Frau Strauss for an autograph, the composer Johannes Brahms autographed Mrs. Strauss's fan by writing on it the first few bars of the Blue Danube. Aaron: And we are professional dance instructors here in New York City, and today we're going to bringing you a series based on the waltz.
Kristina: So the first step we're going to do is the box step which is like the most common foundational step for everything you're going to learn in the waltz. So just a couple of things really quickly. The waltz is a smooth dance, which means it travels around the room in a counter-clockwise direction, so if you're ever anywhere where there are people dancing, just kind of take note of the direction that they're going and make sure you join in and go that same direction.
So we're going to start this pattern side by side. We're both going to begin with our left foot going forward. The girls just note that generally you will generally be starting this on your right foot going backward. So we're going to take our left foot. We have one step forward, one. Step to the side with your right foot, two. Close your left foot to your right foot, three. And then go ahead and take a step back on the right, side left, close right foot to left foot. So we have one, two, three, one two, three.
And so a note for this, if you've ever seen waltz dancing, there is a rise and fall to this dance, so the downbeat is on one so we're going to call it, in its most basic terms, going forward, down, up, up, down, up, up. And that's just a really basic way to kind of get you familiar with the rise and fall of the waltz. You can kind of try to add that in. So let's dance this with a partner.
So we're going to take our traditional dance hold, palm to palm, and then girls you're going to take your right hand and place it just below the shoulder. Gentlemen your left hand will be in her palm, right hand will be on her shoulder blade. So, another important note. When you set up, be slightly offset. So girls think about stepping slightly to the left. Guys, think about having her slightly to her right. That way you won't hit feet when you try to dance. So we have one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three. We can also take this basic step and we can rotate it to the left a little bit, so we'll show you that right now. And one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three. Now let's try that to some music.

It is interesting to reflect that Johann Strauss II's An der schönen blauen Donau (By the beautiful blue Danube), the most famous of all orchestral waltzes, was conceived and first performed as a showpiece for male voice choir. The work was Johann's first choral waltz, written as a commission for the Wiener Mannergesang-Verein (Vienna Men's Choral Association) with whom he was to enjoy a close association over the years, creating for the choir a total of six choral master waltzes, two polkas and a march. Strauss began sketching themes for the waltz, which would eventually bear the title An der schönen blauen Donau, in autumn 1866, and originally submitted to the Association a four-part unaccompanied chorus comprising just four waltz sections and a brief Coda, but without Introduction. ... -

It´s New Year´s Day 2010 and as usual the Vienna Philharmonic are playing their Neujahrskonzert (New Year´s Concert) in my hometown (which is of course Vienna). Each and every year their programme consists of hardly anything else but stupid waltzes, so I thought it´s time for a personal contribution... But seriously: the idea for this waltz came up about ten years ago. Melody and chords were fully improvised and written down within a few minutes. As usual the arrangement took a little longer (although not ten years as you might think). Like the vast majority of waltzes this isn´t great by any means. It´s a foolish little melody but maybe still enjoyable. Have fun! -

Images of the Disney's Sleeping Beauty . The Sleeping Beauty (Russian: Спящая красавица, Spyashchaya krasavitsa) is a ballet in a prologue and three acts, first performed in 1890. The music was by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (his Opus 66). The score was completed in 1889, and is the second of his three ballets. The original scenario was conceived by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, and is based on Charles Perrault's La Belle au bois dormant. The choreographer of the original production was Marius Petipa. The premiere performance took place at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1890. It is interesting to reflect that Johann Strauss II's An der schönen blauen Donau (By the beautiful blue Danube), the most famous of all orchestral waltzes, was conceived and first performed as a showpiece for male voice choir. The work was Johann's first choral waltz, written as a commission for the Wiener Mannergesang-Verein (Vienna Men's Choral Association) with whom he was to enjoy a close association over the years, creating for the choir a total of six choral master waltzes, two polkas and a march.
Strauss began sketching themes for the waltz, which would eventually bear the title An der schönen blauen Donau, in autumn 1866, and originally submitted to the Association a four-part unaccompanied chorus comprising just four waltz sections and a brief Coda, but without Introduction. A hastily written piano accompaniment followed soon afterwards, and then a fifth waltz section. The orchestral accompaniment, together with the distinctive Introduction, was provided only shortly before the first performance which took place at Vienna's Dianabad-Saal ballroom during the Association's "Faschings-Liedertafel" (Carnival Programme of Songs) on 15 February 1867. In the absence of the composer, who was appearing with the Strauss Orchestra at the Imperial Court on the night of the première, the members of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein were conducted by their chorus-master, Rudolf Weinwurm, and accompanied by the orchestra of the 'Georg V, König von Hannover' Infantry Regiment No. 42, which was temporarily stationed in Vienna. The original, satirical, text had been furnished by the Association's own 'house poet', Josef Weyl (1821-95), although a new text was added in 1890 by Franz von Gernerth (1821-1900) which was more suited to non-carnival occasions and commenced with the now familiar words: "Donau so blau ..." (Danube so blue...)
The Viennese were treated to the first purely orchestral rendition of An der schönen blauen Donau - complete with Introduction and full-length Coda - on Sunday 10 March 1867 in the Volksgarten at the Strauss Orchestra's annual "Carnival Revue", which took the form a "Benefit Concert by Josef and Eduard Strauss, with the participation of Johann Strauss, Imperial-Royal Court Ball Music Director". This date is further confirmed by an entry in Josef Strauss's diary. Johann himself conducted this performance of his waltz, which featured as the third item on a programme presenting no less than twenty-four novelties composed for that year's carnival celebrations by the three Strauss brothers. Perhaps surprisingly, in view of the unanimous praise lavished by the Viennese press upon the choral première of the work, the orchestral version of An der schönen blauen Donau did not attract special attention from the critics, the Neues Fremden-Blatt (11.03.1867) merely noting that "every piece met with the most undivided applause, which now and then increased to tempestuous enthusiasm, and everything had to be repeated. The three brothers celebrated in this concert the greatest triumph in the sphere of Viennese dance music".
During the 1867 Carnival, An der schönen blauen Donau was merely regarded as a pearl amongst many others, and only a little later did the unique position which it was to assume, and maintain, as the unofficial national anthem of both Vienna and Austria, become evident. The new waltz was in the composer's luggage which he took with him to Paris in summer 1867, where it was played on 28 May at the glittering Austrian Embassy Ball given by the Ambassador, Prince Richard Metternich, and his wife, Princess Pauline, benefiting considerably from an attendance by the élite of international society. An Englishwoman who was present at this event, Mrs Charles Moulton (later Madame de Hegermann-Lindencrone), wrote home enthusiastically the following day: "The famous Johann Strauss, brought from Vienna especially for this occasion, stood waiting with uplifted baton and struck up the 'Blue Danube', heard for the first time in Paris... And how Strauss played it!... With what fire and 'entrain'!". It did not take long for the reputation of the work to spread much further afield, and on 1 July 1867 Theodore Thomas conducted its first American performance in New York with his own orchestra, an ensemble which later became the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A little less than twelve weeks later, on 21 September 1867, the composer conducted the British première of the work (in a choral version with a 100-strong male voice choir) at London's Royal Italian Opera House, Covent Garden, afterwards noting in his diary: "tremendous tumult and rejoicing!!!".

El ballet "El Cascanueces", fue estrenado el 17 de diciembre de 1892, en el legendario teatro Mariinskji de San Petersburgo con la coreografía original de Lev Ivanov, el libro de Marius Petipa y la música de Piotr I. Tchaikovski.
La primera historia que se conoce de "El Cascanueces" está basada en el libro de cuentos de Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, titulado: "El Cascanueces y el Rey de los ratones" (1816). Sin embargo, el argumento que daría vida, años más tarde al ballet deriva de una adaptación que Alejandro Dumas (padre) hiciera del texto de Hoffmann.
Esta obra consolidó a Tchaikovski como el más importante compositor de música para ballet, famoso además por obras como "El Lago de los Cisnes" y "La Bella Durmiente".
Sinopsis argumental:
Es Nochebuena y la ilusión se vive en el ambiente. Una niña y su hermano esperan vivir una noche mágica. Al llegar al salón, algo les sorprende: un árbol de Navidad iluminado y repleto de juguetes y golosinas.
El excéntrico padrino de los niños ha construido un fabuloso castillo por el que pasean y danzan elegantes damas y caballeros.
La niña recibe el obsequio de un cascanueces (soldadito de madera que sirve para romper la cáscara de las nueces). En sus sueños, ella verá al juguete convertirse en príncipe y a partir de ahí aparecerán en escena las fantasías y aventuras de esta niña tan especial.
La música del ballet de Tchaikovski es una de sus partituras más populares, pertenece al período romántico y contiene unas de sus melodías más memorables "La Trepak" o danza rusa es una de las piezas más reconocidas del ballet, junto con los famosos "Vals de las Flores" y Marcha, y además la ubicua "Danza de la Hada de Azúcar". El ballet contiene armonías sorprendentemente avanzadas.

It´s New Year´s Day 2010 and as usual the Vienna Philharmonic are playing their Neujahrskonzert (New Year´s Concert) in my hometown (which is of course Vienna)....
It´s New Year´s Day 2010 and as usual the Vienna Philharmonic are playing their Neujahrskonzert (New Year´s Concert) in my hometown (which is of course Vienna). Each and every year their programme consists of hardly anything else but stupid waltzes, so I thought it´s time for a personal contribution...
But seriously: the idea for this waltz came up about ten years ago. Melody and chords were fully improvised and written down within a few minutes. As usual the arrangement took a little longer (although not ten years as you might think). Like the vast majority of waltzes this isn´t great by any means. It´s a foolish little melody but maybe still enjoyable. Have fun!

On 8 March 1880 the Imperial Court in Vienna let it be known that the Emperor's son, the Crown Prince Rudolf (1858-89), had announced his engagement in Brussels to Princess Stephanie (1864-1945), second daughter of the reigning Belgian monarch Leopold II. The wedding was to take place in Vienna on 10 May of the following year and the municipal council there lost no time in commissioning Johann Strauss to compose music for a festival performance to be given in celebration of the marriage. Putting aside work on his operetta, Das Spitzentuch der Königin [Première: Theater an der Wien, Vienna. 1 October 1880], Strauss sketched a large-scale work. However, after he had drafted eleven numbers, the city fathers relinquished their plans for such a grand spectacle and instead gave the brothers Johann and Eduard Strauss free rein as to the compositions with which they would honour the royal couple and at which events they would perform these works. Thereupon Johann accepted an invitation from the Wiener Männergesang-Verein, and for this joint venture conceived a waltz for male chorus and orchestra which he first entitled Myrthensträusse (Myrtle Bouquets) and later re-named Myrthenblüthen. The work remains one of the loveliest of all Johann Strauss's creations in three-quarter-time, and is allied to a text by August Seuffert (1844-1904) who had earlier provided the words for Strauss's choral French polka, Burschenwanderung op. 389. Seuffert's Myrthenblüthen text presented impressionistic pictures of nature through the seasons, closing with lines addressed to the 17-year-old bride: "Your new Fatherland/greets you today with heart and hand/Belgium's royal child!/Northern rosebud/The south greets you/aglow with love!".
The dress rehearsal for the new waltz took place on 6 May 1881 in the Musikverein building when the composer conducted the Wiener Männergesang-Verein with orchestral accompaniment. A report on this rehearsal reads: "The singers greeted the Maestro upon his appearance with spirited applause, which intensified still more after the close of the number. Real Vienna blood pulses through Strauss's newest composition". The first public performance of Myrthenblüthen followed on 8 May at a festival in the Vienna Prater, with the composer conducting the orchestra of the Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, Infantry Regiment. The waltz was received with jubilation by the 20,000-strong Viennese crowded around 'Am Rustenschacher' (the Rustenschacherallee), and the occasion was chronicled by, among others, the reporter for the Neue Freie Presse (9.05.1881): "And then, when the Maestro Johann Strauss appeared on the conductor's platform, which was decorated with brushwood, there was an unending roaring, shouts of hurrah and waving of hats and handkerchiefs! Thus the multitude was able to document very clearly that a right, regular public entertainment in Vienna is unthinkable without a waltz by Strauss. And the new waltz? It will soon no longer be new, because within a few days everyone in Vienna, as well as beyond the precincts of the city, will be singing these sweet sensual tunes. 'Myrthensträusse' is, in fact, a bouquet of fragrant melodies, not of the gripping, singable type of the 'Blue Danube', but delicate and tingling. The two pieces of music behave towards one another like wine to champagne. There was a storm of applause which split the air after the first performance of the waltz, and it looked more like an act of self-defence against this attempted assassination by applause when the composer and singers hastily decided to sing the new waltz again to the joy of the delighted listeners¡¨. The letter of thanks which the Mayor of Vienna wrote to Johann Strauss a few days later, enclosing two specially struck Crown Prince Rudolf Wedding Medals, mentioned nothing of the absence of1he bridal pair from the scene of this first performance. They, together with the Austrian Emperor, had been prevented from reaching the venue by the huge crowd of well wishers blocking the main route along the Prater.
The Wiener Männergesang-Verein repeated Myrthenblüthen at their 'Summer Song Programme' at the 'Neue Welt' entertainment venue in Hietzing on 14 July 1881, this time accompanied by the Strauss Orchestra under Johann's direction. Remarkably, following this performance the Association did not sing this delightful work again until after the First World War.

The wedding was to take place in Vienna on 10 May of the following year and the municipal council there lost no time in commissioning Johann Strauss to compose music for a festival performance to be given in celebration of the marriage. Putting aside work on his operetta, Das Spitzentuch der Königin [Première: Theater an der Wien, Vienna. 1 October 1880], Strauss sketched a large-scale work. However, after he had drafted eleven numbers, the city fathers relinquished their plans for such a grand spectacle and instead gave the brothers Johann and Eduard Strauss free rein as to the compositions with which they would honour the royal couple and at which events they would perform these works. Thereupon Johann accepted an invitation from the Wiener Männergesang-Verein, and for this joint venture conceived a waltz for male chorus and orchestra which he first entitled Myrthensträusse (Myrtle Bouquets) and later re-named Myrthenblüthen. The work remains one of the loveliest of all Johann Strauss's creations in three-quarter-time, and is allied to a text by August Seuffert (1844-1904) who had earlier provided the words for Strauss's choral French polka, Burschenwanderung op. 389. Seuffert's Myrthenblüthen text presented impressionistic pictures of nature through the seasons, closing with lines addressed to the 17-year-old bride: "Your new Fatherland/greets you today with heart and hand/Belgium's royal child!/Northern rosebud/The south greets you/aglow with love!".
The dress rehearsal for the new waltz took place on 6 May 1881 in the Musikverein building when the composer conducted the Wiener Männergesang-Verein with orchestral accompaniment. A report on this rehearsal reads: "The singers greeted the Maestro upon his appearance with spirited applause, which intensified still more after the close of the number. Real Vienna blood pulses through Strauss's newest composition". The first public performance of Myrthenblüthen followed on 8 May at a festival in the Vienna Prater, with the composer conducting the orchestra of the Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, Infantry Regiment. The waltz was received with jubilation by the 20,000-strong Viennese crowded around 'Am Rustenschacher' (the Rustenschacherallee), and the occasion was chronicled by, among others, the reporter for the Neue Freie Presse (9.05.1881): "And then, when the Maestro Johann Strauss appeared on the conductor's platform, which was decorated with brushwood, there was an unending roaring, shouts of hurrah and waving of hats and handkerchiefs! Thus the multitude was able to document very clearly that a right, regular public entertainment in Vienna is unthinkable without a waltz by Strauss. And the new waltz? It will soon no longer be new, because within a few days everyone in Vienna, as well as beyond the precincts of the city, will be singing these sweet sensual tunes. 'Myrthensträusse' is, in fact, a bouquet of fragrant melodies, not of the gripping, singable type of the 'Blue Danube', but delicate and tingling. The two pieces of music behave towards one another like wine to champagne. There was a storm of applause which split the air after the first performance of the waltz, and it looked more like an act of self-defence against this attempted assassination by applause when the composer and singers hastily decided to sing the new waltz again to the joy of the delighted listeners¡¨. The letter of thanks which the Mayor of Vienna wrote to Johann Strauss a few days later, enclosing two specially struck Crown Prince Rudolf Wedding Medals, mentioned nothing of the absence of1he bridal pair from the scene of this first performance. They, together with the Austrian Emperor, had been prevented from reaching the venue by the huge crowd of well wishers blocking the main route along the Prater.
The Wiener Männergesang-Verein repeated Myrthenblüthen at their 'Summer Song Programme' at the 'Neue Welt' entertainment venue in Hietzing on 14 July 1881, this time accompanied by the Strauss Orchestra under Johann's direction. Remarkably, following this performance the Association did not sing this delightful work again until after the First World War.

Wiener Bonbons, one of the most inspired and popular of Johann Strauss's waltzes, owes its origins to the ball of the Association of Industrial Societies held in the Redoutensaal ballroom of the Imperial Hofburg Palace, Vienna, on 28 January 1866.
Even a year before composing the most famous of all waltzes, An der schönen blauen Donau (By the beautiful blue Danube, 1867), Johann had begun to draw back a little from the arduous business of writing waltzes and had been pleased to allow his younger brother, Josef, not only to compose the due dedication for the Industrial Societies' festivity but also to conduct it on the night of the ball. It then became known that honorary patronage of the event had been accepted by Princess Pauline Metternich-Winneburg (1836-1921), the highly respected wife of the Austrian Ambassador in Paris, and that she had asked for the proceeds from the ball to be donated to the construction of a hospital for Germans in the French capital. For this reason Josef entitled his waltz Deutsche Grüße (German Greetings, op. 191), and dedicated it to the patroness who was present at the ball. In addition he altered his plans to conduct the first performance of a new polka-mazurka, entitled Pauline (op. 190a), at a Strauss benefit ball in the Sofienbad-Saal on 29 January, playing it instead at the ball of the Industrial Societies as a further tribute to the princess. Shortly before the Industrial Societies' Ball, however, Johann chose to contribute a waltz of his own to the festivity, a dance combining the traditional Viennese Waltz with Parisian flair and which even united the languages of both nations in its title - Wiener Bonbons! The waltz was published by C.A. Spina on 13 February 1866 and its delightful title page illustration, showing the work's title fashioned from twisted bonbon wrappers, bore its composer's dedication to "her Highness the Princess Pauline Metternich-Winneburg, nee Countess Sándor, in deepest respect".
Princess Pauline was not only an influential figure in Vienna, but was also highly active at the Imperial court of Napoléon III in Paris. The two Strauss brothers therefore openly courted her support, knowing that her connections could assist them in their plans to give concerts at the 1867 World Exhibition in the French capital. To this end the brothers intended to make an exploratory joint visit there during Easter 1866, just weeks after the Industrial Societies' Ball. The Sleeping Beauty (Russian: Спящая красавица, Spyashchaya krasavitsa) is a ballet in a prologue and three acts, first performed in 1890. The music was by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (his Opus 66). The score was completed in 1889, and is the second of his three ballets. The original scenario was conceived by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, and is based on Charles Perrault's La Belle au bois dormant. The choreographer of the original production was Marius Petipa.
The premiere performance took place at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1890. The work is widely regarded as Tchaikovsky's finest ballet score, and has become one of the classical repertoire's most famous ballets.
Tchaikovsky was approached by the Director of the Imperial Theatres in St. Petersburg, Ivan Vsevolozhsky on 25 May 1888 about a possible ballet adaptation on the subject of the story of Undine. It was later decided that Charles Perrault's La Belle au bois dormant would be the story for which Tchaikovsky would compose the music for the ballet. Tchaikovsky did not hesitate to accept the commission, although he was aware that his only previous ballet, Swan Lake, met with little enthusiasm at that stage of his career. The ballet scenario that Tchaikovsky worked on was based on the Brothers Grimm's version of Perrault's work entitled 'Dornröschen'. In that version, the Princess's parents (the King and the Queen) survived the 100-year sleep to celebrate the Princess's wedding to the Prince. However, Vsevolozhsky incorporated some of Perrault's characters from other stories into the ballet, such as Puss in Boots and Little Red Riding Hood. Regardless, Tchaikovsky was happy to inform the Director of the Imperial Theatre that he had great pleasure studying the work and had come away with adequate inspiration to do it justice.[citation needed]
The choreographer was Marius Petipa, ballet master of the Imperial Ballet, who wrote a very detailed list of instructions as to the musical requirements. Tchaikovsky worked quickly on the new work at Frolovskoye; he began initial sketches in the winter of 1888 and began orchestration on the work on 30 May 1889.
The ballet's focus was undeniably on the two main conflicting forces of good (the Lilac Fairy) and evil (Carabosse); each has a leitmotif representing them, which run through the entire ballet, serving as an important thread to the underlying plot. Act III of the work, however, takes a complete break from the two motifs and instead places focus on the individual characters of the various court dances.
