Jon-Erik Hexum (November 5, 1957 – October 18, 1984) was an American model and actor. He died as a result of an accidental self-inflicted blank cartridge gunshot round to the head on the set of the CBS television series Cover Up in which he played the male lead.
Hexum was born in Englewood, New Jersey, to Gretha and Thorleif Hexum, who were of Norwegian descent. He and his elder brother, Gunnar, were raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, by their mother after their parents divorced when Hexum was four. After graduating from high school, Hexum went on to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, in order to study biomedical engineering. He soon left that university, however, and transferred to Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. During that time, he worked as a radio disc jockey, played football, and acted in minor stage roles.
Only a few days after graduation, he moved to New York in 1980, in order to pursue his acting career. While working as an apartment cleaner, he met Bob LeMond of LeMond/Zetter Management, the manager of John Travolta. LeMond saw great potential in Hexum. At LeMond's urging, Hexum relocated to Los Angeles in September 1981 in order to audition for a movie called Summer Lovers, which was to be directed by Randal Kleiser. Though he lost the part to Peter Gallagher, Hexum attracted the notice of Hollywood powerbrokers, and in short time was cast in the lead role of Phineas Bogg in the NBC series Voyagers! after playing the character in Voyager from the Unknown, the pilot for the series.Voyagers! aired during the 1982–83 television season, with Hexum's role earning him $10,000 a week. Unable to sustain itself against CBS' newsmagazine, 60 Minutes, Voyagers! was canceled after one season. But Hexum's good looks and charm kept him marketable, and soon he was cast opposite Joan Collins in the made-for-television movie Making of a Male Model, starring also Jeff Conaway and Roxie Roker.
Mervyn Edward "Merv" Griffin, Jr. (July 6, 1925 – August 12, 2007) was a U.S. television host, musician, singer, actor, and media mogul. He began his career as a radio and big band singer who went on to appear in film and on Broadway. From 1965 to 1986 Griffin hosted his own talk show, The Merv Griffin Show, produced by Westinghouse Broadcasting (also known as Group W). He also created the game shows Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, Click, Ruckus, and Merv Griffin's Crosswords with his own television production companies, Merv Griffin Enterprises and Merv Griffin Entertainment. During his lifetime, Griffin was considered an entertainment business magnate.
Griffin was born into a Irish American family on July 6, 1925, in San Mateo, California to Mervyn Edward Griffin, Sr., a stock-broker, and Rita Elizabeth Griffin (née Robinson), a homemaker. Raised as a Roman Catholic, Griffin started singing in his church choir as a boy, and by his teens was earning extra money as a church organist. His abilities as a pianist played a part in his early entry into show business.
This may be Jon-Erik Hexum's last television appearance as he tragically died in an on-set accident just a month after filming this interview with Merv. He opens up to Merv about his frugal lifestyle, his new show and performing a citizen's arrest on a drunk driver the previous night. Merv Griffin had over 5000 guests appear on his show from 1963-1986. Footage from the Merv Griffin Show is available for licensing to all forms of media through Reelin' In The Years Productions. http://www.reelinintheyears.com.
I found this on an old disc which I bought before I became a member of the fanclub. It consists of parts of the news coverage following Jon-Erik Hexum's accidental shooting, his time in coma and his death. It's not real HD, of course, since this has been taped from TV by fans in 1984 . The exact circumstances of his accident have never been fully uncovered, so any speculations of the journalists here remain speculations, even today. Side Note: Nick Clooney (the anchorman with the white hair at the beginning) is George Clooney's dad.

My favorite scene in the episode, 'the meeting' is sweet and romantic. Americanized Prince Erik comes to stay at the plush 'St. Gregory' and falls head over heels in love with the sweet and beautiful Kathleen, an Irish maid for a rich family also just arrived. In this clip he invites her to the ball. A very Cinderellaesque plot.

According to the Don Harron Show episode guide this is Jon-Erik Hexum's last TV interview, they aired it on December 17.
Really Nice collages of Jon modeling and speaking about how his good looks can be a detriment to his career. He certainly was leading man material. Interviewer is Tawny Little.
From P.M. Magazine, A 1983 interview by Eric Paulsen (Jon's 1st Cousin) that showcases Hexum's views on his 'hunk' status, and his excellent talents in diving and piano. Sorry, don't know what show this is. Jon talks about his role in the 'Bear,' his new crew cut, football, stunt men and of course, addresses those inevitable questions about his 'beefcake' & hunk status. He's most gracious to the hostess, making her blush happily by answering her odd college question. LOL. I LOVE how he makes it clear that what you see on screen and magazines is not him, just an image.

26-year-old actor Jon-Erik Hexum died on October 18, 1984, nearly a week after accidentally shooting himself with a blank gun on the set of his CBS series, Cover Up. But thanks to his generosity in life and that of his family, his tragic story had a positive impact on the lives of many others, in the form of organ donations. The 80's newsmagazine, West 57th, interviews Michael Washington, the man who received his heart in this August 1985 edition. Washington himself passed away on December 14, 2002.
