H&K; VP-70M on the Range: How Useful is the Burst Fire?

Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! http://shop.bbtv.com/collections/forgotten-weapons
After looking at the history and mechanics of the VP-70 yesterday, we are heading out to the range to try it out (and thanks to Trijicon for generously offering use of their range!). I am curious to see just what that 2200 rpm rate of fire is like to shoot, and whether the awful trigger is as much of a hindrance to effective burst shooting as it is to simple semiauto. So, in addition to some shooting of the VP-70M, I will also be comparing it to an MP5...

Heckler & Koch VP70
It was the first polymer-framed pistol and pre-dates the Glock 17 by 12 years. The weapon weighed 820 g (28.9 oz) unloaded, lighter than most other metal framed pistols of the time.
The stock incorporates a selector switch that, when mounted, allows selective fire. Cyclic rate of fire for the three-round burst is 2200 rounds per minute. When not mounted, the stock acts as a holster.

H&K; became a household name because of their rifles, but their innovative pistols certainly shouldn't be overlooked either. In this episode of TFBTV we shoot the VP70 pistol, the first handgun ever to make use of a polymer frame.

HK VP70Z - The best polymer handgun of all time?
While the VP70 and VP70Z are innovative firearms that beat everyone else to market with the first polymer framed, striker fired pistol... it was far from a perfect design. Actually, the VP70 was a horrible design and a commercial flop for HK. Despite this, it's a cool piece of firearms history.

Heckler and Koch VP70 Target of Opportunity Video
In this video, we take a quick look at one of the most interesting handguns from Heckler and Koch's legacy line. I believe that if you can understand the historical background leading up to this pistol and the simplistic approach that H&K; followed in order to satisfy this German military requirement, you can better appreciate one of H&K;'s earliest pistol designs.
Huge thanks to H&K; for allowing me access to their Gray Room in order to film this video. For more information on the VP70 series, check out Volume 1 of the Vickers Guide Heckler and Koch series, available at Vickersguide.com or my thorough review of the VP70 series on my channel, linked here:

3D Animation: How a Heckler & Koch VP70 works
The Heckler & Koch VP70 was a double-action-only, polymer frame pistol chambered in 9mm (9×19mm Luger) with a 18-round magazine. It was manufactured by German gun manufacturer Heckler & Koch from 1970–1989. It was the first polymer-framed pistol in the world, predating the Glock 17 by 12 years. The "M" (military) variant featured select-fire (semi-auto or three-round bursts) and a attachable stock that could be used as a holster (like the Mauser C96). The select-fire switch was located on the stock.

The VP70 is a 9 mm, 18-round( 10rds in Canada), double action only, semi-automatic/three-round burst capable polymer frame pistol manufactured by German arms firm Heckler & Koch GmbH. VP stands for Vollautomatische Pistole[1] (literally "Fully Automatic Pistol"), and the designation 70 was for the year of the first edition: 1970.
It was the first polymer-framed pistol and predates the Glock 17 by 12 years. The weapon weighed 820 g (28.9 oz) unloaded, lighter than most other metal framed pistols of the time. Although it was the first polymer pistol, the Remington Nylon 66 rifle introduced in 1959 was the first polymer-framed firearm in production.
One unique feature of this weapon involved the combination stock/holster for the martial version of the VP70. The stock incorporates a selector switch that, when mounted, allows selective fire. Cyclic rate of fire for the three-round burst is 2200 rounds per minute. When not mounted, the stock acts as a holster. The VP70 uses a spring-loaded striker like a Glock, instead of a conventional firing pin. It is double action only so the trigger pull is relatively heavy. In lieu of a blade front sight, the VP70 uses a polished ramp with a central notch in the middle to provide the illusion of a dark front post. Contrary to a common misconception, the VP70 does indeed have a manual safety. It is the circular button located immediately behind the trigger and is a common crossblock safety.
The handgun comes in two varieties. The "Z" (Zivil, civilian) variant is a semiautomatic only version, and although many have no provision to mount a stock, some of them can have a stock fitted after minor alterations to the handgrip (however they remain semiautomatic only); the "M" (Militär, military) variant is burst capable. The VP70 was produced from 1970 until 1989. Four hundred VP70-Z pistols were made chambered in 9x21mm IMI; these samples were made primarily for the civilian market of Italy, where the use of the 9x19mm Parabellum is a sole privilege of military and law enforcement agencies. All of the VP70-Z pistols sold in Italy can mount the stock-holster but are not selective-fire capable.
