A western girl moves east and influenced badly by her snobby fiancé. She returns to sell her deceased father's ranch. The father isn't really dead, though; he's hoping that his friend Roy can restore the girl's western values.
When John Barrabbee's plane makes an emergency landing, he wanders off and joins Roy's cattle drive. Later he learns he was killed when his plane resumed its flight and crashed. He also learns his daughter is going to sell his ranch and marry a man he dislikes. So he gives Roy a job on the ranch and sends him off to see if he can prevent both of these events while he remains in hiding.
YOU'LL CHEER! YOU'LL APPLAUD! YOU'LL LOVE ROY ROGERS in this new song-filled super-adventure!
After writing up about fifty or so of these Roy Rogers film reviews I think I may have watched my favorite today. Maybe it was my mood or the way the picture struck me, but I'd rate this as one of the best Rogers flicks I've seen. Unusual in a way too, because most of the supporting cast doesn't include a lot of typical B Western veterans except for LeRoy Mason. I'm not counting Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers in my remarks because they were fairly regular staples in Roy's films.
It starts out kind of unusual too, in that the opening scene has Dale Evans as a New York City night club singer at the Club Casanova, and engaged to a much older looking Rollo Bingham (John Eldredge). I've mentioned it before, but Dale was a very good looker when not constrained to a cowgirl outfit, and her singing voice was exceptionally fine as well. In this film she has about the only off-putting moment I've ever seen her deliver when she throws a hissy-fit over her father's (Thurston Hall) disapproval of her impeding marriage to Bingham. As a result, he decides to head to his ranch in Nevada where his daughter Jenny was born and raised. I'll call Dale's character Jenny here, even though she was introduced in the picture as Joan. That's how the IMDb has her listed in the credits, but I do acknowledge that she was called Jenny later in the story.
Once in Nevada, John Barrabbee gets waylaid on his flight home and winds up meeting Roy and his crew. I find it odd that the story had Thurston Hall get fairly physical in this film, because the sixty two year old actor never looked the athletic type. Even though I'm sure a stunt double was used, I can't imagine why the writers had him lasso a runaway horse aboard Trigger or make a ten day trail ride with Roy. Later on he even gets into a knock down scuffle with Mason's character and I had all I could do but wonder how he held up through it all.
Adding to the fun of this Western are Lloyd Corrigan and Mary Lee doing a traveling sideshow routine in which they appear as different characters from town to town. They're instrumental in the finale when they impersonate buyers for the Bar A-B (Barrabee, get it?) Ranch when a newspaper mistakenly reports the elder Barrabee killed in a plane crash. Keeping the ruse going, John and Roy work together to convince Jenny that she belongs back out West all along.
Typical of Roy's films, there's plenty of singing by all parties concerned here, including Mary Lee with a catchy boogie-woogie number called the "Harum Scarum Baron of Harmonium'. What's really impressive is the final production number that reprises a number of tunes from earlier in the picture, and in another unusual entry, a photo album flashback of Dale Evans singing as a blonde! Don't ask, you'll just have to see it for yourself.
All combined, I'd have to say this one was a whole lot of fun, this coming from a Roy Rogers fan from way back.

Colonel Effingham's Raid (UK title: Man of the Hour) is a 1946 comedy film made by 20th Century Fox, directed by Irving Pichel. It is also known as Berry Fleming's Colonel Effingham's Raid, Everything's Peaches Down in Georgia and Rebel Yell. The screenplay was written by Kathryn Scola, based on a 1943 novel by Berry Fleming. The music score is by Cyril J. Mockridge. The film stars Charles Coburn, Joan Bennett, William Eythe, Allyn Joslyn and Elizabeth Patterson. The plot involves a retired career Army colonel who returns to his hometown, starts writing a column in a local newspaper and takes on the corrupt local politicians to not replace the historic county courthouse.
Fleming based his novel on the Cracker Party and political corruption in Richmond County, Georgia.
Plot:
William Seaborn Effingham (Charles Coburn) returns to his home town Fredericksville, Georgia, in 1940 as a retired Army Colonel. He soon finds something to fill his days with, by starting a fight for the survival of the local newspaper. After many years of absence, he meets his cousin, Albert Marbury (William Eythe), who is a reporter at the newspaper, and hears that a rival newspaper is threatening the existence of the one Albert works for. The competing paper is getting more advertisers because of its support of the sitting mayor, Bill Silk (Thurston Hall). Among other things, the mayor favors renaming the town Confederate Monument Square after a highly questionable deceased politician named Pud Toolen. William isn’t happy at all with this development, and decides to support the editor, Earl Hoats (Allyn Joslyn), in the fight for survival. Effingham has opinions about the content of the paper, and convinces the editor to let him write a military column. The column becomes a success among the readers, and opens up the doors to society in the small town. Effingham eventually writes against renaming the town square in his column, and the editor wants to shut him down. Effingham goes to the mayor with a suggestion to transform the square, rather than renaming it. The mayor agrees, but only to cover up a larger scheme of his to completely change the look of the town square, by tearing down the old beautiful courthouse. When Effingham learns about the plan, he is infuriated, and start fighting for the courthouse’s restoration. The mayor calls for a town meeting, hoping that no one will show up and protest against his plans of transformation of the town square. But Effingham spills the news about the meeting in his column, thereby filling the meeting with town folk opposed to the transformation idea. The mayor still manages to elude the crowd by telling them the town will only get federal money if the courthouse is torn down. Effingham decides to check the correctness of this information, and finds out that the mayor has lied to the people. He talks to the most influential people in town to reverse the decision taken by the mayor, but they refuse to help him. Cousin Albert realizes that William is right about saving the buildings instead of tearing them down, starts a fundraiser in support of the restoration. He succeeds in convincing the mayor to keep the square as it is, and Effingham gets apologies from his old friends as the realize he was right all along.

Every month Thurston County Commissioner Sandra Romero hosts her "Coffee Chat" out in the hinterlands of Yelm and Rainier, Washington. This month, October 2014, the topic was County Auditor Mary Hall speaking about her department at the county. What came up the most were questions about the voting process, and how is it conducted. I thought this was an interesting forum as was the following Yelm forum conducted right after this meeting, The Yelm discussion was a little different, so if this interests you, please check that forum as well.

A lovely video tribute to the really amazing actress and marvelous singer Irene Dunne. If you click on more information, there is a menu to watch directly a particular movie scene that you like. Irene transferred to Hollywood following a successful Broadway career and she was equally at home in screwball comedies, musicals and romantic dramas, always gracious and chatty, zany at times but innately sensible. She was nominated 5 times for the Best Actress Oscar, but inexplicably she never won one.
As with my tribute video to June AlIyson, I played a lot with the association between the lyrics and music of the songs, the movie stories and with the acting and facial expressions of Irene and the other Stars. Enjoy the vision and comment, if you like.
Goodbye and Merry Christmas 2012!

On November 3rd, 2015 we went live from 8-9pm on four cable channels, on the Internet at www.tctv.net, and on KAOS radio 89.3 to deliver the election results of local races in Thurston County. The CEO of TCTV, Deborah Vinsel, hosted the live show with special guests, Stephen Buxbaum, outgoing Olympia Mayor, and Peter Rex, political science teacher at South Puget Sound Community College. We also rolled in a package featuring Mary Hall, the Thurston County Auditor, about how votes are tabulated, and we featured live call-ins with some of the candidates.
