Canadian Pacific in the Canadian Shield: Tunnels, Cuts and Foreign Power

Canadian Pacific's Transcontinental Mainline weaves its way through the rugged terrain and pristine lakes of the Canadian Shield for thousands of kilometers between Toronto and Winnipeg. The city of Kenora, on the spectacular shores of Lake of the Woods and in the heart of cottage country, is on the western edge of the Canadian Shield. This is paradise for any Railfan. The combination of awesome scenery and plenty of traffic is perfect. Many trains were caught from different angles and locations around the Kenora area. Of note was the last train, caught from over top of the Tunnel on "Tunnel Island". It had a UP SD90/43MAC on the point. Train 1: (0:01) CP 8916 and CP 8761 (Both ES44ACs) speed westward over the Jones Rd Grade crossing with a long grain train in tow. This train was captured from the top of a small cut just east of the crossing. Train 2: (2:37) CP 9638 (AC44CW) and CP 6243 (SD60) slowly accelerate on their way east with a long, heavy manifest freight in tow. Train 3: (7:50) CP 8908 (ES44AC) is the lone leader on this long Intermodal/Autorack train bound for points east. CP 9755 (DPU)(AC44CW) is pushing hard at the rear of the train. Train 4: Captured from over top of the only Tunnel on the Keewatin Subdivision, UP 3594 (SD90/43MAC) and CP 9629* (AC44CW) slow for the sharp curves around the shores of Lake of the Woods and the yards near Downtown Kenora. Kenora's Lakefront and Downtown can be seen as the train snakes around the bay. *CP 9629 has part of the last digit faded, and is not legible. This locomotive could also be CP 9628.
