How old are these and who built them?
They are both from the workshop on William Dowd (Boston) and were both made in 1967.
What are the strings made of?
Iron and the deeper strings are brass.
How often do the strings break or need to be replaced?
Since my fingers don't touch the strings (unlike the guitar), the strings can last for a long time (decades). I have only ever broken one string and that comes from turning the wrong tuning peg "Hey, this string isn't getting sharper?...(SNAP TWANG!) opps"
How much did they cost? Quality used harpsichords can be found for about $8,000 for a single manual, to $20,000 for a double.
Where can I find one?
Look online. Just search for harpsichord builder or harpsichord sale. We got ours from a clearing house in Mass.
I've seen a used one for $3,000. Should I buy it?
Be CAREFUL! Some harpsichords were built from kits by amateur woodworkers. Some have major fatal structural flaws. Of course some are good too. If you are going to look at one of those, bring an expert with you. It might not be possible to fix some of these problems and if you are going to need an expert to help you repair a bad harpsichord, you will be spending the same kind of money needed to get a good one.
What is the range of a harpsichord?
Harpsichords vary quite a bit on their number of keys. Some are about 4 octaves. A few (some Italian models for accompanying singers) don't even have all the chromatic bass notes. Those have a "short" octave in the bass. This saves space and cost. You can play the entire Well Tempered Clavier of Bach on a 4 octave instrument.
Mine has quite a wide range (in fact it would be hard to tune any notes above or below the extremes on mine). I wanted this wide range because Scarlatti's Sonata K. 380 requires these high notes (up to G).

A harpsichord is a musical instrument played by means of a keyboard. It produces sound by plucking a string when a key is pressed.
"Harpsichord" designates the whole family of similar plucked keyboard instruments, including the smaller virginals, muselar, and spinet.
The harpsichord was widely used in Renaissance and Baroque music. During the late 18th century it gradually disappeared from the musical scene with the rise of the fortepiano. But in the 20th century it made a resurgence, used in historically informed performance of older music, in new (contemporary) compositions, and in popular culture.
Harpsichords vary in size and shape, but all have the same basic functional arrangement. The player depresses a key pivoted in the middle of its length, which causes the far end of the key to rise. This lifts a jack, a long strip of wood, to which is attached a small plectrum (a wedge-shaped piece of quill or, nowadays plastic), which plucks the string. When the key is released by the player, the far end returns to its rest position and the jack falls back. The plectrum, mounted on a tongue that can swivel backwards away from the string, passes the string without plucking it again. As the key reaches its rest position, the string's vibrations are halted by the damper, a piece of felt attached to the top of the jack.

Sebastian Bach (born April 3, 1968) is a Canadian heavy metal singer who achieved mainstream success as frontman of Skid Row from 1987 to 1996. Since his departure from Skid Row, he has had many television roles, acted in Broadway plays, and led a successful solo career.
Bach was born Sebastian Philip Bierk on April 3, 1968, in Freeport, Bahamas, and raised in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. He attended nearby Lakefield College School in the same class as Michael Kulas, of the British rock group James, a year behind Felipe, Prince of Asturias and a year ahead of the comedian/actor Will Arnett. He is of Norwegian, French Canadian, and Native American descent. Bach's father was the visual artist David Bierk. He is the brother of retired NHL goaltender Zac Bierk, model/actress Heather Dylan Bierk, and Toronto-based artists Jeff, Nick, Alex, and Charles Bierk.
Skid Row initially formed in the late eighties with lead singer Matt Fallon. They began playing at various New Jersey clubs. Fallon would soon leave the band in 1987, leaving Skid Row without a singer. Bach, who had just left his previous band Madam X, was spotted singing at rock photographer Mark Weiss's wedding and the members asked him to join. He turned them down, but changed his mind after hearing the demo tapes of "Youth Gone Wild" and "18 and Life". He sent them a demo of him singing "Saved By Love." They loved it and flew him to New Jersey where they began playing gigs. Sebastian also recorded demos with Bon Jovi & Sabo's friend Jack Ponti. (The song "She's on Top" later came out on Jack Ponti Presents Vol. 1)

The harpsichord concertos, BWV 1052–1065, are concertos for harpsichord, strings and continuo by Johann Sebastian Bach. There are seven complete concertos for a single harpsichord (BWV 1052–1058), three concertos for two harpsichords (BWV 1060–1062), two concertos for three harpsichords (BWV 1063 and 1064), and one concerto for four harpsichords (BWV 1065). Two other concertos include solo harpsichord parts: the concerto BWV 1044, which has solo parts for harpsichord, violin and flute, and Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major, with the same scoring. The concert encompasses arias and instrumental pieces from the oratorio Juditha Triumphans and the operas L'Olimpiade, Tito Manlio, Ottone in Villa, La fida ninfa, Bajazet (Il Tamerlano) and a chilling, passionate performance from Farnace. The ensemble performs Concerto in C major for Flautino (affectionately known as the Penny Whistle), and Concerto in D major for Lute. The predominant portion of music was unknown and specially transcribed from Vivaldi's original manuscripts by musicologist Claudio Osele. The International Film Crew from RM Associates is directed by veteran opera director Brian Large and produced by classical music producer Colin Wilson. The sell-out musical event was presented at the superb art-deco Théatre des Champs-Eysées, Paris in September 2000.

What is the piece/"song" you play at?:
3:11 - 4:12 Bach. Lament from the Capriccio on the Departure of His Favorite Brother. I have a video where I play this.

7:17 - 7:42 Scarlatti Sonata in E Major. K. 380
10:06 - Bach. Prelude in C major from the Well Tempered Clavier. BWV 846
How old are these and who built them?
They are both from the workshop on William Dowd (Boston) and were both made in 1967.
What are the strings made of?
Iron and the deeper strings are brass.
How often do the strings break or need to be replaced?
Since my fingers don't touch the strings (unlike the guitar), the strings can last for a long time (decades). I have only ever broken one string and that comes from turning the wrong tuning peg "Hey, this string isn't getting sharper?...(SNAP TWANG!) opps"
How much did they cost? Quality used harpsichords can be found for about $8,000 for a single manual, to $20,000 for a double.
Where can I find one?
Look online. Just search for harpsichord builder or harpsichord sale. We got ours from a clearing house in Mass.
I've seen a used one for $3,000. Should I buy it?
Be CAREFUL! Some harpsichords were built from kits by amateur woodworkers. Some have major fatal structural flaws. Of course some are good too. If you are going to look at one of those, bring an expert with you. It might not be possible to fix some of these problems and if you are going to need an expert to help you repair a bad harpsichord, you will be spending the same kind of money needed to get a good one.

The harpsichord concertos, BWV 1052–1065, are concertos for harpsichord, strings and continuo by Johann Sebastian Bach. There are seven complete concertos for a single harpsichord (BWV 1052–1058), three concertos for two harpsichords (BWV 1060–1062), two concertos for three harpsichords (BWV 1063 and 1064), and one concerto for four harpsichords (BWV 1065). Two other concertos include solo harpsichord parts: the concerto BWV 1044, which has solo parts for harpsichord, violin and flute, and Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major, with the same scoring. In addition there is a nine-bar concerto fragment for harpsichord (BWV 1059) which adds an oboe to the strings and continuo.
All of Bach's harpsichord concertos (with the exception of the Brandenburg concerto) are thought to be arrangements made from earlier concertos for melodic instruments probably written in Köthen. In many cases, only the harpsichord version has survived.
