The mangrove forest is a place of amazement both above and below the waterline. Mangroves have the unique ability to live in salt water, and they use their highly specialized roots to filter salt, inhale oxygen, and extract nutrients from an environment that other trees can not tolerate. The world within the tangled mess of mangrove roots is dark, silty, eerie, and wonderful.
In Hawaii, the topic of mangrove ecology is quite controversial. Many people would like to see mangroves removed here as they are not a native species. Mangroves are among the oldest and most productive wetland forests on our planet. Found in the intertidal zone, they are uniquely adapted to survive highly saline and anoxic conditions. They are ideal habitats for many terrestrial and marine species, carbon sinks and natural barriers against storm surges and coastal erosion. Mangroves provide invaluable services but have been declining worldwide as a result of anthropogenic and other threats.
Guardians of our Coast showcases the fascinating web of life that surrounds these tidal forests. The movie highlights the unique collaboration between governments, regional and local institutions, NGOs and local communities, in efforts to save these vulnerable ecosystems and restore them to their former glory.

India has been a part of the Mangrove for the Future (MFF) regional initiative since 2006. Our programme is guided by the National Strategy and Action Plan with primary focus on research, livelihood security, learnings for policy interventions and knowledge dissemination.

In addition to continuing our work at a national level, MFF India will play a vital role in future studies/initiatives that develop our capacity to manage coastal ecosystems from a regional approach.

Great day out on the water, we caught around 15 Mangrove Snapper and 9 were keepers. Thats only 1 away from our bag limit. We caught a couple small Gag Grouper, a grunt, and a Black Sea Bass. More fishing videos coming soon! ( Same music as last couple videos but I like the music a lot ). Thanks for Watching

Les mangroves de la Guyane ont une histoire passionnante. Leur cycle de vie est ici lié à de gigantesques bancs de vase. Ils proviennent d'un fleuve très actif qui se trouve à plusieurs centaines de kilomètres de là : l'Amazone, le plus grand bassin fluvial du monde. Il faut ensuite une végétation extravagante, capable de fixer ses graines dans une vase mouvante, de puiser sa nourriture au milieu de l'eau salée et de pousser en un claquement de doigts. Là, ce sont les palétuviers qui entrent en scène ! Fred, Jamy et Sabine sont partis explorer les mangroves qui s'étendent sur des dizaines de kilomètres le long des côtes guyanaises. Ils nous expliquent comment sont apparues ces étranges forêts. Ils s'enfoncent ensuite dans la réserve naturelle du marais de Kaw pour en découvrir la faune singulière. The animation illustrates the growing importance of mangroves to the health of the planet; storing in some cases 5x more carbon than inland rainforests, being an integral link between land and ocean, adapting to sea level rise, protecting and producing for coastal communities, and helping to mitigate climate change. These unique and critical ecosystems need protecting and restoring.
The Mangrove Action Project (MAP) is dedicated to reversing the degradation and loss of mangrove forests. These unique coastal ecosystems linking land and sea, play a vital role in helping to keep our planet healthy. Mangroves once sheltered three-quarters of tropical and subtropical shorelines. Today, only half remain.
Witnessing firsthand the rapid devastation of the world’s mangroves, the founders of MAP decided in 1992 that it was time to form a global network to address the loss of these coastal forests worldwide. By demonstrating the importance of mangrove forests through our programs, we are striving for a protected and restored coastline managed sustainably by local communities.
Our approach involves networking, education, advocacy, conservation and restoration, as well as sustainable community-based development tackling present day crises such as climate change and sea level rise.

On Day 4 in Langkawi we started the day by heading to the Kilim Geo Park Mangrove, which is a park in Langkawi dedicated to preserving the mangroves. The best way to get around is to rent a boat, so we had a boat that took us around to a variety of different stops. After getting in the boat our first stop was the bat cave, which was filled with bats. After checking out the bats we continued back into the boat and stopped at a place called Gua Langsir, which was kind of like a crater that fills with water depending on the tide of the ocean.
After visiting a variety of different sites we continued on the mangrove tour by just cruising on the boat. It was nice to just sit and relax and enjoy the cool breeze as we glided through the water. Mangrove trees are very important in Langkawi and they are protected on the island. After riding the boat around for a while we continued on to a section where there are a number of different floating restaurants. We stopped at Hold in The Wall Restaurant to first go to the fish farm. They had quite a nice selection of huge fish, and they fed them. It was very interesting to see, especially the stingray. The stingray felt like an elephant, but slimy.
We had lunch at Hole in The Wall Floating restaurant on the Langkawi mangrove tour, but the food was not good. It was salty and sweet, but overpriced and I think the flavors were very toned down - quite touristy.
After the Langkawi mangrove tour we had a little extra time, and so with the help of our guide and driver, we stopped at a local Malaysian wedding taking place at someones house right along the road. I’m going to edit a full video about this experience, because it was incredible, but in the Langkawi video I just included a quick teaser.
Finally, for dinner we went to The Andaman hotel and ate at The Japanese Restaurant. Overall the Japanese food was pretty good.

The remaining mangrove forest areas of the world in 2000 was 53,190 square miles (137,760 km²) spanning 118 countries and territories. The word is used in at least three senses: (1) most broadly to refer to the habitat and entire plant assemblage or mangal,[page needed] for which the terms mangrove forest biome, mangrove swamp and mangrove forest are also used, (2) to refer to all trees and large shrubs in the mangrove swamp, and (3) narrowly to refer to the mangrove family of plants, the Rhizophoraceae, or even more specifically just to mangrove trees of the genus Rhizophora. The term "mangrove" comes to English from Spanish (perhaps by way of Portuguese), and is of Caribbean origin, likely Taíno. It was earlier "mangrow" (from Portugues mangue or Spanish mangle), but this was corrupted via folk etymology influence of "grove".

The best way to get around is to rent a boat, so we had a boat that took us around to a variety of different stops. After getting in the boat our first stop was the bat cave, which was filled with bats. After checking out the bats we continued back into the boat and stopped at a place called Gua Langsir, which was kind of like a crater that fills with water depending on the tide of the ocean. Mangroves are among the oldest and most productive wetland forests on our planet. Found in the intertidal zone, they are uniquely adapted to survive highly saline and anoxic conditions. They are ideal habitats for many terrestrial and marine species, carbon sinks and natural barriers against storm surges and coastal erosion. Mangroves provide invaluable services but have been declining worldwide as a result of anthropogenic and other threats.
Guardians of our Coast showcases the fascinating web of life that surrounds these tidal forests. The movie highlights the unique collaboration between governments, regional and local institutions, NGOs and local communities, in efforts to save these vulnerable ecosystems and restore them to their former glory.

India has been a part of the Mangrove for the Future (MFF) regional initiative since 2006. Our programme is guided by the National Strategy and Action Plan with primary focus on research, livelihood security, learnings for policy interventions and knowledge dissemination.
MFF India actively works with the private sector in environmentally sustainable business practices and coastal area development. In addition to continuing our work at a national level, MFF India will play a vital role in future studies/initiatives that develop our capacity to manage coastal ecosystems from a regional approach.

Ils proviennent d'un fleuve très actif qui se trouve à plusieurs centaines de kilomètres de là : l'Amazone, le plus grand bassin fluvial du monde. Il faut ensuite une végétation extravagante, capable de fixer ses graines dans une vase mouvante, de puiser sa nourriture au milieu de l'eau salée et de pousser en un claquement de doigts. Là, ce sont les palétuviers qui entrent en scène ! Fred, Jamy et Sabine sont partis explorer les mangroves qui s'étendent sur des dizaines de kilomètres le long des côtes guyanaises. These unique and critical ecosystems need protecting and restoring.
The Mangrove Action Project (MAP) is dedicated to reversing the degradation and loss of mangrove forests. These unique coastal ecosystems linking land and sea, play a vital role in helping to keep our planet healthy. Mangroves once sheltered three-quarters of tropical and subtropical shorelines. Today, only half remain.
Witnessing firsthand the rapid devastation of the world’s mangroves, the founders of MAP decided in 1992 that it was time to form a global network to address the loss of these coastal forests worldwide. By demonstrating the importance of mangrove forests through our programs, we are striving for a protected and restored coastline managed sustainably by local communities.

On Day 4 in Langkawi we started the day by heading to the Kilim Geo Park Mangrove, which is a park in Langkawi dedicated to preserving the mangroves. The best way to get around is to rent a boat, so we had a boat that took us around to a variety of different stops. After getting in the boat our first stop was the bat cave, which was filled with bats. After checking out the bats we continued back into the boat and stopped at a place called Gua Langsir, which was kind of like a crater that fills with water depending on the tide of the ocean.
After visiting a variety of different sites we continued on the mangrove tour by just cruising on the boat. It was nice to just sit and relax and enjoy the cool breeze as we glided through the water. Mangrove trees are very important in Langkawi and they are protected on the island. After riding the boat around for a while we continued on to a section where there are a number of different floating restaurants. We stopped at Hold in The Wall Restaurant to first go to the fish farm. They had quite a nice selection of huge fish, and they fed them. It was very interesting to see, especially the stingray. The stingray felt like an elephant, but slimy.
We had lunch at Hole in The Wall Floating restaurant on the Langkawi mangrove tour, but the food was not good. It was salty and sweet, but overpriced and I think the flavors were very toned down - quite touristy.
After the Langkawi mangrove tour we had a little extra time, and so with the help of our guide and driver, we stopped at a local Malaysian wedding taking place at someones house right along the road. I’m going to edit a full video about this experience, because it was incredible, but in the Langkawi video I just included a quick teaser.
Finally, for dinner we went to The Andaman hotel and ate at The Japanese Restaurant. Overall the Japanese food was pretty good.
