An earthquake has toppled buildings in the south Taiwanese city of Tainan, killing at least five people. Rescue teams have been trying to reach people trapped in rubble since the magnitude 6.4 quake struck just before 04:00 (20:00 GMT Friday). A baby was among the dead when a high-rise residential block collapsed. At least 155 people were injured. President Ma Ying-jeou promised an "all-out effort" to rescue people when he arrived in the city.

Une brève tornade a provoqué des dégâts matériels importants ce dimanche à Tainan City, Taiwan, sur des habitations, installations électriques et des arbres ont été arrachés. L'île se remettait tout juste du puissant typhon Soudelor, qui a déjà occasionné des dégâts conséquents et des inondations.
La tornade, filmée par une caméra embarquée à bord d'un véhicule, a emporté une voiture et secoué quelques riverains. Fort heureusement, on ne compte que quelques blessés légers.

Tainan is a city in southern Taiwan. It is the fifth largest city of Taiwan, one of special municipalities directly under the Executive Yuan by central government of the ROC. Tainan faces the Taiwan Strait in the west and south. Tainan's complex history of comebacks, redefinitions and renewals inspired its popular nickname "the Phoenix City."
Tainan was initially established by the Dutch East India Company as a ruling and trading base which called Fort Zeelandia during the period of Dutch rule on Taiwan. After Dutch colonists were defeated by Koxinga in 1661, Tainan was remained as the capital of the Tungning Kingdom until 1683 and afterwards the capital of Taiwan prefecture under the rule of Qing Dynasty until 1887, when the Qing Dynasty established Taipei as the new provincial capital. Tainan has been historically regarded as one of the oldest cities in Taiwan, and its former name, Tayouan (大員), has been claimed to be the source of the name Taiwan. It is also one of Taiwan's cultural capitals, for its rich folk cultures including the famous local snack food, extensively preserved Taoist rites and other living local traditions covering child birth to funeral. The city houses the first Confucian school–temple, built in 1665, the remains of the Eastern and Southern gates of the old city, and countless other historical monuments. Tainan claims more Buddhist and Taoist temples than any other city in Taiwan.

Dengue fever cases continue to rise, with the Centers for Disease Control’s latest data confirming some 18,365 total cases in Taiwan. Tainan alone accounts for 86 percent of the cases, leading the Tainan City government to recruit 250 temporary staff to clean potential mosquito breeding areas. A similar recruitment campaign was also carried out in mid-September. Clutching a registration form and personal information, applicants gather at Tainan City Hall to obtain temporary employment as sanitation workers in the battle against dengue fever.“I feel good about the chance to help my city.”There were 180 people recruited in mid-September, and another 250 people are now expected to be recruited for similar duties. This job is only expected to last for two months and comes with a monthly salary of just NT$20,008. The salary and the job description were enough to entice a 76-year-old senior to apply.“I am 76 years old. I didn’t know about the previous recruitment, but this time I saw the advertisement in the newspaper.”The dengue fever outbreak continues to rage in Tainan. On Tuesday some 297 new cases were reported in a single day, bringing the total in the city to 15,793. Municipal authorities will now rely on temporary workers to fight this outbreak.

The scooter driving test in Taiwan consists of a written test of multiple choice and true or false questions on driving rules, road signs, and general knowledge. I failed the written test the first time because I didn't brush up on my road signs before I took the test. Google "Taiwan Scooter Driving Test" and you should find a link to tealit.com. That has all the good stuff you need to brush up on your knowledge. For the driving part... I have been (illegally) driving a 100cc in Taiwan for about 8 months. I took the test on a 125cc because I hope to buy one later and the license is different between sizes. No difference in written tests, just the driving portion. A 6.7-magnitude earthquake has toppled a 17-storey building in Tainan city in the south of Taiwan, with rescue teams trying to reach people trapped inside the rubble. Seven people are confirmed dead in the quake, which struck Kaohsiung early on Saturday. Une brève tornade a provoqué des dégâts matériels importants ce dimanche à Tainan City, Taiwan, sur des habitations, installations électriques et des arbres ont été arrachés. L'île se remettait tout juste du puissant typhon Soudelor, qui a déjà occasionné des dégâts conséquents et des inondations.
La tornade, filmée par une caméra embarquée à bord d'un véhicule, a emporté une voiture et secoué quelques riverains. Fort heureusement, on ne compte que quelques blessés légers.

Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan and was the capital during imperial times. It is famous for its temples, historic buildings and snack food. The city is currently the fifth largest city on the island after New Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung and Taipei with a population of over 1.8 million. For a city of its size by population, Tainan's size by land area is exceptional. Very few buildings are more than 5 to 6 stories in height and most are between two and three stories. Like other Taiwanese cities, most people in Tainan, including taxi drivers, cannot speak English well (except for high school and college students), though some of the older generation can converse in Japanese. However, to help visitors get around, there are free tri-lingual (Chinese, English and Japanese) map-guides available at the railway station.
One of the most popular destinations in the Tainan area is the Anping District (安平區； Ānpíng qū). The Anping District is the historical heart of Tainan, the original capital of Taiwan. The scooter driving test in Taiwan consists of a written test of multiple choice and true or false questions on driving rules, road signs, and general knowledge. I failed the written test the first time because I didn't brush up on my road signs before I took the test. Google "Taiwan Scooter Driving Test" and you should find a link to tealit.com. That has all the good stuff you need to brush up on your knowledge.
For the driving part... I have been (illegally) driving a 100cc in Taiwan for about 8 months. I took the test on a 125cc because I hope to buy one later and the license is different between sizes. No difference in written tests, just the driving portion.
As for the illegal part of driving a scooter in Taiwan, here's your choice. Pay $250 (Taiwan) for a license, or get fined $17,000 (Taiwan) for getting caught without one.

This south east Asian island is separated from the Chinese mainland by the Formosa Strait that at its narrowest point is a hundred and thirty kilometres wide. Taipei is a pulsating metropolis in the north of the island in which emperors’ treasures and chaotic traffic highlight both industrial strength and a Chinese way of life. In the old town district of Wan Hua is the city’s oldest and most precious Buddhist temple of Lungshan Szu, the Dragon Mountain Temple. The Sun Yi Sen Memorial Hall was built to commemorate the centenary of the founder of the Republic of China. His efforts brought about the abdication of the last emperor and the birth of the Republic Of China. The Confucius Temple is a place of contemplation and is a replica of the Temple Of Qu Fu, Qu Fu having been the home town of Confucius. This silent place is one of five temples in Taiwan dedicated to the great Chinese philosopher, Confucius, the founder of a religion that even today has many followers. The past importance of the former Taiwanese capital of Tainan is indicated by the city’s many temple complexes that contain an abundance of sacred works of art. Religion still plays a central role in the daily life of the people and the Tien Gon Temple is the most important temple in Taiwan. Taiwan is an island full of magical charm, fascinating works of art and breathtaking natural wonders. The legacy of Confucius mixed with the bright hope of the future. When you’ve gotten your fill of literary splendor, head to the Memorial Museum of Cosmonauts, where you can learn about the Soviet Union’s efforts to reach the stars and the epic space race that lasted from 1955 to 1972.
Moscow is a city of creativity and innovation, but is also very much aware of its own history; as such, a haunting part of any Moscow sightseeing is a visit to the Fallen Monument Park. After the fall of the Soviet Union, countless statues and monuments were removed from their pedestals and moved to this park. Over the years, more modern artwork and sculptures have been added, turning the park into a strange, yet peaceful graveyard of former icons.

Should you tire of Fuerteventura’s beaches, head inland to explore the island’s amazing volcanic landscapes and villages. Take the winding roads up to Mirador Morro Velosa on Mount Tegu for the best views on the entire island, then visit Puerto del Rosario, the island’s capital.

During your Kyoto tour, take a rickshaw ride to the Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka districts, where cars are prohibited and traditional teahouses and temples adorn the nearby landscape. Kyoto is known as “The City of Ten Thousand Shrines” for good reason. Walk through the great open plazas of the Haian Shrine, or spend a quiet moment in the intimate confines of the Shorenin Temple and its beautiful gardens.
The most famous of Kyoto’s temples is Fushimi Inari-taisha, a stunning red complex that sprawls over Mount Inari, which is named after and dedicated to Inari, the fox spirit. A hike to the summit takes about two hours, and will lead you through thousands of colorful sub-shrines and thick, ancient forest. Once you’re at the top, you’ll have a stunning view of Kyoto.
