PSBT
The Public Service Broadcasting Trust,
India, commissions, produces and mentors 60+ independent documentary films a year. Our library of 600 docus have been screened at more than 750 film festivals worldwide, winning close to
200 awards
. 50 percent of docs are made by women and two thirds starting out filmmakers.
We are a not-for-profit based in
New Delhi that works to create and sustain a credible space for public service broadcasting in India, nurturing a media that is independent, participatory, pluralistic and democratic.
PSBT empowers independent
Indian filmmakers to make movies that explore both personal narratives and social issues. The films are screened on national public television in India and used as educational tools to cultivate public awareness on issues ranging from the challenges of diversity and development, democracy and gender to the right to education and food; from interpreting the relevance of Indian’s rich civilisational heritage, its history, religion and traditions to exploring contemporary culture. PSBT has been supporting video journalism of passion and integrity through its documentaries for 15 years.
We are primarily funded by
Prasar Bharati, India’s national public broadcaster via its television wing Doordarshan (DD), the
Films Division, External Publicity and
Public Diplomacy Division of the
Ministry of External Affairs,
UNESCO and the
Ford Foundation, amongst others.
PSBT hosts the annual
Open Frame Film Festival to celebrate its commitment to freedom of expression, screening works from around the world that embody the highest standards of
Indie filmmaking.
PSBT is managed by a core team led by the Managing Trustee, Rajiv Mehrotra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajiv_Mehrotra ) supported by
Executive Producers Tulika Srivastava & Ridhima Mehra and a small team of three others. It is overseen by a distinguished
Board of Trustees who include

Mrinal Sen,
Shyam Benegal,
Sharmila Tagore,
Sunita Narain, and
