In this tutorial, I demonstrate how to make a Peony flower using gumpaste / sugar paste.

I have used Satin Ice gumpaste for this and fondant which I had previously coloured electric pink and teal, using Americolour gel food colours.
I have used a 22 gage wire in the making of these peony's and have dipped the bud in gold mica powder (unfortunately I didn't realize my SD card was full and had stopped recording at that point gosh darn it!) but it was as simple as a lazy dip in the container and boom, a gorgeous centre piece. Note: do not dip your bud all the way into your gold powder or your petals won't stick to the base of your bud as the powder acts as a "non stick" surface after that.
My next video tutorial will feature these pretties, so stay tuned for that video tutorial coming out sometime this week! ...3rd May, 2015...

I love peonies, they are beautiful flowers. While time consuming to create, they make for a beautiful bold statement flower on wedding or special occasion cakes! They are a large flower so you don't need too many to cover a lot of space!

This video shows how I was painting a peony flower with watercolor paints. It may seems to be difficult but it's easier than you think. You can really try to paint it on your own. Almost every petal of peony I'm painting the same way. You only need to be patient:
1 - very light wash of base color
2 - darker tone on one side of that base color
3 - mix together that darker tone with first light wash to make a graded wash
4 - when everything is dry add the veins to the petals.
This way is more careful, but not very accurate as in botanical painting, and not very loose as in very watery watercolors. You paint petal by petal. It can be done in more loosely, more watery way, which maybe I'll show you in another video.

Peony or paeony is a name for plants in the genus Paeonia, the only genus in the flowering plant family Paeoniaceae. They are native to Asia,Southern Europe and Western North America. Boundaries between species are not clear and estimates of the number of species range from 25 to 40.
Most are herbaceous perennial plants 1.5 - 5 feet (0.5 - 1.5 metres) tall, but some resemble trees up to 5 - 10 feet (1.5 – 3 metres) tall. They have compound, deeply lobed leaves, and large, often fragrant flowers, ranging from red to white or yellow, in late spring and early summer.
The peony is named after Paeon (also spelled Paean), a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. Asclepius became jealous of his pupil; Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower.
The family name "Paeoniaceae" was first used by Friedrich K.L. Rudolphi in 1830, following a suggestion by Friedrich Gottlieb Bartling that same year. The family had been given other names a few years earlier. The composition of the family has varied, but it has always consisted of Paeonia and one or more genera that are now placed in Ranunculales. It has been widely believed that Paeonia is closest to Glaucidium, and this idea has been followed in some recent works.Molecular phylogenetic studies, however, have demonstrated conclusively that Glaucidium belongs in Ranunculaceae, but that Paeonia belongs in the unrelated order Saxifragales.

This video shows how I was painting a peony flower with watercolor paints. It may seems to be difficult but it's easier than you think. You can really try to paint it on your own. Almost every petal of peony I'm painting the same way. You only need to be patient: 1 - very light wash of base color 2 - darker tone on one side of that base color 3 - mix together that darker tone with first light wash to make a graded wash 4 - when everything is dry add the veins to the petals. This way is more careful, but not very accurate as in botanical painting, and not very loose as in very watery watercolors. You paint petal by petal. It can be done in more loosely, more watery way, which maybe I'll show you in another video. I have used Satin Ice gumpaste for this and fondant which I had previously coloured electric pink and teal, using Americolour gel food colours.
I have used a 22 gage wire in the making of these peony's and have dipped the bud in gold mica powder (unfortunately I didn't realize my SD card was full and had stopped recording at that point gosh darn it!) but it was as simple as a lazy dip in the container and boom, a gorgeous centre piece. Note: do not dip your bud all the way into your gold powder or your petals won't stick to the base of your bud as the powder acts as a "non stick" surface after that.
My next video tutorial will feature these pretties, so stay tuned for that video tutorial coming out sometime this week! ...3rd May, 2015...

This video shows how I was painting a peony flower with watercolor paints. It may seems to be difficult but it's easier than you think. You can really try to paint it on your own. Almost every petal of peony I'm painting the same way. You only need to be patient:
1 - very light wash of base color
2 - darker tone on one side of that base color
3 - mix together that darker tone with first light wash to make a graded wash
4 - when everything is dry add the veins to the petals.
This way is more careful, but not very accurate as in botanical painting, and not very loose as in very watery watercolors. You paint petal by petal. It can be done in more loosely, more watery way, which maybe I'll show you in another video.

This video shows how I was painting a peony flower with watercolor paints. It may seems to be difficult but it's easier than you think. You can really try to paint it on your own. Almost every petal of peony I'm painting the same way. You only need to be patient:
1 - very light wash of base color

I have a lot of beloved flower favorites, but at the top of that list is the peony. There are so many varieties in colors and form that I could design another dozen version of peonies in paper quite easily. These are both very pretty and fun for different uses such as weddings, baby showers or everyday decor. Working with floral crepe is fun and quite simple.
