Timothy Garton Ash CMG FRSA (born 12 July 1955) is a British historian, author and commentator. He is Professor of European Studies at Oxford University. Much of his work has been concerned with the late modern and contemporary history of Central and Eastern Europe. He has written about the Communist regimes of that region, their experience with the secret police, the Revolutions of 1989 and the transformation of the former Eastern Bloc states into member states of the European Union. He has examined the role of Europe and the challenge of combining freedom and diversity, especially in relation to free speech.
Garton Ash was educated at St Edmund's School, Hindhead before going on to Sherborne School, a well-known public school in Dorset in South West England, followed by Exeter College, Oxford where he studied Modern History. For post-graduate study, he went to St Antony's College, Oxford, and then, in the still divided Berlin, the Free University in West Berlin and the Humboldt University in East Berlin. During his studies in East Berlin, he was under surveillance from the Stasi, which served as the basis for his 1997 book The File.
Sir Ahmad Salman Rushdie, (Kt.) FRSL (/sælˈmɑːn ˈrʊʃdi/;Kashmiri: अहमद सलमान रुशदी (Devanagari), احمد سلمان رشدی (Nastaʿlīq); born 19 June 1947) is a British Indian novelist and essayist. His second novel, Midnight's Children (1981), won the Booker Prize in 1981. Much of his fiction is set on the Indian subcontinent. He is said to combine magical realism with historical fiction; his work is concerned with the many connections, disruptions, and migrations between Eastern and Western civilizations.
His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses (1988), was the centre of a major controversy, provoking protests from Muslims in several countries. Death threats were made against him, including a fatwā calling for his assassination issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Supreme Leader of Iran, on 14 February 1989, and as a result he was put under police protection by the British government.
Rushdie was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, Britain's senior literary organisation, in 1983. He was appointed Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France in January 1999. In June 2007, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him for his services to literature. In 2008, The Times ranked him thirteenth on its list of the fifty greatest British writers since 1945.
Professor Timothy Garton Ash discusses the difficulty of memory laws and free speech: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/free-speech-and-the-study-of-history A growing number of countries have so-called memory laws, ranging from the criminalisation of Holocaust denial, to prescriptions for the teaching of certain subjects, memorial days and public monuments. Which, if any, of these are justified? Which are more effective in combating evils they are supposed to combat, based on misinterpretations of the past? The lecturer, who has just completed a book on free speech, will argue that phenomena such as Holocaust denial are better contested by the completely free, robust exchange of scholarly, journalistic and political debate, and that the state should not use its coercive power to...

Hromadske spoke to Timothy Garton Ash, a renowned British historian, author, and professor of European Studies at Oxford University, while he was briefly visiting Ukraine. He talked about the conflict in the East, ways to make sure Europe understands the importance of the situation, Putin’s plans on Ukraine, and how to counter Russian narrative about Ukraine. “What Putin wants is not a frozen conflict”, said Ash, “but a simmering conflict, a conflict that is still on the boil”. Ukraine needs to ensure Kremlin recognizes what’s going to happen in case they escalate even more. Garton Ash also commented on the talks about the unobvious results of reforming, the year after Maidan, naming Russia the biggest obstacle on the way of changes, “If the obstacles were only internal to Ukraine, if it...

Beides...
http://www.intelligencesquared.com/ This speech was taken from our May 2011 debate, 'Germany no longer needs Europe: the dream is over', which took place at the Royal Geographical Society. Timothy Garton Ash is Professor of European Studies at Oxford University, a regular contributor to the Guardian and author of Facts are Subversive. He specialises in 'history of the present'. He argued against the motion. Event info: "Even before it began, Europe's moment as a major world power in the 21st century looks to be over." So says Richard Haass, President of New York's influential Council on Foreign Relations. And you can see where he's coming from. The "no" votes on the EU constitution in 2005, the subsequent rise of nationalist and centre-right governments across Europe, the grudg...
