Capital punishment, death penalty or execution is government sanctioned punishment by death. The sentence is referred to as a death sentence. Crimes that can result in a death penalty are known as capital crimes or capital offences, such as first degree murder, terrorism, and espionage. The term capital originates from the Latin capitalis, literally "regarding the head" (referring to execution by beheading). There are many execution methods; one widely practiced form historically that is the most common modern method used in jurisdictions with capital punishment is hanging.
Capital punishment has, in the past, been practiced by most societies, as a punishment for criminals, and political or religious dissidents. Historically, the carrying out of the death sentence was often accompanied by torture, and executions were most often public.
Thirty-six countries actively practice capital punishment, 103 countries have completely abolished it de jure for all crimes, 6 have abolished it for ordinary crimes only (while maintaining it for special circumstances such as war crimes), and 50 have abolished it de facto (have not used it for at least ten years and/or are under moratorium). No Western country still uses the death penalty except the United States.

This is a short, 10 minute documentary outlining the events that occur on execution day for those sentenced with the death penalty. It was filmed in Raleigh, North Carolina by Scott Langley. With the death penalty now being sought in the Casey Anthony case we thought you might find this interesting. A doctor at the state prison walks viewers through the routine of preparing for and carrying out an execution from begining to end. We don't feel this documentary is particularly disturbing visually; however, if you find the subject matter uncomfortable it is recommended you don't watch this video.
Over 14,000 people have been executed in the U.S. since 1800.

We, as a society, seem to have an obsession with death and how we will end our lives. From illness, to suicide, to unexpected death, our last moments have more of a weighted meaning than the moments from the prime of our lives. This is likely why our society has such an obsession with the last words spoken before death. The death penalty has been a focal point of controversy for the last several decades, but it’s been a practice that’s been in existence for hundreds of years as being put to death w...

A Florida man was convicted of murder in May, and during a recent court appearance, he actually dared the judge to give him the death penalty. The jury had found James Herard guilty of murdering two people at a Dunkin Donuts in 2008 and recommended the death penalty in his case. Herard got to speak in court this past Friday, and said to the judge, “Go ahead and do what you gonna do. I pretty much dare you to give me the death sentence because I’m innocent.” And here’s how confident he is: “I’m actually hoping you give me the death penalty because I know the Supreme Court won’t allow me to die for something I didn’t commit.” This actually isn’t the first odd performance of Herard’s in court. When he appeared in court to face accusations over the Dunkin Donuts robbery in 2008, Herard lite...
China executes more people than the rest of the world combined and former railways minister Liu Zhijun is the next to get killed for massive corruption. Except his death sentence has been given a two year reprieve. Which almost always means 10-15 years in prison. Of course since as I have said, China executes a lot of people, most aren't so lucky. That's where prisoners of conscience and the illegal organ trade come into the picture. According to BuzzFeed News, attorneys for Dylann Roof have expanded their argument opposing the death penalty, arguing it violates the religious freedoms of prospective jurors. Roof is accused of killing nine black members of a historic South Carolina church. The massacre deeply shocked the nation--so much so that President Barack Obama spoke at a memorial service for the victims. The court filing was an answer to the government’s argument against Roof’s motion to strike the death penalty as a possible punishment in the federal case, which is set to start jury selection this month. In the jury selection process, it is standard practice to ask a prospective juror whether he or she believes in the death penalty. Roof’s attorneys are also arguing that the death penalty itself is unconstitutio...

The emotionally powerful Discovery Channel documentary about what happens, minute by minute, the 24 hours before the condemned of Death Row leave the world.
Though the death penalty's popularity has been in decline since the 1980s, a recent Gallup poll found that Americans are still largely supportive, with 1 in 6 in favor as punishment for murder. Legal in 32 states, it has come under renewed scrutiny in light of several botched executions in 2014. At the heart of the debate are many complicated questions. Within a flawed criminal justice system, is it possible to know every person's guilt with a sufficient degree of certainty? Does the fear of death reduce crime? Are there race and class biases in sentencing? Are some crimes so heinous in nature that punishment by death is the only appropriate measure, or is capital punishment always immoral? Should we abolish the death penalty?
Nicky Campbell presents The Big Questions live from Ashton Park School in Bristol. The 'Big Question' is "Do some crimes deserve the death penalty?" Guests include Dr. Michael Naughton of The Innocence Network UK, Mail on Sunday columnist Peter Hitchens, Christian barrister Mark Mullins, Vi and Ray Donovan from the Chris Donovan Trust, broadcaster James O'Brien, Michael O'Brien (who spent time in prison after he was wrongly convicted of murder), columnist Bruce Anderson, and the moronic David Musa Pidcock from the Islamic Party of Britain, who makes the astonishing claim that the 9/11 and 7/7 terrorists were innocent!!! (BBC The Big Questions, 29th April 2012)
As of October 1, 2014 there were 57 women on death row. This constitutes 1.88% of the total death row population of 3,035 persons. In the past 100 years, over 40 women have been executed in the U.S, including 15 since 1976. See, Women Executed in the U.S. Since 1900 for the date, state, race, and method of each execution. In general, both the death sentencing rate and the death row population remain very small for women in comparison to that for men. Actual execution of female offenders is quite rare, with only 571 documented instances as of 12/31/2012, beginning with the first in 1632. These executions constitute about 2.9% of the total of confirmed executions in the United States since 1608.
There are only 28 countries left in the world who use the death penalty. The United States is one of them. In his talk, Nick discusses how the system is broken and what should be done to change it. Nick McKeown is a Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, where he teaches how the Internet works, and researches how to improve it. Nick grew up in England, and back in college he ran the UK student chapter of Amnesty International, which opened his eyes to the practice of executing people in the USA. We are unique among developed nations for executing so many of our own people, putting us in the company of Iran, Saudi Arabia, China and Syria. Since 1999, Nick has sought to end the death penalty. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conf...

I was painfully aware, I was painfully unprepared
So I did my best to make every thing right
And I spent some time alone on the surface of the sun
And I burned away to what I once was
All that time I have wasted
All that time I was wasted
It doesn't matter now 'cause I have seen the future
It's amazing, we will fall to our knees
Faster cars and stronger cures
You won't get wet when it's raining and no death penalty
In November of last year, I thought I could use a change
So I quit my job and got myself a home
But it turns out I was wrong, just another wasted year
And the knowledge that a duplex doesn't save
All that time I have wasted
All that time I was wasted
It doesn't matter now 'cause I have seen the future
It's amazing, we will fall to our knees
Faster cars and stronger cures
