Avignon Papacy
In this video, we take a look at the Avignon Papacy (1305-1377) and the context of the 100 Years War. For over 70 years the papacy moved from Rome to the city of Avignon, and the story about this move tells us a great deal about the 14th century and the Catholic Church in that day.

http://tourvideos.com/ Avignon in Provence in the south of France, was home to nine popes during the 14th century and is one of the most beautiful cities in France today, Avignon is a treasure house of palaces, museums and meandering lanes, surrounded by an old fortified wall that still protects it from modernization.
That is one of the beauties of a walled town in Europe: Not only did it protect the town from bandits and invaders during the Middle Ages, but in the 20th and 21st centuries the wall is protecting these historic centers from modernization. This is what the visitors want to see, and it brings in revenue for the city. Within the wall of Avignon you have a nicely preserved old town, and yet the same time, very modern shops that are way up to date and populated by hip people.
This city in the heart of beautiful Provence lays claim to dozens of historic monuments, especially the great Palace of the Popes which was gradually enlarged into an imposing fortification during the 60-year papal residency and is now a museum open to the public.
This movie combines several shorter earlier movie to provide a complete picture of this wondrful city.
The pedestrian shopping district extends ten square blocks south, but save it for tomorrow so you can devote more of this first day to the historic sites and west side of town.
Energetic types might opt for a 10-block circular stroll through some of these quiet back alleys towards the small 14th-century church of St. Pierre and over to busy Rue Carnot, then walk back to the palace on Rue de la Croix.
Avignon’s Old Town is a charming neighborhood of shopping lanes, narrow residential streets and little back alleys, perfect for strolling. Some of these routes are exclusively for pedestrians, especially in the shopping center just southeast of Place de l’Horloge.
This historic center can easily be seen on foot in one day, for it is a compact zone about one-half mile wide and long.
The curved shape of these streets will keep you guessing what’s around the bend, or which museum or monument is coming up next. Streets are level, riddled with little plazas, fountains, trees, some benches, and numerous cafes.
While this neighborhood is very old, the shops and galleries are up-to-date with modern interiors and contemporary European items for sale.
You'll find Avignon, the capital of Provence, is a perfect home base from which to visit other nearby places like Arles, Aix-en-Provence, Pont du Gard, Nimes, Uzès, Saint-Rémy, Les Baux-de-Provence and Marseilles, which we cover in other movies.

The Italian Renaissance (Italian: Rinascimento IPA: [rinaʃːiˈmento]) was the earliest manifestation of the general European Renaissance, a period of great cultural change and achievement that began in Italy during the 14th century and lasted until the 16th century, marking the transition between Medieval and Early Modern Europe. The term Renaissance is in essence a modern one that came into currency in the 19th century, in the work of historians such as Jules Michelet and Jacob Burckhardt. Although the origins of a movement that was confined largely to the literate culture of intellectual endeavor and patronage can be traced to the earlier part of the 14th century, many aspects of Italian culture and society remained largely Medieval; the Renaissance did not come into full swing until the end of the century. The French word renaissance (Rinascimento in Italian) means "Rebirth", and the era is best known for the renewed interest in the culture of classical antiquity after the period that Renaissance humanists labeled the Dark Ages.
The Italian Renaissance is best known for its cultural achievements. Accounts of Renaissance literature usually begin with Petrarch (best known for the elegantly polished vernacular sonnet sequence of the Canzoniere and for the craze for book collecting that he initiated) and his friend and contemporary Boccaccio (author of the Decameron). Famous vernacular poets of the 15th century include the renaissance epic authors Luigi Pulci (author of Morgante), Matteo Maria Boiardo (Orlando Innamorato), and Ludovico Ariosto (Orlando Furioso). 15th century writers such as the poet Poliziano and the Platonist philosopher Marsilio Ficino made extensive translations from both Latin and Greek. In the early 16th century, Castiglione (The Book of the Courtier) laid out his vision of the ideal gentleman and lady, while Machiavelli cast a jaundiced eye on "la verità effettuale della cosa"—the actual truth of things—in The Prince, composed, in humanistic style, chiefly of parallel ancient and modern examples of Virtù. Italian Renaissance painting exercised a dominant influence on subsequent European painting (see Western painting) for centuries afterwards, with artists such as Giotto di Bondone, Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Piero della Francesca, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Perugino, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Leonardo, and Titian. The same is true for architecture, as practiced by Brunelleschi, Leon Battista Alberti, Andrea Palladio, and Bramante. Their works include Florence Cathedral, St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, and the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini (to name only a few, not to mention many splendid private residences: see Renaissance architecture). Finally, the Aldine Press, founded by the printer Aldo Manuzio, active in Venice, developed Italic type and the small, relatively portable and inexpensive printed book that could be carried in one's pocket, as well as being the first to publish editions of books in Ancient Greek. Yet cultural contributions notwithstanding, some present-day historians also see the era as one of the beginning of economic regression for Italy (there were some economic downturns due to the opening up of the Atlantic trade routes and repeated foreign invasions and interference by both France and the Spanish Empire).
By the Late Middle Ages (circa 1300 onward), Latium, the former heartland of the Roman Empire, and southern Italy were generally poorer than the North. Rome was a city of ancient ruins, and the Papal States were loosely administered, and vulnerable to external interference such as that of France, and later Spain. The Papacy was affronted when the Avignon Papacy was created in southern France as a consequence of pressure from King Philip the Fair of France. In the south, Sicily had for some time been under foreign domination, by the Arabs and then the Normans. Sicily had prospered for 150 years during the Emirate of Sicily and later for two centuries during the Norman Kingdom and the Hohenstaufen Kingdom, but had declined by the late Middle Ages.
In contrast Northern and Central Italy had become far more prosperous, and it has been calculated that the region was among the richest of Europe. The Crusades had built lasting trade links to the Levant, and the Fourth Crusade had done much to destroy the Byzantine Roman Empire as a commercial rival to the Venetians and Genoese. The main trade routes from the east passed through the Byzantine Empire or the Arab lands and onwards to the ports of Genoa, Pisa, and Venice. Luxury goods bought in the Levant, such as spices, dyes, and silks were imported to Italy and then resold throughout Europe. Moreover, the inland city-states profited from the rich agricultural land of the Po valley. From France, Germany, and the Low Countries, through the medium of the Champagne fairs, land and river trade routes brought goods such as wool, wheat, and precious metals into the region.

Barcelona, Spain, is capital of the Catalan region. We walk through its Gothic Quarter historic center and later visit the most famous building, Sagrada Familia, by Gaudi, also Parc Guell. We walk through narrow lanes in the heart of the Old City, a giant pedestrian zone dating to ancient times.
The fortified town of Carcassonne, France, with its medieval castle up on the hill is completely preserved, a walled fortress with castle in the center. We go inside the castle and on walks through the streets. Two main lanes and several side lanes make up the entire plan, so you can easily wander, looking at the shops and going to the museum.
Avignon has many ancient buildings and lots of modern shops in a comfortable pedestrian zone. Palace of the Popes grew into an imposing fortification during the 60-year papal residency and is now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage list. The pedestrian shopping district extends 10 square blocks south, providing a lot of fun streets for us to explore. Avignon’s Old Town is a charming neighborhood of pedestrian shopping lanes, narrow residential streets and little back alleys. At a half-mile wide and long, this historic center can easily be seen on foot in one day.
Arles was founded by the ancient Romans and still has a 2,000 year-old amphitheater that can hold 20,000 people, still in use today. There are a lot of narrow streets in Arles’ small pedestrian zone, with various squares with cafes around them, and many historic sites. Our walk along narrow pedestrian lanes brings us to the Place du Forum and Place de la République with the former cathedral, Église St-Trophime, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Aix-en-Provence is one of the prettiest towns in all of France, so lovely that various French surveys have named it the most desirable city in which to live and retire. The pedestrian zone of Aix is an idyllic urban landscape of pretty, low-rise buildings three and four centuries old, with a number of outdoor squares such as Place des Cardoures or the Place de l’Hotel de Ville, the City Hall square, very classy outdoor spot, with the market and the cafes around it, and street markets.
Marseille: we walk through the downtown to the waterfront marina and into the Old Town for a good overview of this second-largest city in France, a place with much historic character.
St-Remy and Les Baux, and the ancient Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard make a good day-trip from Avignon. St-Remy is noted for impressive remains of the ancient Romans at Glanum. Les Baux is a stone village carved into the rocky limestone hilltop. Pont Du Gard is an impressive Roman aqueduct, the tallest ancient bridge and the second-highest structure the Romans ever built.
Nice, main city of the French Riviera, the Côte d'Azur, has a wide beach, lovely Old Town, and impressive downtown. Day-trips from our home base in Nice will visit Antibes, Cannes, Vence, St-Paul and Monaco, easily reached by short bus or train rides.
Cannes is one of the most famous towns along the Riviera. We will stroll through its pedestrian zone and past the beaches and marina to the Old Town and main shopping street of Rue d’Antibes.
Antibes has a peaceful pedestrian neighborhood with the typical array of shops, cafes and plazas.
Monaco is the world’s richest country and second-smallest nation. We see the Monte Carlo Casino, the Palace, Old Town and we visit the small waterfront village of Villefranche.
Saint-Paul de Vence is a medieval village of stone structures that date back mostly to the 15th and 16th centuries and retains the original character of a 500-year-old stone village.
VENCE is a small village, roughly circular in shape, just 300 meters across, so we can easily see it in a few hours on foot. It is just 5 minutes by bus from St Paul, very convenient to include in our day-trip from Nice. The Old Town is a pedestrian zone with several main lanes and connecting corss-lanes, so it is delightful to walk through, away from automobile traffic. Nice and peaceful, with numerous shops and cafes to keep thinkgs interesting, and the smallest cathedral in France, built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles.
From the French Riviera we continue to the Italian Riviera, where we visit Portofino and the little villages of the Cinque Terre, and Santa Margherita Ligure.
Rome ends the trip, such amazing history, preserved sites, casual life-style and wonderful foods.

From the French Riviera we continue to the Italian Riviera, where we visit Portofino and the little villages of the Cinque Terre, and Santa Margherita Ligure.
Rome ends the trip, such amazing history, preserved sites, casual life-style and wonderful foods.

We start with Harry Potter (a joke about the war dead out of "the BIBLE")
Gregory IX burnt the witches & despatched the 6th Crusade to the holy lands. This is never denied but there is a posh debate about whether witches can actually fly on the BROOM (joke that has become the Bedroom tax). The war dead/missions/martyrs jokes are explained with the GG horses (icons for the PISO bible authors) and the CHRISTIAN STEEPLEchase at the races. Then my choice at my wedding "To Be a pilgrim". Then we get deeper into the REUCHLIN revelations (and my web site story on FAKING THE NEW TESTAMENT) on the BIBLE fraud. The Bible fraud includes the code and coded numbers that the PISOS inserted to identify that they were many of the characters and the authors. The faking up of the jesus story has almost totally displaced the gods in the heavens/skies. Arius Calpurnius Piso (alpha-omega are the first & last letters in the name). So on to Gregory IX...dies in his bed at 80/90 and the witches die globally on a bonfire. Bendict XVI Ratzinger was a cover for the Pope Benedict XV in WW1. The selection and rejection of the popes is driven by geopolitics and murderous contenders. Blackadder joke is gregoryIX who KILLED the black cats too. That is the cal PURRnius joke but they rationalised it as a satanic creation. When the cats disappear in comes the plague/black death. But it is not quite as ruthless as 8000 years back to Adam and Eve in ch 1. The Garden of Eden is actually ADEN name changed for shame in the 1960s from Aden to YEMEN. My friends who work for profit in sharing healthcare we take for granted and get massive near death pathologies ( and are in the ITU for weeks). St Malachy's prophecy on the ANTIPOPES include Benedict XIV WW1 (which Blackadder also laugh at relentlessly) as millions are sent to their deaths. The gap between the writing of the PISO story and Jesus' birth is 140 years so they write the Dr Who TARDIS time travel jokes. Popes EUGENE are the launch of EUGENICS....the refinement of the ARRIAN PISO master races. Those that understand this are the INNER CIRCLE. Ratzinger is in a safe house near lake ALBA in Rome. The horsey, golf, cricket sporting networks are explained...just the same as the coliseum. The three kings in bethlehem gift the virgin Myhrr cos it is an aphrodisiac, Santa is spanish for Saint at XMAS. Paterculus is in the PISO family. We had three popes in the great Schism but in Bohemia they were immune from plague unlike Rome & Avignon. Pius is the papal name that is the biggest PISO joke like the Life of Pi and Pie the racehorse in hollywood. Pastor is bones to flour BAKER jokes. John Paul II was the jewish pope from Poland. So GOD is no longer believed in (replaced by the Human icon) but we fear the beautiful things called chemtrails that the gods mould and the look ever so artistic...THE FEARMONGERING DIVERSION USED THROUGH HISTORY to make all the warmongers all sides in fear & agression. The evidence on the burning of witches globally has been obfuscated for reputational reasons & now Christianity runs all wars to kill all the other denominations. Where the BIBLES are printed/translated they have fault lines even in Scotland and in France (Volcanoes where WW1 started). The Jewish LUBAWITCHERS movement enslave George W Bush and Stephen Harper. But the whole of religion is a for-PROFIT scam every sect, human mesiah and BUSH typifies what our world has become. The Battle of Nicopolis took place on 25 September 1396 and resulted in the rout of an allied army of Hungarian, Bulgarian, Wallachian, French, Burgundian, German and assorted troops (assisted by the Venetian navy) at the hands of an Ottoman force, raising of the siege of the Danubian fortress of Nicopolis and leading to the end of the Second Bulgarian Empire. It is often referred to as the Crusade of Nicopolis and was the last large-scale crusade of the Middle Ages.
There were many minor crusades in the 14th century, undertaken by individual kings or knights. Most recently there had been a failed crusade against Tunisia in 1390, and there was ongoing warfare in northern Europe along the Baltic coast. After their victory at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, the Ottomans had conquered most of the Balkans, and had reduced the Byzantine Empire to the area immediately surrounding Constantinople, which they later proceeded to besiege (in 1390, 1395, 1397, 1400, 1411, 1422 and finally conquering the Byzantine capital in 1453).
In 1393 the Bulgarian tsar Ivan Shishman had lost Nicopolis — his temporary capital — to the Ottomans, while his brother, Ivan Stratsimir, still held Vidin but had been reduced to an Ottoman vassal. In the eyes of the Bulgarian boyars, despots and other independent Balkan rulers, this was a great chance to reverse the course of the Ottoman conquest and free the Balkans from Islamic rule. In addition, the frontline between Islam and Christianity had been moving slowly towards the Kingdom of Hungary. The Kingdom of Hungary was now the frontier between the two religions in Eastern Europe, and the Hungarians were in danger of being attacked themselves. The Republic of Venice feared that an Ottoman control of the Balkan peninsula, which included Venetian territories like parts of Morea and Dalmatia, would reduce their influence over the Adriatic Sea, Ionian Sea and Aegean Sea. The Republic of Genoa, on the other hand, feared that if the Ottomans would gain control over River Danube and the Turkish Straits, they would eventually obtain a monopoly over the trade routes between Europe and the Black Sea, where the Genoese had many important colonies like Caffa, Sinop and Amasra. The Genoese also owned the citadel of Galata, located at the north of the Golden Horn in Constantinople, to which Bayezid had laid siege in 1395.
In 1394, Pope Boniface IX proclaimed a new crusade against the Turks, although the Western Schism had split the papacy in two, with rival popes at Avignon and Rome, and the days when a pope had the authority to call a crusade were long past.
The two decisive factors in the formation of the last crusade were the ongoing Hundred Years' War between Richard II's England and Charles VI's France and the support of Philip II, Duke of Burgundy. In 1389, the war had ground to one of its periodic truces. Further, in March 1395, Richard II proposed a marriage between himself and Charles VI's daughter Isabella in the interests of peace and the two kings met in October 1396 on the borders of Calais to agree to the union and agree to lengthen the Truce of Leulinghem. The support of Burgundy, among the most powerful of the French nobles was also vital. In 1391, Burgundy, trying to decide between sending a crusade to either Prussia or Hungary, sent his envoy Guy de La Trémoille to Venice and Hungary to evaluate the situation. Burgundy originally envisioned a crusade led by himself and the Dukes of Orléans and Lancaster, though none would join the eventual crusade. It was very unlikely that defense against the Turks was considered a particularly important goal of the crusade. Burgundy's interest in sponsoring the crusade was in increasing his and his house's prestige and power and, historian Barbara Tuchman notes, "since he was the prince of self-magnification, the result was that opulent display became the dominant theme; plans, logistics, intelligence about the enemy came second, if at all." In 1394, Burgundy extracted 120,000 livres from Flanders, sufficient to begin preparations for a crusade, and in January 1395 sent word to Sigismund, the King of Hungary that an official request to the King of France would be accepted. (Sigismund became Holy Roman Emperor in 1433).
In August, Sigismund's delegation of four knights and a bishop arrived in the court of Paris to paint a description of how "40,000" Turks were despoiling and imperiling Christian lands and beg, on Sigismund of Hungary's behalf, for help. Charles VI, having secured a peace with England through the marriage of his daughter, was able to reply that "as chief of the Christian kings" it was his responsibility to protect Christianity and punish Sultan Bayezid. French nobility responded enthusiastically to the declaration; Philip of Artois, Count of Eu, the Constable of France, and Jean Le Maingre, the Marshal of France, declared participation in the crusade the duty of every "man of valor"

This is one of the great cathedrals of Rome. It is known as the Papal Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, a cathedral church of the Diocese of Rome and the official ecclesiastical seat of the Bishop of Rome. It is the oldest of the four Papal Basilicas of Rome, ranking above all other churches in the Catholic church, including St. Peter's Basilica, with the designation of the title Archbasilica. The structure has quite a lot of history attached to it: it stands over the ruins of a fort of the imperial bodyguard established by Septimius Severus in 193, and the rest of the site had been occupied by the palace of the gens Laterani, hence the name, during the early Roman Empire. Constantine took it over later upon marrying Fausta, but he later granted it to the Bishop of Rome, possibly during the pontificate of the Pope Miltiades, hosting the synod of bishops which declared Donatism as heresy in 313. It eventually became the residence of Pope St. Sylvester I, and the cathedral of Rome. He also presided over the official dedication of the basilica and the adjacent Lateran Palace in 324.
Such was its wealth and renown, due in large part to donations made by popes and other benefactors that it was known even in its early years as the Basilica Aurea, which unfortunately drew the attention of attacking armies, including the Vandals, who stripped it of all its treasures. It was restored in 460 by Pope Leo I, and again at the behest of Pope Hadrian, but it was nearly destroyed entirely during an earthquake in 897, reportedly collapsing "from the altar to the doors," to the degree that it was even difficult to reconstruct the lines of the old building. Reconstruction efforts commenced on a new church which lasted until 1308 when it was destroyed by fire, then rebuilt by Pope Clement V and John XXII. This structure was burned also, in 1360, and was rebuilt by Pope Urban V. It has retained its ancient form despite the destructions, although few traces remain of the original structure. It is divided by rows of columns and aisles, featuring a peristyle surrounded by colonnades with fountains in the middle in the facing courtyard, which is a conventional Late Antique format also used at St. Peter's Basilica.
There were several reconstructions before Pope Sixtus V's major renovations which gave it much of the appearance it has now. The original Lateran palace was also demolished and replaced by a new one. Another of its interesting features: The obelisk which stands there now is known as the Lateran Obelisk, the largest standing one in the world, estimated to weigh 455 tons, commissioned by pharaoh Thutmose III and situated before the great temple of Karnak in Thebes. Constantius II had it shipped to Rome where it was set up in the Circus Maximus in 357. At some point it was broken and buried under the Circus, but it was rediscovered and re-erected in the 16th century. Renovation on the interior began under Francesco Borromini, commissioned by Pope Innocent X, when the 12 niches were created and filled with statues of the apostles. Clement XII actually initiated a competition for the façade: the winner was Alessandro Galilei, who completed it in 1735. All remnants of the traditional basilica architecture were at that time removed.
It was occupied by every pope from Miltiades until the reign of French Pope Clement V who transferred the official seat of the Catholic church to Avignon in 1309 during the schism, and as such, several popes are interred here. There are six extent papal tombs, including those of Alexander III, Sergius IV, Clement XII Corsini, martin V, Innocent III and Leo XIII, the last pope not to be entombed in St. Peter's Basilica. Reportedly a dozen additional papal tombs were constructed beginning in the 10th c. but they were destroyed in the two fires of the 14th c. Their remains were collected and reburied in a polyandrum. There may also have been several other popes whose tombs are unknown. John X (914-928) was the first pope to be buried within the walls of Rome, possibly because of rumors that he was murdered by Theodora. Other important nearby features include the Lateran Baptistry, where legend states that Constantine I was baptized (although this is almost certainly untrue, though he may indeed have patronized and embellished the structure) and the Scala Sancta, whose white marble steps Jesus Christ is said to have graced upon his ascent to the praetorium of the Palace of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem, brought to Rome reportedly by St. Helena, the mother of Constantine. This site is one of the most important in Rome, and is probably the major pilgrimage site in the city other than the Vatican.

VATICAN CITY
Vatican City is a walled enclave within the city of Rome. With an area of approximately 44 hectares (110 acres), and a population of 842,[3] it is the smallest internationally recognized independent state in the world by both area and population.
It is an ecclesiastical[3] or sacerdotal-monarchical[7] state ruled by the Bishop of Rome — the Pope. The highest state functionaries are all Catholic clergy of various national origins. Since the return of the Popes from Avignon in 1377, they have generally resided at the Apostolic Palace within what is now Vatican City, although at times residing instead in the Quirinal Palace in Rome or elsewhere.
SPHERE WITHIN A SPHERE
Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro is known to construct enormous spheres with layers of complexities. One of his monumental orbs stands tall as the centerpiece of the Courtyard of the Pinecone at the Vatican Museum. The structure titled Sfera con Sfera, translated as Sphere within a Sphere, is a bronze statue that appears golden as the sun shines down on it. It is 4 meters (a little over 13 feet) in diameter.
