An expedition to recover a 50-year-old mummified body buried in snow on Mexico’s tallest mountain is planned for early Thursday. The mummified body was found by a group of hikers on March 1 on the north side of Pico de Orizaba, 17,390 feet above sea level. Situated at the border of Puebla and Veracruz states in south-central Mexico, the 18,400-foot mountain is the country’s tallest. "It's a mummy, must have been 50 years or more since the accident,” Hilario Aguilar, president of the Mexican Alpine Club in Chalchicomula de Sesma, told El Universal. The body’s skull and a hand were discovered when one of the mountaineers approaching the summit fell about 100 feet before stopping by nailing an ax in the snow. After seeing the news, Reyna Espinoza Camargo believed that the mummified corpse found was her brother, Juan Espinoza Camargo, who in 1958 at the age of 17 climbed the mountain with an expedition and was presumed dead after an avalanche struck the group. "I was very young, but I remember that it was the first of November, and on the next day, I went back to my house and was told by my parents that there had been an accident. A big avalanche reached them. They've found some bodies, but some haven't been found yet," Reyna told Central. The Camargo family never lost hope and continues hiring hikers to search for Juan's body every 10 or 15 years.
