This two-day conference considered how the many Nahua contributors to the Florentine Codex and their Spanish interpreter, Fray Bernardino de Sahagún, used images and alphabetic texts to represent themselves and their cultures to mixed audiences in Mexico and Europe during the late 16th century. Participants examined the epistemological implications of a process that culminated in this unique manuscript, the product of a complex intercultural dialogue.

Travel video about destination Mexico.
Mexico, land of the Maya and Aztec, temples and beaches and with a population of twenty-six million the bubbling metropolis of Mexico City is a maze of streets, flat roofs, skyscrapers and parks. Earthquakes, floods and civil wars created this ‘City Of The Aztecs’. Templo Mayor, the main temple of the Aztecs, lies in the centre of the city, in the large main square, Zocalo. The magnificent Catedral Metropolitana with its massive dimensions and fine stone masonry dominates the square, with equal prominence being given to the Palacinio Nacional, governmental seat of the Mexican President. In 1519, when the Spanish conquerors reached Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec kingdom, they discovered a lagoon paradise with floating gardens, Xochimilco, a labyrinth of lakes and canals, which today can be explored by boat. Known as the Pearl Of The Pacific, Acapulco is a world famous holiday resort of the rich and famous where luxury liners dock each day and endless golden sands beckon a swim under the Caribbean sun. Each evening, the famous cliff jumpers of Acapulco congregate when, from a height of 42 metres, they jump fearlessly from the top of the La Quebrada Cliff into the narrow bay below. In the legendary ruins of Palenque, numerous monuments of the Maya culture can be found such as a palace, and several pyramids and temples. From the air, there is a unique view of the lush growth of the impenetrable forests around Palenque, and of Mexico’s most beautiful waterfalls of Agua Azul. Chichen Itza is thought to have been built by the Mayas around 450 AD and over 500 years later the fighting TOLTEKEN took over the deserted city, which led to two hundred years of prosperity. Located in the north, Tequila is situated at the foot of the likewise named volcano and is world famous because it is here that the Mexican national drink is produced. But Mexico is much more than a drink…it is a feast for all the senses!

Travel video about destination Mexico City in Mexico.
Mexico City is a vivid metropolis and cosmopolitan city situated on a plateau in the central highlands at an altitude of 2, 286 metres, where the food is spicy and the Tequila flows freely! The city's fascinating history is reflected in both its art and architecture with age old charm, Indian roots and elegant buildings.
Until the Spanish conquest, the Templo Mayor was the setting of coronations and human sacrifice. The remains of the walls within which thousands of priests once lived are only a few steps from the buildings of the country's former Spanish conquerors.
Construction of the country's largest cathedral, the Catedral Metropolitana, took 250 years. The lower section is quite plain but the upper section is of Baroque and Neo-Classical design. Spanish administrative buildings and private houses in the heart of the city have replaced the temples of ancient Mexico and has resulted in a synthesis of both old and new architectural styles.
An elevator ascends the Torre Latino America, an earthquake-proof tower that was built in 1958. A viewing platform provides a wonderful panoramic view that includes the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Juárez Monument.
Located 50 kilometres from Mexico City are the ancient remains of Teotihuacan that was once a centre of trade, art and ritual ceremonies.
At its zenith in 500 A.D., it was as large as Rome and its Sun Pyramid is one of the greatest building achievements of ancient times. In 1988 ,Unesco attributed this complex as being 'one of the most important cultural centres of mankind'.
The author Pablo Neruda once said: 'No other land on Earth possesses such remarkable human profoundness than Mexico and its inhabitants'. For surprises, sights and history galore, Mexico has to be at the top of the list!

Surrounded by the warm waters of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is famed for its sunshine, history, and wild nightlife. Come to this former Mexican fishing village turned resort town to join legions of fellow sun worshippers – just don’t forget to pack sunscreen.
Your Cancun tour should stop at the Acuario Interactivo, where you can meet mariachi-singing dolphins and other friendly sealife. Explore the vast historical offerings of Cancun by heading to the Yucatan interior, where you’ll find ancient Mayan cities available to tour. A day trip to Chichen Itza, one of the world’s Seven Modern Wonders, is another must. Wander through its ancient streets and take in the temples, an observatory, and even a sporting arena.
At sunset, your Cancun sightseeing will come to a dazzling conclusion amid the wild nightlife. Watch shows, go dancing, attend parties, and make sure you’ve got your camera out. It all begins anew the next day; morning in Cancun means more time to make sun-drenched memories that will last a lifetime.

Colonial Church Re-Emerges From Reservoir
The drought that has plagued parts of Mexico led to an exciting discovery after a colonial church was revealed in the middle of a reservoir.
The Nezahualcoyotl reservoir, which is located in southern Mexico, has dropped more than 80 feet as a result of this year's drought, the Associated Press reports.
With the dipping water, the remains of the Temple of Santiago has come into view.
Architect Carlos Navarete, who has written extensively about the structure for Mexican officials, told the AP that the church was likely built around the same time as a nearby monastery that dates back to 1564.
"The church was abandoned due the big plagues of 1773-1776," Navarete said.
The water didn't start to cover the church until nearly two centuries later, however, as the reservoir flooded the area when the dam was built in 1966, according to the AP.
This isn't the first time that fluctuations in the water level have led to a re-emergence of the church. The AP reports that in 2002, the water was so low that people were able to walk inside the church.

Haciendas features traditional and modern hacienda architecture in Mexico and southwestern United States. Sumptuous photography portrays the increasing fascination with hacienda architecture today, as evidenced by the movement to renovate classic adobe homes, the abundance of new hacienda designs, and the inspiration Spanish colonial architecture provides to homeowners, designers, and architects worldwide. The estate hacienda was traditionally the family home for Spanish nobles in the newly settled Mexican territories and included farmed land, orchards, stables, livestock, and servants. These extraordinary homes, many of which are owned by descendants of the original owners, are being meticulously preserved, or carefully transformed, into popular inns and tourist attractions. Today, the style is influencing residences throughout North America. With more than 250 photographs, Linda Leigh Paul presents the best haciendas, representing past and present designs: From large country estates to small adobe hideaways, the rugged beauty, rich color palette, and natural materials of the hacienda are brought to life in a book that is as delightful as a walk through the adobe arches and cool, tiled rooms of a Spanish colonial casa.

This book is a richly detailed examination of social interaction in the city of Chihuahua, a major silver mining center of colonial Mexico. Founded at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the city attracted people from all over New Spain, all summoned "by the voices of the mines of Chihuahua." These included aspiring miners and merchants, mestizo and mulato workers and drifters, Tarahumara Indians indigenous to the area, Yaquis from Sonora, and Apaches from New Mexico. Several hundred Spaniards, principally from Northern Spain, also arrived, hoping to make their fortunes in the New World.

Starting 1769, colonial authorities promoted the newly created Royal Lottery as an attractive substitute for illegal games in New Spain. But how did the Spanish Crown succeed in “selling” the new product to its subjects? What role did the staging, display, and promotion of specific emotions play in lottery propaganda in XVIIth-century Mexico? This presentation seeks to answer these questions through a detailed study of the emotional palette that accompanied the emergence of lottery consumption in New Spain. Dr. Villa-Flores discusses in particular the challenges faced by the Spanish crown to secure and keep the consumers’ trust as a form of emotional commitment to the state, its products, and the reformists’ ideals of late colonial governmentality.
Javier Villa-Flores is Associate Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the author of Carlo Ginzburg: The Historian as Theoretician (University of Guadalajara, 1995) as well as Dangerous Speech: A Social History of Blasphemy in Colonial Mexico (University of Arizona Press, 2006), that analyzes representation, prosecution and punishment of blasphemous speech in New Spain from 1520 to 1700. He was an Institute for the Humanities Faculty Fellow in 2002-2003. His research has been supported by the Program for Cultural Cooperation Between Spain’s Ministry of Culture and United States, and the National Endowment of the Humanities, among others.
