The foundations were laid in 1037; the cathedral took two decades to complete. After the pillaging of Kiev in 1169, followed by Mongolian Tatars in 1240, the cathedral fell into disrepair. Repair started in 1633 and continued until 1767. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, and during the Soviet antireligious campaign of the 1920s, the government plan called for the cathedral's destruction. The cathedral was saved from destruction; however, in 1934, Soviet authorities confiscated the structure from the church, including the surrounding 17th-18th century architectural complex and designated it as an architectural and historical museum. On 21 August 2007, the Saint Sophia Cathedral was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.
Saint Sophia Cathedral celebrated 100 years of the Greek community in Los Angeles with a liturgy officiated His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios.

Hagia Sophia (or Ayasofya in Turkish) is a grand example of surviving Byzantine architecture. Located in the Old City in Istanbul, Turkey, the current Hagia Sophia dates back to 537 and it has served as an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral, a Roman Catholic Cathedral and an Imperial Mosque before being converted into a museum in 1935.
The interior is magnificient and breathtaking. Very astounding to see both Christian and Islamic elements in the same place. It is also amazing to see how well-preserved the architecture and mosaics are, after so many centuries.
Be sure to go there early to avoid the crowds!

Paul’s HD video chronicles his Wednesday, September 17, 2014 coverage of his exploration of Kiev’s Saint Sophia Cathedral and Kiev’s Golden Gates. Saint Sophia Cathedral is one of Kiev’s major attractions and is recognized in the World Heritage List. The Golden Gates of Kiev is the historic gateway to the ancient city fortress and is a popular tourist attraction.
Paul’s risky adventure to Kiev, Ukraine was primarily to cover the September 16, 2014 Ukraine Parliament ratification of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and to assess the aftermath ramifications of the Ukraine’s historic February 18-22, 2014 Ukraine “Euromaidan” Revolution.
The “Euromaidan” movement ’s creation was originally motivated by the pro-Russian government’s 2013 termination of the proposed Association Agreement between the European Union and the Ukraine. Since then, the movement has morphed into a movement to terminate the pro-Russian government, end the dysfunctional historical relationship with Russia, end public corruption and reform Ukrainian society by guaranteeing its citizens basic human/civil rights.
After protests/unrest began in November, 2013, Kiev’s Independence Square became the main site where the final violent confrontations of the February 18-22, 2014 Ukraine “Euromaidan” Revolution took place. The revolution resulted in the Ukraine’s pro-Russian government being overthrown and the establishment of a more democratic, transparent pro-European Ukrainian government. During the violent clashes between Euromaidan supporters and the police, a 100+ people were killed and 1,000+ were injured by police gun fire/brutality in Independence Square where there are now shrines/monuments to the brave Ukrainians who gave their lives.

Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church was built by Charles Skouras in 1952, in what was then the Greek section of Los Angeles, California. This Greek Orthodox church is the result of a Hollywood success story. When Charles and his brothers, Spyros Skouras and George Skouras, were still trying to get ahead in Hollywood, Charles made a vow to God that he would build the most majestic cathedral if God would grant him success in show business. He became head of Fox West Coast, and so built the Saint Sophia in Los Angeles. The church has a simple exterior and more decorated interior. Members of the church congregation have included Hollywood actors such as Telly Savalas, whose funeral was held there, and George Chakiris; Sharon Lawrence was married at the church in 2002.

The Cathedral of Holy Wisdom in Polotsk was built by Prince Vseslav Briacheslavich (r.1044–1101) between 1044 (it is first mentioned in the Voskresenskaia Chronicle under the year 1056) and 1066. It stands at the confluence of the Polota and Western Dvina Rivers on the eastern side of the city and is probably the oldest church in Belarus.

The Ascension Cathedral in the town of Sophia (now a part of Pushkin) in the vicinity of Saint Petersburg, was one of the first purely Palladian churches to be built in Russia. Rather paradoxically, it may also be defined as "the first example of Byzantinism in Russian architecture".
The cathedral was founded in July 1782 at the instigation of Catherine II of Russia. The Tsarina, eager to liberate Constantinople from the Turks, wished to have a replica of the Hagia Sophia in the proximity of the Catherine Palace where she spent her summers. But the first project - an exact copy of the Hagia Sophia - was very expensive.
Then the Empress called upon her favourite architect, Charles Cameron, to design this "Byzantinesque" church, but the Scottish architect, though well versed in the Palladian idiom, had a vague idea of what Byzantine architecture stood for. His design called for an austere and monumental whitewashed exterior, with Doric porticoes on each side, probably a reference to the works of Lord Burlington.

Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev is an outstanding architectural monument of Kievan Rus'. Today, it is one of the city's best known landmarks and the first Ukrainian patrimony to be inscribed on the World Heritage List along with the Kiev Cave Monastery complex. Aside from its main building, the cathedral includes an ensemble of supporting structures such as a bell tower, the House of Metropolitan, and others. In 2011 the historic site was reassigned from the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Regional Development of Ukraine to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. The foundations were laid in 1037; the cathedral took two decades to complete. After the pillaging of Kiev in 1169, followed by Mongolian Tatars in 1240, the cathedral fell into disrepair. Repair started in 1633 and continued until 1767. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, and during the Soviet antireligious campaign of the 1920s, the government plan called for the cathedral's destruction. The cathedral was saved from destruction; however, in 1934, Soviet authorities confiscated the structure from the church, including the surrounding 17th-18th century architectural complex and designated it as an architectural and historical museum. On 21 August 2007, the Saint Sophia Cathedral was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.

The “Euromaidan” movement ’s creation was originally motivated by the pro-Russian government’s 2013 termination of the proposed Association Agreement between the European Union and the Ukraine. Since then, the movement has morphed into a movement to terminate the pro-Russian government, end the dysfunctional historical relationship with Russia, end public corruption and reform Ukrainian society by guaranteeing its citizens basic human/civil rights.
After protests/unrest began in November, 2013, Kiev’s Independence Square became the main site where the final violent confrontations of the February 18-22, 2014 Ukraine “Euromaidan” Revolution took place. The revolution resulted in the Ukraine’s pro-Russian government being overthrown and the establishment of a more democratic, transparent pro-European Ukrainian government. During the violent clashes between Euromaidan supporters and the police, a 100+ people were killed and 1,000+ were injured by police gun fire/brutality in Independence Square where there are now shrines/monuments to the brave Ukrainians who gave their lives.

When Charles and his brothers, Spyros Skouras and George Skouras, were still trying to get ahead in Hollywood, Charles made a vow to God that he would build the most majestic cathedral if God would grant him success in show business. He became head of Fox West Coast, and so built the Saint Sophia in Los Angeles. The church has a simple exterior and more decorated interior. Members of the church congregation have included Hollywood actors such as Telly Savalas, whose funeral was held there, and George Chakiris; Sharon Lawrence was married at the church in 2002.

Today, it is one of the city's best known landmarks and the first Ukrainian patrimony to be inscribed on the World Heritage List along with the Kiev Cave Monastery complex. Aside from its main building, the cathedral includes an ensemble of supporting structures such as a bell tower, the House of Metropolitan, and others. In 2011 the historic site was reassigned from the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Regional Development of Ukraine to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. One of the reasons for that move was the fact that both "Sofia Kyivska" and Kiev Pechersk Lavra are recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Program.

Sometimes when you travel somewhere you don't need to spend a lot of time in that particular city and/or country to form distinct memories and impressions. For us, our brief four day stay in Sofia, Bulgaria certainly fit the bill. From amazing local cuisine to street performances, we tried our best to see and do as much as we possibly could in short period of time. The following is a travel video we've put together highlighting the top attractions and things to do in Sofia, Bulgaria:
1) Our first day in Sofia we hit the ground taking in many street performances, getting caught up in a football mob / rally, visiting major landmarks and eating street food. These are our first impressions of Sofia.

At the entrance to the president’s palace, the changing of the guards ceremony is a popular attraction. Dressed in red-white parade uniforms with lace jackets and feathered hats that date back to the nineteenth century, the soldiers goose-step a pre-determined route. The transformation of Sofia into a lively, cosmopolitan capital has succeeded well with history and tradition still very much in evidence. Young, modern and exciting with all the flair of the mystical Balkans!

Vidin is dominated by the Baba Vida Fortress whose impressive towers and bastion date back to the thirteenth century. From the banks of the Danube the north western entrances to the mediaeval realm were strictly controlled and the fortress protected it from invasion by ship. Varna is the biggest city on the Black Sea coast and is one of Europe’s oldest cities. The golden, shining domes of the impressive cathedral in the city centre are one of its main landmarks. The caves of western Rhodopes are the main destination for many of the region’s visitors, such as the Jagodina Cave that is ten kilometres long and extends up to five levels within the limestone mountains. It is the longest and deepest of the Rhodopes and its tunnels and huge galleries feature traces of prehistoric inhabitants. Bulgaria – on the border of both Occident and Orient - a country full of history and natural beauty with authentic culture and overwhelming hospitality. A colourful mixture of fascinating tribes with a large variety of tradition and, according to legend, a part of paradise that God gifted to the Bulgarian people!

On our last day of exploring Sofia, Bulgaria we witnessed a talented performance by Bulgarian breakdancers, visited Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, ate giant slabs of pizza and randomly wandered around before finally arriving at the train station for a trip back to Istanbul, Turkey.
In many ways it was shocking that our time in Sofia, Bulgaria had expired.
It felt as though we had just arrived via train from Istanbul, Turkey. In a few short days we had already witnessed many street performances, ate chushki burek and drank rakia.
The quirky charms of Sofia had begun to win us over; yet, it was our last day in the city.
With just a few hours to kill before we had to head back to the train station, we decided to explore the city more on foot visiting lesser frequented back-alleys and a few main attractions we missed out on during previous strolls.
As soon as we stepped out of our door we noticed a large crowd circling around what appeared to be some kind of street performance.
As I inched my closer to the front, I noticed a group of Bulgarian men breakdancing, also known as b-boying, in unison.
Breakdancing is hugely popular in South Korea. On many occasions I had witnessed performances in popular shopping districts in Seoul, South Korea.
I had no idea it was popular in Bulgaria: just another one of Sofia's many surprises.
With little time to spare we headed straight for Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the main landmarks in the city.
This imposing ornate building is a Bulgarian Orthodox Cathedral built in Neo-Byzantine style.
When we set foot inside it was surprisingly empty.
Having checked this Cathedral off of our list of places to visit, the rest of our time was spent randomly wandering around back-alleys and lesser known streets nearby the downtown area.
The bright colors of the building and the high volume of graffiti and street art reminded me a lot of specific barrios in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Sofia, a very pedestrian friendly city, has a bit of a rough edge to it which I like.
After devouring a giant slab of pizza we realized we were short on time and headed to the train station.
As we waited to board our train we marveled at the Soviet-style station, which featured several massive jagged monuments.
Minutes before our train arrived, we tried feeding a dog some crispy pretzels. After it refused, a chubby well fed pigeon came and nibbled on it.
A rather fitting way to end what was a quirky time spent in Bulgaria, a country I'm itching to visit again soon in the future.

On our last day of exploring Sofia, Bulgaria we witnessed a talented performance by Bulgarian breakdancers, visited Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, ate giant slabs of pizza and randomly wandered around before finally arriving at the train station for a trip back to Istanbul, Turkey.
In many ways it was shocking that our time in Sofia, Bulgaria had expired.
It felt as though we had just arrived via train from Istanbul, Turkey. In a few short days we had already witnessed many street performances, ate chushki burek and drank rakia.
The quirky charms of Sofia had begun to win us over; yet, it was our last day in the city.
With just a few hours to kill before we had to head back to the train station, we decided to explore the city more on foot visiting lesser frequented back-alleys and a few main attractions we missed out on during previous strolls.
As soon as we stepped out of our door we noticed a large crowd circling around what appeared to be some kind of street performance.
As I inched my closer to the front, I noticed a group of Bulgarian men breakdancing, also known as b-boying, in unison.
Breakdancing is hugely popular in South Korea. On many occasions I had witnessed performances in popular shopping districts in Seoul, South Korea.
I had no idea it was popular in Bulgaria: just another one of Sofia's many surprises.
With little time to spare we headed straight for Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the main landmarks in the city.
This imposing ornate building is a Bulgarian Orthodox Cathedral built in Neo-Byzantine style.
When we set foot inside it was surprisingly empty.
Having checked this Cathedral off of our list of places to visit, the rest of our time was spent randomly wandering around back-alleys and lesser known streets nearby the downtown area.
The bright colors of the building and the high volume of graffiti and street art reminded me a lot of specific barrios in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Sofia, a very pedestrian friendly city, has a bit of a rough edge to it which I like.
After devouring a giant slab of pizza we realized we were short on time and headed to the train station.
As we waited to board our train we marveled at the Soviet-style station, which featured several massive jagged monuments.
Minutes before our train arrived, we tried feeding a dog some crispy pretzels. After it refused, a chubby well fed pigeon came and nibbled on it.
A rather fitting way to end what was a quirky time spent in Bulgaria, a country I'm itching to visit again soon in the future.

Today we're outside of Hagia Sophia. One of the true landmarks of Istanbul. And over the years this has been an Orthodox Cathedral, a Roman Catholic Cathedral and a mosque.
It's nice being VIP with our Istanbul museum passes. We don't have to wait here.
So Hagia Sophia was built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian. And at the time it was one of the largest Christian Basilicas in the whole world.
So right now we're climbing up to the second level, so that we can get a better view of the church.

Today they're doing some restoration work to preserve both its Christian and Muslim past. So many of the Christian mosaics have been uncovered even though they had once been plastered over. At the same time you can see some of the Arabic writing with readings from the Koran. So it's a nice balance between the two faiths.
