German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier dismissed on April 12 calls from the radical Left party to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to this year's summit of the Group of Seven industrial powers. The leaders of G7 nations held a summit without Putin last year in protest against Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region. With little sign of bloodshed in eastern Ukraine ending despite a ceasefire deal agreed in Minsk two months ago, the exclusion has continued. Thousands of demonstrators rallied in southern German town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Saturday to protest the upcoming summit of the G7 group of world’s wealthiest nations.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will host the summit on June 7-8, at the luxury hotel Schloss Elmau near the town, to discuss global economic and political issues together with U.S. President Barack Obama and leaders of other G7 nations Britain, Canada, France, Italy and Japan.
Anti-war activists and environmentalists who oppose the policies of the G7 states rallied amid massive police presence on Saturday, some 15 kilometers from the Schloss Elmau.
Around seven thousand demonstrators from various cities across Germany and Europe joined the rally in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, according to the organizers. Protestors shouted anti-G7 and anti-capitalist slogans behind a banner, that read: “Fight G7: Fight together against capitalism, racism and war!”
"Long live international solidarity!", "Stop G7", they chanted.
Skirmishes between police and protestors occurred during the planned march in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen city center. Police used pepper spray and arrested a number of demonstrators. Organizers accused police for provoking protestors.
A spokeswoman for the Munich police told Anadolu Agency that information on the exact number of arrests and injured protestors was not readily available, and would be communicated to the press later in the day.
German authorities have deployed around 25 thousand police in and around Garmisch-Partenkirchen, ahead of the two-day G7 summit.
Police set up high security zone in the four square kilometers surrounding the Schloss Elmau and also imposed strict controls for those traveling to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
“StopG7Elmau” initiative, which organized the rally on Saturday, has announced that it will continue demonstrations as G7 leaders meet at the Schloss Elmau on Sunday and Monday.
StopG7Elmau is a platform bringing together anti-capitalist groups, anti-war activists, globalization opponents and environmentalists.
The protestors are opposing the neo-liberal policies of the G7 states and demanding suspension of talks for a free trade agreement between the U.S and the EU. They are also calling on world’s wealthiest nations to change their restrictive asylum and refugee policies and accept more refugees.

From Washington, this is VOA news. I'm David Forrest reporting. Summiteers put pressure on Russia.
U.S. President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel met together before the G7 summit in Germany.
"So this morning, as we celebrate one of the strongest alliances the world has ever known, my message to the German people is simple: We are grateful for your friendship, for your leadership. We stand together as inseparable allies in Europe and around the world.”
Mr. Obama and Mrs. Merkel agreed that economic sanctions against Russia should only be eased when Russia implements an agreed-upon truce in eastern Ukraine.
Turkey's leading party lost its absolute majority in parliamentary elections on Sunday -- a setback for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's bid to rewrite the nation's constitution and create a presidential democracy. Dorian Jones takes a look.
While the AKP will remain the largest party in parliament, it suffered heavy losses in Sunday's election.
A faltering economy is cited as a key factor behind the losses after a decade of unprecedented economic growth for Turkey. But it was the success of the pro-Kurdish HDP in breaking through the 10 percent vote count threshold that did the most damage to the AK Party. The around 70 seats it secured will come almost exclusively from the governing party, its chief rival in the Kurdish regions.

Iraqi forces advanced on the town of Baiji on Sunday in a bid to reclaim the area from the Islamic State group. Military officials say government troops gained ground overnight.
IS forces have targeted oil production sites in Iraq and Syria, using the revenue from sales to fund their operations.

Airstrikes by a Saudi-led coalition in the Yemeni capital Sunday killed at least 44 people, including civilians. The bombings targeted the headquarters of Yemen's armed forces in rebel-held Sana'a.
The attacks come a week before the scheduled start of peace talks between rival political factions.
Protesters burned ballot boxes in several troubled states in southern Mexico Sunday in an attempt to disrupt mid-term elections that are being seen as a test for President Enrique Peña Nieto.
Eighty million people are eligible to select the lower house of Congress, hundreds of mayors and nine governors.
British official Captain Nick Cooke-Priest says as many as half a million people in Libya are thinking about crossing the Mediterranean Sea this summer heading to Europe.
On Sunday, Britain's Ministry of Defense said the warship HMS Bulwark had been dispatched to rescue at least 500 of the migrants.
Also on Sunday, an Italian coast guard ship carrying 316 migrants from three separate operations off Libya's coast docked at an Italian port.
There is fighting in northeastern Afghanistan where officials say a counteroffensive is underway to retake control of a remote district captured by the Taliban on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the United Nations is warning the intensifying Afghan conflict is taxing humanitarian capacities. Ayaz Gul has a report.
The fighting broke out on Saturday when hundreds of heavily armed Taliban insurgents assaulted and laid siege to the mountainous Yamgan district in Badakhshan province.
Provincial authorities insist Afghan security forces engaged the assailants for several hours before they "tactically retreated to prevent civilian casualties.”
On Sunday, defense officials said ground and air forces are engaged in a counter operation to retake the remote district.
A spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry, Dawlat Waziri, tells VOA that national troops are close to ousting the Taliban from Yamgan.

A new worldwide survey on climate change shows nearly 80 percent of the public is "very concerned" about the impact of global warming, and they say all nations should do their part to stop it.
The poll was taken in 79 countries by a group calling itself World Wide Views on Climate and Energy.
Ten thousand people met simultaneously on Saturday to debate climate change and to take the survey. Organizers say it was the largest-ever global citizens meeting on the issue.
Nearly half of those asked believe the world should give up exploring for fossil fuel reserves, such as oil and coal -- two of the chief sources of pollution.

24 SEVEN Exclusive: PM Harper attends the G-7 Schloss Elmau Summit
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier dismissed on April 12 calls from the radical Left party to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to this year's summit of the Group of Seven industrial powers. The leaders of G7 nations held a summit without Putin last year in protest against Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region. With little sign of bloodshed in eastern Ukraine ending despite a ceasefire deal agreed in Minsk two months ago, the exclusion has continued. Gregor Gysi, parliamentary leader of the Left party that includes some former East German communists, has argued that Russia was needed to help solve international crises and the G7 should therefore once again be expanded into the G8. Chancellor Angela Merkel will host leaders from the United States, Britain, France, Canada, Italy and Japan at a castle in Bavaria in June. "It is not in our interests to isolate Russia in the long term. But after the illegal annexation of Crimea, we cannot just act as if nothing has happened and carry on 'business as usual'," Steinmeier told Die Welt newspaper. He agreed it was desirable to get Russia more involved in helping resolve conflicts in Syria, Yemen and Libya, but insisted the G8 group remained closed for now. "The way back to the Group of Eight will come through respecting the unity of Ukraine and implementing Russian obligations in the Minsk (ceasefire) agreement," he said.

From Washington, this is VOA news. I'm David Forrest reporting. The G7 warns Russia.
Leaders from the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations say they will stiffen economic sanctions against Russia unless the Russians fully implement a cease-fire in eastern Ukraine.
Speaking after the G7 summit in Germany, U.S. President Barack Obama said it comes down to a choice by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"He's got to make a decision. Does he continue to wreck his country's economy and continue Russia's isolation in pursuit of a wrong-headed desire to recreate the glories of the Soviet empire?”
On another topic, the president said the coalition fighting the Islamic State does not have a complete strategy because it needs more commitment and recruitment from Iraq.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called on his country's political parties to act responsibly in the aftermath of elections Sunday that crushed his ruling majority in parliament. Dorian Jones reports.
The Turkish president has not spoken publicly on his AK Party's setback, but, in a written statement, he declared the nation's opinion stands above all else, and that all parties should assess their situation realistically. Mr. Erdoğan's conciliatory tone was in stark contrast to his lambasting opposition parties and their leaders in the lead-up to the vote.

A U.N. commission today reported human rights violations have been committed under the authority of the Eritrean government.
The U.N. commission of inquiry on Eritrea listed the country's president as among those mainly responsible for the abuses.
The commission says it was unable to visit Eritrea and received no response from the government.

An Iranian court has resumed the espionage trial of jailed Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian.
Rezaian (,who) has denied allegations against him, presented part of his defense on Monday at a closed-door hearing at the Revolutionary Court in Tehran.
Rezaian's lawyer said his client has been charged with espionage for allegedly collecting confidential information and handing it to hostile governments, writing a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama and acting against national security.
President Barack Obama says the United States is going to have to be much more aggressive when it comes to cyber security. The president refused to say who he believes is behind the recent hacking of U.S. government computers.
And on a net subject, the U.S. Army says it temporarily took down its website after some content was compromised in a hacking incident.
A group aligned with the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad claimed responsibility. The so-called Syrian Electronic Army boasted of the hack on Twitter, and shared an image of an anti-U.S. message posted just before the website went completely dark.
Burundi's electoral commission has recommended pushing back the dates for national elections.
The National Independent Election Commission proposed that legislative elections take place June 26, followed by the presidential election on [June] July 15 and a senatorial vote on July 24.
The proposal comes following the unrest sparked by President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to seek a third term.
Opponents say a third term would violate the constitution.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that U.S. presidents, not Congress, have the "exclusive power" to recognize foreign nations.
The court overturned a law that would have permitted Americans born in Jerusalem to list Israel as their birthplace.
Justices ruled 6-3 that Congress overstepped its authority when it approved the law in 2002 over the objections of then-President George W. Bush.

The South Korean Health Ministry has announced that the death of a sixth person from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, said the victim is an 80-year-old man who tested positive for the virus while being treated for pneumonia.

Star South African runner Oscar Pistorius could be eligible for parole by August. That comes less than a year after he was convicted in the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
South African media cite correctional officials and a member of the Pistorius family as confirming that he will be placed under house arrest.

After nine different meetings in three days, the 18th Economic Summit ended on April 9.
In addition to the economy, energy and information technologies, special sessions on economy-democracy relations and the state of humanity and where humanity is heading were conducted.
The 18th Eurasian Economic Summit saw the participation of 44 countries, with Montenegro, Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina represented at the presidential level. Azerbaijan was represented by its vice-president.
The summit’s closing session was attended by 24 leaders, including the 11th President of the Republic of Turkey, Abdullah Gül, and the current state of humanity and where humanity is heading was discussed.
Impressing the importance of dialogue within the summit, the participants insistently and carefully pointed out the significance of stability, universal qualities of peace and the United Nations Millennium convocations.
The summit’s participants emphasized that disputes could be solved with the use of dialogue, while they also discussed not interfering in domestic affairs.
The Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline Project (TANAP) was discussed, with speakers noting its importance within the field of energy and the crucial role the 1800-kilometer pipeline would play in realizing other projects. Stressing the protection of flora, fauna and potential archaeological areas the pipeline will pass through, speakers suggested the pipeline should be evaluated as a stability and democracy project in addition
to an energy one. They also expressed that TANAP will prevent energy from being used as a weapon.
The speakers also hailed the importance of the Silk Road project, remarking that today’s energy lines were replacing the simple clothing trade conducted by caravans years ago, and that information technologies have created a peaceful philosophy reaching out from Beijing and China.
In addition to its significance in energy and telecommunications, speakers discussed the Silk Road project’s cultural and social dimension as a stability and prosperity project.
The summit also had a cultural dimension, with a fashion show featuring famous designer Nej and a horse racing competition organized by the Jockey Club of Turkey called the Eurasian Economic Summit Cup Race. Montenegro President Filip Vujanovic presented an award to the owner of the winning horse.
Postage stamps in commemoration of the summit were printed by the Azerbaijan Ministry of Transportation and distributed to the summit’s participants.

At first rally, Hillary Clinton gives rationale for 2016 quest
New York (CNN)—Hillary Clinton took the stage on New York City's Roosevelt Island Saturday, looking to offer hundreds of supporters her answer to the question that has dogged her presidential campaign through its first two months: Why?
The Democratic frontrunner in the 2016 race used the stirring geography of the narrow island in New York City's East River to make a case for new economic policies designed to benefit the middle class -- and present herself as the candidate to make them happen.
"Prosperity can't be just for CEOs and hedge fund managers," Clinton told the crowd. "Democracy can't be just for billionaires and corporations. Prosperity and democracy are part of your basic bargain, too. You brought our country back. Now it's time, your time, to secure the gains and move ahead. And you know what? America can't succeed unless you succeed."
The rally marks Clinton's departure from the low-key and carefully choreographed small roundtable events that she's held in the first states to vote in the presidential nominating contest -- Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada -- since announcing her candidacy in April.

Supporters began lining up at 6:30 a.m. for a rally that wouldn't begin until four hours later. Media flocked onto the narrow island, with 550 journalists requesting credentials.
And Clinton's aides welcomed the attention, billing the rally as the real launch of her campaign -- and of the case she'll make to voters for the next year and a half.
"This will be a new moment. We have had the spring training, now it is opening day," campaign chairman John Podesta told CNN. "I think, for us, this is an opportunity to lay out really the operating manual for where she wants to take the country."
Clinton's speech was not a detailed rollout of the policies that she'll advance over the course of the campaign. Instead, the former secretary of state previewed a list of critical policy issues while unveiling the specifics of how she'd tackle those issues over the course of the summer.
Saturday's event was also a chance for Clinton to introduce herself to a large media audience. The former first lady is nearly universally known, but aides hope she will be able to present herself in a different, softer light.
"She is a well-known figure but when you're asking the American people to support you as president, even if it is for the second time, there is no skipping of steps," said Jennifer Palmieri, the campaign's communications director. "If you want to understand Hillary Clinton, and what has motivated her career of fighting for kids and families, her mother is a big part of the story."
In that effort, the entire day will focus on Clinton. Although both Bill and Chelsea Clinton attended -- the first time either will appear at a campaign event -- they will not be the focus and are not expected to speak.
Some of Clinton's high-profile supporters flocked to the city for Saturday's rally, too.
Kasim Reed, mayor of Atlanta, told CNN that he decided to attend the event because he wants to "stand with Secretary Clinton."
"I think that people have really been waiting for this aspect of the campaign to begin," Reed said. "There is an enormous amount of pent up energy to get on with the campaign and go on our and making the case to folks why she should be the 45th president."
But well-known New York Democratic figures weren't treating Clinton as their party's presumptive nominee.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio didn't attend the rally in his own backyard, saying he's waiting for Clinton to present a "larger vision" for tackling income inequality.

Republicans, looking to seize on the media attention around Clinton's event, bused supporters north from Washington on Saturday morning, with many leaving at 5:45 a.m. They handed out information about Clinton, including red sunglasses that say "Stop Clinton" and "Shady."
GOP presidential contenders, meanwhile, offered pre-buttals before Clinton even took the stage.
"Hillary Clinton's re-launch of her campaign doesn't change that her views are out-of-touch with mainstream America," Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said in a statement.
"We don't need Washington telling us what to do; we need to build the economy from the ground up with government getting out of the way," he said. "Clinton would be a third term of Obama's failed policies. Instead, we need new, fresh solutions."
The campaign rally was largely organized by Greg Hale, a long-time Clinton aide, who grew up in DeQueen, Arkansas, and met the Clintons when he was young. He started doing advance work for Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign and is the Clintons' go-to person for staging events like Saturday's.

Germany: Thousands rally in anti-G7 protest

This is VOA news.

German foreign minister rejects calls to invite Putin to G7 talks

Dorian Jones, Istanbul.
A U.N. commission today reported human rights violations have been committed under the authority of the Eritrean government.
The U.N. commission of inquiry on Eritrea listed the country's president as among those mainly responsible for the abuses.
The commission says it was unable to visit Eritrea and received no response from the government.
This is VOA news.
Bush.
Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their city.
The South Korean Health Ministry has announced that the death of a sixth person from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, said the victim is an 80-year-old man who tested positive for the virus while being treated for pneumonia.
The ministry says 87 people in South Korea have been infected with the disease.

Hillary Clinton Delivers First 2016 Presidential Campaign Speech [FULL]
