Two weeks in hockey showed sport is no escape from society's dark side

The Observer 28 Nov 2019
It's good Don Cherry is gone ... As the years of his Coach’s Corner segment wore on, Cherry’s macho blustering, his rambling monologues, his lionizing of “rock ‘em sock ‘em” hockey became ever more off-kilter with modern reality – a fact obvious to seemingly everyone but Canada’s hockey broadcasters. Cherry hung on and so did his bosses.

THOMAS: Don is gone and Hockey Night will go on

Canada Dot Com 15 Nov 2019
Don Cherry was released from his contract with Sportsnet after comments on last Saturday’s HNIC telecast ... As the owner of every edition of Rock’em Sock’em Hockey and every other annual highlight tape Cherry has put out, it pains me say I have to agree. I’m not discrediting Cherry’s patriotism or his support for Canadian veterans.

Stu Cowan: Don Cherry's comments about 'you people' were disgraceful

Canada Dot Com 10 Nov 2019
Unfortunately, the 85-year-old Cherry refuses to grow with the game. I grew up watching Cherry and remember when it was must-see TV every Saturday night. I have to admit, I rarely watch Coach’s Corner now because it has become so predictable (stuck in the old Rock’Em Sock’Em days), but I guess a lot of people still do.
