U.S. Air Force Para Jumpers (PJ) are elite special forces combat operatives tasked with locating and recovering downed airmen in any environment. Air Force Pararescuemen undergo some of the most rigorous training of any of the special operations forces in the U.S. military, with about an 80% attrition rate in the almost two year training pipeline. During "the Pipeline", Pararescuemen must also complete a 22 week Pararescue EMT-Paramedic Training course, which gives them a National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedic (NREMT-P) certification.

The Battle of Ramadi, also called the Fall of Ramadi, in 2014 and 2015 was part of an ISIL offensive to capture all of the Anbar Province. Ramadi was one of the Iraqi government's last strongholds in Anbar, after its success in a previous campaign. The battle began in October 2014 and drew to a close as Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) insurgents seized hold of government buildings on 14 May 2015. On 17 May, it was reported that the Iraqi Army and special forces fled the city, with 500 civilians and security personnel dead.

Battle of Ramadi: Iraqi Army and Special Operations Forces (ISOF) Start Their assault on the remnants of Isis inside the city. Iraqi army units and Special Operations Forces (ISOF) start the assault on ISIS in Ramadi.
For the first time, Iraqi forces engaged Islamic State fighters within the city center of Ramadi on Tuesday, reaching the edge of the inner government district in an attempt to seize the critical western provincial capital after months of approach and maneuvering, officials said.
“We went into the center of Ramadi from different axes, and we started clearing residential areas,” Gen. Sabah al-Numani, a spokesman for the army counterterrorism unit in charge of the offensive, said in a statement Tuesday. He predicted that “the city will be cleared within the coming 72 hours.”
Six hundred to 1,000 Islamic State fighters were said to have been in Ramadi when the overall offensive began two weeks ago, but several hundred of them have been killed in fighting and airstrikes since then, according to Iraqi and Western officials.
Those remaining did not appear to be giving up easily. Iraqi forces, including a mix of soldiers and policemen along with a contingent of Sunni tribal fighters, faced heavy fire and were assaulted by car bombs, Iraqi officials said. And fighters for the Islamic State destroyed three bridges over the Euphrates River to slow the security forces’ advance, according to Gen. Ahmed al-Belawi, the leader of a battalion of Sunni tribal fighters. The force crossed on Tuesday using portable bridges supplied by American forces, officials said.
If the Iraqi forces manage to fully reassert control over Ramadi — the provincial capital of Anbar Province, in the Sunni Arab heartland — it would be the most important of a series of military setbacks for the Islamic State since its explosive expansion across Iraq that began with the capture of Mosul last year.
In early April, Iraqi forces and Shiite militias drove the Islamic State out of the city of Tikrit, and in October retook control of the northern city of Baiji and its oil refinery. Last month, Kurdish and Yazidi forces assaulted the northern city of Sinjar, driving out fighters with the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL.
The capture of Ramadi, 60 miles from Baghdad, would give the government of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi a badly needed morale lift, and a successful cooperative effort with the country’s alienated Sunnis. But more important, it would allow his often disparaged military to reverse a humiliating loss.

US Air Force F-15 arrive in Bulgaria to send a message to Putin. The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven American uniformed services. Initially part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on 18 September 1947 under the National Security Act of 1947.[5] It is the most recent branch of the U.S. military to be formed, and is the largest and one of the world's most technologically advanced air forces. The USAF articulates its core functions as Nuclear Deterrence Operations, Special Operations, Air Superiority, Global Integrated ISR, Space Superiority, Command and Control, Cyberspace Superiority, Personnel Recovery, Global Precision Attack, Building Partnerships, Rapid Global Mobility and Agile Combat Support.[6]
The U.S. Air Force is a military service within the Department of the Air Force, one of the three military departments of the Department of Defense. The USAF is headed by the civilian Secretary of the Air Force, who is appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. The highest-ranking military officer in the Department of the Air Force is the Chief of Staff of the Air Force who exercises supervision over Air Force units, and serves as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Air Force combat forces and mobility forces are assigned, as directed by the Secretary of Defense, to the Combatant Commanders, and neither the Secretary of the Air Force nor the Chief of Staff have operational command authority over them.
The U.S. Air Force provides air support for surface forces[7] and aids in the recovery of troops in the field. As of 2012, the service operates more than 5,638 aircraft, 450 ICBMs and 63 satellites. It has a $140 billion budget with 332,854 active duty personnel, 185,522 civilian personnel, 71,400 Air Force Reserve personnel, and 106,700 Air National Guard personnel.[2]
Mission, vision, and functions[edit]
Missions[edit]
According to the National Security Act of 1947 (61 Stat. 502), which created the USAF:
In general the United States Air Force shall include aviation forces both combat and service not otherwise assigned. It shall be organized, trained, and equipped primarily for prompt and sustained offensive and defensive air operations. The Air Force shall be responsible for the preparation of the air forces necessary for the effective prosecution of war except as otherwise assigned and, in accordance with integrated joint mobilization plans, for the expansion of the peacetime components of the Air Force to meet the needs of war.
§8062 of Title 10 US Code defines the purpose of the USAF as:[8]
to preserve the peace and security, and provide for the defense, of the United States, the Territories, Commonwealths, and possessions, and any areas occupied by the United States;
to support national policy;
to implement national objectives;
to overcome any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States.
The stated mission of the USAF today is to "fly, fight, and win in air, space, and cyberspace".[9]
Vision[edit]
"The United States Air Force will be a trusted and reliable joint partner with our sister services known for integrity in all of our activities, including supporting the joint mission first and foremost. We will provide compelling air, space, and cyber capabilities for use by the combatant commanders. We will excel as stewards of all Air Force resources in service to the American people, while providing precise and reliable Global Vigilance, Reach and Power for the nation".[9]
Core functions[edit]
Recently, the Air Force refined its understanding of the core duties and responsibilities it performs as a Military Service Branch, streamlining what previously were six distinctive capabilities and seventeen operational functions into twelve core functions to be used across the doctrine, organization, training, equipment, leadership, and education, personnel, and facilities spectrum. These core functions express the ways in which the Air Force is particularly and appropriately suited to contribute to national security, but they do not necessarily express every aspect of what the Air Force contributes to the nation. It should be emphasized that the core functions, by themselves, are not doctrinal constructs.[10]

Air Superiority is "that degree of dominance in the air battle of one force over another which permits the conduct of operations by the former and its related land, sea, air, and special operations forces at a given time and place without prohibitive interference by the opposing force" (JP 1-02).[10]

The SASR regiment has high personnel standards, and selection into the regiment is considered the most demanding of any entry test in the Australian Army. Members of the SASR are required to work in small teams for extended periods and often without support, and are specially selected for their ability to work in this environment, rather than as individuals. Selection is open to all serving Australian Defence Force personnel. After initial screening candidates must complete the "Special Forces Barrier Test", which tests their physical fitness. About 80 to 85 percent of applicants pass this phase. Successful candidates then continue on to the 21-day SASR selection course conducted at Bindoon, Western Australia which assesses both the individual's strength and endurance (mental and physical), as well as overall fitness, ability to remain calm in combat, and to work effectively in small teams. The course is conducted by staff from the Special Forces Training Centre, which was established in 1998. Only 25 to 30 percent pass selection. These candidates then progress onto the 18 month reinforcement cycle, during which they will complete a range of courses including weapons, basic patrolling, parachuting, combat survival, signaller / medic, heavy weapons, demolitions, method of entry, and urban combat, before posting to a sabre squadron if successful. Officers must complete additional courses to qualify as an officer in the regiment, with requisite expertise in operations, administration and command. Most candidates are generally in their late-20s and are on average older than most soldiers. Despite a possible reduction in rank, SASR operators receive significant allowances, which make them among the highest-paid soldiers in the Australian Defence Force, with a trooper (equivalent to a private) earning about $100,000 per annum.
All members of the SASR are parachute qualified, and each member of a patrol has at least one specialisation, including medic, signaller, explosive expert or linguist. Each of the three sabre squadrons works on a three-year training and operational cycle, although the system is flexible and can be accelerated or varied depending on operational requirements and deployments. In the first year new members of the regiment develop their individual skills and practice the new techniques they have been taught, while more experienced members undertake advanced courses. In the second year mission skill sets for conventional warfare are trained, while in the third year clandestine tasks are practiced and the squadron becomes the online counter terrorist squadron. Counter terrorist training includes close quarters battle (CQB), explosive entry, tubular assault (in vehicles such as in buses, trains and aircraft) and in high rise buildings, as well as room and building clearance. This training is conducted in a range of advanced facilities, including electronic indoor and outdoor CQB ranges, outdoor sniper range, and urban training facilities at Swanbourne. Additional facilities include a special urban complex, vertical plunging range, method of entry house, and simulated oil rig and aircraft mock-ups in order to provide realistic training environments for potential operational scenarios. SASR personnel also provide training in weapons handling and the use of explosives to intelligence agents and members of elite police units at Swan Island in Victoria.

The Air War-Operation Desert Storm ( Gulf War ) Documentary 2016.
The Gulf War led by United States began with an extensive aerial bombing campaign on 17 January 1991 against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. The Coalition military aircraft flew over 100,000 sorties, dropping 88,500 tons of bombs, and widely destroying Iraq Air Force, anti-aircraft facilities, command and communication facilities.
The air campaign's targeted military targets throughout Iraq and Kuwait: Scud missile launchers, weapons research facilities, and naval forces. About one-third of the Coalition's air power was devoted to attacking Scuds, some of which were on trucks and therefore difficult to locate. U.S. and British special operations forces had been covertly inserted into western Iraq to aid in the search for and destruction of Scuds.
Fighter aircraft ( F-15, F-16, f14 Tomcat, F-111 Aardvark, F-4 Phantom II ) and attack aircraft Lockheed AC-130A (Spectre) Gunship, A-10 Thunderbolt II, The USAF F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter and apache helicopter played vital role in the persian gulf war.

Sub for more: http://nnn.is/the_new_media | The Pentagon has confirmed that US special operations troops who traveled to Libya were kicked out of the country as soon as they arrived. This event marks a new level of international shame and embarrassment for the United States military under the Presidency of Barack Obama and since Hillary Clinton left US Ambassador Chris Stevens to die there.
The Libyan Air Force said the 20 soldiers arrived at the airbase on Monday, but left soon after local commanders asked them to go because they had no right to be at the base “without prior coordination with protection force base.”
The Libyan air force published a Facebook post on Wednesday which included photographs of the special forces unit. It noted the 20 soldiers had disembarked “in combat readiness wearing bullet proof jackets, advanced weapons, silencers, handguns, night vision devices and GPS devices.”
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said the troops were in Libya "with the concurrence of Libyan officials to foster relationships and enhance communication with their counterparts in the Libyan National Army."

Special Jaegers (Finnish: Erikoisjääkärit) are the primary professional special operations force of the Finnish Army.
They are trained in the Utti Jaeger Regiment. The purpose of special jaeger training is to maintain and develop the special operations capability of the Army. Personnel are trained for the most demanding special operations in Finland and, when necessary, abroad. The Special Jaeger Battalion of the Utti Jaeger Regiment provides special jaeger training for reserve NCOs, reserve officers and personnel of the Defence Forces.
Previously also conscripts were trained to become Special Jaegers but in the mid 2000s the conscript training was limited to paratroopers (long range patrol reconnaissance) and Special Jaeger training for professional special forces operators was officially started. Reservists who have NCO or reserve officer training are eligible to apply for the Special Jaeger course. Previous service in the Utti Jaeger Regiment is not mandatory.

Reservists who have NCO or reserve officer training are eligible to apply for the Special Jaeger course. Previous service in the Utti Jaeger Regiment is not mandatory.

Särskilda Operationsgruppen (Special Operations Group, abbreviated SOG) is a Special Operations Force within the Swedish Armed Forces which has been active since 2011. Särskilda operationsgruppen was formed by merging the Särskilda skyddsgruppen (Special Protection Group) and Särskilda inhämtningsgruppen (Special Reconnaissance Group).
The Special Operations Group (SOG), combined with the Special Forces Command, comprises the Swedish Armed Forces Special Forces. In addition to this, there are several special operations support units. The personnel are specially selected, trained and equipped units for air, sea and land transportation, technical, logistical and medical support. For example: Special Maritime Transportation unit (STE), Special Signals Group (SSE) and the Section for Special Operative Technology (SOT).
Each troop then consists of three "teams" or patrols of four operators each.
Each operator has a broader skill base than regular soldiers and one or two patrol skills at which the operator is exceptionally skilled. A typical SOG team consists of four operators: A team leader, a demolitions expert, a radio operator and a medic. Each patrol can be augmented with, EOD technicians, JTAC-specialists or snipers.
What most people see of the operators is when they are employed as personal protection for the Supreme Commander or other high-ranking officers of the Swedish Armed Forces when they visit Swedish areas of operation. However, their most frequent usage is during multi-national special operations such as Direct Action, Special Reconnaissance and Military Assistance.
Combat missions can be to eliminate high-value targets or objects of great importance to the enemy, to conduct complex rescue operations of Swedish personnel held captive or hostage, or to gather time-critical intelligence through action.
Special reconnaissance and intelligence gathering is intended to gather information of great tactical importance about the enemy´s activities, enemy personnel or other bits of information of operational significance.
The unit maintains a high degree of readiness and can be deployed on short notice and can operate in any environment, for example jungle, desert, mountain/alpine, sub-arctic and urban.
The unit is lightly equipped for greater mobility, both tactically and strategically. SOG strive for simplicity in planning and execution, and unpredictability through unconventional and flexible methods.
SOG have been deployed in support of ISAF operations in Afghanistan.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) is a national law enforcement agency in the United Kingdom which replaced the Serious Organised Crime Agency. The NCA includes the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre as an individual command, and parts of the National Policing Improvement Agency. Some of the responsibilities of the UK Border Agency relating to border policing also became part of the NCA.
Like its predecessor SOCA, the NCA has been compared as the "British FBI" by the british media. The NCA Director-General has the power to direct regional police chiefs to concentrate their resources where necessary, effectively making him the most senior police officer in the country.
It is the UK's lead agency against organised crime; human, weapon and drug trafficking; cyber crime; and economic crime that goes across regional and international borders, but can be tasked to investigate any crime. The NCA has a strategic role in which it looks at the bigger picture across the UK, analysing how criminals are operating and how they can be disrupted. To do this it works closely with regional organised crime units, the Serious Fraud Office, as well as individual police forces. It is the UK point of contact for foreign agencies such as Interpol, Europol and other international law enforcements.
The NCA has also taken on a range of functions from the National Policing Improvement Agency that has been scrapped as part of the government's changes to policing. These include a specialist database relating to injuries and unusual weapons, expert research on potential serial killers, and the National Missing Persons Bureau.

Pakistan-China - Special Operations Exercise - Warrior III -2015
The Pak-China Joint Field Exercise Warrior-III was held at Bahdar Range in Attock district near capital Islamabad.
"Special Forces of Pakistan Army and PLA conducted a seven-week-long exercise with focus on counter-terrorism operations," the army said in a statement.
Sharif attended the closing ceremony along with a senior level Chinese military delegation under Gen Li Fayi.
He underscored that "the special relationship between Pakistan-China Armies which has transformed over time will grow to unprecedented heights".
Earlier this month, China and Pakistan had conducted joint air exercises involving several contingents of fighter jets, bombers and early warning aircraft from both sides.
The joint exercise was part of a series of military exchange programmes between the two air forces, Chinese Air Force spokesperson Shen Jinke had said.
"Both, China and Pak, will continue to work towards total elimination of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations," he said on the occasion. "He vowed to continue operations with the same momentum till the achievement of a terror free Pakistan," the statement said.
The Pakistan army is currently conducting Zarb-e-Azb, a major operation against militants in the former stronghold of the Taliban along the border with Afghanistan.

The Danish Frogman Corps is the most secretive unit of the danish special operations forces. The unit is an amphibious/maritime Special Operations Force, modeled after the british Special Boat Service (SBS), the norwegian Marinejegerkommando (MJK) and U.S Navy SEALs. It became active on June 17th, 1957, and started by a former operative from the british Special Operations Executive from Denmark. In 1970 the unit got a new commander who was inspired by the american diver and combat skimmer School and the Underwater Demolition Teams, that we know as BUD/S and Navy SEALs today.
However, since 1970, it has been an independent unit operating first with the submarine squadron, and later as part of the Naval Operational Command. They're serving both as an amphibious/maritime and landbased special operations force in same way as many other amphibious special operations forces.
They are in position of a wide range of capacities: Long Range Reconnaissance, Direct Action, Hostage Rescue, Boarding operations, Sabotage, High Value Target hunting, Close Protection and other tasks similar in scope to the U.S Navy SEAL Teams. Frømandskorpset may also conduct counterterrorist task, as well as aiding Danish police during crime investigation involving specialized diving.

Special forces, or special operations forces are military units trained to perform unconventional missions. Special forces, as they would now be recognized, emerged in the early 20th century, with a significant growth in the field during the Second World War.
Depending on the country, special forces may perform some of the following specializations: airborne operations, counter-insurgency, "counter-terrorism" , covert ops, direct action, hostage rescue, high-value targets/manhunting, intelligence operations, mobility operations, and unconventional warfare. The term Special Forces in the US refers to the US Army's forces while the term Special Operation Forces refers to all units. In Russian speaking countries special forces are typically called Spetsnaz, an acronym for "special purpose." Likewise Russian speakers refer to special forces of other nations as Spetsnaz, for example US Special Forces would be referred to as US Spetsnaz in Russian....
Russia
The Russian Spetsnaz GRU, or Russian army special forces, are considered the best trained units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The Spetsnaz have created a fierce reputation as one of the best special forces in the world today due to the very harsh standards of their training. They are controlled by the GRU. The units of Spetsnaz GRU have no official names, such as the case with units of MVD Spetsnaz. They are generally referred to by unit numbers, for example, "16th Separate Brigade of Spetsnaz", much like any other military unit.
Primary conception of strategy and tactic of application of the special forces belongs to the Russian military theorist Michael Svechnykov (Stalin killed him in 1938). He had the bold dream about creating units that could win in an unequal fight, based on the Russian military's traditional readiness to the unequal fight. Practical realization was begun by the "grandfather of the Russian spetsnaz" Ilya Starinov.
Few details are actually known about the operations of Spetsnaz GRU, but it is known that the units were heavily involved in operations in Afghanistan and Chechnya...

Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_forces

An interesting documentary on joining the Russian military special forces. Spetsnaz (Russian: спецназ; IPA: [spʲɪt͡sˈnas]) abbreviation for Войска специального назначения, tr. Voyska spetsialnogo naznacheniya, pronounced [vɐjsˈka spʲɪt͡sɨˈalʲnəvə nəznɐˈt͡ɕenʲɪjə] (English: Special Purpose Forces) is an umbrella term for special forces in Russian. Historically, the term referred to special military units controlled by the military intelligence service GRU (Spetsnaz GRU). It also describes special purpose units, or task forces of other ministries (such as the Ministry of Emergency Situations' special rescue unit)[1] in post-Soviet countries.
Etymology
The Russian acronyms SPETSNAZ (spetsialnogo naznacheniya) and OSNAZ (osobogo naznacheniya), both meaning "special purpose", are general terms used for a variety of special operations forces (or regular forces assigned to special tasks). They are syllabic abbreviations typical of early Soviet-era Russian, although many Cheka and Internal Troops units (such as OMSDON) used osobogo naznacheniya in their full names.
Spetsnaz later referred to special purpose or special operations forces, and the word's widespread use is a relatively recent, post-perestroika development in Russian language. The Soviet public used to know very little about their country's special forces until many state secrets were disclosed under the glasnost ("openness") policy of Mikhail Gorbachev during the late 1980s. Since then, stories about spetsnaz and their supposedly incredible prowess, from the serious to the highly questionable, have captivated the imagination of patriotic Russians, particularly in the background of the decay in military and security forces during perestroika and the post-Soviet era. A number of books about the Soviet military intelligence special forces, such as 1987's Spetsnaz: The Story Behind the Soviet SAS by defected GRU agent Viktor Suvorov, helped introduce the term to the Western public as well.
In post-Soviet Russia "spetsnaz" became a colloquial term as special operations (spetsoperatsiya), from police raids to military operations in internal conflicts, grew more common. Coverage of these operations, and the celebrity status of special operations forces in state-controlled media, encouraged the public to identify many of these forces by name: SOBR, Alpha, Vityaz, and so forth. The term spetsnaz has also continued to be used in several other post-Soviet states such as Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan for their own special operations forces. In Russia, foreign special operations forces are also known as "spetsnaz" (for example, United States special operations forces would be called "amerikanskiy spetsnaz").
Timeline
The concept of using special tactics and strategies was originally proposed by Russian military theorist Mikhail Svechnykov (executed during the Great Purge in 1938), who envisaged the development of unconventional warfare capabilities to overcome disadvantages faced by conventional forces in the field. Its implementation was begun by the "grandfather of the spetsnaz", Ilya Starinov.[citation needed]
During World War II, the Red Army reconnaissance and sabotage detachments were formed under the supervision of the Second Department of the General Staff of the Soviet Armed Forces. These forces were subordinate to front commanders.[2] The infamous NKVD internal security and espionage agency also had their own special purpose (osnaz) detachments, including many saboteur teams who were airdropped into enemy-occupied territories to work with (and often take over and lead) the Soviet Partisans.
In 1950, Georgy Zhukov advocated the creation of 46 military spetsnaz companies, each consisting of 120 servicemen. This was the first use of "spetsnaz" to denote a separate military branch since World War II. These companies were later expanded to battalions and then to brigades. However, some separate companies (orSpN) and detachments (ooSpN) existed with brigades until the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The spetsnaz included fourteen army brigades, two naval brigades and a number of separate detachments and companies, operating under the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) and collectively known as Spetsnaz GRU. These units and formations existed in the highest-possible secrecy, and were disguised as Soviet paratroopers (Army spetsnaz) or naval infantrymen (Naval spetsnaz) by their uniforms and insignia.
Twenty-four years after the birth of Spetsnaz, the first counter-terrorist unit was established by KGB head Yuri Andropov. From the late 1970s through the 1980s, a number of special-purpose units were created in the KGB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD).

Former United States special operations units are disbanded or otherwise inactive unconventional warfare units of the United States military. Most units were created to fulfill specific duties within a particular conflict, and were disbanded once that conflict ended. All branches of the United States armed forces – the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force have fielded special operations units. For existing special operations units, see United States Special Operations Forces.

The term Tier 1/Tier One or Special Mission Unit (SMU) is used to describe some elite special operations forces around the world. The term has been applied to four United States special operations forces units, British Special Air Service, Special Boat Service, Australian Special Air Service Regiment, Canadian JTF2 and Polish GROM. Tier 1 units have been involved in high profile military operations such as the death of Osama Bin Laden and capture of Saddam Hussein.
Tier 1 units are commanded and controlled by Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) of U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). In addition to performing highly classified activities the special mission units are also tasked with "special missions", sometimes referring to unconventional warfare, counter-terrorist activities, direct action, Special reconnaissance, and/or black operations. So far, only three Tier 1 units have been publicly disclosed: The Army's 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta, the Navy's Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), and the Air Force's 24th Special Tactics Squadron. Units from the Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment and 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (160th SOAR) are controlled by JSOC when deployed as part of JSOC Task Forces such as Task Force 121 and Task Force 145.
The Intelligence Support Activity (ISA) is also under JSOC and has been referred to as a special mission unit. The ISA collects specific target intelligence prior to SMU missions, and provides signals support, etc. during those mission. The Army once maintained the ISA, but after the September 11 attacks, the Pentagon shifted direct control to Joint Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, NC.
During the Iraq War United States' Task Force 121 was involved in Operation Red Dawn which led to the capture of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein on December 13, 2003. Earlier that year on July 22, 2003 Task Force 20, led by Delta Force operators and supported by the 101st Airborne Division, were involved in a three hour firefight in Mosul, Iraq where both of Saddam's sons, Qusay and Uday were killed.
On May 2, 2011 Osama Bin Laden was killed in a CIA-led operation where U.S. Navy SEALs from DEVGRU's Red Squadron were flown into Abottabad, Pakistan by elements of 160th SOAR from Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
Advanced Force Operations is another term used to describe some of the american Tier 1 units. AFO is a term used by the U.S. Department of Defense to describe a task force that encompasses personnel from 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D), Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU) and U.S. Army Intelligence Support Activity (ISA). According to Gen. Michael Repass, who conducted it in the Iraq War and was very familiar with its use in Afghanistan, "AFO consists of U.S. Secretary of Defense-approved military operations such as clandestine operations, source operations, and deployment of enabling forces and capabilities to conduct target-specific preparations prior to the conduct of an actual operation. It is logically part of Operational Preparation of the Battlespace (OPB), which follows the Intelligence Preparation of the Battlespace, a concept well-known in U.S. and NATO doctrine, OPB is seldom used outside of Special Operations Forces channels. OPB is defined by the U.S. Special Operations Command as "Non-intelligence activities conducted prior to D-Day, H-Hour, in likely or potential areas of employment, to train and prepare for follow-on military operations".
An AFO unit reported to JSOC in the Afghanistan War. In the Iraq War, Respass, who first commanded the 10th Special Forces Group, took control of a Joint Unconventional Warfare Task Force, which used the 5th and 10th Groups to conduct AFO. AFO units were heavily involved in Operation Anaconda and Operation Viking Hammer.

Many young men dream of joining Russia’s Special Forces. However, for that to come true, they have to pass a series of incredibly tough endurance tests. There’s no room for failure. The slightest hesitation or poor mark and they’re disqualified. For most, running 11 kilometers in full military gear, under conditions similar to a real battle, would be unbearable. But for those battling for the right to wear the coveted crimson beret, this is just one of the trials that must be passed with flying colors. They also have to shoot accurately, storm buildings quickly and demonstrate outstanding combat skills. Throughout the grueling ordeal, the hardest challenge is to overcome themselves.
