For more than six weeks, nine countries led by Saudi Arabia have been carrying out airstrikes on Yemen, the Arab world's poorest nation. Whole neighborhoods have been destroyed and communities reduced to rubble.
According to the United Nations, the strikes, targeting Iranian-backed Houthi rebel positions in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, have killed over 1,400 people, many of them civilians.
With international media unable to enter the besieged capital, Yousef Mawry, a local journalist, recorded the devastation of his home city for VICE News. He meets the survivors and victims, getting the inside view of life in Yemen.

With access to previously secret Yemeni defence ministry documents and testimony, Al Jazeera World investigates how the way was paved for the Houthis to take the city of Amran on their progress towards the capital Sanaa. It asks whether the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and his defence ministry were involved.
The Road to Sanaa tells the story of an alleged conspiracy by the Yemeni government against the apparently loyal army officer, Brigadier General Hamid al-Qushaibi and asks whether by appearing to collude with the Houthis, it unwittingly plotted its own downfall.
The Yemeni army fought a series of battles against the Houthis between 2004 and 2011 in which Qushaibi was key. He led the 310th Armoured Brigade based in the northern city of Amran, Qushaibi's hometown. As an army officer, he had been loyal to the governments of both former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and his successor, Hadi.
However, Qushaibi had supported the Youth Revolution in Yemen in 2011 and, by doing so, upset Saleh. He also arguably represented a threat to Hadi after Saleh was removed from power in February 2012.
The Houthis had started as a peaceful group aimed at reviving the Zaidi strain of Shia Islam, but developed into an armed militia under their founder Hussein Badr Eddin al-Houthi.
He was killed in 2004 and succeeded by his younger brother and current leader, Abdel-Malik al-Houthi. Under him, the Houthis began to move south from their stronghold in the northern province of Saada in June 2014. As they did so, Amran was the last bastion of government defence on their way south towards Sanaa, and the fall of Amran in unusual circumstances in July 2014, opened the way for the Houthis to move directly on to the capital.
The Road to Sanaa raises the question as to whether the government genuinely supported Qushaibi in his defence of Amran - or whether it effectively hung him out to dry, by allowing the Houthis to kill one of the men who'd openly supported the revolution against Saleh in 2011. It asks whether the Hadi government and its Ministry of Defence took a calculated risk by enabling the Houthis to defeat the 310th Armoured Brigade in Amran and kill Qushaibi.
Seven officers from Qushaibi's brigade, who do not want their identities revealed for security reasons, recount the events of that ill-fated battle. A senior Yemeni government official - who also wished to remain anonymous - subsequently confirmed their version of events in a phone call to the Al Jazeera team after the fall of both Amran and Sanaa.
"The government only gave Qushaibi verbal promises: We'll send you this. We will support you. These were just words, merely lies. He believed them, in good faith. Air strikes started but only warned the Houthis. Each time he attacked, the Houthis moved elsewhere," an army commander of the 310th Armoured Brigade tells Al Jazeera World.
According to testimonies in the film, supplies were cut off, requests to the government largely fell on deaf ears, and when backup troops arrived "they took off their uniforms and joined the Houthis".
What the president and the Ministry of Defence did not foresee was that, by doing so, they virtually opened the door for the Houthis to move on to Sanaa and take over the institutions of government in September 2014.

Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA) have won the 2014 Daylight Award (Tageslicht-Award) for the design of the Rolex Learning Center EPFL in Lausanne. With CHF 100,000 prize money the award is the highest architectural prize in Switzerland. It promotes buildings with an innovative use of daylight. In the run-up to the award presentation, VernissageTV had a closer look at the building in Lausanne and met with Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa in Paris, to learn more about the concept of the building. In this interview, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa talk about the ideas behind the building, the challenges they were facing, the importance of natural light in their work, and how their building is received by the users of the building.

The Daylight Award (Tageslicht-Award) is presented already for the fourth time by the Velux Stiftung in close collaboration with the Department of Architecture of ETH Zurich and the Swiss Council of Architecture. The Rolex Learning Center EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, is an extraordinary building in many ways, not least in regard to the use of natural light. Designed by Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), the building is conceived as one single space with openness and extensive use of natural light in mind. It houses a multimedia library, student workspaces, a multipurpose hall, a food court, a bookshop, a parking, among other facilities. It opened on February 22nd, 2010.
SANAA was founded in 1995 by Kazuyo Sejima (妹島 和世, born 1956) and Ryue Nishizawa (西沢立衛, born 1966). In 2004 they won the Golden Lion of the Venice Architecture Biennale for the most significant work, and in 2010, Sejima and Nishizawa were awarded the Pritzker Prize. Examples of SANAA's work include the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne; the Toledo Museum of Art's Glass Pavilion in Toledo, Ohio; the Serpentine Pavilion in London; the Christian Dior Building in Omotesando in Tokyo; the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa; and the Louvre-Lens Museum in France.

Just when you thought French Montana would never get over his seemingly One True Love Khloé Kardashian, Hollywood romance has found the Bronx rapper once again. Turns out, he's traded up from reality TV to full-time bona fide actress: he's dating Sanaa Lathan, star of classics like Love & Basketball, Brown Sugar and new box office hit The Perfect Guy. Sanaa more-or-less confirmed it on Big Boy's Neighborhood radio show this morning when, upon Big Boy's direct interrogation she coyly responds "I am dating" while doing nothing to dispel that French is the, ahem, perfect guy in question. It's only audio but you can basically hear her smiling through the non-direct answer. How beautiful that French has a new, gorgeous lady to pull up to La Marina with for the remainder of the summer. Sanaa sometimes spelled Sanaa or Sana'a) is the capital of Yemen and the centre of San'a' Governorate. San'a' is located at 15.354722° N 44.20667° E and has a population of 1,747,627 (2004 census).
San'a' lies in the heart of Yemeni highlands on a plateau at an altitude of 2200m surrounded by several mountains, notably Jabal Nuqum and Aiban. The city is around 320 km north of Aden.
San'a' is one of the ancient Yemeni cities dating back to the Sabaean dynasty of the 6th Century BC. The oldest written reference to its existence is found in inscriptions which date back to the 1st Century AD. It is suggested that San'a' was the capital of the Himyarite kingdom at the onset of the 6th Century AD.
When King Yousef Athar (or Dhu Nuwas), the last of the Himyarite kings, was in power, San'a' was also the capital of the Ethiopian viceroys, then after 570 of the Persians.
As of the dawn of Islam until the detachment of independent sub-states in many parts of Yemen Islamic Caliphate, San'a' persisted as the governing seat, who himself is Caliph's deputy in running the affairs of one of Yemen's Three Makhalifs: Mikhlaf San'a', Mikhlaf al-Janad and Mikhlaf Hadhramawt. The city of San'a' recurrently assumed an important status and all Yemenite States competed to control it.
The Mamelukes arrived in Yemen in AD 1517. Following the collapse of the Mamelukes in Egypt at the hands of the Ottoman Turks, Yemen fell under the Ottoman Rule and during the first Ottoman rule of Yemen between 1538-1635, San'a' became the capital of the Ottoman Vilayet and also during the Ottoman second rule 1872-1918. In 1918, San'a' was the capital of Imam Yahya, who ruled North Yemen. At the onset of the 1962 revolution which deposed the imamate rule, it became the capital of the Arab Republic of Yemen. It was then the capital of unified Yemen in 1990 where it is dubbed as the historical capital of Yemen.
The old, fortified city has been inhabited for more than 2500 years and contains a wealth of intact architectural gems. It was declared a World Heritage City by the United Nations in 1984. Efforts are underway to preserve some of the oldest buildings, some of which are over 400 years old. Surrounded by ancient clay walls which stand six to nine metres (20-30ft) high, the old city boasts over 100 mosques, 12 hammams (baths) and 6500 houses. Many of the houses look rather like ancient skyscrapers -- reaching several storeys high and topped with flat roofs, they are decorated with elaborate friezes and intricately carved windows.
One of the most popular attractions is Suq al-Milh (Salt Market), where it is possible to buy not only salt but also bread, spices, raisins, cotton, copper, pottery, silverware, antiques, and a host of other goods. The majestic seventh century al-Jami'a l-Kabir (The Great Mosque) is one of the oldest in the Muslim world. Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA) have won the 2014 Daylight Award (Tageslicht-Award) for the design of the Rolex Learning Center EPFL in Lausanne. With CHF 100,000 prize money the award is the highest architectural prize in Switzerland. It promotes buildings with an innovative use of daylight. In the run-up to the award presentation, VernissageTV had a closer look at the building in Lausanne and met with Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa in Paris, to learn more about the concept of the building. In this interview, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa talk about the ideas behind the building, the challenges they were facing, the importance of natural light in their work, and how their building is received by the users of the building. It houses a multimedia library, student workspaces, a multipurpose hall, a food court, a bookshop, a parking, among other facilities. It opened on February 22nd, 2010. SANAA was founded in 1995 by Kazuyo Sejima (妹島 和世, born 1956) and Ryue Nishizawa (西沢立衛, born 1966). In 2004 they won the Golden Lion of the Venice Architecture Biennale for the most significant work, and in 2010, Sejima and Nishizawa were awarded the Pritzker Prize. San'a' lies in the heart of Yemeni highlands on a plateau at an altitude of 2200m surrounded by several mountains, notably Jabal Nuqum and Aiban. The city is around 320 km north of Aden. San'a' is one of the ancient Yemeni cities dating back to the Sabaean dynasty of the 6th Century BC. The oldest written reference to its existence is found in inscriptions which date back to the 1st Century AD. It is suggested that San'a' was the capital of the Himyarite kingdom at the onset of the 6th Century AD. When King Yousef Athar (or Dhu Nuwas), the last of the Himyarite kings, was in power, San'a' was also the capital of the Ethiopian viceroys, then after 570 of the Persians. As of the dawn of Islam until the detachment of independent sub-states in many parts of Yemen Islamic Caliphate, San'a' persisted as the governing seat, who himself is Caliph's deputy in running the affairs of one of Yemen's Three Makhalifs: Mikhlaf San'a', Mikhlaf al-Janad and Mikhlaf Hadhramawt. The city of San'a' recurrently assumed an important status and all Yemenite States competed to control it. The Mamelukes arrived in Yemen in AD 1517. Following the collapse of the Mamelukes in Egypt at the hands of the Ottoman Turks, Yemen fell under the Ottoman Rule and during the first Ottoman rule of Yemen between 1538-1635, San'a' became the capital of the Ottoman Vilayet and also during the Ottoman second rule 1872-1918. In 1918, San'a' was the capital of Imam Yahya, who ruled North Yemen. At the onset of the 1962 revolution which deposed the imamate rule, it became the capital of the Arab Republic of Yemen. It was then the capital of unified Yemen in 1990 where it is dubbed as the historical capital of Yemen. The old, fortified city has been inhabited for more than 2500 years and contains a wealth of intact architectural gems. It was declared a World Heritage City by the United Nations in 1984. Efforts are underway to preserve some of the oldest buildings, some of which are over 400 years old. Surrounded by ancient clay walls which stand six to nine metres (20-30ft) high, the old city boasts over 100 mosques, 12 hammams (baths) and 6500 houses. Many of the houses look rather like ancient skyscrapers -- reaching several storeys high and topped with flat roofs, they are decorated with elaborate friezes and intricately carved windows. One of the most popular attractions is Suq al-Milh (Salt Market), where it is possible to buy not only salt but also bread, spices, raisins, cotton, copper, pottery, silverware, antiques, and a host of other goods. The majestic seventh century al-Jami'a l-Kabir (The Great Mosque) is one of the oldest in the Muslim world. For more than six weeks, nine countries led by Saudi Arabia have been carrying out airstrikes on Yemen, the Arab world's poorest nation. Whole neighborhoods have been destroyed and communities reduced to rubble.
According to the United Nations, the strikes, targeting Iranian-backed Houthi rebel positions in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, have killed over 1,400 people, many of them civilians.
With international media unable to enter the besieged capital, Yousef Mawry, a local journalist, recorded the devastation of his home city for VICE News. He meets the survivors and victims, getting the inside view of life in Yemen.

With access to previously secret Yemeni defence ministry documents and testimony, Al Jazeera World investigates how the way was paved for the Houthis to take the city of Amran on their progress towards the capital Sanaa. It asks whether the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and his defence ministry were involved.
The Road to Sanaa tells the story of an alleged conspiracy by the Yemeni government against the apparently loyal army officer, Brigadier General Hamid al-Qushaibi and asks whether by appearing to collude with the Houthis, it unwittingly plotted its own downfall.
The Yemeni army fought a series of battles against the Houthis between 2004 and 2011 in which Qushaibi was key. He led the 310th Armoured Brigade based in the northern city of Amran, Qushaibi's hometown. As an army officer, he had been loyal to the governments of both former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and his successor, Hadi.
However, Qushaibi had supported the Youth Revolution in Yemen in 2011 and, by doing so, upset Saleh. He also arguably represented a threat to Hadi after Saleh was removed from power in February 2012.
The Houthis had started as a peaceful group aimed at reviving the Zaidi strain of Shia Islam, but developed into an armed militia under their founder Hussein Badr Eddin al-Houthi.
He was killed in 2004 and succeeded by his younger brother and current leader, Abdel-Malik al-Houthi. Under him, the Houthis began to move south from their stronghold in the northern province of Saada in June 2014. As they did so, Amran was the last bastion of government defence on their way south towards Sanaa, and the fall of Amran in unusual circumstances in July 2014, opened the way for the Houthis to move directly on to the capital.
The Road to Sanaa raises the question as to whether the government genuinely supported Qushaibi in his defence of Amran - or whether it effectively hung him out to dry, by allowing the Houthis to kill one of the men who'd openly supported the revolution against Saleh in 2011. It asks whether the Hadi government and its Ministry of Defence took a calculated risk by enabling the Houthis to defeat the 310th Armoured Brigade in Amran and kill Qushaibi.
Seven officers from Qushaibi's brigade, who do not want their identities revealed for security reasons, recount the events of that ill-fated battle. A senior Yemeni government official - who also wished to remain anonymous - subsequently confirmed their version of events in a phone call to the Al Jazeera team after the fall of both Amran and Sanaa.
"The government only gave Qushaibi verbal promises: We'll send you this. We will support you. These were just words, merely lies. He believed them, in good faith. Air strikes started but only warned the Houthis. Each time he attacked, the Houthis moved elsewhere," an army commander of the 310th Armoured Brigade tells Al Jazeera World.
According to testimonies in the film, supplies were cut off, requests to the government largely fell on deaf ears, and when backup troops arrived "they took off their uniforms and joined the Houthis".
What the president and the Ministry of Defence did not foresee was that, by doing so, they virtually opened the door for the Houthis to move on to Sanaa and take over the institutions of government in September 2014.

The Road to Sanaa tells the story of an alleged conspiracy by the Yemeni government against the apparently loyal army officer, Brigadier General Hamid al-Qushaibi and asks whether by appearing to collude with the Houthis, it unwittingly plotted its own downfall.
The Yemeni army fought a series of battles against the Houthis between 2004 and 2011 in which Qushaibi was key. He led the 310th Armoured Brigade based in the northern city of Amran, Qushaibi's hometown. As an army officer, he had been loyal to the governments of both former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and his successor, Hadi.
However, Qushaibi had supported the Youth Revolution in Yemen in 2011 and, by doing so, upset Saleh. He also arguably represented a threat to Hadi after Saleh was removed from power in February 2012.
The Houthis had started as a peaceful group aimed at reviving the Zaidi strain of Shia Islam, but developed into an armed militia under their founder Hussein Badr Eddin al-Houthi.
He was killed in 2004 and succeeded by his younger brother and current leader, Abdel-Malik al-Houthi. Under him, the Houthis began to move south from their stronghold in the northern province of Saada in June 2014. As they did so, Amran was the last bastion of government defence on their way south towards Sanaa, and the fall of Amran in unusual circumstances in July 2014, opened the way for the Houthis to move directly on to the capital.
The Road to Sanaa raises the question as to whether the government genuinely supported Qushaibi in his defence of Amran - or whether it effectively hung him out to dry, by allowing the Houthis to kill one of the men who'd openly supported the revolution against Saleh in 2011. It asks whether the Hadi government and its Ministry of Defence took a calculated risk by enabling the Houthis to defeat the 310th Armoured Brigade in Amran and kill Qushaibi.
Seven officers from Qushaibi's brigade, who do not want their identities revealed for security reasons, recount the events of that ill-fated battle. A senior Yemeni government official - who also wished to remain anonymous - subsequently confirmed their version of events in a phone call to the Al Jazeera team after the fall of both Amran and Sanaa.
"The government only gave Qushaibi verbal promises: We'll send you this. We will support you. These were just words, merely lies. He believed them, in good faith. Air strikes started but only warned the Houthis. Each time he attacked, the Houthis moved elsewhere," an army commander of the 310th Armoured Brigade tells Al Jazeera World.
According to testimonies in the film, supplies were cut off, requests to the government largely fell on deaf ears, and when backup troops arrived "they took off their uniforms and joined the Houthis".
What the president and the Ministry of Defence did not foresee was that, by doing so, they virtually opened the door for the Houthis to move on to Sanaa and take over the institutions of government in September 2014.

Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA) have won the 2014 Daylight Award (Tageslicht-Award) for the design of the Rolex Learning Center EPFL in Lausanne. With CHF 100,000 prize money the award is the highest architectural prize in Switzerland. It promotes buildings with an innovative use of daylight. In the run-up to the award presentation, VernissageTV had a closer look at the building in Lausanne and met with Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa in Paris, to learn more about the concept of the building. In this interview, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa talk about the ideas behind the building, the challenges they were facing, the importance of natural light in their work, and how their building is received by the users of the building.

Sanaa sometimes spelled Sanaa or Sana'a) is the capital of Yemen and the centre of San'a' Governorate. San'a' is located at 15.354722° N 44.20667° E and has a population of 1,747,627 (2004 census).
San'a' lies in the heart of Yemeni highlands on a plateau at an altitude of 2200m surrounded by several mountains, notably Jabal Nuqum and Aiban. The city is around 320 km north of Aden.
San'a' is one of the ancient Yemeni cities dating back to the Sabaean dynasty of the 6th Century BC. The oldest written reference to its existence is found in inscriptions which date back to the 1st Century AD. It is suggested that San'a' was the capital of the Himyarite kingdom at the onset of the 6th Century AD.
When King Yousef Athar (or Dhu Nuwas), the last of the Himyarite kings, was in power, San'a' was also the capital of the Ethiopian viceroys, then after 570 of the Persians.
As of the dawn of Islam until the detachment of independent sub-states in many parts of Yemen Islamic Caliphate, San'a' persisted as the governing seat, who himself is Caliph's deputy in running the affairs of one of Yemen's Three Makhalifs: Mikhlaf San'a', Mikhlaf al-Janad and Mikhlaf Hadhramawt. The city of San'a' recurrently assumed an important status and all Yemenite States competed to control it.
The Mamelukes arrived in Yemen in AD 1517. Following the collapse of the Mamelukes in Egypt at the hands of the Ottoman Turks, Yemen fell under the Ottoman Rule and during the first Ottoman rule of Yemen between 1538-1635, San'a' became the capital of the Ottoman Vilayet and also during the Ottoman second rule 1872-1918. In 1918, San'a' was the capital of Imam Yahya, who ruled North Yemen. At the onset of the 1962 revolution which deposed the imamate rule, it became the capital of the Arab Republic of Yemen. It was then the capital of unified Yemen in 1990 where it is dubbed as the historical capital of Yemen.
The old, fortified city has been inhabited for more than 2500 years and contains a wealth of intact architectural gems. It was declared a World Heritage City by the United Nations in 1984. Efforts are underway to preserve some of the oldest buildings, some of which are over 400 years old. Surrounded by ancient clay walls which stand six to nine metres (20-30ft) high, the old city boasts over 100 mosques, 12 hammams (baths) and 6500 houses. Many of the houses look rather like ancient skyscrapers -- reaching several storeys high and topped with flat roofs, they are decorated with elaborate friezes and intricately carved windows.
One of the most popular attractions is Suq al-Milh (Salt Market), where it is possible to buy not only salt but also bread, spices, raisins, cotton, copper, pottery, silverware, antiques, and a host of other goods. The majestic seventh century al-Jami'a l-Kabir (The Great Mosque) is one of the oldest in the Muslim world. Their groundbreaking work includes the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, the Serpentine Pavilion in London, the Christian Dior Building in Tokyo, the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Toledo Museum of Art's Glass Pavilion. They won the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2010 and the Berlin Academy of Arts Kunstpreis in 2007. Nishizawa holds a professorship at Yokohama National University and has maintained his own independent design office since 1997.
