Since the coup against the elected Yanukovich government in Ukraine on February 22, 2014, an international crisis has been brewing -- involving the U.S., E.U., and Russia, and closely linked to the expansion of NATO since the 90s. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created by the U.S. and Western European nations to militarily counter the Soviet Union. However, after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, NATO was not disbanded but was significantly enlarged.
At a meeting on January 10, 2015 two speakers, authorities well equipped to explore this subject, discussed the background causes of the Ukraine troubles (now drawing the U.S. and Russia closer to possible military confrontation). Speaking were Dr. John J. Mearsheimer, co-director of Program on International Security Policy at University of Chicago; and Rick Rozoff, manager of the Stop NATO website.
Dr. Mearsheimer spoke of the real reason of the crisis: "We are interested in peeling away Ukraine and Georgia from Russia's orbit and making [them] bulwarks of the West, right on Putin's doorstep." Mearsheimer goes on to remind us how sensitive big powers are to that kind of thing with the way the U.S. reacted to the prospect of Soviet missiles in Cuba in 1962. American foreign policy, rightly or wrongly, was obsessed with upholding the Monroe Doctrine declaring U.S. hegemony in the Western Hemisphere.
Dr. Mearsheimer and Rick Rozoff fleshed out the three parts to the West's strategy vis-a-vis Russia and its immediate neighborhood in Eastern Europe: 1) NATO Expansion, 2) European Union Expansion, 3) Promote Democracy (meaning putting in power leaders who are pro-Western and anti-Russian).
Rozoff provided the background narrative to the steady march of NATO expansion since the 90s. In 1999 NATO held its 50th anniversary summit in Washington, D.C., while at the same time conducting its first war (to break up Yugoslavia, the first war in Europe since WWII). NATO then went on to conduct wars in three continents. Now, US-controlled NATO has 28 full members and 39 partner countries, nearly half of the nations in the UN.
The April, 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest was followed then by a war between Georgia and Russia in August, 2008, precipitated by plans to make Georgia part of NATO.
"It's clear," Rozoff noted, "that policy makers in the United States and also their NATO allies in Europe were envisioning some sort of continental system in Europe...There's not a single European nation...that has not either been a full member of NATO or a member of the Partnership for Peace program and in many instances several intermediate programs...So what we're talking about is the entirety of Europe being subordinated to a military bloc controlled from the other side of the Atlantic, and nothing less."
Both speakers underlined the sobering implications of NATO expansion. Rozoff ended his talk by saying, "I should let you know that both of us panelists objected to the original title that was proposed for this talk which included words to the effect of 'nuclear war' or something. However I woke up this morning to see that someone not noted for ever having being tremendously confrontational with the West, former Soviet President Michael Gorbachev, talk about just that prospect".

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has criticized the expansion of NATO eastward, saying the West made a mistake by forming a global missile system.
Putin says following the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the then-NATO secretary general announced that the Western alliance would not expand its reach. But American and European officials acted exactly vice versa. According to the Russian president, NATO always claimed that its missile deployment in Eastern Europe is to address the so-called Iranian nuclear threat. However, even the nuclear deal with Iran could not stop NATO’s anti-ballistic missile system from developing further and the body has signed bilateral agreements with Turkey, Poland, and Spain. Putin added that NATO has already installed radars in Turkey and created a missile positioning area in Romania, all against Russia.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO (
/ˈneɪtoʊ/ NAY-toh; French: Organisation du traité de l'Atlantique Nord (OTAN)), also called the (North) Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949. The organization constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party. NATO's headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium, one of the 28 member states across North America and Europe, the newest of which, Albania and Croatia, joined in April 2009. An additional 22 countries participate in NATO's Partnership for Peace, with 15 other countries involved in institutionalized dialogue programs. The combined military spending of all NATO members constitutes over 70% of the world's defence spending.
For its first few years, NATO was not much more than a political association. However, the Korean War galvanized the member states, and an integrated military structure was built up under the direction of two U.S. supreme commanders. The course of the Cold War led to a rivalry with nations of the Warsaw Pact, which formed in 1955. The first NATO Secretary General, Lord Ismay, stated in 1949 that the organization's goal was "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down." Doubts over the strength of the relationship between the European states and the United States ebbed and flowed, along with doubts over the credibility of the NATO defence against a prospective Soviet invasion—doubts that led to the development of the independent French nuclear deterrent and the withdrawal of the French from NATO's military structure in 1966.

Putin slams NATO's expansion eastward
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has criticized the expansion of NATO eastward, saying the West made a mistake by forming a global missile system. Putin says following the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the then-NATO secretary general announced that the Western alliance would not expand its reach. At a meeting on January 10, 2015 two speakers, authorities well equipped to explore this subject, discussed the background causes of the Ukraine troubles (now drawing the U.S. and Russia closer to possible military confrontation). Speaking were Dr. John J. Mearsheimer, co-director of Program on International Security Policy at University of Chicago; and Rick Rozoff, manager of the Stop NATO website.
Dr. Mearsheimer spoke of the real reason of the crisis: "We are interested in peeling away Ukraine and Georgia from Russia's orbit and making [them] bulwarks of the West, right on Putin's doorstep." Mearsheimer goes on to remind us how sensitive big powers are to that kind of thing with the way the U.S. reacted to the prospect of Soviet missiles in Cuba in 1962. American foreign policy, rightly or wrongly, was obsessed with upholding the Monroe Doctrine declaring U.S. hegemony in the Western Hemisphere.
Dr. Mearsheimer and Rick Rozoff fleshed out the three parts to the West's strategy vis-a-vis Russia and its immediate neighborhood in Eastern Europe: 1) NATO Expansion, 2) European Union Expansion, 3) Promote Democracy (meaning putting in power leaders who are pro-Western and anti-Russian).
Rozoff provided the background narrative to the steady march of NATO expansion since the 90s. In 1999 NATO held its 50th anniversary summit in Washington, D.C., while at the same time conducting its first war (to break up Yugoslavia, the first war in Europe since WWII). NATO then went on to conduct wars in three continents. Now, US-controlled NATO has 28 full members and 39 partner countries, nearly half of the nations in the UN.
The April, 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest was followed then by a war between Georgia and Russia in August, 2008, precipitated by plans to make Georgia part of NATO.
"It's clear," Rozoff noted, "that policy makers in the United States and also their NATO allies in Europe were envisioning some sort of continental system in Europe...There's not a single European nation...that has not either been a full member of NATO or a member of the Partnership for Peace program and in many instances several intermediate programs...So what we're talking about is the entirety of Europe being subordinated to a military bloc controlled from the other side of the Atlantic, and nothing less."
Both speakers underlined the sobering implications of NATO expansion. Rozoff ended his talk by saying, "I should let you know that both of us panelists objected to the original title that was proposed for this talk which included words to the effect of 'nuclear war' or something. However I woke up this morning to see that someone not noted for ever having being tremendously confrontational with the West, former Soviet President Michael Gorbachev, talk about just that prospect".

Since the coup against the elected Yanukovich government in Ukraine on February 22, 2014, an international crisis has been brewing -- involving the U.S., E.U., and Russia, and closely linked to the expansion of NATO since the 90s. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created by the U.S. and Western European nations to militarily counter the Soviet Union. However, after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, NATO was not disbanded but was significantly enlarged.
At a meeting on January 10, 2015 two speakers, authorities well equipped to explore this subject, discussed the background causes of the Ukraine troubles (now drawing the U.S. and Russia closer to possible military confrontation). Speaking were Dr. John J. Mearsheimer, co-director of Program on International Security Policy at University of Chicago; and Rick Rozoff, manager of the Stop NATO website.
Dr. Mearsheimer spoke of the real reason of the crisis: "We are interested in peeling away Ukraine and Georgia from Russia's orbit and making [them] bulwarks of the West, right on Putin's doorstep." Mearsheimer goes on to remind us how sensitive big powers are to that kind of thing with the way the U.S. reacted to the prospect of Soviet missiles in Cuba in 1962. Putin says following the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the then-NATO secretary general announced that the Western alliance would not expand its reach. But American and European officials acted exactly vice versa. According to the Russian president, NATO always claimed that its missile deployment in Eastern Europe is to address the so-called Iranian nuclear threat. However, even the nuclear deal with Iran could not stop NATO’s anti-ballistic missile system from developing further and the body has signed bilateral agreements with Turkey, Poland, and Spain. Putin added that NATO has already installed radars in Turkey and created a missile positioning area in Romania, all against Russia.

Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev on Tuesday (15/4) cautioned the US Congress against the planned expansion of NATO. He claimed that it would be a mistake to expand the alliance without an agreement not to deploy nuclear weapons and combat troops in new member countries.
Gorbachev told Congress that the inclusion in NATO of former
Soviet bloc nations Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic could
strengthen conservative sentiment in Russia.
Without naming China, he said a new power was emerging in the
Pacific that needs to be balanced by the US and by a Europe that
includes Russia.
He said he was not convinced by assurances that Russia had
nothing to fear from NATO expansion. In the post-Cold War era,
he said, NATO should not treat Russia as the victorious allies
severely restrained Germany after World War I.
Gorbachev now heads an environmental protection foundation.

We believe that NATO is obsessed with looking for an enemy and this is selfish, a chance to score points by demonising certain countries. As a result, we are no longer able to work together constructively. All we have instead is sabre-rattling and sanctions. Declaring to be fighting for human values and launching so-called peacekeeping operations, this indicates that we are still stuck in bloc mentality instead of respecting other countries' sovereignty and developing equal dialogue, we still see confrontation."

The newly revised Russian Navy’s doctrine says the black sea fleet in the Crimean peninsula will receive reinforcements as well as infrastructure improvements. The text also gives extra weight to Russia’s naval presence in the Atlantic. Kremlin’s deputy premier says Russia’s attention toward the region is justified by NATO's eastward expansion. A country in transition, hellbent on shedding its stalwart old-Soviet image, the Latvia of today is vibrant, enigmatic and altogether mesmerising. Refreshingly unpretentious, Latvia manages to tantalise even the most jaded traveller. Many arrive expecting little and leave overwhelmed, certain they've uncovered long-buried treasure.
Latvian amber was known in places as far away as Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In the 12th century, German traders arrived, bringing with them missionaries who attempted to convert the pagan Finno-Ugric and Baltic tribes to the Christian faith. The Germans founded Rīga in 1201, establishing it as the largest and most powerful city on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. After independence in 1918, Latvia achieved considerable results in social development, economy, industry and agriculture. It has always been a multicultural melting point, where foreigners and locals worked together and brought prosperity to the country. On June 16, 1940, Vyacheslav Molotov presented the Latvian representative in Moscow with an ultimatum accusing Latvia of violations of that pact, and on June 17 Soviet forces occupied the country. Elections for a "People's Saeima" were held, and a puppet government headed by Augusts Kirhenšteins led Latvia into the USSR. The annexation was formalized on August 5, 1940. During the time of the Iron Curtain, Latvia was a province of the Soviet Union, but the concentration of heavy industry was enormous. Contacts with the West were regulated. The Baltic region had the reputation of being the most urbanized and having the highest literacy rate in the Soviet Union. Latvia gained independence on September 6, 1991. Between 1991 and 2007 the country saw unprecedented economic growth. However, the global recession and the banking crisis hit Latvia brutally, and severe economic contraction and destructively high unemployment have returned.
Because of a tribal past and divisions between occupying nations, there are regional differences between parts of Latvia which are interesting to explore.

He received a BA degree summa cum laude in English and Italian from Princeton University in 1966. While a student at Princeton he became a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and was a Fulbright Scholar at University of Turin in Italy. Tarpley also obtained a MA degree in humanities from Skidmore College, as well as a PhD from the Catholic University of America in History.
As a European based journalist in the 1980s, Tarpley wrote a study on the assassination of Prime Minister Aldo Moro. The study claimed that the murder was a false flag operation orchestrated by Propaganda Due (a Masonic Lodge) with the cooperation of senior members of the Italian government secret services that was blamed on the Red Brigades.
As an activist historian he first became widely known for his book George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography (1992), a masterpiece of research which is still a must read.
During 2008, he warned of the dangers of an Obama presidency controlled by Wall Street with Obama: The Postmodern Coup, The Making of a Manchurian Candidate and Barack H. Obama: The Unauthorized Biography. His interest in economics is reflected in Surviving the Cataclysm: Your Guide Through the Worst Financial Crisis in Human History Against Oligarchy. He is currently completing a study of Pearl Harbor as an episode in Wall Street's war against President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the New Deal, and FDR's economic bill of rights. His books have appeared in Japanese, German, Italian, French, and Spanish

popular destination for tourists.
Visit Malta's Own Blue Grotto
Blue Grotto namely Blue Cave, the most famous can be found on the Island of Capri but we can find similar ones on nearly every coast or island. All you need is a rocky cave or arch way and the sunshine reflecting from the sea bottom covering the water to different shades of green or blue depending on how deep the water is. This national site provides a living for some clever boat man all over the world from Thailand to Corfu. The mountainous Blue Cave is especially nice and the small harbor from where the boats are departing is singularly pleasant.
Besides the cave, we can also admire two other formations similar to fjords. These are the Wied Babu and the Wied iz-Zurrieq. Wied means the same in Maltese language as wadi in Arabic language namely river valley or channel. The Blue Grotto is a 15 meter long stalactite cave with some coral, although these are not so colorful as the tropical ones. The most amazing spectacle is in the morning hours but each part of the day has its specialty. The cliff cropping abruptly to the water is broken by countless caves and hollows.
In the distance of six kilometers, we can see the inhabited Island of Filfla. The island was used by NATO for a long time and even nowadays cannot be visited. On summer weekends, dozens of local children enjoy the water and sunshine here. The traditionally painted boats, the shining sun, the general noise of the beaches and the salty smell of the sea together make our time spent here into a special experience.
Close to the Blue Cave there's a temple group which consists of three individual cultic places that later were surrounded by a common wall. This is an archaic world with a mysterious symbol. It was built 3000 to 4000 years Before Christ and the big question is the same here as with the Egyptian Pyramids. How could people move those almost 20 ton rocks? According to the Science findings those huge stone tables were altars and served for presenting victims just like Stone Henge, Higer Quinn also provides evidence that the beginning of human civilization is older than we imagine. The nearby Manatr is a similar megalithic Church which has been closed to visitors owing to repeated vandalism.
Malta was the first European territory to adapt Christianity and mainly due to the journeys 300 year reign the inhabitants are still very religious. In addition, the love of holidays is very common here. On Saint Peter's and Saint Paul's days the local church blesses the animals. Everyone comes with his own animal like lambs, goats or horses or even house pets like cats or dogs. A red mark is painted on the blessed animals. These festivals are not only holidays or spectacles but also big events in the Maltese community life and there are about basket garden, the pavilions, music fans and several programs give a real picnic feeling.
The highest point of the island is the 253 meter high Ta' Dmejrek. Here was the small Magdalena Chapel from which we can overlook to an amazing view. Wonder is the giddy Dingli precipice opposite in the sea is the Island of Filfla.
