Daegu (Korean: [tɛɡu]), (대구, 大邱, literally 'large hill') formerly spelled Taegu, and officially known as the Daegu Metropolitan City, is a city in South Korea, the fourth largest after Seoul, Busan, and Incheon, and the third largest metropolitan area in the nation with over 2.5 million residents. Daegu is the capital and principal city of the surrounding Gyeongsangbuk-do province, although it is not legally part of it. The two areas combined are often referred to as Daegu-Gyeongbuk, with a total population of over 5 million.
Daegu is located in south-eastern Korea about 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the seacoast, near the Geumho River and its mainstream, Nakdong River in Gyeongsang-do. The Daegu basin, where the city lies, is the central plain of the Yeongnam region. In ancient times, there was a proto-country named Jinhan, to which the current Daegu area belonged. Later Daegu was part of the Silla Kingdom which unified the Korean Peninsula. During the Joseon Dynasty period, the city was the capital of Gyeongsang-do which was one of the traditional eight provinces of the country.
Jung District, Jung-Gu(Hangul: 중구; hanja: 中區), or "Central District," is the name of a gu (District) in several South Korea cities:
Jung District (Jung-gu) is a gu, or district, covering the downtown area of Daegu, South Korea. It borders most of the other districts of Daegu, including Nam-gu to the south, Seo-gu to the west, Buk-gu to the north, and Dong-gu and Suseong-gu to the east. The northern border is formed by the Gyeongbu Line railroad, and the eastern border by the Sincheon stream.
Jung-gu is at the nexus of Daegu Subway Line 1 and Daegu Subway Line 2. Daegu Subway Line 3 will also pass through the district when it is completed.
Much of Jung-gu once lay within the old confines of Daegu Castle, which at one time comprised the entire town of Daegu. A small part of the castle wall is preserved in Dalseong Park. Many historical incidents in the history of Daegu took place in the district, including the recent Daegu subway fire and the February 28th movement calling for the end of the autocratic Rhee regime in 1960. The district was formally established in 1963, with the introduction of the gu system.

Being one of the largest cities in South Korea, we took the time to revisit the city's history by walking through Jung-gu Modern Cultural Street. Towards the end of 2014, I was offered an opportunity by Daegu Tourism to travel around Daegu. Daegu is a city in South Korea, the fourth largest after Seoul, Busan, and Incheon, and is the third largest metropolitan area in the nation with over 2.5 million residents. I love travelling to countries that offer both equal amount of sight seeing within the city and also the country side, which is why Daegu was perfect for me. Not only that, personally Daegu is just like Seoul but it's less congested. The people here are generally nice too! Even the girls are cuter! ♥ This is tips for using Sky train (subway) in Daegu, Korea. Daegu's 1st & 2nd lines are Subway and 3rd line is only Sky train. Riding 3rd line Sky train feels like you are in train at amusement park. If you plan to visti Daegu in Korean, highly recommend you to ride it! And before you use the vending machine, do not forget to prepare your cash. The machine ONLY takes CASH! Every cities subway system are little different. For example, Seoul subway system takes deposit to buy ticket which is refundable. :) Thankx ♥ * Music * "Chee Zee Beach" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
