Joseon (Korean: 조선; Hanja: 朝鮮; also Chosŏn, Choson, Chosun, Cho-sen), was a Korean state founded by Taejo Yi Seong-gye that lasted for approximately five centuries, from July 1392 to October 1897. It was founded following the aftermath of the overthrow of the Goryeo Dynasty in what is today the city of Kaesong. Early on, Korea was retitled and the capital was relocated to modern-day Seoul. The kingdom's northernmost borders were expanded to the natural boundaries at the Amnok and Duman rivers through the subjugation of the Jurchens. Joseon was the last dynasty of Korean history and the longest-ruling Confucian dynasty.

A discovery of rare photographs taken in Korea during the late 19th and early 20th century has revealed never-before-seen images of key figures in Korea′s history. Our Yim Yoonhee joins us today with more on this story. Last year, a huge collection of pictures taken during Korea′s modern history were found by a Korean professor at Rutgers University in the state of New Jersey. They were discovered in the William Elliot Griffis Collection and, of the 592 photographs found, hundreds had never been seen by the public before, including the ones you′re about to look at. The fifth son of Korea′s Emperor Gwangmu, Prince Yi Kang, lived during a tumultuous time in Korean history, during the First Sino-Japanese War. This recently discovered shot is one of the earliest pictures of the prince, taken in 1899 when he left to study abroad in the United States. Another photograph is of Heungseon Daewongun , known to some Westerners as Prince Gung. He served as regent of the Joseon Dynasty while King Gojong was a minor during the 1860s. The picture on the right, believed to be of him in his 40s, shows a much younger version of him. Seo Jae-pil, also known as Philip Jaisohn, was a leader in Korea′s fight for independence, even putting together the doomed Gapsin Coup to oust the Joseon-era leadership. He was the first Korean to receive U.S. citizenship and this new picture on the left shows a young 23-year-old Seo, taken in 1887. Another leader of the failed Gapsin Coup was Park Yeoung-ho. This rare image of the Korean politician at 25, before his involvement with the enlightenment movement of Korea. And lastly, Kim Ok-gyun, a reformist during the late Joseon Dynasty. The image on the left shows him at 35 years old, and though there are many black-and-white photos of him, this is the first known color photograph of Kim. And while these pictures reveal a small piece of Korea′s history, musician Hwang Byung-ki holds on to history in his own way. For decades, he′s been a master of the gayageum, one of Korea′s most popular traditional Korean instruments. And now, a new book about Hwang, compiled by English scholar Andrew Killick over 25 years, has recently been published in Korean. This is a book that was first written in English, and as you were telling me earlier, it was translated into Korean because of the importance of the content. That′s right. Hwang Byung-ki is a very important composer and musician here in the country. And this is the first book in English to cover an Asian composer who writes music for Asian instruments. Now, for those of you who don′t know, the gayageum is a 12-stringed zither that′s plucked. But the history of the instrument dates all the way back to the 6th century, where it was an important part of Korean culture, and now it′s still played by musicians of all ages, despite the growing trend towards Western instruments. Gojoseon (Hangul: 고조선; Hanja: 古朝鮮, Korean pronunciation: [kodʑosʌn]) was an ancient Korean kingdom. Go (고, 古), meaning "ancient," distinguishes it from the later Joseon Dynasty; Joseon, as it is called in contemporaneous writings, is also romanized as Chosŏn. According to the Samguk Yusa and other medieval-era records, Gojoseon is said to have been founded in 2333 BC by Dangun, who is said to be a Posterity of Heaven. Archaeological evidence of a Gojoseon-era civilization is found in the transition from the Jeulmun pottery to the Mumun pottery around 1500 BC, when groups of semi-sedentary small-scale agriculturalists occupied most of the Korean Peninsula. Local bronze production began around the 8th century BC. Based on contemporaneous written records, modern historians generally believe it developed from a loose federation into a kingdom between the 8th and 4th centuries BC. During its early phase, the capital of Gojoseon was supposedly located in Liaoning; around 400 BC, this was moved to Pyongyang, while in the south of the peninsula, the Jin state arose by the 3rd century BC. Gojoseon was collapsed by Han Dynasty of China during the Gojoseon--Han War in 108 BC, and this led to emergence of small states, which said Proto--Three Kingdoms period in Korean history. The people of Gojoseon are referred to in Chinese records as Dongyi ("eastern barbarians"). Their linguistic affiliation is uncertain. Their language was probably a predecessor of the equally prehistoric Buyeo languages, and perhaps a form of Proto-Korean. ※ Yemaek (Korean pronunciation: [jemɛk̚]) were an ethnic group who dwelt in Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula. They had ancestral ties to various Korean kingdoms including Gojoseon, Gori (고리; 藁離), Buyeo, Goguryeo, Baekje, Okjeo, Dongye, Yangmaek (양맥; 梁貊) and Sosumaek (소수맥; 小水貊), and is believed to be one of the ancient tribes that were formed into the Koreans. Ye-Maek, also known as Yemaek and Maek, is an unclassified and arguably unattested language of Manchuria and eastern Korea north of Silla in the last few centuries BCE. The Yemaek people had historical ties to later Korean kingdoms and may have been ancestral to several, such as Gojoseon; the Ye of Yemaek are reported to have been a synonym for Buyeo, and the Maek for Goguryeo. Their language may have been one of, or ancestral to, the Buyeo languages. Evidence for the language is limited to toponyms, and its existence is questionable. Joseon (July 1392--1909) (also Chosŏn, Choson, Chosun), was a Korean sovereign state[3] founded by Taejo Yi Seong-gye that lasted for approximately five centuries. It was founded in the aftermath of the overthrow of the Goryeo Kingdom at what is today the city of Kaesong. Early on, Korea was retitled and the capital was relocated to modern-day Seoul and the kingdom's northernmost borders were expanded to the natural boundaries at the Amnok and Duman rivers (through the subjugation of the Jurchens). Joseon was the last royal and later imperial dynasty of Korean history. It was the longest ruling Confucian dynasty. In the 19th century tensions mounted between Qing China and Japan, culminating in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894--1895). Much of this war was fought on the Korean peninsula. Japan, after the Meiji Restoration, acquired Western military technology, had forced Joseon to sign the Treaty of Ganghwa in 1876. Port Hamilton was occupied by Britsh Navy in 1885. Many Koreans despised Japanese and foreign influences over their land and the corrupt oppressive rule of the Joseon Dynasty. On January 11, 1894, by peasant leader Jeon Bong-jun defeated the government forces at the battle of Go-bu, after the battle Jo's properties were handed out to the peasants. Meantime, the Joseon government army attacked Jeonju and both the Joseon government and the peasant army concluded an agreement. However the urgent Joseon government asked the Chinese Qing Dynasty government for assistance in ending the revolt. After notifying the Japanese in accordance with the Convention of Tientsin Qing sent troops into Korea. It was the catalyst for the First Sino-Japanese War. The Empress Myeongseong[14] had attempted to counter Japanese interference in Korea and was considering turning to Russia or China for support. In 1895, Empress Myeongseong (referred to as "Queen Min"[14]) was directly assassinated by Japanese agents.[15][15] The Japanese minister to Korea, Miura Goro orchestrated the plot against her. A group of Japanese agents along with Hullyeondae Army[15] entered the Royal palace in Seoul, which was under Japanese[15] and Empress Myeongseong was killed and her body desecrated in the North wing of the palace. The Chinese defeat in the 1894 war led to the Treaty of Shimonoseki between China and Japan, which officially guaranteed Korea's independence from China. It was a step for Japan to hold regional hegemony in Korea. The Joseon court, pressured by encroachment from larger powers, felt the need to reinforce national integrity and declared the Korean Empire in 1897. Emperor Gojong assumed the title of Emperor in order to assert Korea's independence. In addition, other foreign powers were sought for military technology, especially Russia, to fend off the Japanese. Technically, 1897 marks the end of the Joseon period, as the official name of the empire was changed; however the Joseon Dynasty would still reign, albeit perturbed by Japan and Russia. In a complicated series of manoeuvres and counter-manoeuvres, Japan pushed back the Russian fleet at the Battle of Port Arthur in 1905. With the conclusion of the 1904--1905 Russo-Japanese War with the Treaty of Portsmouth, the way was open for Japan to take control of Korea. After the signing of the Protectorate Treaty in 1905, Korea became a protectorate of Japan. Itō Hirobumi was the first Resident-General of Korea, although he was assassinated by Korean independence activist An Jung-geun in 1909 at the train station at Harbin. In 1910, although many Koreans opposed the annexation, the Japanese Empire annexed Korea by force.

서오릉(西五陵)은 경기도 고양시 덕양구 신도동 에 있는 조선시대 5개를 합한 능호(陵號)이다. 세계문화유산으로 등재된 이조왕능 중 서울 서쪽에 5개의 왕과 왕비 그 형제의 무덤이 있다. 경릉(敬陵)은 덕종과 소혜왕후릉, 창릉(昌陵)은 예종과 안순왕후릉, 명릉(明陵)은 숙종과 인현왕후, 인원왕후릉, 익릉(翼陵)은 인경왕후릉, , 홍릉(弘陵)은 정성왕후의 릉이다. 그 외에 장희빈인 대빈묘, 순회세자 순창원 등이 묻혀있다.
