The Pathfinder that Saved Mark Watney
In Andy Weir's "The Martian," astronaut Mark Watney uses Pathfinder to talk to Earth. Here's the lander's real story. Pathfinder landed on Mars in 1997 to prove that NASA had the technological know-how to being the true exploration of our neighbouring planet. The lander, which carried the small Sojourner rover inside one of its petals, determined Mars was once warm and wet, and also surveyed the p

From Wiki : Spirit, MER-A (Mars Exploration Rover -- A), is a robotic rover on Mars, active from 2004 to 2010. It was one of two rovers of NASA's ongoing Mars Exploration Rover Mission. It landed successfully on Mars at 04:35 Ground UTC on January 4, 2004, three weeks before its twin, Opportunity (MER-B), landed on the other side of the planet. Its name was chosen through a NASA-sponsored student essay competition. The rover became stuck in late 2009, and its last communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010.
The rover completed its planned 90-sol mission. Aided by cleaning events that resulted in higher power from its solar panels, Spirit went on to function effectively over twenty times longer than NASA planners expected following mission completion. Spirit also logged 7.73 km (4.8 mi) of driving instead of the planned 600 m (0.4 mi), allowing more extensive geological analysis of Martian rocks and planetary surface features. Initial scientific results from the first phase of the mission (the 90-sol prime mission) were published in a special issue of the journal Science.
On May 1, 2009 (5 years, 3 months, 27 Earth days after landing; 21.6 times the planned mission duration), Spirit became stuck in soft soil. This was not the first of the mission's "embedding events" and for the following eight months NASA carefully analyzed the situation, running Earth-based theoretical and practical simulations, and finally programming the rover to make extrication drives in an attempt to free itself. These efforts continued until January 26, 2010 when NASA officials announced that the rover was likely irrecoverably obstructed by its location in soft soil, though it continued to perform scientific research from its current location.
The rover continued in a stationary science platform role until communication with Spirit stopped on sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). JPL continued to attempt to regain contact until May 24, 2011, when NASA announced that efforts to communicate with the unresponsive rover had ended. A formal farewell was planned at NASA headquarters after the Memorial Day holiday and was televised on NASA TV.
Hope you enjoyed it!

Next we reproduce Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Pathfinder.
So Kerbal Space Program went 1.0 this week and my wish has come true with the addition of stock nose cones so I didn't have to spend all evening making them this time. At some point I will update my other Mars Mission crafts but for now let's continue with Part 6
Mars Global Surveyor is the first craft that relies on aerobraking to circularize its orbit. I had noticed that I couldn't retract the solar panels so left the upper stage attached and used it to achieve Duna orbit. Then after testing that it was ok I finalised the orbit using aerobraking but the upper stage could have been detached before even leaving Kerbin as there were no issues.
Aside from being the first Mars mission that I personally saw happening live on TV Mars Pathfinder was the first Rover to visit Mars. It is one of my favorite missions ever devised.
Both of these craft are launched with the Delta II Rocket. This was fun to make as it used 9 solid rocket boosters 9 not being a usual number in Kerbal Space program so keeping it symmetrical was a challenge but I think the outcome of it is pretty rad.
Even though I tried to make it as basic as possible Mars Pathfinder is still over sized and so required an extra stage to obtain orbit, I hope no one minds too much.
Thanks to everyone who has watched this series so far, please leave as many comments as you dare :)

USA/MARS: PATHFINDER ROVER CONTINUES MARTIAN TOUR
English/Nat
Mars Pathfinder's rover has continued to tour Martian soil - analysing soil, rocks and atmosphere - and the results are surprising
Early chemical analysis of a stone by the geologist robot indicates it may be similar to volcanic rocks found on Earth.
"Barnacle Bill", the Martian rock analysed on Monday by Mars Pathfinder's rover may be surprisingly different than first thought.

"Mars Pathfinder" is an American robotic spacecraft that landed a base station with a roving probe on Mars in 1997. It consisted of a lander, renamed the "Carl Sagan Memorial Station", and a lightweight wheeled robotic Mars rover named "Sojourner".
Launched on December 4, 1996 by NASA aboard a Delta II booster a month after the Mars Global Surveyor was launched, it landed on July 4, 1997 on Mars's Ares Vallis, in a region called Chryse Planitia in the Oxia Palus quadrangle. The lander then opened, exposing the rover which conducted many experiments on the Martian surface.
The mission carried a series of scientific instruments to analyze the Martian atmosphere, climate, geology and the composition of its rocks and soil. It was the second project from NASA's Discovery Program, which promotes the use of low-cost spacecraft and frequent launches under the motto "cheaper, faster and better" promoted by the then administrator, Daniel Goldin. The mission was directed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory , a division of the California Institute of Technology, responsible for NASA's Mars Exploration Program. The project manager was JPL's Tony Spear.
This mission was the first of a series of missions to Mars that included rovers, and was the first successful lander since the two "Vikings" landed on the red planet in 1976. Although the Soviet Union successfully sent rovers to the Moon as part of the Lunokhod program in the 1970s, its attempts to use rovers in its Mars program failed.

"Mars Science Laboratory" is a robotic space probe mission to Mars launched by NASA on November 26, 2011, which successfully landed "Curiosity", a Mars rover, in Gale Crater on August 6, 2012. The overall objectives include investigating Mars' habitability, studying its climate and geology, and collecting data for a manned mission to Mars. The rover carries a variety of scientific instruments designed by an international team.
MSL successfully carried out the most accurate Martian landing of any known spacecraft, hitting a small target landing ellipse of only 7 by, in the Aeolis Palus region of Gale Crater. In the event, MSL achieved a landing 2.4 km east and 400 m north of the center of the target. This location is near the mountain Aeolis Mons . The rover mission is set to explore for at least 687 Earth days over a range of 5 by.
The Mars Science Laboratory mission is part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, a long-term effort for the robotic exploration of Mars that is managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of California Institute of Technology. The total cost of the MSL project is about US$2.5 billion.
Previous successful U.S. Mars rovers include "Sojourner" from the Mars Pathfinder mission and the Mars Exploration Rovers "Spirit" and "Opportunity". "Curiosity" is about twice as long and five times as heavy as "Spirit" and "Opportunity", and carries over ten times the mass of scientific instruments.
The MSL mission has four scientific goals: Determine the landing site's habitability including the role of water, the study of the climate and the geology of Mars. It is also useful preparation for a future manned mission to Mars.

It's the first rock chemically analysed and NASA scientists say it may be a slightly different type than they first believed.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We retracted the A-P-X-S from Barnacle Bill. We moved away from the rock, we back up. We did a series of soil mechanics measurements yesterday where we rotated the Rover wheel and actually dug the wheel in and plowed forward."
SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Matthew Golombeck, Mars Pathfinder Project Scientist
Data from the Sojourner rover's alpha proton X-ray spectrometer suggests that the football-sized rock nicknamed Barnacle Bill might be a kind of Andesite -- the
second most common type of lava found on Earth.
Based on its visual appearance, scientist Hap McSween said he had thought it might be Basalt, another common type of volcanic rock.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"It is a rather common lava type too, In fact it's the second most common lava type on the earth. But it is much more silicon rich and very different from these results. So this is a real surprise. We were not expecting to see a rock of this composition."
SUPER CAPTION: Hap McSween, Mars Pathfinder Project Scientist
However, he emphasized there was no confirmation that Barnacle Bill was formed by volcanic action, suggesting it could also be a sedimentary rock.
More data transmitted by the rover also showed that sunrises and sunsets on Mars are longer and brighter than on Earth because of the amount of dust in the atmosphere.
Overall, the mission continues to go well. NASA has so far received nearly 16-hundred images from Mars.

English/Mute
Scientists pouring over the latest data from Mars say the Red Planet is looking more and more like Earth everyday.
And NASA's team of rock experts say the latest views from the Pathfinder lander and robot rover are bringing new surprises.
They say close inspection of one rock, nicknamed Barnacle Bill, reveals striking similarities to rocks found on Earth.
The Sojourner rover is on the move. That was the message from NASA's Mars Pathfinder team of scientists on Wednesday.
Fresh images from the Red Planet show their Sojourner rover manoeuvring as it studied the Martian surface, making its way for a close-up view of a rock named Yogi.
Pathfinder scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California also had new information about the football- sized Martian rock they've dubbed Barnacle Bill.
That rock, the first to get close-up probing by the rover, is rich in silica - the quartz material found in sand on Earth.
Data from the rover suggests that Barnacle Bill might be a kind of andesite, the second most common type of volcanic lava on Earth.
But project scientists want to look at more rocks before they say if Barnacle Bill fits a pattern for Mars.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I think to really get the full understanding of what this rock is, whether it's either sedimentary rock or a volcanic rock, we really need to start looking at more rocks in the scene."
SUPER CAPTION: Matthew Golombek, Pathfinder project scientist
Examination of a second rock was expected to begin on Wednesday, with its chemical signature taken overnight by the robot geologist Sojourner.
The latest evidence hints that water may have existed on Mars more than 4 (b) billion years ago, the same era when life began on Earth.
And the Pathfinder analysts say more detailed conclusions are coming with each day of the mission.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Eventhough the images are there and now you can see the site around us, the science is just beginning. And day by day the interpretation is getting more and more sophisticated."
SUPER CAPTION: Peter Smith, Pathfinder imaging analyst
The new results may lead scientists to conclude that early Mars had water in its interior.
And NASA says there's a good chance the rock show on Mars will go on for some time, with their rover in good shape.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"You know we just have a vigorously healthy spacecraft in rover. There's nothing consumable on board that would preclude it from operating for a good deal of time."
SUPER CAPTION: Matthew Golombek, Pathfinder project scientist
Overall, the Pathfinder team say they're excited to see that Mars is a much more dynamic place than originally perceived.
They're hoping new up-close views of nearby Yogi will offer tantalizing details on the origin and makeup of Mars.

It was third time lucky for NASA and its Mars Pathfinder with the spacecraft finally on its way to the red planet.
Two launch attempts were scrubbed earlier in the week-- but Wednesday morning the probe blasted into space.
The unmanned rocket carrying Mars Pathfinder sat on the launch pad early Wednesday morning, waiting for liftoff.
Two previous attempts at launching the spacecraft were scrubbed due to bad weather and computer problems.
But on its third try, NASA sent the rocket up into the night skies over Cape Canaveral, Florida.
UPSOUND: "10, 9, 8 ,7, 6 ...green board..5, 4, 3, ..main engine start..1, 0..and liftoff of the delta rocket with Mars Pathfinder."
It's a long journey ahead for the spacecraft.
It will travel 310 (m) million miles before landing on the red planet July 4, 1997 -- beating a slower Global Surveyor, NASA launched in November by two months.
Both are the first of 10 U-S spacecraft to be sent to Mars over the next decade to scout for signs of life.
At Kennedy Space Center, NASA officials joked the launch went so smoothly it was "boring".
The only snag was with a sun sensor on the aircraft that had low voltage.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We could work around it, but we want to enable the sun sensor and I've got to emphasise that we don't know if there's any kind of a problem with it right now. It may just be an adjustment we have to make."
SUPER CAPTION: Tony Spear, Mission Director, Project Manager
The 196 (m) million U-S dollar Pathfinder is carrying the first-ever interplanetary rover --named Sojourner.
The six-wheeled cart with its jagged wheels made for digging into the Martian soil, will roam the planets frigid surface in search of rocks.
The rover is folded up in a lander that is wrapped in air bags.
Pathfinder will not orbit Mars first, but will go for a direct strike.
A parachute will slow Pathfinder as it plunges through the Martian atmosphere.
Then large air bags will inflate and cushion the spacecraft as it bounces across the surface of the planet.
The manager of the Mars exploration programme said she didn't know exactly what to expect from the rover.
SOUNDBITE: ( English)
"So I think just doing it is going to be the most exciting thing. I think the next thing will be just finding out anything we can about Mars. I don't know what to expect but we know that there probably won't be any green little people but there might be some unexpected findings in terms of mineralogy and the terrain, and then, the rover, we don't know if a small rover can actually work on Mars or not, that's why we are sending it. It's a technology experiment."
SUPER CAPTION: Donna Shirley, Manager of Mars Exploration Programme
The rover will roam around examining rocks and beaming back information about their composition as well as colour images to NASA.

NASA's launch of a Mars spacecraft has been abandoned for the second day in a row.
A computer problem forced the space agency to delay the launch with only a little over a minute remaining in the countdown.
The Mars Pathfinder sat on the launch pad early Tuesday morning, ready for lift-off in nearly perfect weather conditions.
But with just a little over a minute left in the countdown, NASA abandoned the launch.
UPSOUND:
Mission Control, "ATC3 main power disabled - reset."
NASA Commentator - "And we have had a hold, standing by for word on what the problem was."
The problem was apparently a computer on the ground.
It failed, and so did its backup.
NASA officials suspect a software problem.
It was the second day in a row that the launch was cancelled.
On Monday, rain, clouds and strong winds grounded the rocket.
The launch is rescheduled tentatively for early Wednesday, pending a quick resolution to the problem.
NASA has until the end of December to launch the 196 (m) million dollar (U-S) Pathfinder.
If scientists miss that window, they have to wait two years until Earth and Mars are back in the necessary alignment.
Once the spacecraft does get off the ground, it will make a 310 (m) million mile journey to the red planet.
Pathfinder is scheduled to land in July of 1997.
It will parachute down and then bounce across Mars' surface, protected by air bags.
Once it comes to a halt, the bags deflate, petals unfold and a six-wheeled rover about the size of a dog will come out.
The interplanetary rover will roam the Martian surface, examining rocks and beaming back data.

Evidence for Alien Artifacts on Mars
This richly illustrated and remarkable video makes a case for the idea that an alien race left huge constructions on Mars -- known as the Cydonia Mystery -- evidenced by a mile long, human-like 'Mars Face' surrounded by pyramid structures. In the wake of JPL's Pathfinder Mission to Mars, The Case for the Face unifies the research and opinions of a remarkably accomplished group of scientists, inclu

Mike Bara Advanced Ancient Aliens on Mars. Was there once a vast, technologically advanced civilisation on Mars and did it leave evidence of its existence behind for humans to find eons later? Was Mars once as lush and green as the Earth and teem

The Mars Exploration Rover mission landed two rovers on Mars in January 2004. The rovers' primary science objective is to read the record in the rocks and soils in order to search for evidence of past liquid water and to determine whether past environments were favorable for life. The twin rovers - Spirit and Opportunity - have been investigating two different landing sites, resulting in numerous exciting discoveries and providing tantalizing clues about past geologic activity on Mars. This talk will summarize the most important science findings.
The von Kármán Lecture, 19 May 2005.
Presented by Dr. Joy Crisp
JPL, Mars Exploration Rover Project Scientist
Dr. Joy Crisp, a geologist with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., will present an illustrated talk about the twin rovers' challenges and discoveries on Thursday evening, May 19, at JPL and on Friday evening, May 20, at Pasadena City College. She has been the project scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Project throughout the project's development and operations.
Spirit and Opportunity have continued exploring farther and farther from their landing sites in more than a year of extended missions after successfully completing their primary three-month missions more than a year ago. These robotic field geologists gave a dramatic answer of yes to the question of whether Mars has ever had a wet environment. Opportunity found evidence of an ancient body of water and Spirit has found rocks extensively altered by exposure to water.
Prior to the Mars Exploration Rover mission, Crisp worked on NASA's Mars Pathfinder mission and on studies of Earth's volcanoes. A Colorado native, she holds a bachelor's degree in geology from Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., and a Ph.D. in geology from Princeton University, Princeton, N.J.

Sojourner Truth (/soʊˈdʒɜrnər ˈtruːθ/; c. 1797 – November 26, 1883) was an African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist. Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, Ulster County, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. After going to court to recover her son, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man. Sojourner Truth was named Isabella ("Bell") Baumfree when she was born. She gave herself the name Sojourner Truth in 1843. Her best-known speech was delivered extemporaneously, in 1851, at the Ohio Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio. The speech became widely known as "Ain't I a Woman?" (a title taken from a version of the speech rewritten by a white writer using a stereotypical Southern dialect). During the Civil War, Truth helped recruit black troops for the Union Army; after the war, she tried unsuccessfully to secure land grants from the federal government for former slaves.
Other honors and commemorations include (by year):
1862 – William Wetmore Story's statue, "The Libyan Sibyl", inspired by Sojourner Truth, won an award at the London World Exhibition.[4]
1892 – Albion artist Frank Courter is commissioned to paint the meeting between Truth and President Abraham Lincoln.[3]
1969 – The leftist group the Sojourner Truth Organization is named after her. The group folded in 1985.
1971 – Sojourner Truth Library at New Paltz State University of New York is named in Truth's honor.[20]
1976 – Interstate 194 is named for her in Michigan.
1981 – Truth is inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York.[3]
1981 – Feminist theorist and author bell hooks titles her first major work after Truth's "Ain't I a Woman?" speech.
1983 – Truth is in the first group of women inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in Lansing.[3]
1986 – The U.S. Postal Service issues a commemorative postage stamp honoring Sojourner Truth.[3][21]
1987 – Truth is commemorated in a monument of "Michigan Legal Milestones" erected by the State Bar of Michigan.[22]
1997 – The NASA Mars Pathfinder mission's robotic rover is named "Sojourner" after her.[23]
1998 – S.T. Writes Home appears on the web offering "Letters to Mom from Sojourner Truth," in which the Mars Pathfinder Rover at times echoes its namesake.
1999 – A 12-foot-high monument is built to honor her in Battle Creek, Michigan.[24]
1999 – The Broadway musical The Civil War includes an abridged version of Truth's "Ain't I a Woman?" speech as a spoken-word segment. On the 1999 cast recording, the track was performed by Maya Angelou.
2002 – Scholar Molefi Kete Asante lists Sojourner Truth on his list of 100 Greatest African Americans.[25]
2004 – The King's College, located inside the Empire State Building in New York City, names one of their houses "The House of Sojourner Truth".
2009 – Truth becomes the first black woman honored with a bust in the U.S. Capitol.[26] The bust was sculpted by noted artist Artis Lane. It is in Emancipation Hall of the Capitol Visitor Center.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring "the Martian" home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney's safe return. Based on a best-selling novel.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew.

- NASA's Asteroid Redirect Mission
Brian Muirhead
Chief Engineer, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory
The Asteroid Redirect Mission is two missions; a robotic and a crewed mission. The robotic mission is proposed to use advanced solar electric propulsion to rendezvous with a large asteroid, land on it, pick up a boulder and lift off with it. The spacecraft will then return to the Earth-Moon system where a human crew in the Orion spacecraft will dock with the robotic spacecraft and conduct two extra-vehicular activities (EVAs) to explore the boulder and bring back samples. These two missions are core building blocks in NASA’s plans to extend human exploration into the solar system, leading eventually the human exploration of Mars.
---
Brian Muirhead has worked on numerous spacecraft and technology projects since joining JPL in 1977, including the Galileo mission to Jupiter, and the Shuttle Imaging Radar-C. He was responsible for the design, development, test, and launch of the Mars Pathfinder spacecraft that landed successfully on Mars on July 4, 1997. He was Project Manager of the Deep Impact Project from formulation through CDR in 2002. He worked as the Chief Engineer of the Mars Science Laboratory until August 2004 when he became Chief Engineer of JPL. In February, 2007 Brian was named Chief Architect and Program Systems Engineer for the Constellation Program, which included responsibility for the architecture for a new human exploration spaceflight system to the Moon and beyond. He returned to JPL as the Chief Engineer at the Executive Council level in December, 2009. Brian is also currently the Project Manager for the the Asteroid Redirect Robotic Mission (ARRM).
He received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Mexico in 1977 and an MS in Aeronautical Engineering from Caltech in 1982. He is the recipient of two of NASA’s Outstanding Leadership Medals for his work on Mars Pathfinder and Constellation. He is the author of “High Velocity Leadership” (Harper Business, 1999), and “Going to Mars” (Simon and Schuster, 2004, with Garfield and Judy Reeves-Stevens).

Carl Sagan: His Life, Writings and Scientific Work - Quotes, Cosmos (1999)

Carl Edward Sagan (/ˈseɪɡən/; November 9, 1934 – December 20, 1996) was an American astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, science popularizer, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences. His contributions were central to the discovery of the high surface temperatures of Venus. However, he is best known for his contributions to the scientific research of extraterrestrial life, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. Sagan assembled the first physical messages that were sent into space: the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record, universal messages that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find them.
He published more than 600 scientific papers[2] and articles and was author, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. Sagan is known for many of his popular science books, such as The Dragons of Eden, Broca's Brain and Pale Blue Dot, and for the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which he narrated and co-wrote. The most widely watched series in the history of American public television, Cosmos has been seen by at least 500 million people across 60 different countries.[3] The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. He also wrote the science fiction novel Contact, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name.
Sagan always advocated scientific skeptical inquiry and the scientific method, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan and his works received numerous awards and honors, including the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal, the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book The Dragons of Eden, and, regarding Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, two Emmy Awards, the Peabody Award and the Hugo Award. He married three times and had five children. After suffering from myelodysplasia, Sagan died of pneumonia at the age of 62 on December 20, 1996.
The 1997 movie Contact, based on Sagan's novel of the same name and finished after his death, ends with the dedication "For Carl". His photo can also be seen at 59:25 in the film.
In 1997 the Sagan Planet Walk was opened in Ithaca, New York. It is a walking-scale model of the Solar System, extending 1.2 km from the center of The Commons in downtown Ithaca to the Sciencenter, a hands-on museum. The exhibition was created in memory of Carl Sagan, who was an Ithaca resident and Cornell Professor. Professor Sagan had been a founding member of the museum's advisory board.[99]
The landing site of the unmanned Mars Pathfinder spacecraft was renamed the Carl Sagan Memorial Station on July 5, 1997. Asteroid 2709 Sagan is named in his honor.
Sagan's son, Nick Sagan, wrote several episodes in the Star Trek franchise. In an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise entitled "Terra Prime", a quick shot is shown of the relic rover Sojourner, part of the Mars Pathfinder mission, placed by a historical marker at Carl Sagan Memorial Station on the Martian surface. The marker displays a quote from Sagan: "Whatever the reason you're on Mars, I'm glad you're there, and I wish I was with you." Sagan's student Steve Squyres led the team that landed the rovers Spirit and Opportunity successfully on Mars in 2004.
On November 9, 2001, on what would have been Sagan's 67th birthday, the Ames Research Center dedicated the site for the Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life in the Cosmos. "Carl was an incredible visionary, and now his legacy can be preserved and advanced by a 21st century research and education laboratory committed to enhancing our understanding of life in the universe and furthering the cause of space exploration for all time", said NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin. Ann Druyan was at the Center as it opened its doors on October 22, 2006.
Sagan has at least three awards named in his honor:
The Carl Sagan Memorial Award presented jointly since 1997 by the American Astronomical Society and The Planetary Society,
The Carl Sagan Medal for Excellence in Public Communication in Planetary Science presented since 1998 by the American Astronomical Society's Division for Planetary Sciences (AAS/DPS) for outstanding communication by an active planetary scientist to the general public—Carl Sagan was one of the original organizing committee members of the DPS, and
The Carl Sagan Award for Public Understanding of Science presented by the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP)—Sagan was the first recipient of the CSSP award in 1993.

This richly illustrated and remarkable video makes a case for the idea that an alien race left huge constructions on Mars -- known as the Cydonia Mystery -- evidenced by a mile long, human-like 'Mars Face' surrounded by pyramid structures. In the wake of JPL's Pathfinder Mission to Mars, The Case for the Face unifies the research and opinions of a remarkably accomplished group of scientists, including a former NASA astronaut, a quantum physicist who is chair of a space science programme, leading meteor researchers, nine PhDs, the best-selling science author in Germany, and the authors of every credential paper ever published on the Mars anomalies. This is the only video to synthesize the vast amounts of solid scientific research on the 'Mars Face' and is an elegantly constructed story of wonder, perseverance and revelation.
This is a valuable tool and aid to anyone interested in obtaining certain information about the anomalies located on Mars. Some are very interesting and provide compelling evidence for alien artifacts.

Mike Bara Advanced Ancient Aliens on Mars. Was there once a vast, technologically advanced civilisation on Mars and did it leave evidence of its existence behind for humans to find eons later? Did these advanced extraterrestrial visitors vanish in a solar system wide cataclysm of their own making, only to make their way to Earth and start anew? Was Mars once as lush and green as the Earth and teeming with life? Did Mars once orbit a missing member of the solar system, a Super Earth that vanished in a disaster that devastated life on Earth and Venus and left us only the asteroid belt as evidence of its once grand existence? Did the survivors of this catastrophe leave monuments and temples behind, arranged in a mathematical precision designed to teach us the Secret of a new physicsthat could lift us back to the stars? Does the planet have an automated defence shield that swallows up robotic probes if they wander into the wrong areas? And are the lights still on down there, deep below the sands of Mars, just waiting for us to uncover them?
New York Times Bestselling author, Mike Bara, examines all these questions and more in this interview and his new book ANCIENT ALIENS ON MARS.
Chapters included in his book are : War of the Worlds, The Mars Tidal Model, The Death of Mars, Cydonia and the Face on Mars, The Monuments of Mars, The Search for Life on Mars, The True Colours of Mars and The Pathfinder Sphinx. For more information about Dr. Rita please visit www.soulhealer.com
