USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, a 45,000-ton Midway class large aircraft carrier, was built at the New York Navy Yard. Commissioned on Navy Day, 27 October 1945, she made a shakedown cruise to Brazil in February 1946. During April and May of that year, she took part in Eighth Fleet maneuvers off the east coast, the Navy's first major post-World War II training exercise. The first of Franklin D. Roosevelt's nearly two dozen deployments to the Mediterranean Sea followed in August-October. Her second Med cruise began in July 1948 and lasted into early 1949. As the Cold War became increasingly tense in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the carrier regularly crossed the Atlantic for operations with the Sixth Fleet off Southern Europe, carrying both conventionally and nuclear-armed aircraft to deter the Soviet Union and its client states. She was reclassified as an attack aircraft carrier in October 1952, changing her hull number from CVB-42 to CVA-42.
In early 1954, Franklin D. Roosevelt steamed around Cape Horn to begin a two-year-long modernization on the west coast. When this work was completed, she was newly equipped with an angled flight deck, "hurricane" bow, steam catapults and many other features that facilitated the operation of high-performance aircraft. In November 1956, following her return to the east coast, Franklin D. Roosevelt made another cruise to European waters. Over the next decade, she deployed to the Mediterranean another seven times, doing her part to provide a powerful and continuous U.S. Navy presence in that often-troubled region. She recorded her 100,000th aircraft landing in March 1961.
From August 1966 to January 1967, Franklin D. Roosevelt made her only Western Pacific cruise, during which she conducted combat operations against enemy targets in Southeast Asia. Her seventeenth Sixth Fleet tour followed in 1967-68, after which she entered the shipyard for additional modernization work that gave her an additional deck-edge aircraft elevator, located forward of the island on the starboard side.
Franklin D. Roosevelt returned to the Mediterranean six more times during 1970-77. Her twenty-first Sixth Fleet deployment was marked by indirect participation in the October 1973 Middle East war, as she served as a transit landing "field" for aircraft en route for delivery to Israel. She received another change in hull number, to CV-42, in June 1975. Franklin D. Roosevelt completed her twenty-third, and final, Mediterranean tour in April 1977. Decommissioned in October of that year, she was sold for scrapping in April 1978.

USS Oriskany, a 27,100 ton Ticonderoga class aircraft carrier, was built at the New York Navy Yard. Though she was launched in October 1945, construction was suspended in August 1947 and she was completed to a revised design that was also used in modernizing several other ships of the Essex and Ticonderoga classes. Commissioned in September 1950, Oriskany deployed to the Mediterranean Sea between May and October 1951 and steamed around Cape Horn to join the Pacific Fleet in May 1952. She made one Korean War combat cruise, from September 1952 to May 1953.
Following the end of the Korean conflict, Oriskany continued her Pacific Fleet service for more than two more decades, deploying regularly to the Western Pacific for tours of duty with the Seventh Fleet. She was out of commission from January 1957 until March 1959, during which time she was modernized with a new angled flight deck, steam catapults, an enclosed "hurricane" bow and many other improvements that permitted safer operation of high-performance aircraft. In 1961, she became the first aircraft carrier to be fitted with the revolutionary Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS).
Oriskany's second war began with her 1965 WestPac cruise, during which her planes hit targets in North and South Vietnam. Several more combat tours followed as the Southeast Asian conflict waxed and waned. Tragedy struck the carrier on 26 October 1966, during her second Vietnam War deployment, when fire ravaged her forward compartments, killing 44 members of her crew and air group. Oriskany was repaired in the U.S., returned to the war zone in mid-1967 and rendered assistance to USS Forrestal when that carrier also suffered a major fire. Following twenty-six years of service, USS Oriskany was decommissioned in September 1976. She was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in July 1989 and sold for scrapping in 1994. However, after a prolonged effort that exhibited the perilous state of the domestic ship-breaking industry at the end of the Twentieth Century, she was repossessed in 1997 and spent nearly a decade awaiting final disposition. On 17 May 2006, following careful preparations, Oriskany was deliberately sunk off Pensacola, Florida, to serve as an artificial reef and sport diving attraction.

Also shown are Sergeant E Hodgson, one time prisoner of the Japanese in Timor, Sergeant J Poynton BC (Dutch) DCM MID, Corporal Harrison - claimed by Major Laidlaw and others to be the finest soldier in the AIF, Lance Corporal F O'Neill, who brought out the radio from Japanese held Tibessi in Timor on which contact with Darwin was first made.

George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George; 14 December 1895 – 6 February 1952) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death. He was the last Emperor of India, and the first Head of the Commonwealth.
As the second son of King George V, he was not expected to inherit the throne and spent his early life in the shadow of his elder brother, Edward. He served in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force during World War I, and after the war took on the usual round of public engagements. He married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923, and they had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret.
George's elder brother ascended the throne as Edward VIII on the death of their father in 1936. However, later that year Edward revealed his desire to marry the divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin advised Edward that for political and religious reasons he could not marry Mrs Simpson and remain king. Edward abdicated in order to marry, and George ascended the throne as the third monarch of the House of Windsor.

Imbecile Vidkunchik (Asperger's) Quisling, protégé of Nansen, Foch, Stalin & Bernadotte, married to Soviet NKVD sleeper Maria Boskowitz, was executed by firing squad at Akershus Fortress at 02:40 on 24 October 1945. His last words before being shot were, "I'm convicted unfairly and I die innocent." After his death his body was cremated, leaving the ashes to be interred in Fyresdal. His Soviet widow Maria lived in Oslo until her death in 1980. They had no children. Upon her death, she donated all their Russian antiques to a charitable fund that operates in Oslo to this day. For most of his later political career, Quisling lived in a mansion on Bygdøy in Oslo that he called "Gimle", after the place in Norse mythology where survivors of the great battle of Ragnarok were to live. The Nasjonal Samling movement was wiped out as a political force in Norway, though Quisling himself has become one of the most written about Norwegians of all time. The word quisling itself became synonymous with traitor. The term was coined by the British newspaper The Times in its lead of 15 April 1940, titled "Quislings everywhere". The noun has survived and for a while during and after World War II, the back-formed verb to quisle /ˈkwɪzəl/ was used. Her first and only mission into enemy territory consisted of the attempted delivery of uranium oxide and German advanced weapons technology to the Empire of Japan. After learning of Germany's unconditional surrender, the submarine's crew surrendered to the United States on 14 May 1945. U-234 departed Kristiansand for Japan on 15 April 1945, running submerged at snorkel depth for the first 16 days, and surfacing after that only because her commander Kapitänleutnant Johann-Heinrich Fehler. The reactor became operative in 1958, and is operated by the Institute for Energy Technology. The reactor is a Boiling water reactor (BWR) moderated by heavy water. The reactor is used for safety-focussed research into materials, fuel burnup, and fuel behaviour in prolonged operating conditions in co-operation with organizations from 19 countries. - Its current operating license expires at the end of 2014. Authorities are considering whether to extend the operating license beyond 2014. In May 2014, the Norwegian Radiological Protection Authority recommended a ten-year license extension. Paulo broke the story about fuel testing done at the reactor in regards to the nuclear submarine program of Brazil. The testing did not have the proper authorization from Norway's government. Brazil is not a participant in the joint 2012-4 research programme. On 4 September 2013, Norwegian media wrote that the institute "is admitting to illegal cooperation with companies in four more countries:" Russia, Argentina, France and the United States. USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, a 45,000-ton Midway class large aircraft carrier, was built at the New York Navy Yard. Commissioned on Navy Day, 27 October 1945, she made a shakedown cruise to Brazil in February 1946. During April and May of that year, she took part in Eighth Fleet maneuvers off the east coast, the Navy's first major post-World War II training exercise. The first of Franklin D. Roosevelt's nearly two dozen deployments to the Mediterranean Sea followed in August-October. Her second Med cruise began in July 1948 and lasted into early 1949. As the Cold War became increasingly tense in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the carrier regularly crossed the Atlantic for operations with the Sixth Fleet off Southern Europe, carrying both conventionally and nuclear-armed aircraft to deter th... -

Aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CV-34) is launched - 13 October 1945
USS Oriskany, a 27,100 ton Ticonderoga class aircraft carrier, was built at the New York Navy Yard. Though she was launched in October 1945, construction was suspended in August 1947 and she was completed to a revised design that was also used in modernizing several other ships of the Essex and Ticonderoga classes. Commissioned in September 1950, Oriskany deployed to the Mediterranean Sea between May and October 1951 and steamed around Cape Horn to join the Pacific Fleet in May 1952. She made one Korean War combat cruise, from September 1952 to May 1953. Following the end of the Korean conflict, Oriskany continued her Pacific Fleet service for more than two more decades, deploying regularly to the Western Pacific for tours of duty with the Seventh Fleet. Scenes include - Major Laidlaw, CO of the Squadron, Lieutenant B Campbell and Captain R Fox. Also shown are Sergeant E Hodgson, one time prisoner of the Japanese in Timor, Sergeant J Poynton BC (Dutch) DCM MID, Corporal Harrison - claimed by Major Laidlaw and others to be the finest soldier in the AIF, Lance Corporal F O'Neill, who brought out the radio from Japanese held Tibessi in Timor on which contact with Darwin was first made. -

His last words before being shot were, "I'm convicted unfairly and I die innocent." After his death his body was cremated, leaving the ashes to be interred in Fyresdal. His Soviet widow Maria lived in Oslo until her death in 1980. They had no children. Upon her death, she donated all their Russian antiques to a charitable fund that operates in Oslo to this day. USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, a 45,000-ton Midway class large aircraft carrier, was built at the New York Navy Yard. Commissioned on Navy Day, 27 October 1945, she made a shakedown cruise to Brazil in February 1946. During April and May of that year, she took part in Eighth Fleet maneuvers off the east coast, the Navy's first major post-World War II training exercise. The first of Franklin D. Roosevelt's nearly two dozen deployments to the Mediterranean Sea followed in August-October. Her second Med cruise began in July 1948 and lasted into early 1949. As the Cold War became increasingly tense in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the carrier regularly crossed the Atlantic for operations with the Sixth Fleet off Southern Europe, carrying both conventionally and nuclear-armed aircraft to deter the Soviet Union and its client states. She was reclassified as an attack aircraft carrier in October 1952, changing her hull number from CVB-42 to CVA-42.
In early 1954, Franklin D. Roosevelt steamed around Cape Horn to begin a two-year-long modernization on the west coast. When this work was completed, she was newly equipped with an angled flight deck, "hurricane" bow, steam catapults and many other features that facilitated the operation of high-performance aircraft. In November 1956, following her return to the east coast, Franklin D. Roosevelt made another cruise to European waters. Over the next decade, she deployed to the Mediterranean another seven times, doing her part to provide a powerful and continuous U.S. Navy presence in that often-troubled region. She recorded her 100,000th aircraft landing in March 1961.
From August 1966 to January 1967, Franklin D. Roosevelt made her only Western Pacific cruise, during which she conducted combat operations against enemy targets in Southeast Asia. Her seventeenth Sixth Fleet tour followed in 1967-68, after which she entered the shipyard for additional modernization work that gave her an additional deck-edge aircraft elevator, located forward of the island on the starboard side.
Franklin D. Roosevelt returned to the Mediterranean six more times during 1970-77. Her twenty-first Sixth Fleet deployment was marked by indirect participation in the October 1973 Middle East war, as she served as a transit landing "field" for aircraft en route for delivery to Israel. USS Oriskany, a 27,100 ton Ticonderoga class aircraft carrier, was built at the New York Navy Yard. Though she was launched in October 1945, construction was suspended in August 1947 and she was completed to a revised design that was also used in modernizing several other ships of the Essex and Ticonderoga classes. Commissioned in September 1950, Oriskany deployed to the Mediterranean Sea between May and October 1951 and steamed around Cape Horn to join the Pacific Fleet in May 1952. She made one Korean War combat cruise, from September 1952 to May 1953.
Following the end of the Korean conflict, Oriskany continued her Pacific Fleet service for more than two more decades, deploying regularly to the Western Pacific for tours of duty with the Seventh Fleet. She was out of commission from January 1957 until March 1959, during which time she was modernized with a new angled flight deck, steam catapults, an enclosed "hurricane" bow and many other improvements that permitted safer operation of high-performance aircraft. In 1961, she became the first aircraft carrier to be fitted with the revolutionary Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS).
Oriskany's second war began with her 1965 WestPac cruise, during which her planes hit targets in North and South Vietnam. Several more combat tours followed as the Southeast Asian conflict waxed and waned. Tragedy struck the carrier on 26 October 1966, during her second Vietnam War deployment, when fire ravaged her forward compartments, killing 44 members of her crew and air group. Oriskany was repaired in the U.S., returned to the war zone in mid-1967 and rendered assistance to USS Forrestal when that carrier also suffered a major fire. Following twenty-six years of service, USS Oriskany was decommissioned in September 1976. She was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in July 1989 and sold for scrapping in 1994. However, after a prolonged effort that exhibited the perilous state of the domestic ship-breaking industry at the end of the Twentieth Century, she was repossessed in 1997 and spent nearly a decade awaiting final disposition. On 17 May 2006, following careful preparations, Oriskany was deliberately sunk off Pensacola, Florida, to serve as an artificial reef and sport diving attraction.

His Soviet widow Maria lived in Oslo until her death in 1980. They had no children. Upon her death, she donated all their Russian antiques to a charitable fund that operates in Oslo to this day. For most of his later political career, Quisling lived in a mansion on Bygdøy in Oslo that he called "Gimle", after the place in Norse mythology where survivors of the great battle of Ragnarok were to live.
The Nasjonal Samling movement was wiped out as a political force in Norway, though Quisling himself has become one of the most written about Norwegians of all time. The word quisling itself became synonymous with traitor. The term was coined by the British newspaper The Times in its lead of 15 April 1940, titled "Quislings everywhere". The noun has survived and for a while during and after World War II, the back-formed verb to quisle /ˈkwɪzəl/ was used. One who was quisling was in the act of committing treason.[149]

German submarine U-234 was a Type XB U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II.
Her first and only mission into enemy territory consisted of the attempted delivery of uranium oxide and German advanced weapons technology to the Empire of Japan. After learning of Germany's unconditional surrender, the submarine's crew surrendered to the United States on 14 May 1945.
U-234 departed Kristiansand for Japan on 15 April 1945, running submerged at snorkel depth for the first 16 days, and surfacing after that only because her commander Kapitänleutnant Johann-Heinrich Fehler. U-234 surfaced on 10 May in the interests of better radio reception and received Dönitz's last order to the submarine force, ordering all U-boats to surface, hoist black flags and surrender to Allied forces.

The Halden Reactor is a 25MW nuclear reactor located in Halden. The reactor became operative in 1958, and is operated by the Institute for Energy Technology. The reactor is a Boiling water reactor (BWR) moderated by heavy water. The reactor is used for safety-focussed research into materials, fuel burnup, and fuel behaviour in prolonged operating conditions in co-operation with organizations from 19 countries. - Its current operating license expires at the end of 2014. Authorities are considering whether to extend the operating license beyond 2014. In May 2014, the Norwegian Radiological Protection Authority recommended a ten-year license extension.

A 12 May 2013 article in O Estado de S. Paulo broke the story about fuel testing done at the reactor in regards to the nuclear submarine program of Brazil. The testing did not have the proper authorization from Norway's government. Brazil is not a participant in the joint 2012-4 research programme.
On 4 September 2013, Norwegian media wrote that the institute "is admitting to illegal cooperation with companies in four more countries:" Russia, Argentina, France and the United States. Later, Norway's foreign ministry filed a complaint with PST.triggering an investigation that is on-going.

Akershus Fortress was liberated on 11 May 1945, when it was handed over to Terje Rollem. After the war, eight Norwegian traitors who had been tried for war crimes and sentenced to death were also executed at the fortress. Among those executed were Vidkun Quisling and Siegfried Fehmer.

Allied forces arrived at the end of October 1945, the pemuda ('youth') foothold in Surabaya city was described as "a strong unified fortress". Ferocious fighting erupted when 6,000 Indian troops landed in the city to evacuate European internees.
On October 26, 1945, Brigadier A. W. S Mallaby reached an agreement with Mr. Suryo, the Republic of Indonesia's governor of East Java that the British would not ask Indonesian troops/militia to hand over their weapons. An apparent misunderstanding about the agreement between British troops in Jakarta (led by Lieutenant General Sir Philip Christison) and Mallaby's troops in Surabaya was to have have serious ramifications.
On October 27, 1945, a British plane from Jakarta dropped leaflets over Surabaya urging all Indonesian troops and militia to surrender their weapons. The leader of Indonesian troops and militia was angered, seeing it as a --BREAKING OF THE AGREEMENT REACHED-- with Mallaby earlier. On October 28, 1945, they attacked British troops in Surabaya killing more than 200 British Troops
Brigadier Mallaby was killed in Surabaya on 30 October 1945 under unclear circumstances that remain debated today.
Initially British troops were 6,000-strong-armed Indian soldiers from 49th Infantry Brigade of the 23rd Indian Division. When the battle reached its peak, British sent additional troops which consisted of 24,000 fully-armed soldiers from the 5th Indian Division, 24 Sherman tanks, 24 armed aircraft, 2 cruisers and 3 destroyers.
Indonesian forces consisted of 20,000 soldiers from the newly-formed Tentara Keamanan Rakyat (TKR; People's Security Troops) and estimated 100,000-120,000 irregulars. TKR was formed by the former members of Peta, a semi-military organization during Japanese occupation. The irregulars consisted of pro-Independence mob, armed with rifles, swords, and spears. Some of their weapons were taken from the demoralized Japanese troops.
At dawn on 10 November, a day now commemorated in Indonesia as Heroes' Day, British troops began a methodical advance through the city under the cover of naval and air bombardment. Fighting was heavy with British troops clearing buildings room by room and consolidating their gains. Despite the fanatical resistance of Indonesians, half the city was conquered in three days and the fighting over in three weeks.

he Nuremberg Trials were a series of military tribunals, held by the Allied forces of World War II, most notable for the prosecution of prominent members of the political, military, and economic leadership of the Nazi Germany. The trials were held in the city of Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, in 1945--46, at the Palace of Justice.
The first and best known of these trials, described as "[t]he greatest trial in history" by Norman Birkett, one of the British judges who presided over it, was the Trial of the Major War Criminals before the International Military Tribunal (IMT). Held between 20 November 1945 and 1 October 1946, the Tribunal was given the task of trying 23 of the most important political and military leaders of the Third Reich, though one of the defendants, Martin Bormann, was tried in absentia, while another, Robert Ley, committed suicide within a week of the trial's commencement. Absent from the 23 were Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, and Joseph Goebbels, all of whom had committed suicide several months before the indictment was signed.
The second set of trials of lesser war criminals was conducted under Control Council Law No. 10 at the US Nuremberg Military Tribunals (NMT); among them included the Doctors' Trial and the Judges' Trial. Twelve of the accused were sentenced to death, seven received prison sentences, and three were acquitted.
The death sentences were carried out 16 October 1946 by hanging using the standard drop method instead of long drop. The U.S. army denied claims that the drop length was too short which caused the condemned to die slowly from strangulation instead of quickly from a broken neck. But evidence remains that some of the condemned men died agonizingly slowly taking from between 14 minutes to choke to death to as longs as struggling for 28 minutes. The executioner was John C. Woods. The executions took place in the gymnasium of the court building (demolished in 1983)...

he Nuremberg Trials were a series of military tribunals, held by the Allied forces of World War II, most notable for the prosecution of prominent members of the political, military, and economic leadership of the Nazi Germany. The trials were held in the city of Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, in 1945--46, at the Palace of Justice.
The first and best known of these trials, described as "[t]he greatest trial in history" by Norman Birkett, one of the British judges who presided over it, was the Trial of the Major War Criminals before the International Military Tribunal (IMT). Held between 20 November 1945 and 1 October 1946, the Tribunal was given the task of trying 23 of the most important political and military leaders of the Third Reich, though one of the defendants, Martin Bormann, was tried in absentia, while another, Robert Ley, committed suicide within a week of the trial's commencement. Absent from the 23 were Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, and Joseph Goebbels, all of whom had committed suicide several months before the indictment was signed.
The second set of trials of lesser war criminals was conducted under Control Council Law No. 10 at the US Nuremberg Military Tribunals (NMT); among them included the Doctors' Trial and the Judges' Trial. INTRO: October 12, 1945, was a pivotal day in Lao history as it marked a turning point in the country's struggle for liberation from foreign domination. This year we celebrate the 69th Independence Day.
STORY: The declaration of independence on October 12, 1945, was a landmark for Laos and marked the success of the Lao people in their fight against foreign aggressors to take back ownership of their country.
Independence Day was a great victory for Laos in that the world finally recognised the independence and territory of Laos, as well as the Lao people and government.
The occasion was the fruit of the revolutionary movement under the leadership of the Indochinese Communist Party, during which a large number of Lao people and their brethren from other Indochinese countries sacrificed their lives in the battle to restore independence.
The victory achieved on October 12 heralded the start of a bright new era in which Lao citizens and the whole country enjoyed independence, sovereignty, and their territorial rights. The victory, which came after a protracted period of fighting, reflected the strong desire of the Lao people for mastery over their nation, as well as for full independence and unity.
October 12, 1945, also put an end to interference by fascist groups, which had been expanding their power during World War II. Independence was also achieved through years of fighting by multi-ethnic Lao groups, who fought against the intervention and aggression of imperialism. Foreign powers sought to expand their domination in many countries, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, where they ruled by force.
The events of October 12 proved significant to the combative strategies of the Lao people, as they succeeded in shaking off the administrative yoke of the French imperialists who had ruled Laos for many decades.
The struggle for independence laid the foundation for the Lao people to unite in their fight for liberation. People of all classes unite d in a way never seen before in Laos.
The fighting at this time involved direct confrontation between the Lao, the French imperialists and the Japanese fascists. This marked the beginning of a united fighting force that sought to put an end to disputes that centred on the class structure that existed in Laos at that time.
The Indochinese Communist Party was established in 1930 and Phak Khaen Lao ( Lao Party of Lao Territory) was born on Donxingxou Island in central Vientiane in 1934. This gave the Lao revolutionaries a new impetus and direction in their fight against the French aggressors and Japanese armed forces.
On May 9, 1945, the Soviet Union's Red Army gained victory over the German fascists, spurring the end of World War II. At the same time Japanese armed forces declared unconditional surrender. The changing international situation favoured those countries fighting for independence, such as Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.
Using this opportunity, the Indochinese Communist Party led by President Ho Chi Minh organised uprisings and seized administrative power throughout Indochina. In August, the Vietnamese revolutionary movement declared success, and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was established on September 2, 1945. Laos also seized the opportunity and its citizens rose up to overthrow the Japanese fascists and French colonialists on August 23, 1945. There was a public gathering in Vientiane at the sports stadium (now Chao Anouvong Stadium) to proclaim the country's independence to the world and establish the Issara government (Free Lao government).
