North Wilkesboro Speedway
Wilkes County, North Carolina
North Wilkesboro Speedway's last
NASCAR race was on
September 29,
1996.
Jeff Gordon in the #24 DuPont
Chevrolet Monte Carlo won that race, the
1996 NASCAR Winston Cup Series (now the
Sprint Cup Series)
Tyson Holly Farms 400.
New Hampshire International Speedway Owner Bob Bahre and
Charlotte Motor Speedway Owner
Bruton Smith went in together to buy North Wilkesboro Speedway after its Owner,
Enoch Staley, died on May 22,
1995. Bruton Smith first bought
150 shares of the speedway, which was half ownership of it, from
Jack Combs and his family at $6 million. For the remainer of 1995 Bruton Smith and
Mike Staley, Enoch Staley's son, co-owned North Wilkesboro Speedway. On
January 1, 1996 Mike Staley on behalf of the heirs of Enoch Staley sold the other half of the speedway to Bob Bahre for $7 million. Staley cited his decision was painful but a necessary one to look after his own family's well being quoting it was "the only alternative."
Bruton Smith and Bob Bahre then became co-owners of the speedway in 1996.
Smith and Bahre only bought their shares of the speedway so Smith could get a
NASCAR Winston Cup Series race date at his new
Texas Motor Speedway and Bahre wanted the same thing, but only a second race date, at his New Hampshire International Speedway. Smith and Bahre then received offers to buy North Wilkesboro Speedway. In
2003 Smith and Bahre offered to sell North Wilkesboro Speedway for $14 million even though Wilkes County, North Carolina valued the speedway at $9.2
Million. Smith and Bahre disputed this value with
Wilkes County stating the speedway should be valued at $12 million. In
2005 Smith and Bahre lowered their asking price for the speedway from $14 million to a firm $12 million. Also in 2005 Wilkes County valued the speedway at $4.83 million.
In
2007 Bruton Smith bought New Hampshire International Speedway from Bob Bahre. This move also bought out Bahre's share in North Wilkesboro Speedway therefore making Smith the full owner of North Wilkesboro Speedway.
In
November 2009 Speedway Associates Inc. (
SAI) who consisted of
Terri Parsons, the late
1973 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Champion Benny Parsons' wife,
Alton McBride Sr., Alton McBride Jr.,
Dave Ehret,
John Burwell, and
Bosco Lowe made a three year lease/purchase agreement with Bruton Smith for North Wilkesboro Speedway. In
2010 SAI opened the speedway and hosted the
USARacing Pro Cup Series,
ASA Late Model Series, and the
Pro All Stars Series. SAI also renamed the speedway as Historic North Wilkesboro Speedway along with making a deal with
Goodyear who would become a sponsor for the speedway. Therefore, the speedway was known as the Historic North Wilkesboro Speedway presented by Goodyear beginning in 2010.
In 2010
Chase Elliott won the Pro All Stars Series (
PASS)
Labor Day Classic 200 at the speedway. On
April 10, 2011 Chris Eggleston won the PASS event called "
The Race" at the speedway which included previous NASCAR
Daytona 500 winners
Geoffrey (
Geoff) Bodine and
Sterling Marlin,
NASCAR Xfinity Series winner
Ryan Blaney and driver
Ross Kenseth, in the field. Shortly after that race SAI stated they had ran out of money necessary to go forward and closed Historic North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 9,
2011. From Labor Day weekend in 2010 to
April 9, 2011 SAI was able to bring six large racing events and more than a dozen smaller racing events to the speedway.
Since SAI fell through on their three year lease/purchase agreement Bruton Smith of
Speedway Motorsports, Inc. still owns North Wilkesboro Speedway. The speedway has been left as is since 2011 with no new plans.
Someone or another group with enough money to buy the speedway outright from Smith will be the only hope for this speedway to see racing again.
The speedway has not been touched since its last NASCAR race in 1996. SAI from 2009 to 2011 made some maintenance repairs to the speedway and repainted the walls in a few minor areas. Still today the speedway displays the NASCAR Winston Cup Series logos, now faded, from the 1996 race that Jeff Gordon won among other nostalgic items that are on the property, and the no trespassing signs.
