The group has referred to itself as the Islamic State or IS since it proclaimed a worldwide caliphate in June 2014 and named Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as its caliph. As a caliphate, it claims religious, political and military authority over all Muslims worldwide. The group's adoption of the name "Islamic State" and idea of a caliphate have been widely criticised, with the United Nations, various governments, and mainstream Muslim groups rejecting its statehood or caliphhood. As of December 2015, the group has control over vast landlocked territory in Iraq and Syria, with a population estimate ranging between 2.8 million and 8 million people and where it enforces its interpretation of sharia law. ISIL affiliates control small areas of Libya, Nigeria and Afghanistan and operate in other parts of the world, including North Africa and South Asia. ISIL gained prominence, when in early 2014 it drove Iraqi government forces out of key cities in its Western Iraq offensive, followed by the capture of Mosul and the Sinjar massacre, almost causing a collapse of the Iraqi government and prompting a renewal of US military action in Iraq. In Syria, the group has conducted ground attacks on both government forces and rebel factions. The number of fighters the group commands in Iraq and Syria, was estimated by the CIA at 31,000, with foreign fighters accounting for around two thirds, while ISIL leaders claim 40,000 fighters, with the majority being Iraqi and Syrian nationals.

EXCLUSIVE: VICE News Meets Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/1wT03Bi
Last summer, the group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) swept from Syria into northern Iraq, routing Iraqi security forces and seizing the city of Mosul. Soon afterward, the group declared the establishment of a dubious "caliphate" in the area it controls and rebranded itself the Islamic State. With Iraq's army weakened and radical militants advancing on Baghdad, the country's Iran-backed Shia militias — which have their own history of sectarian abuses — fought back, halting the Islamic State's progress.
The militias have successfully combated Islamic State fighters on the ground with the assistance of air strikes from a US-led military coalition. But their growing influence within Iraq's government amid accusations that they have harmed Sunnis in areas that they control has led many to fear that the militias threaten the country's fragile sectarian and political balance.
VICE News traveled to Iraq in December to witness firsthand how Shia militias are taking the fight to the Islamic State, and to document the fallout of their controversial rise to power.

In the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Saddam Hussein, the man who ruled the country with an iron fist, was captured. He was then executed by the new Iraqi government. However despite what most people believe, taking out Saddam wasn't the problem, taking out his political party - was. In June 2003, the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority of Iraq banned the Iraqi Ba'ath party and all its members. This was the most ill-conceived decision in the whole invasion of Iraq affair, as it completely upset the fragile balance of power that existed in the Middle East.
With this ban, every public sector employee affiliated with the Ba'ath Party was removed from position, and was banned from any future employment in the public sector. But in a totalitarian state as Saddam’s Iraq, being a member of the Ba’ath Party was more a necessity than a choice. It’s like saying that the Soviet Communist Party and its members should have been banned from the public sector when the USSR collapsed. Following the prohibition of Ba’athists from the public sector, thousands of experienced people were excluded from participating in the new government, people such as doctors, professors, bureaucrats, etc. However, perhaps the most important change was that the ban effectively dismantled the Iraqi military and security apparatus, because everyone involved was a member of the Ba’ath Party. Back then the US thought that this was necessary to create a new Iraqi government from scratch. But what it really did was create a void of power; a void that was quickly filled by Iraq’s Shia Muslim majority, with strong support and coordination from Iran. So what really happened was that the US attacked and occupied Iraq, passed legislation, and then immidiately lost the country from right under its nose to Iran. We discussed the rise of Iranian geopolitics and more in a previous CaspianReport.

The "Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), which is the resulting entity from the merger of al-Qaeda in Iraq and Syria, is seen in this video intercepting three trucks in Iraq heading to Syria. The three truck drivers, one of whom is from Tartous, are then questioned whether they're Sunnis or Shiites (Shias). Then the hardline Wahhabi jihadist proceeds to ask them about the number of kneelings a Muslim is supposed to perform at dawn, noon, and evening prayers. After they apparently failed in answering correctly, they are taken and shot execution-style by the jihadists who, as usual, scream "Allahu Akbar!" with jubilation. The video ends with a statement threatening the "Armies of the Cross in Dabiq" to be burnt by the fire whose spark was ignited in Iraq. Dabiq is a town near Aleppo where the battle of Marj Dabiq took place on August 24, 1516, and it ended up in a decisive victory of the Ottoman Empire over the Mamluk Sultanate.

The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state.
Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings.

Face of Terror: Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) - ISIL Terrorists
Everyone who is not us is the enemy and should be branded as infidel. This seems to be the prevailing ideology of the extreme Takfiri terrorists known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Their aim is said to be the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate. Shias, Christians, Sunnis, Yazidies, and whomsoever who dares to question them or raise his voice of dissent are persecuted under their highly distorted version of Islamic Sharia. Gruesome beheadings, crucifixions and mass executions are openly carried out under their iconic black flag which is more like a modern day equivalent of a Jolly Roger. At times, it seems like their victims are whoever who is unlucky enough to be in their path during their killing sprees. And yet they know how to manipulate social media and have succeeded in brainwashing some to join them in their “fight for justice”.
To learn who these people are, what they are fighting for, and who funds them, PRESS TV goes deep into their camps and brings you face to face interviews and exclusive footage. Many of those who were initially infatuated by the group’s promise of justice seem to be horrified and utterly disillusioned today.

On August 8, nearly three years after the United States pulled out of Iraq, President Barack Obama ordered airstrikes to commence on Islamic State positions in northern Iraq, as the group’s fighters advanced towards the Kurdish capital of Erbil. For six weeks prior to the strikes the Islamic State made stunning gains within Iraq, effectively dismantling the border with Syria and defeating the Iraqi army with little in the way to stop them.
In the final installment of VICE News’ unprecedented look inside the Islamic State, reporter Medyan Dairieh journeys 200 miles from the the group’s power base in the Syrian city of Raqqa to the border with Iraq. There, after defeating the Iraqi army manning the checkpoint, Islamic State fighters work further to bulldoze the border.
As they clear apart a barrier that divided Iraq and Syria, Islamic State fighters declare an end of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, a nearly 100-year-old pact between France and Britain that divided up the Middle East. For now, that area between Iraq and Syria is part of a new territory: the Islamic State.

The Dáesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) (ISIL; Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS, /ˈaɪsɨs/), the Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham,[28] or simply Islamic State (IS),[29] is a Wahhabi/Salafi jihadist extremist militant group, self-proclaimed to be a caliphate and Islamic state. It is led by and mainly composed of Sunni Arabs from Iraq and Syria. As of March 2015, it has control over territory occupied by 10 million people in Iraq and Syria, and through loyal local groups, has control over small areas of Libya, Nigeria and Afghanistan. The group also operates or has affiliates in other parts of the world, including North Africa and South Asia.[30][31][32][33][34][35]
The group is known in Arabic as ad-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah fī 'l-ʿIrāq wa-sh-Shām, leading to the acronym Da'ish or Daesh (داعش, Arabic pronunciation: [ˈdaːʕiʃ]),[36][37] the Arabic equivalent of "ISIL". On 29 June 2014, the group proclaimed itself to be a worldwide caliphate, with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi being named its caliph, and renamed itself ad-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah (الدولة الإسلامية, "Islamic State" (IS)). As a caliphate, it claims religious, political and military authority over all Muslims worldwide, and that "the legality of all emirates, groups, states, and organisations, becomes null by the expansion of the khilāfah's [caliphate's] authority and arrival of its troops to their areas".[28][38][39][40] The United Nations has held ISIL responsible for human rights abuses and war crimes, and Amnesty International has reported ethnic cleansing by the group on a "historic scale". The group has been designated a terrorist organisation by the United Nations, the European Union and member states, the United States, India, Indonesia, Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Syria and other countries. Over 60 countries are directly or indirectly waging war against ISIL.
The group originated as Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad in 1999, which pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda in 2004. The group participated in the Iraqi insurgency that followed the March 2003 invasion of Iraq by Western forces. In January 2006, it joined other Sunni insurgent groups to form the Mujahideen Shura Council, which proclaimed the formation of the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) in October 2006. After the Syrian Civil War began in March 2011, the ISI, under the leadership of al-Baghdadi, sent delegates into Syria in August 2011. These fighters named themselves Jabhat an-Nuṣrah li-Ahli ash-Shām—al-Nusra Front—and established a large presence in Sunni-majority areas of Syria, within the governorates of Ar-Raqqah, Idlib, Deir ez-Zor, and Aleppo. In April 2013, al-Baghdadi announced the merger of the ISI with al-Nusra Front and that the name of the reunited group was now the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). However, Abu Mohammad al-Julani and Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leaders of al-Nusra and al-Qaeda respectively, rejected the merger. After an eight-month power struggle, al-Qaeda cut all ties with ISIL on 3 February 2014, citing its failure to consult and "notorious intransigence". In Syria, the group has conducted ground attacks on both government forces and rebel factions in the Syrian Civil War. The group gained prominence after it drove Iraqi government forces out of key cities in western Iraq in an offensive initiated in early 2014. Iraq's territorial loss almost caused a collapse of the Iraqi government and prompted a renewal of US military action in Iraq

Iraqi security forces recaptured a large part of the city of Ramadi this week in one of their most significant military victories over the Islamic State (IS) to date.
Backed by warplanes from the US-led coalition, Baghdad's troops have been fighting to secure territory around Ramadi, the capital of Iraq’s vast western province of Anbar, since it fell to IS in May.
VICE News embedded with Iraq’s Special Operations Forces, also known as the Golden Division, who have been leading operations to recapture the city.

The French military has released video showing French fighter jets taking off from Al Dhafra base, UAE and carrying out strikes against the militant Islamic State group.
French fighter jets struck against the militant Islamic State group on Friday morning.
Two Rafale fighter jets accompanied by support planes targetted a logistics depot in northern Iraq that had been overrun by the militants.
Four laser-guided bombs struck the Iraqi military base, and hit a munitions and fuel depot, according to a French military official.
The attack made France the first foreign country to publicly add military muscle to United States airstrikes against the terrorist group, which has drawn criticism around the world and in a unanimous UN Security Council resolution for its barbarity.
French President Francois Hollande said the target was "entirely destroyed." Dozens of extremist fighters were also killed in the four strikes, according to Iraq's military spokesman.

Days before the US launched airstrikes on Tikrit in late March, VICE News traveled to the front lines of the northern Iraqi city, where Iraqi government forces and volunteer militiamen are continuing to battle the so-called Islamic State militant group.
The presence of the volunteer militiamen Hashd al Shaabi, also known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, has raised fears among civilians of retributive attacks. VICE News spoke to refugees from Tikrit who were detained while attempting to flee the fighting, some of whom accused Hashd al Shaabi of carrying out abductions, forced conscription, and looting.

The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced their intention to reestablish the caliphate and declared their leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.
Flush with cash and US weapons seized during recent advances in Iraq, the Islamic State’s expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
Elsewhere in territory it has held for some time, the Islamic State has gone about consolidating power and setting up a government dictated by Sharia law. While the world may not recognize the Islamic State, in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the group is already in the process of building a functioning regime.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings. In part one, Dairieh heads to the frontline in Raqqa, where Islamic State fighters are laying siege to the Syrian Army’s division 17 base.

It's a city where entire districts have been emptied of people and where ancient sites have been systematically destroyed. Now, a year after Iraq's second city Mosul was captured by the militant group calling themselves Islamic State, we have an exclusive and unique investigation into how deeply entrenched the terror group is in the city. The BBC looks at how the militants control most aspects of daily life, including dress codes and schools, which residents say are used to indoctrinate children. And as this report shows, many are living in fear of being punished according to the group's extreme interpretation of Islamic law.

There is the option to reach to Kurdistan by flying to Turkey: - Purchase a ticket to Diyarbakir (the nearest large city to the Turkish / Iraqi Kurdistan border). While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings.

Erbil International Airport (IATA: EBL, ICAO: ORER), is the main airport of Erbil city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Erbil International Airport is centrally located on the Silk Road of the Airways. Following the liberation of Iraq in 2003, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) decided to transform Erbil's former military base into a modern civil aviation airport to serve as a major gateway to the world. Erbil International Airport (EIA) officially opened on July 7, 2005, and it welcomed its first IATA carrier on 11th December 2006. The KRG has enacted favorable rules to attract foreign investors and to help citizens of the Kurdistan Region in exile return home. Domestic traffic, as well as regional traffic throughout the expansive Middle East, is growing. Kurdistan's great natural resources of oil, natural gas and other minerals are creating a flourishing and rapidly growing business environment. Kurdistan is previously in exile are returning, bringing with them connections to other lands. There is an ever stronger need for efficient air transport, for passengers as well as cargo. The Erbil area has a stable water supply, and is surrounded by scenic and accessible wilderness lands, with greenery, clean streams, waterfalls and caves. This stands in stark contrast to other Middle Eastern destinations, and visitors will fuel an important tourism industry in Kurdistan. These are some of the reasons that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and EIA have constructed and equipped an airport for the future, with capacity for three million passengers, and one of the world's longest runways, designed to accommodate the Airbus A380 and cargo aircraft of that class. The airport is the culmination of the vision and strategy put in place in 2003.

The bomb blasts in Karbala and Baghdad during the Shia Muslim commemoration of Ashura did more than rock the fragile stability of Iraq - they were a signal to the new power base in the country, the Shias, that their mosques, their shrines and their festivals will be targeted by extremists.
For the first time in three decades, Iraqi Shias were able to mark Ashura - the commemoration of the the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, grandson of the Prophet Mohammed - openly in Karbala.
Cameras followed Shia pilgrims from the UK, USA and Iraq as they wrestled with the decision to travel to Karbala and mark the first free Ashura in three decades.
The 90-minute film records pilgrims' decisions, Ashura itself and the intense emotions of the Shia mourning of Hussain's death. It includes footage of the bombings and their aftermath.

Great Mosque of Samarra, Iraq
Once the largest mosque in the world, built in the 9th century on the Tigris River north of Baghdad. The mosque is famous for the Malwiya Tower, a 52-meter minaret with spiraling ramps for worshipers to climb. Among Iraq's most important sites, it even featured on banknotes. The site was bombed in 2005, in an insurgent attack on a NATO position, destroying the top of the minaret and surrounding walls.
The Buddhas of Bamyan, Afghanistan
The most spectacular legacy of Buddhism in the war-torn country, among the tallest standing Buddhas in the world -- the larger at 53 meters, the other 35 -- had survived over 1,500 years since being carved out of sandstone. The Taliban considered the monuments idolatrous and destroyed them with dynamite.
The ancient city of Bosra, Syria
Continually inhabited for 2,500 years, and became the capital of the Romans' Arabian empire. The centerpiece is a magnificent Roman theater dating back to the second century that survived intact until the current conflict. Archaeologists have revealed the site is now severely damaged from mortar shelling.
Norias of Hama, Syria
These 20-meter wide water wheels were first documented in the 5th century, representing an ingenious early irrigation system. Seventeen of the wooden norias (a machine for lifting water into an aqueduct) survived to present day and became Hama's primary tourist attraction, noted for their groaning sounds as they turned. Heritage expertsdocumented several wheels being burned by fighters in 2014.
Citadel of Aleppo, Syria
The fortress spans at least four millennia, from the days of Alexander the Great, through Roman, Mongol, and Ottoman rule. The site has barely changed since the 16th century and is one of Syria's most popular World Heritage sites. The citadel has been used as an army base in recent fighting and several of its historic buildings have been destroyed.
Deir Ez-zor bridge, Syria
This French-built suspension bridge was a popular pedestrian crossing and vantage point for its views of the Euphrates River. It became a key supply line in a battle for the city, and collapsed under shelling. Deir Ez-zor's Siyasiyeh Bridge was also destroyed.
Crac des Chevaliers, Syria
The Crusader castle from the 11th century survived centuries of battles and natural disasters, becoming a World Heritage site in 2006 along with the adjacent castle of Qal'at Salah El-Din. The walls were severely damaged by regime airstrikes and artillery in 2013, and rebels took positions within it.

BASRA, IRAQ — The theft of dangerous radioactive material from a southern Iraqi city has raised security concerns worldwide, with officials fearing it could be used as a weapon by the Islamic State.
Reuters reports that Iraq is searching for radioactive material previously stored in a storage facility in Basra.
The highly dangerous material was stored in a laptop-sized case and went missing in November last year. The case contained 10 grams of Ir-192, close proximity to which could cause permanent injury in minutes and death in a matter of hours or days.
Officials fear the iridium was stolen and could be combined with conventional explosives to create a dirty bomb.
Unlike nuclear weapons, which trigger a powerful explosion, a dirty bomb generates a much smaller blast but can contaminate an area with radiation.
The U.S. State Department is aware of the reports, but said there have been no signs that ISIS or any other militant groups are in possession of the iridium.

Islamic State reportedly launched a chemical attack on a unit of Kurdish self-defense close to Sinjar in northern Iraq. Up to 30 Kurdish fighters were affected by what is believed to be mortar shells loaded with a chemical substance, presumably chlorine.
Medical officials at Dohuk hospital saw nine Kurdish fighters admitted to their facility with symptoms of heavy chemical-weapons poisoning last Friday, such as corrosive burns of the upper respiratory tract, vomiting and itching, the Associated Press reports.
Director of Dohuk hospital, Dr Afrasiab Mussa Yones said further analysis is necessary, but the initial symptoms suggest chlorine had been used. Samples taken from the troops' clothes would be sent for analysis, he said.
Kurdish military Colonel Lukhman Kulli Ibrahim told AP that following the mortar attack he lost consciousness. When he came to, he felt his chest and eyes burning.
Earlier this week, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) acknowledged that Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL) used mustard gas on Kurdish forces in Iraq last August. Lab tests came back positive for the substance.

The world has stood in shock at horrors perpetrated by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in its quest to establish a Sunni caliphate. While journalists report the onset of “ethnic cleansing on a historic scale,” and government analysts scramble to understand its geopolitical implications, social scientists have largely failed to adequately tackle the subject. This, despite our wealth of historical knowledge about the Middle East, and established theories on the origins and patterns of sectarian violence in post-transition regimes.
While no single existing theory can hope to explain the sudden emergence of the ISIS threat, the phenomenon is unlikely a basket case without analytical comparisons. My research therefore seeks to ask: what can existing social science models reveal about the rise of ISIS? And in turn, what can the rise of ISIS tell us about the accuracy of existing theories?

Samples Confirm ISIS Used Mustard Gas In Iraq, Diplomat Says
Islamic State group militants attacked Kurdish forces in Iraq with mustard gas last year, in the first known use of chemical weapons in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein, a diplomat said, after tests by the global chemical arms watchdog. A source at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirmed that laboratory tests had come back positive for the sulfur mustard, after about 35 Kurdish troops were sickened on the battlefield last August.

According to an environment ministry document and seven security, environmental and provincial officials, Iraq is searching for "highly dangerous" radioactive material stolen last November. If acquired by Islamic State, it is feared that it could be used as a weapon. The material went missing from a storage facility near the southern city of Basra. The facility is owned by U.S. oilfield services company Weatherford. A spokesman for Iraq's environment ministry said he could not speak about the issue, due to concerns over national security. Weatherford representatives have declined requests for comment.

Nadia Murad, a 21-year-old Yazidi woman, was held as a sex slave for three months by Islamic State (IS) group jihadists in northern Iraq. She managed to escape her captors and has now found refuge in Germany. Murad recalled her horrific experience at the hands of the jihadists in an interview with FRANCE 24.
Nadia Murad recalled how in August 2014, IS group jihadists entered her village in northern Iraq and killed all of the men. Six of her brothers were murdered, as well as her mother. Like thousands of other women, Murad was sold as a sex slave.
Three months later, she managed to escape and eventually found refuge in Germany. She urges the world to do more about the plight of her community and help the thousands of women still held as slaves by Islamic State jihadists.
"These criminals must be brought to justice," she told FRANCE 24's Cyril Vanier.

Intel Chief comes clean, says Obama funded pre-ISIS groups AND KNEW IT

Michael Flynn, the former director of Obama’s Defense Intelligence Agency, said he warned the Obama administration in 2012 that the groups they were funding in Syria were indeed Islamic jihadists. Not only that, but they warned that these jihadist groups wanted to form a “Salafist principality in eastern Syria” and that “ISI (Islamic State of Iraq) could declare an Islamic State.” All this is bolstered by a 2012 document from his agency that’s recently been declassified via a FOIA by Judicial Watch.
Not only do they warn that the jihadi groups in Syria may want to form a principality, they specifically cite that ISI (Islamic State of Iraq) could unify with other jihadi groups and declare an Islamic State!
And all of this was in 2012. Since then we’ve continued to fund and train these groups, all the while Obama knew exactly who they were and what they were capable of – J.V. my foot!
Note that Flynn says he’s been in the intel business for a long time and he still can’t make sense out of what Obama is really doing here.
Well, perhaps it would make more sense if he stopped believing the lies that Obama is a Christian and not a Muslim. Obama is obviously working with Turkey to take out Assad and help bring forth Erdogan’s dream, the New Ottoman Turkey!
Turkey wanted ISIS to exist in the first place and that’s why Obama has done very little to destroy or even degrade them. It’s all about taking out Assad and creating the coming Ottoman caliphate.
Look, even if this is not clear to you, any rational person must admit that this 2012 document and admission by Flynn raises serious questions about why we pulled out of Iraq and what we’ve been doing in Syria and Iraq, then and now.
And let’s not forget about Obama freeing Iran from sanctions to help grow itself and the region with new import/export partnerships, all under the guise of halting their nuclear weapons program.
Ugh.

As bombs start dropping in Syria and Iraq, the world is once again being asked to cower in fear of a shadowy terror group that most people hadn't heard of just a few months ago. But even the most cursory examination of ISIS's past, its connections, and the actors populating it reveal a very different story than the one we are being asked to believe in. Fake terrorists. Phil Campion, a former SAS soldier and a veteran of just about every major conflict zone in the world, travels to the front line in Syria and Iraq to meet the men and women taking the fight to Islamic State.
Known as 'Big Phil', he filmed for Sky with both the YPG and Kurdish Peshmerga, observing their war against a well-equipped and motivated enemy.
He experienced some of the worst battles of his life while embedded with the Kurds and met the all-female fighting units of the YPJ, described as a secret weapon of the war.

Islamic State stands with al-Qaeda as one of the most dangerous terrorist groups, after its gains in Syria and Iraq.
Under its former name Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis), it was formed in April 2013, growing out of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI).
It has since been disavowed by al-Qaeda, but has become one of the main jihadist groups fighting government forces in Syria and Iraq.
Its precise size is unclear but it is thought to include thousands of fighters, including many foreign jihadists.
The organisation is led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Little is known about him, but it is believed he was born in Samarra, north of Baghdad, in 1971 and joined the insurgency that erupted in Iraq soon after the 2003 US-led invasion.
In 2010 he emerged as the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, one of the groups that later became Isis.
The group has seen considerable military success. In March 2013, it took over the Syrian city of Raqqa - the first provincial capital to fall under rebel control. In January 2014, it capitalised on growing tension between Iraq's Sunni minority and Shia-led government by taking control of the predominantly Sunni city of Fallujah, in the western province of Anbar.

A year after the Islamic State's lightning conquest of Iraq's second-largest city of Mosul, the poorly-trained and equipped Kurdish peshmerga forces are the international coalition's only reliable boots on the ground in northern Iraq.
The Pentagon's hopes of recapturing the city by spring 2015 have been dashed by the military failures of the Iraqi Army further south, leaving the peshmerga to defend a 600-mile long frontline almost encircling Mosul, fending off constant Islamic State (IS) assaults with insufficient supplies of ammunition and modern weapons.
For one month, VICE News embedded with the peshmerga fighters on the Mosul frontline, gaining an insight into the coalition's faltering war against IS through the eyes of the Kurdish volunteers bearing the brunt of the fighting.

Raising its black flag over the rugged mountainous regions of Afghanistan, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has emerged as a new threat to the war-ravaged country as it battles the Taliban for supremacy.
Employing violence and brutality used by the group in Syria and Iraq, Wilayat Khorasan, (the ancient name ISIL has chosen for the region made up of Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of neighbouring countries), has emerged in seven different areas and vowed to step up operations, where the veteran fighters, the Taliban, once held sway.
Fighting to reconstitute the historical Khorasan into the so-called 'Caliphate' of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the group says it has grand plans for the region, starting with uprooting the Taliban and the government of President Ashraf Ghani.
Causing friction with the regional and overall leadership of the Taliban, armed battles have increased over the past few months with dozens of Taliban fighters killed in the clashes, most notably in the Taliban stronghold of Nangarhar province.
ISIL's local chapter has also managed to attract dozens of fighters from the Taliban's ranks into its fold, while foreign fighters unable to make it to Syria and Iraq have thronged to the group's territory.
In ISIL and the Taliban we look at the group's growing popularity, how it made steady inroads into the country and the threat it poses for the future of Afghanistan.
We gain exclusive access to ISIL's central leadership, and meet children as young as 5-years-old being trained to fight and dedicate their lives to the 'Caliphate'.

ISIL has been truly devastating to those it comes in contact with and bloody to those under its control. Its sudden rise and expansion in 2014 has perplexed many. It has humiliated its enemies, including those in Damascus, Baghdad, Tehran and Washington. Armed with extensive weaponry, boasting an international fighting force and adept in the art of digital media propaganda, the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has become the de facto authority across an area the size of the United Kingdom. This two-part series peels back the rhetoric to examine how a volunteer organization managed to rise up from the ashes of post-invasion Iraq and defeat standing armies many times its size and capacity. How did it begin? How did it grow so astonishingly quickly? And how is it being used by global and regional powers to change the geopolitical map of the Middle East? With critical testimony from informed insiders and experts from across three continents, as well as original footage from Syria and Iraq, this series mixes documentary and discussion to unravel the interweaving nexus of events and alliances, at once aligned and conflicting, that have given rise to the world’s most notorious, and powerful, insurgent group.

About the Speech:
The rise and expansion of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) represents a major turning point in Middle East politics. ISIS now controls territory in the heart of the Middle East roughly the size of Great Britain and has morphed into a global security problem. The United States is currently mobilising the international community to confront the Islamic State, in what U.S President Barack Obama claims is just the start of a “long term campaign” of military re-engagement in the Arab-Islamic world. Against this backdrop, Dr. Hashemi explored some of the background issues related to the rise and expansion of ISIS and asked how the international community should respond.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Nader Hashemi is the Director of the Center for Middle East Studies and an Associate Professor of Middle East and Islamic Politics at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He obtained his doctorate from the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto and previously was an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern University and a Visiting Assistant Professor at the UCLA Global Institute. He is the author of Islam, Secularism and Liberal Democracy: Toward a Democratic Theory for Muslim Societies and co-editor of The People Reloaded: The Green Movement and the Struggle for Iran’s Future and most recently The Syria Dilemma. His writings have appeared in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, among others.
