Point To Point Navigation Using The RMI & VOR/DME | AviaTube Aviation Briefings

Point to point navigation demonstrated in this video using an RMI and DME. Rarely used, this method will aid you into mentally establishing a heading that will bring you to a distance and radial from a VOR/DME. In this example you are on the 180° radial at 20nm DME. You require to navigate to the 090° radial at 10nm DME. Your aircraft is situated at the tail of the yellow VOR needle on the RMI. You imagine the compass card has a radius scale (from its centre to it's perimeter), in nm of say, 20nm (it can be equal to or greater than your distance from the station). You then draw a line or put your pen/pencil up to the RMI and start at the tail of the needle and point to the distance inside the scale to which you calculated that you need to arrive at, in this case 10nm on the 090°R. From this line you are holding you then move the line/your pen/pencil parallel so it cuts through the centre of the RMI and points to your new heading of 030°. Every few minutes you should recalculate your heading by repeating the above method (don't forget your distance and therefore scale is reducing). The DME may read less than your desired outcome as you head towards the station however, as you pass abeam you are then once again moving away from the station and arriving at your desired distance. Generally this is accurate to within 1-2nm.
