A short but pivotal sequence from "Belphegor, ou le Fantome du Louvre", the wildly popular French TV miniseries (directed by Claude Barma) which, when first aired in 1965, generated one of the very first case of mass hysteria in the history of TV.
Besides the plot itself, who nailed for five nights the French viewers to their TV screen, what made "Belphegor" an instant phenomenon (and the subject of heated debate) was the fearsome appearer of Belphegor itself. Reportedly, millions of French (then Italian, then German) kids started having nightmares, with more of few cases of genuine psychosis.
While normally claims of such deep effect of TV shows on people psyche are dubious (or exaggerated), "Belphegor" was the real thing. In fact, it's very easy, for anyone born in the early 60's in Western Europe, to identify "fear" in its most primal form with the tall, veiled figure of the "Phantom of the Louvre".
All this brouhaha unfortunately tends to make people forget about the brilliance of the miniseries itself, a (rare) instance of mystery, horror, vague scifi and crime story threads well mixed all together in the same unsettling plot. Barma was a specialist of well crafted TV narrative, and in 1971 he was responsible for another landmark of great TV (and not cinema passing for great TV!): "Le Rois Maudites" (The Cursed Kings), the story of the bloody demise of the royal house of Capet (not to be confused with the dreadful 2004 remake, whose only notable features were Philippe Druillet scenery)
1965 "Belphegor" (there was also an interesting silent movie version of the same story done in 1927) had also the additional bonus of a terrific cast, whose most notable element was Juliette Greco, the epitome of 60's cool (singer, actress, writer and for a while lover of Jean Paul Sartre). The interesting thing was that Greco had absolutely no problem looking sophisticate and at the same time vulnerable and haunted, and she definitely gave the convoluted (but actually not nonsensical) storyline an added layer of depth. Supporting cast was very solid too, with the suave but at the same time hardened René Dary as Commissioner Ménardier, handsome Yves Renier as the nominal hero of the story, André Bellegarde, and the very sinister François Chaumette as Boris Williams.
In 2000 Belphergor was remade as a full feature movie starrieng Sophie Marceau, but that one is best avoided. As they say, they don't do it like this any more, and the huge quality gap between the 1965 and the 2000 version is one of the rare true instances of this cliché.
There are various video release of "Belphegor", but the best one is from Yamato Video (Italy) and includes the 1927 version, Arthur Bernaude's novel who originated the story (a good read) and of course the full 1965 version, restored and subtitled.

中学の時に映画冊子みたいなものに紹介されていたのをきっかけに知りえました。で、大学の時にビデオを借りて観たのが初めてだったか、高校の時に夜中にテレビで放映されていたのを観たのが初めてだったのかは忘れました。
ジャック・ベッケルが監督で、ジャン・ギャバン、ジャンヌ・モロー、リノ・ヴァンチュラと錚々たる俳優が出てますね。しかしリノ・ヴァンチュラが元プロレスラーだったとは知りませんでしたね～。

Michel Dens
Michel Dens (22 June 1911, Roubaix – 19 December 2000, Paris) was a French baritone, particularly associated with the French repertory, both opera and operetta.
Born Maurice Marcel, the son of a journalist, he studied at the Academy of Music in Roubaix. He made his debut at the Opéra de Lille, as Wagner in Gounod's Faust, in 1934, and remained there as a member until 1936. Thereafter he sang at the Opera Houses of Bordeaux, Grenoble, Toulouse and Marseille. In 1943, he was heard at the Monte Carlo Opera as Escamillo, Valentin, and the Count in Le nozze di Figaro.
After the Second World War, he began a very successful career at the Opéra-Comique and the Palais Garnier in Paris. His roles at the Opéra-Comique included; Figaro, Lescaut, Zurga, Frédéric, Ourrias, Dapertutto, Alfio, Marcello, Scarpia, et al., he took part there in the creation of Emmanuel Bondeville's Madame Bovary, on 1 June 1951.
His debut role at the Opéra in 1947 was in the title role of Rigoletto, he also sang there as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Hérode in Hérodiade, Athanaël in Thais, et al. He appeared with success at the Aix-en-Provence Festival and at most of the great Opera Houses of France.

Pierre Fresnay
Pierre Fresnay (4 April 1897, Paris, France – 9 January 1975) was a French stage and film actor.
Born Pierre Jules Louis Laudenbach, he was encouraged by his uncle, actor Claude Garry, to pursue a career in theater and film. During the 1920s, Fresnay appeared in many popular stage productions, most notably in the title role of Marcel Pagnol’s Marius (1929), which ran for over 500 performances. His first great screen role was as Marius in the 1931 film adaptation of the play of the same name. He replayed the role in the next two parts of Marcel Pagnol's Marseilles Trilogy, Fanny (1932) and César (1936).
He appeared in more than sixty films, eight of which were with Yvonne Printemps, with whom he lived since 1934. In that same year, he appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's first version of The Man Who Knew Too Much. In 1937 he portrayed the aristocratic French military officer Captain de Boeldieu in Jean Renoir's masterpiece La Grande Illusion.
In 1947 he played Vincent de Paul (namesake of the Vincent de Paul Society) in Monsieur Vincent, for which he won the Coupe Volpi for best actor at the Venice Film Festival. He also portrayed Nobel Peace Prize laureate Albert Schweitzer in Il est minuit, Docteur Schweitzer (1952).

Mado Robin
Madeleine Marie Robin (French pronunciation: [madlɛn maʁi mado ʁobɛ̃]; 29 December 1918 – 10 December 1960), generally known as Mado Robin, was a French coloratura soprano. She was noted for her extreme range.
Early life
Robin was born in Yzeures-sur-Creuse, Touraine, where she owned the Château des Vallées.
Career
A star of television and radio in the 1950s, she was well known in France. Among her roles were Lakmé, which she recorded for Decca Records in 1952 (with Georges Sébastian conducting), Lucia di Lammermoor, Olympia in The Tales of Hoffmann, Gilda in Rigoletto, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, and Leïla in Les pêcheurs de perles. In 1954, she went to San Francisco to sing Lucia and Gilda, and had a successful tour of the Soviet Union with sixteen concerts over a few weeks.
Personal life
At age 17, she married Alan Smith, an Englishman, who died shortly after World War II in a car crash. She had one daughter.
Death and honors
Robin died in Paris in 1960 from cancer (some sources state liver cancer, others leukaemia) a few days before the 1500th performance of Lakmé at the Opéra-Comique, which had organized the event for her birthday.

Yvonne Printemps
Yvonne Printemps (French: [pʁɛ̃tɑ̃]; 25 July 1894 – 19 January 1977) was a French singer and actress who achieved stardom on stage and screen in France and internationally.
Printemps went on the stage in Paris at the age of 12, and at 21 she was singled out by the actor, director and playwright Sacha Guitry as a leading lady. In 1919 they were married, and worked closely together until 1932, when they divorced. Printemps never remarried, but had a personal and professional partnership with the actor Pierre Fresnay which lasted until his death in 1975.
As a performer, Printemps was famed for the quality of her singing voice and for her personal charm. Among those who composed for her were André Messager, Reynaldo Hahn, Noël Coward and Francis Poulenc. Her voice could have led her to an operatic career, but guided by Guitry she concentrated on operette and other types of musical show, along with non-musical plays and films. In addition to her many successes in Paris she appeared to great acclaim in the West End of London, and on Broadway in New York.

A short but pivotal sequence from "Belphegor, ou le Fantome du Louvre", the wildly popular French TV miniseries (directed by Claude Barma) which, when first aired in 1965, generated one of the very first case of mass hysteria in the history of TV.
Besides the plot itself, who nailed for five nights the French viewers to their TV screen, what made "Belphegor" an instant phenomenon (and the subject of heated debate) was the fearsome appearer of Belphegor itself. Reportedly, millions of French (then Italian, then German) kids started having nightmares, with more of few cases of genuine psychosis.
While normally claims of such deep effect of TV shows on people psyche are dubious (or exaggerated), "Belphegor" was the real thing. In fact, it's very easy, for anyone born in the early 60's in Western Europe, to identify "fear" in its most primal form with the tall, veiled figure of the "Phantom of the Louvre".
All this brouhaha unfortunately tends to make people forget about the brilliance of the miniseries itself, a (rare) instance of mystery, horror, vague scifi and crime story threads well mixed all together in the same unsettling plot. Barma was a specialist of well crafted TV narrative, and in 1971 he was responsible for another landmark of great TV (and not cinema passing for great TV!): "Le Rois Maudites" (The Cursed Kings), the story of the bloody demise of the royal house of Capet (not to be confused with the dreadful 2004 remake, whose only notable features were Philippe Druillet scenery)

A short but pivotal sequence from "Belphegor, ou le Fantome du Louvre", the wildly popular French TV miniseries (directed by Claude Barma) which, when first aired in 1965, generated one of the very first case of mass hysteria in the history of TV.
Besides the plot itself, who nailed for five nights the French viewers to their TV screen, what made "Belphegor" an instant phenomenon (and the subject of heated debate) was the fearsome appearer of Belphegor itself. Reportedly, millions of French (then Italian, then German) kids started having nightmares, with more of few cases of genuine psychosis.
While normally claims of such deep effect of TV shows on people psyche are dubious (or exaggerated), "Belphegor" was the real thing. In fact, it's very easy, for anyone born in the early 60's in Western Europe, to identify "fear" in its most primal form with the tall, veiled figure of the "Phantom of the Louvre".
All this brouhaha unfortunately tends to make people forget about the brilliance of the miniseries itself, a (rare) instance of mystery, horror, vague scifi and crime story threads well mixed all together in the same unsettling plot. Barma was a specialist of well crafted TV narrative, and in 1971 he was responsible for another landmark of great TV (and not cinema passing for great TV!): "Le Rois Maudites" (The Cursed Kings), the story of the bloody demise of the royal house of Capet (not to be confused with the dreadful 2004 remake, whose only notable features were Philippe Druillet scenery)

Představení vizí a možností společností patřících do skupiny GA Energo technik v kontextu holdingu OMEXOM. Jožo Ráž podpořil aukci pro dětské centrum Chovánek. Výtěžek byl 625 tisíc korun. Ledová vína s vlastnoručním podpisem frontmana skupiny Elán Jožo Ráže a obrazy výtvarnice Dany Raunerové – taková byla nabídka předmětů k dražbě konané ve prospěch brněnského Chovánku – dětského centra rodinného typu. Představení vizí a možností společností patřících do skupiny GA Energo technik v kontextu holdingu OMEXOM.
Jožo Ráž podpořil aukci pro dětské centrum Chovánek. Výtěžek byl 625 tisíc korun.
Ledová vína s vlastnoručním podpisem frontmana skupiny Elán Jožo Ráže a obrazy výtvarnice Dany Raunerové – taková byla nabídka předmětů k dražbě konané ve prospěch brněnského Chovánku – dětského centra rodinného typu. Atraktivitu aukce ještě zvyšovala osobní účast Jožo Ráže a skupiny Elán. Dražbu připravila elektromontážní společnost GA Energo technik, která v Brně provozuje jednu ze svých poboček.
Dětské centrum Chovánek pečuje o děti od narození do tří let, včetně dětí s těžkým zdravotním postižením. Jeho součástí je i Zařízení pro děti vyžadující okamžitou pomoc ve věku od narození do 18 let. Zároveň nabízí další služby, kterými jsou např. rehabilitační péče, respitní pobyty, komplexní poradenská péče pro rodiče (biologické i adoptivní) a pěstouny. Také poskytuje ubytování a pomoc matkám v těžké životní situaci. Centrum aktuálně pečuje o 74 dětí. „Naším zřizovatelem je Statutární město Brno, přesto jsou sponzorské dary a jiná finanční i materiální pomoc pro nás velmi důležité a jsme za ně vděčni. Umožňují nám realizovat řadu projektů nad rámec rozpočtu. Prostředky získanými z aukce splníme velký sen našich dětí, kterým je krytý zahradní bazén,“ popisuje ředitelka centra a dodává, že ji výsledná částka velmi příjemně překvapila.
Charitativní aukce byla vyvrcholením slavnostního večera uspořádaného u příležitosti oznámení dalšího rozvoje společnosti GA Energo technik a její slovenské dcery Omexom Slovensko. „Podpora sociálních aktivit zaměřených na péči o děti je již řadu let součástí naší firemní filosofie. Proto pravidelně finančně podporujeme v místě sídla naší centrály Dětské centrum Plzeň, jemuž jsme během osmileté spolupráce poskytli už téměř 4 miliony korun. Stejnou spolupráci bychom chtěli navázat ve všech jedenácti regionech, ve kterých sídlí naše pobočky,“ uzavřel generální ředitel společnosti GA Energo technik s.r.o.

Le docteur Jean Séverac et son épouse Hélène fêtent le vingtième anniversaire de leur mariage. Leur couple, en apparence, est uni, mais la réalité est tout autre. Hélène, en effet, est amoureuse d'un jeune médecin, Bernard Auburtin; son mari feint de ne rien connaître de cette liaison en dépit de lettres anonymes qui y font allusion. Un soir, Hélène avoue et demande le divorce à son mari, qui refuse toute idée de séparation. Le lendemain, Hélène rend visite à Auburtin pour le convaincre de quitter la ville avec elle. " Et ma situation, ma clientèle ? " objecte Bernard, d'abord réticent mais qui, dans la crainte d'un scandale, acquiesce enfin.
Ce matin-là se réunit le conseil d'administration de la Fondation Séverac - laboratoire de recherche sur les maladies infantiles que préside Jean Séverac - pour élire son directeur. Deux candidats sont en présence, dont Auburtin qui n'a aucune chance. Or, c'est lui qui est élu grâce au suffrage de Séverac pourtant hostile, jusqu'alors, à sa candidature. Hélène se précipite chez son amant pour hâter leur départ, prétextant que son mari l'a menacée de mort. Elle ne lui dit rien de sa nomination que vient lui annoncer Séverac, sûr du résultat de sa démarche; Auburtin choisira de rester, sacrifiant Hélène à sa carrière.
Marthe, la tante d'Hélène et de Jean, vieille fille acariâtre et méchante, se réjouit ouvertement du naufrage du couple Séverac. Elle est là lorsque Jean s'effondre, terrassé par un malaise, et, aussitôt, insinue que le whisky servi par Hélène en est la cause! En l'absence du docteur Jacquier, médecin des Séverac, Jean fait appeler Auburtin. Après le départ de celui-ci, qui ne s'explique pas la gravité de l'état du malade, Jean souffle perfidement à sa femme; "Tu le verras tous les jours".
La tante Marthe, de son côté, colporte une nouvelle rumeur; le couple adultère est en train d'assassiner ce pauvre Séverac ! " Encore un petit coup de pouce et c'est la fin " ira-t-elle jusqu'à dire à Auburtin, qui perd tous ses patients à cause des calomnies de cette vipère.
Le jeune docteur, qui suspecte Hélène, consulte son confrère Yvarne, expert en toxicologie; tous deux évoquent la probabilité d'un empoisonnement à l'arsenic. Jean, au plus bas, convoque Marthe et lui rend le paquet des lettres anonymes; "Ne mettez plus les pieds ici". Auburtin prévient alors le malade qu'on va l'emmener en clinique. " Là-bas, je suis sûr de vous guérir; ici, peut-être pas".
Peu avant l'arrivée de l'ambulance, Jean est mourant. Auburtin accuse Hélène de l'avoir tué. Avant de mourir, Jean avoue à sa femme qu'il a maquillé son suicide en meurtre pour perdre le couple adultère. Mais, pour sauver celle qu'il n'a cessé d'aimer, il a écrit une lettre au commissaire de police. Hélène lit cette lettre dans laquelle Jean déclare s'être suicidé, la brûle et téléphone à la police; "Je l'ai tué".

Deux candidats sont en présence, dont Auburtin qui n'a aucune chance. Or, c'est lui qui est élu grâce au suffrage de Séverac pourtant hostile, jusqu'alors, à sa candidature. Hélène se précipite chez son amant pour hâter leur départ, prétextant que son mari l'a menacée de mort. Elle ne lui dit rien de sa nomination que vient lui annoncer Séverac, sûr du résultat de sa démarche; Auburtin choisira de rester, sacrifiant Hélène à sa carrière.
Marthe, la tante d'Hélène et de Jean, vieille fille acariâtre et méchante, se réjouit ouvertement du naufrage du couple Séverac. Elle est là lorsque Jean s'effondre, terrassé par un malaise, et, aussitôt, insinue que le whisky servi par Hélène en est la cause! En l'absence du docteur Jacquier, médecin des Séverac, Jean fait appeler Auburtin. Après le départ de celui-ci, qui ne s'explique pas la gravité de l'état du malade, Jean souffle perfidement à sa femme; "Tu le verras tous les jours".
La tante Marthe, de son côté, colporte une nouvelle rumeur; le couple adultère est en train d'assassiner ce pauvre Séverac ! " Encore un petit coup de pouce et c'est la fin " ira-t-elle jusqu'à dire à Auburtin, qui perd tous ses patients à cause des calomnies de cette vipère.
Le jeune docteur, qui suspecte Hélène, consulte son confrère Yvarne, expert en toxicologie; tous deux évoquent la probabilité d'un empoisonnement à l'arsenic. Jean, au plus bas, convoque Marthe et lui rend le paquet des lettres anonymes; "Ne mettez plus les pieds ici". Auburtin prévient alors le malade qu'on va l'emmener en clinique. " Là-bas, je suis sûr de vous guérir; ici, peut-être pas".
Peu avant l'arrivée de l'ambulance, Jean est mourant. Auburtin accuse Hélène de l'avoir tué. Avant de mourir, Jean avoue à sa femme qu'il a maquillé son suicide en meurtre pour perdre le couple adultère. Mais, pour sauver celle qu'il n'a cessé d'aimer, il a écrit une lettre au commissaire de police. Hélène lit cette lettre dans laquelle Jean déclare s'être suicidé, la brûle et téléphone à la police; "Je l'ai tué".
