Speaking out about the mafia can come at a price and for writer Roberto Saviano that has meant 10 years living under police protection. In a book published in 2006, he exposed the activities of the Camorra, a mafia organisation based in Naples, described as Italy's most bloody and ruthless criminal group. ‘I’m afraid of many things,’ the Italian journalist Roberto Saviano has said. ‘But dying isn’t one of them.’ As the author of the international bestseller 'Gomorrah', which exposed the workings of the Neapolitan crime syndicate the Camorra, Saviano faces the possibility of retribution every day. His book — which has sold 10 million copies around the world — earned Saviano a death sentence from the crime bosses he had exposed. For the past nine years, he has lived under constant armed guard, moving from one secret location to another. None of this has deterred him from waging war on organised crime with words as his only weapon. His reportage has helped secure life sentences for 16 mafia ringleaders.
Roberto Saviano made a rare appearance in the UK when he came to the Intelligence Squared stage. In conversation with BBC foreign correspondent Fergal Keane, Saviano talked about his life in hiding and his beginnings as a reporter on the streets of Naples. He revealed his latest work of investigative reporting, 'Zero Zero Zero', in which he delves into the sprawling network of the global cocaine trade. He traced how the $400 billion a year generated by drugs trafficking filters into the international banking system through money laundering from Wall Street to the City of London. The cocaine trade isn’t just a playground for criminals, Saviano argued. It is part of the structure of our global economy where some of the biggest players — the banks — have profited without facing a single criminal conviction.

Perché raccontare va bene, ma puoi farlo solo a patto che le persone ti leggano poco e ti considerino pochissimo; puoi farlo se rimani in una cerchia ristretta, meglio se di intellettuali scelti. Se invece parli a tanti, e tanti ti leggono, rischi la vita. E Roberto Saviano rischia la vita da dieci anni per colpa di una delinquenza chiamata camorra, e per il silenzio di altri.
Sono dieci anni che Roberto Saviano vive sotto scorta. Sono dieci anni che Roberto Saviano non può alzarsi e dire: "Guarda un po', ho finito lo zucchero, faccio un salto al supermercato e torno".
Io ho intervistato Roberto Saviano per capire cosa significa essere da dieci anni nel mirino della mafia. Come vive lui, umanamente, questa situazione. Come l'ha vissuta. Le sue reazioni. I suoi sorrisi, le risate, le lacrime, le frustrazioni, la felicità e l'infelicità. Il pentimento. L'amore. I carabinieri. Le parrucche, i baffi, i nomi fake, le minacce. E l'esigenza e la voglia di continuare a raccontare.
Roberto Saviano ha raccontato pezzi d'Italia e di mondo. Ha scritto Gomorra. Ha scritto ZeroZeroZero. E' in un uscita il suo ultimo libro La paranza dei bambini. Ha scritto per la serie tv Gomorra, ha realizzato monologhi. Roberto Saviano ha raccontato tasselli di criminalità e di sotterfugio. E' entrato nella mente dei criminali, lasciandoli nudi e toccando un nervo scoperto d'Italia.
Roberto Saviano è scrittore e giornalista. Ha collaborato con tutti i maggiori quotidiani esteri. Roberto Saviano è uomo, soprattutto. E di questo, molti, si dimenticano. Da fuori si vede il successo, si notano le copie vendute, ci si lascia attrarre da qualche polemica sorridendo un po' per una parte e un po' per l'altra, a seconda della giornata e del buonumore, dividendo tutto in "parti". Tifosi del quotidiano. E ci si dimentica che Roberto Saviano è uomo. Ci si dimentica che avere la scorta non è un privilegio, ma l'azione necessaria - ancorché insufficiente - per proteggere la libertà e la vita di una persona.

Britain has been named the most corrupt country in the world, according to journalist and mafia expert Roberto Saviano. Saviano has spent more than a decade exposing the Italian Mafia’s criminal behavior and claims that, “It’s not the bureaucracy, it’s not the police, it’s not at the politics but what is corrupt is the financial capital.” Saviano goes on to state that offshore tax havens, such as those in the Cayman Islands allow, “...access to criminal capital in Europe and the UK.” The UK is currently ranked 10th in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index as of 2015. Roberto Saviano
Roberto Saviano (Italian: [roˈbɛrto saˈvjano]; born September 22, 1979) is an Italian writer and journalist.
In his writings, articles, television programs, and books he employs prose and news-reporting style to narrate the story of the Camorra (a powerful Neapolitan mafia-like organization), exposing its territory and business connections.
Since 2006, following the publication of his bestselling book Gomorrah (Gomorra in Italian), where he describes the clandestine particulars of the Camorra business, Saviano has been threatened by several Neapolitan "godfathers". The Italian Minister of the Interior has granted him a permanent police escort. Because of his courageous stance, he is considered a "national hero" by author-philosopher Umberto Eco. He lives at a secret location to avoid reprisal attacks.
Career
Saviano was born in Naples on September 22, 1979. His father was Catholic while his mother was Jewish. He grew up in the Naples suburb Caserta. He graduated in philosophy at the University of Naples Federico II. His writing is influenced by anti-fascist thinkers such as Giustino Fortunato, Gaetano Salvemini and conservative authors such as Ernst Jünger, Ezra Pound, Louis Ferdinand Celine, and Carl Schmitt.

Saviano
Saviano is a comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Naples in the Italian region Campania, located about 25 km northeast of Naples. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 15,114 and an area of 13.8 km².
Geography
Saviano borders the following municipalities: Nola, San Vitaliano, Scisciano, Somma Vesuviana.
History
The commune was created in 1867 through the merger of the former Sirico (thenceforth called Saviano) with Sant'Erasmo. It was part of the Terra di Lavoro province until 1927.

In conversation with BBC foreign correspondent Fergal Keane, Saviano talked about his life in hiding and his beginnings as a reporter on the streets of Naples. He revealed his latest work of investigative reporting, 'Zero Zero Zero', in which he delves into the sprawling network of the global cocaine trade. He traced how the $400 billion a year generated by drugs trafficking filters into the international banking system through money laundering from Wall Street to the City of London. The cocaine trade isn’t just a playground for criminals, Saviano argued. It is part of the structure of our global economy where some of the biggest players — the banks — have profited without facing a single criminal conviction.

Se invece parli a tanti, e tanti ti leggono, rischi la vita. E Roberto Saviano rischia la vita da dieci anni per colpa di una delinquenza chiamata camorra, e per il silenzio di altri.
Sono dieci anni che Roberto Saviano vive sotto scorta. Sono dieci anni che Roberto Saviano non può alzarsi e dire: "Guarda un po', ho finito lo zucchero, faccio un salto al supermercato e torno".
Io ho intervistato Roberto Saviano per capire cosa significa essere da dieci anni nel mirino della mafia. Come vive lui, umanamente, questa situazione. Come l'ha vissuta. Le sue reazioni. I suoi sorrisi, le risate, le lacrime, le frustrazioni, la felicità e l'infelicità. Il pentimento. L'amore. I carabinieri. Le parrucche, i baffi, i nomi fake, le minacce. E l'esigenza e la voglia di continuare a raccontare.
Roberto Saviano ha raccontato pezzi d'Italia e di mondo. Ha scritto Gomorra. Ha scritto ZeroZeroZero. E' in un uscita il suo ultimo libro La paranza dei bambini. Ha scritto per la serie tv Gomorra, ha realizzato monologhi. Roberto Saviano ha raccontato tasselli di criminalità e di sotterfugio. E' entrato nella mente dei criminali, lasciandoli nudi e toccando un nervo scoperto d'Italia.
Roberto Saviano è scrittore e giornalista. Ha collaborato con tutti i maggiori quotidiani esteri. Roberto Saviano è uomo, soprattutto. E di questo, molti, si dimenticano. Da fuori si vede il successo, si notano le copie vendute, ci si lascia attrarre da qualche polemica sorridendo un po' per una parte e un po' per l'altra, a seconda della giornata e del buonumore, dividendo tutto in "parti". Tifosi del quotidiano. E ci si dimentica che Roberto Saviano è uomo. Ci si dimentica che avere la scorta non è un privilegio, ma l'azione necessaria - ancorché insufficiente - per proteggere la libertà e la vita di una persona.

Britain has been named the most corrupt country in the world, according to journalist and mafia expert Roberto Saviano. Saviano has spent more than a decade exposing the Italian Mafia’s criminal behavior and claims that, “It’s not the bureaucracy, it’s not the police, it’s not at the politics but what is corrupt is the financial capital.” Saviano goes on to state that offshore tax havens, such as those in the Cayman Islands allow, “...access to criminal capital in Europe and the UK.” The UK is currently ranked 10th in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index as of 2015.
