Hasta ahora la mayoría de los Moais de la Isla de Pascua, aparecían con el torso y la cabeza descubierta. Otros parecían ser únicamente una cabeza. La cuestión es que hasta hace apenas un año, a nadie se le había ocurrido que las cabezas de los Moais, pudieran ser Moais completamente enterrados al igual que los que aparecían desenterrados. La mayoría de los documentales sobre la Isla de Pascua y los datos empíricos sobre las misteriosas estatuas que se ofrecían al público, obviaban esta cuestión. (Lo cierto, por increíble que pueda resultar es que ya se sabía desde 1915). En concreto fueron Katherine y William Scoresby los que primeramente expusieran los diagramas de los primeros torsos de los Moais.

In 2013 very modern Captain Peter Gluschke takes MV Sea Spirit the spectacular journey around East Greenland's biggest island. It is late autumn, fresh ice is forming in the sheltered fjords and the aurora is alive at night.

Inspired by William Scoresby's drawings of snowflakes under a microscope in his "Account of the Arctic Regions"(1820), this thaumatrope depicts an Arctic snowfall. Thaumatropes were popular toys in Victorian times and work by creating an optical illusion that seems to combine two images into one. Participants at the Special Collections Centre's "Ice and Snow" Family Fun event made snowstorm thaumatropes using Scoresby's drawings as a starting point, in addition to making ice sculptures out of plastic recycling. Ittoqqortoormiit or Illoqortormiut, formerly known as Scoresbysund, is a settlement in the Sermersooq municipality in eastern Greenland. Its population is 452 as of 2013.
The former name Scoresbysund derives from the Arctic explorer and whaler William Scoresby, who was the first to map the area in 1822. The name "Ittoqqortoormiit" means "Big-House Dwellers" in the Eastern Greenlandic dialect. The region is known for its wildlife, including polar bears, muskoxen, and seals.

William Scoresby (5 October 1789 – 21 March 1857), was an English Arctic explorer, scientist and clergyman.
Scoresby was born in the village of Cropton near Pickering 26 miles south of Whitby in Yorkshire. His father, William Scoresby (1760–1829), made a fortune in the Arctic whale fishery. The son made his first voyage with his father at the age of eleven, but then returned to school, where he remained until 1803. After this he became his father's constant companion, and accompanied him as chief officer of the whaler Resolution when on 25 May 1806, he succeeded in reaching 81°30’ N. lat. (19° E. long), for twenty-one years the highest northern latitude attained in the eastern hemisphere. During the following winter, Scoresby attended the natural philosophy and chemistry classes at Edinburgh University, and again in 1809.
In his voyage of 1807, Scoresby began the study of the meteorology and natural history of the polar regions. Earlier results included his original observations on snow and crystals; and in 1809 Robert Jameson brought certain Arctic papers of his before the Wernerian Society of Edinburgh, which at once elected him to its membership.

Damien Rice (born 7 December 1973) is an Irish singer-songwriter, musician and record producer who plays guitar, piano, clarinet and percussion.
Rice was raised in Celbridge, County Kildare, Ireland and began his musical career as a member of the 1990s rock group Juniper. After leaving the band he worked as a farmer in Tuscany and busked throughout Europe before returning to Ireland in 2001 and beginning a solo musical career.
In 2002 his debut album O reached #8 on the UK albums chart, won the Shortlist music prize and generated three top-30 singles in the UK. Rice released his second album 9 in 2006 and his songs have appeared in numerous films and television episodes.
Rice's personal activities include musical contributions to charitable projects such as the Songs for Tibet, Freedom Campaign and the Enough Project.
Rice was born to George and Maureen Rice and raised in Celbridge, County Kildare, Ireland.
Rice began his music career using the stage name "Dodima" Rice[citation needed] and formed the rock band Juniper along with Paul Noonan, Dominic Philips, David Geraghty and Brian Crosby in 1991. The band met whilst they were attending Salesian College secondary school in Celbridge, Co. Kildare as students. After touring throughout Ireland the band released their debut EP Manna in 1995.
Based in Straffan, Kildare the band continued touring and signed a six album record deal with Polygram. Their recording projects generated the singles “Weatherman” and “Single of the Fortnight” which received favorable reviews.

Whitby is a town and civil parish in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire on the north-east coast of England. Nowadays it is a fishing port and tourist destination. It is situated 47 miles (76 km) from York, at the mouth of the River Esk and spreads up the steep sides of the narrow valley carved out by the river's course. At this point the coast curves round, so the town faces more north than east. According to the 2001 UK census, Whitby parish had a population of 13,594. West Cliff has its own landmarks — a statue of Captain James Cook, who sailed from the town, and a whalebone arch, commemorating the once large whaling industry. There is also a new science museum — Whitby Wizard. The whalebone arch is the second to stand on this spot; the original (a larger version) is now preserved in Whitby Archives Heritage Centre. By the inner harbour, next to the tourist information office, there is also a statue commemorating William Scoresby, inventor of the crow's nest. -

*LITERATUR RAKSASA Roman Moby Dick karya pertengahan abad 19 di kejayaan “American Renaissance”. Buah pena serba gigantik namun gak pernah selesai kutuntaskan akibat beberapa sebab. Pertama, Inggrisnya kelas berat di luar kemampuanku. Aku telah melahap beberapa literatur tapi rasanya Moby Dick butuh skor IELT minimal 85, setara TOEFL 800an. Bertutur penuh metafora bahkan “psychedelic” guna membongkar kesumat terpendam para pelakunya. Plus deskripsi khas tradisi pemburu Paus, menyulitkan pembaca awam dari gunung, lewat aksen Inggris “medok” pula. Kendala kedua, berkesan si penulis tidak berupaya memudahkan pembacanya nyaman mengerti. Sebagai pembanding, jika kerumitan Carl Sagan dgn novel Contact kuberi 2 bintang, Da Vinci’s Code dapat 4, lalu 6 bintang buat The Name of The Rose (Umberto Eco), kutaksir Moby Dick mutlak 10 bintang. Rada subjektif, karena ketiga novel tsb juga kubaca terjemahannya. Sementara Moby Dick belum pernah kutemukan versi Indonesia. Ketiga, buku Moby Dick mirip Paus, tebal nyaris 500 halaman memuat 130an bab. Namun kesan terkuat sekaligus memukau, kalimat pembuka amat bersahaja: "Call me Ishmael" (menit 1.03). *PENULIS RAKSASA Herman Melville bukan sarjana dan tidak ngaku penulis, meski produktif menghasilkan roman laris. Ia pengamat dan pencatat, ditunjang referensi dan metode otodidak. Suatu ketika pernah ikut kapal pemburu Paus setahun lebih, timbul obsesinya menerbitkan magnum opus. Melville merujuk jurnal William Scoresby digabung Nabi Yunus di perut Paus, romantisme ala Shakespeare, debat filosofi John Locke versus Immanuel Kant, optimis bak teriakan Sir Thomas Browne, “I’m the happiest man alive”. Terobosan yg membedakan dgn roman fiksi sejenis, berupa kajian ilmiah pada satu bab tentang “cetology”. Selain uraian klasifikasi keluarga Paus berikut anatomi, serta membahas prilaku hingga dugaan “emosi” lewat amarah Moby Dick yg bukan predator. Nyaris 14 bulan Melville berkutat pada bagian tersulit yakni wawancara. Tepatnya “interogasi” guna mengorek trauma para pelaku akibat tragedi nyata. Konon iapun meneken perjanjian tertulis demi kerahasiaan sumbernya. Termasuk mengakui bukunya karya fiksi, merubah semua nama bule jadi “aneh” seperti Ishmael, kapten Ahab, Starbucks, dst. Demi masterpiece dari aspek jurnalistik, drama, filsafat dan kejiwaan, puisi serta agama, perkapalan juga geografis khususnya zoology. Kompleksitas yg melandasi Melville ogah kompromi dgn selera dan bahasa pembacanya, seolah gak butuh khalayak. Ganjarannya? Dunia menobatkan Melville sekaliber Paus Sastra. *LATAR BELAKANG RAKSASA Kondisi Amerika saat berjaya di lautan awal abad industri pra penambangan minyak bumi. Lemak ikan Paus merupakan sumber energi utama, para lelakipun jadi sejati sbg pelaut. Tercipta pasar berikut spekulasi bisnis, termasuk pula intrik dan beragam konflik. Secara detil dinarasikan oleh tokoh bernama Ishmael, meski memudar akibat dendam Kapten Ahab memburu musuh besarnya. Referensi menyebutkan, kapten Ahab mewakili tokoh nyata kapten George Pollack yg menolak diwawancara Melville. Terjadi beberapa penyesuaian antara kisah nyata dgn novel Moby Dick, juga lewat interpretasi In The Heart of The Sea. Obsesi kapten Ahab amat personal untuk membunuh Moby Dick yg pernah menggigit kaki kirinya, sementara fakta termasuk gambaran film lebih murni bisnis. Meski kapten Pollack pernah melaut lagi memburu Moby Dick dgn semboyan terkenal (kuingat dari lagu Phil Collins): “The lightning never struck in the same place twice”. Pollack tak pernah menemukan Moby Dick lagi, malah kapalnya karam menabrak karang. Berbeda nasib dgn kapten Ahab yg akhirnya menghilang bersama lenyapnya Moby Dick di misteri Pasifik. *SINEMA RAKSASA Ekspektasi utamaku tentu nama besar Ron Howard. Sayangnya gagal diimbangi jajaran aktor wahid, cukup mengganggu kayak laga Thor dan SpiderMan di laut. Suguhan grafis dgn spektrum luas amat natural, lebih menggiurkan ketimbang Life of Phi yg sama2 panorama laut. Durasi tayang dua jam gak melelahkan, malah berkesan film monster laut biasa. Jika In The Heart of The Sea meminjam spirit novel Moby Dick yg butuh 100 bab untuk membangun konflik sementara pertempuran gak sampai 5 bab, film ini semestinya beda dgn Kingkong maupun Godzilla. Spirit Moby Dick tentang tamak versus rendah hati di hadapan alam (laut dan Paus penghukum), dendam beralih hormat kepada rekan yg dagingnya dimakan (kanibalism). Batas akhir hakiki manusia saat menundukkan diri sendiri, bukan cuma umbar aksi lantas tempur. Tapi topik film ginian emang gak laku. Milne Land is a large island deep in Scoresby Sund. Captain William Scoresby named the island after the Scottish admiral, Sir David Milne, as was the custom in those sycophantic days. In 2013 very modern Captain Peter Gluschke takes MV Sea Spirit the spectacular journey around East Greenland's biggest island. It is late autumn, fresh ice is forming in the sheltered fjords and the aurora is alive at night. -

Inspired by William Scoresby's drawings of snowflakes under a microscope in his "Account of the Arctic Regions"(1820), this thaumatrope depicts an Arctic snowfall. Thaumatropes were popular toys in Victorian times and work by creating an optical illusion that seems to combine two images into one. Participants at the Special Collections Centre's "Ice and Snow" Family Fun event made snowstorm thaumatropes using Scoresby's drawings as a starting point, in addition to making ice sculptures out of plastic recycling. Whitby is a town and civil parish in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire on the north-east coast of England. Nowadays it is a fishing port and tourist destination. It is situated 47 miles (76 km) from York, at the mouth of the River Esk and spreads up the steep sides of the narrow valley carved out by the river's course. At this point the coast curves round, so the town faces more north than east. According to the 2001 UK census, Whitby parish had a population of 13,594.
West Cliff has its own landmarks — a statue of Captain James Cook, who sailed from the town, and a whalebone arch, commemorating the once large whaling industry. There is also a new science museum — Whitby Wizard. The whalebone arch is the second to stand on this spot; the original (a larger version) is now preserved in Whitby Archives Heritage Centre. By the inner harbour, next to the tourist information office, there is also a statue commemorating William Scoresby, inventor of the crow's nest.

Roman Moby Dick karya pertengahan abad 19 di kejayaan “American Renaissance”. Buah pena serba gigantik namun gak pernah selesai kutuntaskan akibat beberapa sebab. Pertama, Inggrisnya kelas berat di luar kemampuanku. Aku telah melahap beberapa literatur tapi rasanya Moby Dick butuh skor IELT minimal 85, setara TOEFL 800an. Bertutur penuh metafora bahkan “psychedelic” guna membongkar kesumat terpendam para pelakunya. Plus deskripsi khas tradisi pemburu Paus, menyulitkan pembaca awam dari gunung, lewat aksen Inggris “medok” pula.
Kendala kedua, berkesan si penulis tidak berupaya memudahkan pembacanya nyaman mengerti. Sebagai pembanding, jika kerumitan Carl Sagan dgn novel Contact kuberi 2 bintang, Da Vinci’s Code dapat 4, lalu 6 bintang buat The Name of The Rose (Umberto Eco), kutaksir Moby Dick mutlak 10 bintang. Rada subjektif, karena ketiga novel tsb juga kubaca terjemahannya. Sementara Moby Dick belum pernah kutemukan versi Indonesia. Ketiga, buku Moby Dick mirip Paus, tebal nyaris 500 halaman memuat 130an bab. Namun kesan terkuat sekaligus memukau, kalimat pembuka amat bersahaja: "Call me Ishmael" (menit 1.03).

Herman Melville bukan sarjana dan tidak ngaku penulis, meski produktif menghasilkan roman laris. Ia pengamat dan pencatat, ditunjang referensi dan metode otodidak. Suatu ketika pernah ikut kapal pemburu Paus setahun lebih, timbul obsesinya menerbitkan magnum opus. Melville merujuk jurnal William Scoresby digabung Nabi Yunus di perut Paus, romantisme ala Shakespeare, debat filosofi John Locke versus Immanuel Kant, optimis bak teriakan Sir Thomas Browne, “I’m the happiest man alive”. Terobosan yg membedakan dgn roman fiksi sejenis, berupa kajian ilmiah pada satu bab tentang “cetology”. Selain uraian klasifikasi keluarga Paus berikut anatomi, serta membahas prilaku hingga dugaan “emosi” lewat amarah Moby Dick yg bukan predator.
Nyaris 14 bulan Melville berkutat pada bagian tersulit yakni wawancara. Tepatnya “interogasi” guna mengorek trauma para pelaku akibat tragedi nyata. Konon iapun meneken perjanjian tertulis demi kerahasiaan sumbernya. Termasuk mengakui bukunya karya fiksi, merubah semua nama bule jadi “aneh” seperti Ishmael, kapten Ahab, Starbucks, dst. Demi masterpiece dari aspek jurnalistik, drama, filsafat dan kejiwaan, puisi serta agama, perkapalan juga geografis khususnya zoology. Kompleksitas yg melandasi Melville ogah kompromi dgn selera dan bahasa pembacanya, seolah gak butuh khalayak. Ganjarannya? Dunia menobatkan Melville sekaliber Paus Sastra.

Tercipta pasar berikut spekulasi bisnis, termasuk pula intrik dan beragam konflik. Secara detil dinarasikan oleh tokoh bernama Ishmael, meski memudar akibat dendam Kapten Ahab memburu musuh besarnya. Referensi menyebutkan, kapten Ahab mewakili tokoh nyata kapten George Pollack yg menolak diwawancara Melville.
Terjadi beberapa penyesuaian antara kisah nyata dgn novel Moby Dick, juga lewat interpretasi In The Heart of The Sea. Obsesi kapten Ahab amat personal untuk membunuh Moby Dick yg pernah menggigit kaki kirinya, sementara fakta termasuk gambaran film lebih murni bisnis. Meski kapten Pollack pernah melaut lagi memburu Moby Dick dgn semboyan terkenal (kuingat dari lagu Phil Collins): “The lightning never struck in the same place twice”. Pollack tak pernah menemukan Moby Dick lagi, malah kapalnya karam menabrak karang. Berbeda nasib dgn kapten Ahab yg akhirnya menghilang bersama lenyapnya Moby Dick di misteri Pasifik.
*SINEMA RAKSASA
Ekspektasi utamaku tentu nama besar Ron Howard. Sayangnya gagal diimbangi jajaran aktor wahid, cukup mengganggu kayak laga Thor dan SpiderMan di laut. Suguhan grafis dgn spektrum luas amat natural, lebih menggiurkan ketimbang Life of Phi yg sama2 panorama laut. Durasi tayang dua jam gak melelahkan, malah berkesan film monster laut biasa. Jika In The Heart of The Sea meminjam spirit novel Moby Dick yg butuh 100 bab untuk membangun konflik sementara pertempuran gak sampai 5 bab, film ini semestinya beda dgn Kingkong maupun Godzilla.
Spirit Moby Dick tentang tamak versus rendah hati di hadapan alam (laut dan Paus penghukum), dendam beralih hormat kepada rekan yg dagingnya dimakan (kanibalism). Batas akhir hakiki manusia saat menundukkan diri sendiri, bukan cuma umbar aksi lantas tempur. Tapi topik film ginian emang gak laku.

(Lo cierto, por increíble que pueda resultar es que ya se sabía desde 1915). En concreto fueron Katherine y William Scoresby los que primeramente expusieran los diagramas de los primeros torsos de los Moais.
