Step 1: Have a ticket
Have a ticket. Most airlines no longer allow stand-by travel unless the flyer already has a ticket, and it is typically allowed only for flights to the same destination.
Tip
If you are 18 to 22, check out Air Tran’s special standby program for college age travelers. It allows you to fly standby without having a ticket.
Step 2: Call ahead
Before you even think about going to the airport, call your airline to get their policy on flying stand-by and to see if there are seats available on the flight you want.
Step 3: Prepare to pay
Prepare to pay a fee for the privilege of flying standby; most airlines charge one, though some waive it for their frequent flyers.
Tip
Most airlines only allow stand-by travel on the same day as your original flight, and some impose time restrictions, like only allowing you to rebook on a flight within six to 12 hours.
Step 4: Get on the list
At the airport, go to the check-in counter and ask to be put on a list for stand-by flights to your destination. Seats are awarded on a fist-come, first-served basis, so plan on getting to the airport early.
Tip
Remember, you can’t check luggage when you fly standby, so don’t over-pack.
Step 5: Double-check
Head to your gate and double-check with the gate attendant that you are on the standby list.
Step 6: Stay put
Once you’re at the gate, stay put. If a seat becomes available while you’re waiting for your double latte, it will go to the next person on the list.

On most modern airlines, flying standby occurs when a passenger travels on a flight without a prior reservation for that specific flight. There are two circumstances in which passengers typically fly standby. First, a missed flight may require a passenger to fly standby on the next flight to the same destination, as they now lack a reservation. Secondly, a passenger may arrive at the airport early and wish to take an earlier flight listed for that day. They will then attempt to travel standby on the earlier flight, and failing that, proceed to take their booked flight. This is referred to in the industry as "go-show".
Standby can also occur for upgrades. Many airlines give free space available domestic upgrades to First Class for their elite tier fliers. If first class sells out or upgrades full with higher-tiered passengers, elite fliers can standby for a first class seat, should one open up due to a cancellation, no-show, misconnect, irregular operations or an equipment change. If a passenger clears for an upgrade, they may be given new boarding passes at the gate. Some airlines, such as American and United, have gateside monitors that show the upgrade standby list, and will also announce when First Class checks in full.

This is a great question. I always knew I wanted a job that afforded me the opportunity to travel. I asked myself the same question - How To Work For An Airline?
You need to apply to all airlines, regional and major. You also need to be willing to take any job. Like most companies the airline industry likes to hire from within. I got lucky and got on with a regional carrier and started out on the ramp. Within 6 months I had a position in the Benefits Department and progressed up to a major airline from there.
My advice on - How To Work For An Airline? – Investigate the airline carriers you wish to work for and apply often and for any job opening you qualify for. Be aware that the salary will be low because of the great travel benefits they offer. You will receive free flying, however, it is standby and you don't always make the flights you want. You can end up spending the day and night in the airport.
I know you are looking for How To Work For An Airline. What I don’t know is if you are serious about the airline industry as an occupation.
The only way I could afford to work in the industry was I had my spouse’s income to fall back on. I sure wish I had found this while I was still working, I would have been ahead of the game in my retirement.

The Thing About Flying Standby.
Patience, as the cliché goes, is a virtue. Get to the airport an hour or so before the very first flight headed toward your destination, and be prepared to be at the airport all day, hoping and wishing.
Things to know:
1. Show up knowing all possible alternative routes.
2. DO NOT get an attitude with representatives unless they get an attitude first.
3. Dress like you’re going to a religious temple and FLIRT like you’re in a hoe house. This may get you into that open first class seat they couldn’t sell.
4. Carry your necessities in your carry on just in case they send your checked luggage days before they send you.
5. Have enough money to eat at least 3 regular meals. Airport food is not cheap usually.
6. If you must, keep calling the customer service line. They all don’t follow the book. Someone will eventually help you.
7. Call ahead to find out the possibility of you getting on the flight. Ask what number you are on the list.

I wish I was able to vlog more footage of my stress moments but honestly, I even forgot I had a camera because too much was on my mind. The Thing About Flying Standby. Patience, as the cliché goes, is a virtue. Get to the airport an hour or so before the very first flight headed toward your destination, and be prepared to be at the airport all day, hoping and wishing. Things to know: 1. Show up knowing all possible alternative routes. 2. DO NOT get an attitude with representatives unless they get an attitude first. 3. Dress like you’re going to a religious temple and FLIRT like you’re in a hoe house. This may get you into that open first class seat they couldn’t sell. 4. Be aware that the salary will be low because of the great travel benefits they offer. You will receive free flying, however, it is standby and you don't always make the flights you want. You can end up spending the day and night in the airport.
I know you are looking for How To Work For An Airline. What I don’t know is if you are serious about the airline industry as an occupation.
The only way I could afford to work in the industry was I had my spouse’s income to fall back on. I sure wish I had found this while I was still working, I would have been ahead of the game in my retirement.

The Thing About Flying Standby.
Patience, as the cliché goes, is a virtue. Get to the airport an hour or so before the very first flight headed toward your destination, and be prepared to be at the airport all day, hoping and wishing.
Things to know:
1. Show up knowing all possible alternative routes.
2. DO NOT get an attitude with representatives unless they get an attitude first.
3. Dress like you’re going to a religious temple and FLIRT like you’re in a hoe house. This may get you into that open first class seat they couldn’t sell.
4. Carry your necessities in your carry on just in case they send your checked luggage days before they send you.
5. Have enough money to eat at least 3 regular meals. Airport food is not cheap usually.
6. If you must, keep calling the customer service line. They all don’t follow the book. Someone will eventually help you.
7. Call ahead to find out the possibility of you getting on the flight. Ask what number you are on the list.

The planes carrying Japanese Air Self-Defense Forces, stopped in Manila to refuel late on Monday night and will fly to Singapore on Tuesday.
The first of the six planes scheduled to make a stop in Manila before proceeding to Singapore, touched down at the Manila international airport shortly before midnight on Monday.
A second plane arrived about half an hour after the first plane had landed, and four more were expected to arrive early on Tuesday morning.
The planes flew in from the Komaki Air Self-Defense base in Central Japan.
After refueling in Manila, the C-130 planes, carrying members of the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force, will proceed to Singapore where they will be ready for possible deployment to Jakarta.
If the situation in Indonesia worsens they may need to evacuate Japanese nationals quickly.

In this Sunday's Vlog I am welcomed by my Airbnb hosts and travel to several different areas within Bridgetown, Barbados. I then hop a quick flight to St. Vincent and the Grenadines where I walk up and down winding roads for 45 minutes to my lodge where I proceed to do my weekly laundry and then go Kayaking. I then have to wait standby to hop the flight to St. Lucia. This was not fun but I was so relieved once I was finally able to get on. Really bummed I missed my dads birthday, but I was really happy to have had the chance to call him and talk for awhile :). Single Pilot IFR w/ Standby AI Failure & GPS Approach - Good Training Video
Flight from KFRG to KMTP where about 15 minutes after departing, the standby attitude indicator failed. I did minimal cutting of the video so feel free to skip ahead to 17:55 to when I handle the AI failure. It was not an emergency but when dealing with IMC you don't want to be left with only airspeed, mag compass, and altimeter should you have an electrical issue. The video also covers the full clearance copy, run-up, departure and GPS approach back into Farmingdale. While descending on Airway G452 the crew contacted Delhi: "Good evening 1907. Passing through 230 for 180, 74 miles from DPN [the Delhi Airport beacon]". This was the very first departure from Gatwick Airport of the day at 05:15! The bulk of other departures don't start until about 5:45. So there was no other traffic moving when we departed, taxied straight to the runway and took off into the sunrise without stopping! Beautiful descent and approach into Corfu, along the coastline! The colours of the sea looking absolutely stunning in the morning light. A rather rowdy flight, lots of teens travelling to Kavos and lots of the kids travelling on their family holidays, so the background chatter can't be helped I'm afraid. TRIP REPORT: My Worst Day. MKE-EWR-FLL on United Airlines (ERJ-145, 737-800)
TURN ON ANNOTATIONS AND ENJOY IN HD! This report could've been worse and I was flying on a busy travel day, but this is currently the worst flying experience I've ever had including a MISSED connection. My father had enough points for a free flight and used them for me going to Fort Lauderdale from Milwaukee. And on the way out to FLL my only choices were to connect in EWR. And this was my first time on United! Last year I was scheduled to come in late but this time, I was not! I was supposed to get in at 5:30 PM but I got in almost 9 hours late! It starts off with an ERJ-145 and then a Boeing 737-800 that was retrofitted with split scimitar winglets. This is a very basic tutorial for your first flight with the B757 in X-Plane 10. I recommend you to read the manual and you fly a lot, cos is the best way to understand this wonderful aircraft. The tutorial follows the checklist in a flight between Barcelona (LEBL) and Nice (LFMN). It´s not for professional pilots. The tutorial is done without using joystick or pedals, to allow better monitoring to beginner users and display cursor movements (we are speaking that is a very basic tutorial!!). ;-) So, I hope you enjoy and that the tutorial be helpful. PROBABLE CAUSE: "The root and approximate cause of the collision was the unauthorised descending by the Kazak aircraft to FL-140 and failure to maintain the assigned FL-150".

A rather disappointing experience with Thomas Cook this time, when I arrived at Gatwick I was informed that I was a "Standby" passenger. Meaning that I wasn't guaranteed my seat on-board the aircraft and could potentially be turned away from flying because they had over booked the aircraft. However I stood my ground and was finally given a place on the flight and in the seat I had already paid for and prebooked! If I didn't get on that flight, they said they would rebook me and compensate me for my trouble, but that's not the point. Anyway it didn't come to that and I made it.

Another trip on a Thomas Cook A321 and yet again one of the newly refurbished ones had just missed my grip. This was the very first departure from Gatwick Airport of the day at 05:15! The bulk of other departures don't start until about 5:45. So there was no other traffic moving when we departed, taxied straight to the runway and took off into the sunrise without stopping! Beautiful descent and approach into Corfu, along the coastline! The colours of the sea looking absolutely stunning in the morning light. A rather rowdy flight, lots of teens travelling to Kavos and lots of the kids travelling on their family holidays, so the background chatter can't be helped I'm afraid. A rather disappointing experience with Thomas Cook this time, when I arrived at Gatwick I was informed that I was a "Standby" passenger. Meaning that I wasn't guaranteed my seat on-board the aircraft and could potentially be turned away from flying because they had over booked the aircraft. However I stood my ground and was finally given a place on the flight and in the seat I had already paid for and prebooked! If I didn't get on that flight, they said they would rebook me and compensate me for my trouble, but that's not the point. Anyway it didn't come to that and I made it.

The video begins w/ a basic intro and explanation of how to maneuver through the quick views of the cockpit and what manual to use. At about 13 minutes the video continues w/ a step-by-step system power-up, a review of how to tune in the initial navigation radios based on the departure procedure, followed by the engine start-up procedures, all as described in the supplied manual. I have included a sort of table of contents below.
Where possible, explanations of these steps are given in a layman-friendly fashion for the casual flight simulator enthusiast that is looking for a little bit more detail. I myself am in no way an expert on the 737, I'm just sharing knowledge that I have gained from using the simulation, from other fantastic videos shared online, and from talking with people that have more knowledge than me. • A graduate of The Ohio State University, I have been building custom software and websites in the Central Ohio area for 10+ years (I have only had a handlebar moustache for 3 of those years). I have worked on many large, public facing web sites in the law enforcement, financial, and consumer spaces and more recently mobile apps for iOS, Android and Windows. The FAA has downgraded India's Airline Safety Rating, and the Hindustan Times is not very happy about it.
A girl thrown from a plane that crashed at San Francisco International Airport died before she was twice run over by fire trucks, according to a city-issued report that contradicted a coroner's finding that the teen survived the crash and was killed by the vehicles.
An ex-TSA "agent" who has been writing an anonymous blog has finally come out of the screening closet, and tells us all about the behind the scenes drama in an article on Politico Magazine. The only thing of interest is the "Insider's TSA Dictionary." Everything else is stuff we've already heard. Just move along through the ineffective screening machine... nothing to see here.
Now, this is brilliant. A Chinese man wines and dines at the China Eastern Airlines First Class Lounge for a year, for free. Listen in to the show to hear how he got away with it.
Justin Bieber continues to embarrass his Canadian homeland. Now, on a chartered private jet, the smoke from his marijuana use causes the pilots to don oxygen masks for much of the flight. Very classy.
It seems that the pilot shortage has arrived earlier and is having a bigger effect than most people imagined. That's good news for all of you prospective professional airline pilots.

This report could've been worse and I was flying on a busy travel day, but this is currently the worst flying experience I've ever had including a MISSED connection. My father had enough points for a free flight and used them for me going to Fort Lauderdale from Milwaukee. And on the way out to FLL my only choices were to connect in EWR. And this was my first time on United! Last year I was scheduled to come in late but this time, I was not! I was supposed to get in at 5:30 PM but I got in almost 9 hours late! It starts off with an ERJ-145 and then a Boeing 737-800 that was retrofitted with split scimitar winglets.
List of problems in this trip:
1) Mechanical Delay at MKE for over one hour
2) Bad weather at EWR
3) Had to turn around in my first flight roughly 3 times
4) Missed Connection to my 2:00 flight
5) Standby flight (5:00) was cancelled
6) The 7:00 flight was delayed for almost four hours
7) Pilots were not on my new 9:00 flight so a two hour delay
8) Was forced to deplane and go back on the plane again later
9) Arrived in FLL over 8 hours late
10) I was awake for 20+ hours straight

The tutorial follows the checklist in a flight between Barcelona (LEBL) and Nice (LFMN). It´s not for professional pilots. The tutorial is done without using joystick or pedals, to allow better monitoring to beginner users and display cursor movements (we are speaking that is a very basic tutorial!!). ;-)

During this performance the number 6 jet encountered communication issues forcing the pilot to taxi back and enter a standby jet. That's why you'll see two number 4 jets participate in the show towards the end. The majority of the opposing solo passes were performed by a single jet as the 6th jet only entered the air towards the end of the routine.
Apart from these technical issues it still was an awesome performance!
Footage was shot during the Saturday show.
