A sugar plum is a piece of dragée or hard candy made of hardened sugar in a small round or oval shape.
"Plum" in the name of this confection does not mean plum in the sense of the fruit of the same name, but referred to small size and spherical or oval shape. According to The Atlantic Monthly, traditional sugar plums contained no fruit, but were instead hardened sugar balls. According to the Huffington Post, these hardened sugar balls were comfits, and often surrounded a seed, nut, or spice.
The term sugar plum came into general usage in the 1600s. At that time, adding layers of sweet which give sugar plums and comfits their hard shell was done through a slow and labour-intensive process called panning. Until the mechanization of the process, it often took several days, and thus the sugar plum was largely a luxury product. In fact, in the 18th century the word plum became British slang for a large pile of money or a bribe. However, by the 1860s manufacturers were using steam heat and mechanized rotating pans, and it was then available for mass consumption.
1980 (MCMLXXX) was a leap year starting on Tuesday (dominical letter FE) of the Gregorian calendar, the 1980th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 980th year of the 2nd millennium, the 80th year of the 20th century, and the 1st year of the 1980s decade.
Dance is a performance art form consisting of purposefully selected sequences of human movement. This movement has aesthetic and symbolic value, and is acknowledged as dance by performers and observers within a particular culture. Dance can be categorized and described by its choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its historical period or place of origin.
An important distinction is to be drawn between the contexts of theatrical and participatory dance, although these two categories are not always completely separate; both may have special functions, whether social, ceremonial, competitive, erotic, martial, or sacred/liturgical. Others disciplines of human movement are sometimes said to have a dance-like quality, including martial arts, gymnastics, figure skating, synchronized swimming and many other forms of athletics.
Theatrical dance, also called performance or concert dance, is intended primarily as a spectacle, usually a performance upon a stage by virtuoso dancers. It often tells a story, perhaps using mime, costume and scenery, or else it may simply interpret the musical accompaniment, which is often specially composed. Examples are western ballet and modern dance, Classical Indian dance and Chinese and Japanese song and dance dramas. Most classical forms are centred upon dance alone, but performance dance may also appear in opera and other forms of musical theatre.
Sugar is the generalized name for sweet, short-chain, soluble carbohydrates, many of which are used in food. They are carbohydrates, composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. There are various types of sugar derived from different sources. Simple sugars are called monosaccharides and include glucose (also known as dextrose), fructose and galactose. The table or granulated sugar most customarily used as food is sucrose, a disaccharide. (In the body, sucrose hydrolyses into fructose and glucose.) Other disaccharides include maltose and lactose. Longer chains of sugars are called oligosaccharides. Chemically-different substances may also have a sweet taste, but are not classified as sugars. Some are used as lower-calorie food substitutes for sugar described as artificial sweeteners.
Sugars are found in the tissues of most plants, but are present in sufficient concentrations for efficient extraction only in sugarcane and sugar beet. Sugarcane refers to any of several species of giant grass in the genus Saccharum that have been cultivated in tropical climates in South Asia and Southeast Asia since ancient times. A great expansion in its production took place in the 18th century with the establishment of sugar plantations in the West Indies and Americas. This was the first time that sugar became available to the common people, who had previously had to rely on honey to sweeten foods. Sugar beet, a cultivated variety of Beta vulgaris, is grown as a root crop in cooler climates and became a major source of sugar in the 19th century when methods for extracting the sugar became available. Sugar production and trade have changed the course of human history in many ways, influencing the formation of colonies, the perpetuation of slavery, the transition to indentured labour, the migration of peoples, wars between sugar-trade–controlling nations in the 19th century, and the ethnic composition and political structure of the New World.
A plum is a fruit of the subgenus Prunus of the genus Prunus. The subgenus is distinguished from other subgenera (peaches, cherries, bird cherries, etc.) in the shoots having a terminal bud and solitary side buds (not clustered), the flowers in groups of one to five together on short stems, and the fruit having a groove running down one side and a smooth stone (or pit).
Mature plum fruit may have a dusty-white coating that gives them a glaucous appearance. This is an epicuticular wax coating and is known as "wax bloom". Dried plum fruits are called dried plums or prunes, although prunes are a distinct type of plum, and may have antedated the fruits now commonly known as plums.
Plums are a diverse group of species. The commercially important plum trees are medium-sized, usually pruned to 5–6 metres height. The tree is of medium hardiness. Without pruning, the trees can reach 12 metres in height and spread across 10 metres. They blossom in different months in different parts of the world; for example, in about January in Taiwan and early April in the United Kingdom.

Lauren Cuthbertson performs the famous Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, set to Tchaikovsky's iconic score. Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/nutcracker Peter Wright’s nigh-on definitive production for The Royal Ballet ranks as one of the most enduring and enchanting versions of The Nutcracker. With its festive period setting, dancing snowflakes and enchanting stage magic, Lev Ivanov’s 1892 ballet has become the perfect Christmas entertainment, with Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous, sugar-spun music the most recognizable of all ballet scores. Loosely based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the ballet opens with the lively Christmas party that is hosted by the Stahlbaum family, its Victorian setting captured in opulent detail by Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs. Wright’s choreography ingeniously in...
A beautiful fantasy cartoon my dad recorded from the TV back in the early 80s. The music is absolutely wonderful! Diana Adams was one of Balanchine's favorite and most influential ballerinas for his New York City Ballet in the 1950's and '60's. AGON was created on her as well as TCHAIKOVSKY PAS DE DEUX. She was injured so Violette Verdy danced the premiere (brilliantly) and "Titania" in his A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM was also created for her but another injury forced her out of the premiere. That honor went to Melissa Hayden. She later became the director of his School of American Ballet, and it was Diana Adams who discovered Suzanne Farrell in Cincinnati and brought her to Balanchine's attention.

One of the greatest American ballerinas - maybe THE greatest, was the daughter of an Osage Indian tribe member, and you cannot get more American than that. She was the first American to dance at the Bolshoi Theater as a guest artist, and was wife and muse to Balanchine. His FIREBIRD was choreographed for her and that triumph (for them both) firmly established the NYC Ballet as a force to be reckined with in the dance world. In her day she was the highest paid and most popular ballerina in the world. Her partners included Nureyev, Bruhn, Eglevsky, Magallanes, and virtually every male dancer of note. She was Balanchine's original "Sugar Plum Fairy" in his Nutcracker and the roles he created for her are legendary. They include the leads in his Swan Lake, Scotch Symphony, Allegro Brillia...
Like sugar plum fairies in "The Nutcracker," the moons of Saturn performed a celestial ballet before the eyes of NASA's Cassini spacecraft. New movies frame the moons' silent dance against the majestic sweep of the planet's rings and show as many as four moons gliding around one another. The new video can be found at: http://www.nasa.gov/cassini http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov and http://ciclops.org To celebrate the holidays, the Cassini imaging team has created a video collection of "mutual events," which occur when one moon passes in front of another, as seen from the spacecraft. Imaging scientists use mutual event observations to refine their understanding of the dynamics of Saturn's moons. Digital image processing has enabled scientists to turn these routine observations into br...

Garland Waltz is the first dance in Act one of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece Ballet, Sleeping Beauty. It's peformed here by the Ballet Company of The Kirov Theater (now back to the Tsarist name Mariinsky.) We see some younguns here too from the world famous "Vaganova Ballet Academy" which is also based at the Kirov/Mariinsky. The music "Garland Waltz" must be one of Tchaikovsky's most famous works, so beautiful it can bring tears to the eyes. And to add to the treat, it is followed by the wonderful "Rose Adagio!" Irina Kolpakova is Princess Aurora, Sergei Berezhnoi is Prince Desiree, and Lubov (Love) Kunakova is the Lilac Fairy.

From a 45 RPM E.P. that I've found at a flea market. This might be from the '50s or '60s. For those of you who have seen my 2-part video of my turntable may recall seeing that record. In this video, I'm playing both sides. The record is scratchy and has 2 skips in the Chinese Dance. I managed to cut down the noise as much as I can (see below for the software I use). I prefer playing Side B first because I felt that Side A should be saved for last. The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The libretto is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", by way of Alexandre Dumas' adapted story "The Nutcracker". It was given its premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg on Sunday, December 18, 1892, on a double-bill with Tchaikovsky's opera Iolanta. In 1850 in Germany Clara's family are celebrating on Christmas Eve. Clara is jealous because her sister, Louise, has a boyfriend, leaving her feeling sad and wondering about growing up. She immediately cheers up when the eccentric Uncle Drosselmeier arrives at their home with special gifts: a fully automated toy castle for everyone, and a Nutcracker for Clara. Upon giving her the Nutcracker, Drosselmeier tells her a story about how the Nutcracker came to be the Prince of the Dolls.

I haven't got a job
'Cos they say they couldn't use no freaks
I want a position at the top
No training and a two day week
Won't you take me
To the land of flood and hunger
Won't you lead me
To the streets of dust and death
Let it rain on me
Let it shine on you
Let the sun shine through
Sugar plum
I haven't got a car
'Cos I never earned enough
To pay the price of fuel
Now I'm playin' my guitar
'Cos you understand that
I got the blues
Won't you take me
To the land of flood and hunger
Won't you lead me
To the streets of dust and death
Let it rain on me
Let it shine on you
Let the sun shine through
Sugar plum
Now I'm walking through the street
And I haven't eaten nothin'
For a week or two
I imagine that my belly's gonna swell
'Til I can't see my shoes
Won't you take me
To the land of flood and hunger
Won't you lead me
To the streets of dust and death
Let it rain on me
Let it shine on you
Let the sun shine through
