A con artist calling himself Prince Dalmar El Faro comes to Greenpoint telling everyone who will listen to him about the starving Trombonians of his native country. He says his countrymen "do not ask for charity - all they want is money." Local authoress Fawn Ocheltree decides to help raise the money by writing a play set in Ancient Rome to be played by the kids. The gang is not interested, but their mothers press them into it. It's after their bedtime, and they are trying to recite lines they do not understand. Mickey giggles as Little Mary, playing a slave girl, begs for mercy from Joe Cobb playing Nero. Ernie and Farina playing captured cannibals start yawning as does the entire audience. Jackie enters from the wrong side of the stage, and an effect showing Mickey supposedly on horseback falls apart. Jackie livens things up by tying firecrackers to the tail of a cow being posed as a bull. The resulting fracas leads to a box of fireworks going off as everyone runs for the hills, bringing the whole scam to a halt. (from Our Gang Wiki)

Our Gang Silent Films | No. 21-Derby Day -
Thanks to The Lucky Corner for the following:
the kids:
main players
Mickey Daniels as "Mickie"
Featured role. He's definitely the take-charge guy in this film. It's his idea to have the kiddie race. At the race, his name is spelled "Micky." He rides dog 001 (aka Bill).
Allen "Farina" Hoskins as "Farina"
Featured role. He swipes hot dogs in the early sequence, and then rides a tricycle in the kiddie race, eventually becoming the winner.
Joe Cobb as "Joe"
Featured role. He's selling lemonade with Mickey in the early sequence. At the kiddie race, he gets some footage flirting with a girl, then rides the cow.
Jackie Condon as "Jackie"
Supporting role. He's selling hot dogs with Jack in the early sequence, then rides a cart pulled by dog 003 (aka Barney) in the kiddie race.
Jack Davis as "Jack"
Supporting role. He's selling hot dogs with Jackie in the early sequence, then rides Mary's pony in the kiddie race. This was his last Our Gang appearance.
Mary Kornman as "Mary"
Supporting role. She's the rich girl whose father is big at the racetrack.
Ernie "Sunshine Sammy" Morrison as "Ernie" aka "Sammy"
Supporting role. The inter-titles call him "Ernie," but the board showing the jockeys with their accompanying animals lists him as "Sammy." Maltin & Bann seem to indicate that the nickname "Sunshine Sammy" was used in this film, but it isn't. He rides Dinah the Mule in the kiddie race.
George "Sonny Boy" Warde as "Sing Joy"
Supporting role. Listed by Maltin & Bann by the character name. The payroll summaries verify that Warde played this role. He joins the gang in their adventures, riding a cart pulled by the goat.
girl 021
Small part. The fat girl that flirts with Joe. She later appeared in "Big Business" (no. 23) and "Commencement Day." (no. 26).

Allen "Farina" Hoskins as "Farina"
Supporting role. The nickname is indicated in the same print, as well as the pronoun 'she.' His big moment is being woken up by the hog.
Jackie Condon
Supporting role. He's one of the "Tucker" boys. He does mostly ensemble acting, but is the one who makes it possible for Ernie and Farina to join in, and also is responsible for the detached wheel.
Joe Cobb as "Joe"
Supporting role. He's another of the "Tucker" boys, and his first name is indicated in the same print. He does mostly ensemble acting, but is given a solo moment during the toad-catching sequence.

the adults:

Supporting role. She's the mother of Mickey, and is the victim of the phonograph prank.
Richard Daniels as "Pa Tucker"
Supporting role. He's the father of Jack, Joe and Jackie. The 'Pa' part of the character name derives from the same print mentioned above.
Clara Guiol as "Mrs. Tucker"
Supporting role. She's given minimal footage on her own in this film. She's the first one to notice the rain.
the locations:
the neighborhood
I don't yet know where the Tuckers' and McTeeters' neighborhood is, but the Tuckers live at 1797 and the McTeeters live at 1799 (probably a corner house).
miscellaneous:
33 days of shooting went into the making of this film. The 1923 studio datebook indicates that the Our Gang unit was 'preparing' for this film on May 3rd with director Tom McNamara. This was the day after Robert McGowan had finished initial shooting for "July Days" (no. 18). Actual shooting for "Sunday Calm" began on May 4th and continued under McNamara until May 26th. After the usual Sunday off, the Our Gang unit put in two more shooting dates on May 28th and 29th, but this time under assistant director Clarence Morehouse. Apparently, neither McNamara nor McGowan were available for these two dates. May 29th was considered the 'finish' date. No shooting took place on May 6th, 13th, 20th or 27th, which were all Sundays, nor on the 30th, which was Memorial Day. McGowan spent a day shooting retakes for "July Days" on the 31st, and then directed the unit through "No Noise" (no. 20) and retakes for "Stage Fright" (no. 17). On July 3rd, the day after retakes were finished for this last film, McGowan began working on "Sunday Calm" again, continuing until the film was considered 'finished' on July 14th. No shooting took place on July 8th or 15th, which were both Sundays, nor on July 4th, which was Independence Day. The Our Gang unit actually had a few days off before McGowan started the next film on the 18th, which was "Derby Day" (no. 21). Work started and finished not only for this film, but also for "Tire Trouble" (no. 22) and "Big Business" (no. 23), and Mark Goldaine had just begun directing "The Buccaneers" (no. 24) before "Sunday Calm" was finally completed. On Oct 2nd, shooting was divided between Goldaine's "The Buccaneers," and Morehouse's "Sunday Calm."
There were 40 copies of this film printed for its initial release.

technical details:
Production A-20.
Filmed June 1 to 20, 1923.
Released September 23, 1923.
It was the 17th film in the series to be released.
Copyrighted September 24, 1923, by Pathé Exchange, Inc.
Registration no. LU19443.
Since the copyright was not renewed,
this film is now in the public domain.
Silent two-reeler.
Opening title: '"Our Gang" Comedies - Hal Roach presents His Rascals in "No Noise".'
Released into TV syndication as Mischief Makers episode no. 1041, "Operation Tonsils," copyrighted Sep. 1, 1960, with registration number LP17346.
the crew:
Produced by Hal Roach
Directed by Robert F. McGowan
Titles by H. M. Walker
Story by Hal E. Roach
Teacher: Fern Carter
Released by Pathé Exchange, Inc.
Passed by the National Board of Review
the kids:
main players
Mickey Daniels as "Mickey"
Lead role. The gang's homemade sign spells his name "Micky Daniels." He's the star of the film, appearing in most of the scenes.
Allen "Farina" Hoskins as "Farina"
Featured role. Or more specifically, "Little Farina." He's a 'she' in this film. As usual, he's the comedy relief in this comedy, eating everything he gets his hands on, and getting into the chloroform. His hair is combed out in this short, giving him a rather peculiar look.
Ernie "Sunshine Sammy" Morrison as "Ernie"
Supporting role. Maltin & Bann indicate that the "Sunshine Sammy" nickname was used. His big scene is with the skeleton.
Joe Cobb as "Joe"
Supporting role. He has a good moment with his hair standing on end, but most of what he does is ensemble acting.
Jack Davis as "Jack"
Supporting role. He seems to be the kid in charge in Mickey's absence. Mostly, though, he does ensemble acting.
Jackie Condon as "Jackie"
Supporting role. He does mostly ensemble acting in this short.
Mary Kornman as "Mary"
Small part. She's on her way to see Mickey at the hospital when the gang decides to join her. She's left out of most of the chaos, though.
other kids
Andy Samuel as "Lewis De Vore"
Small part. He's among the boys with the vaccination orders that trade places with the gang. He's the first to pull the piece of paper out of his pocket, and an insert shot of the order reveals that his character name is "Lewis De Vore," a name included in Maltin & Bann's cast listing for this film.
other boys
Small parts. Four additional boys with vaccination orders. It's possible that one of these is Lewis De Vore, and that the impression that this is a character played by Andy Samuel is merely the result of editing.
the adults:
Beth Darlington as Mickey's nurse
Supporting role. She's featured fairly strongly, particularly at the beginning of the film, trying to give Mickey castor oil.
Charley Young as the doctor in charge
Supporting role. He gives the gang several phony diagnoses to scare them.
Charles Stevenson as one of the other doctors
Small part. He's mainly seen chasing the gang around.
Clara Guiol as one of the nurses
Bit part. She's seen in the parts where the boys are being scared.
Helen Gilmore as one of the nurses
Bit part. She's seen in the same scenes with Guiol.
Charles Bachman as the police officer
Bit part. He chases the kids out of the hospital, only to get attacked by their dog.
the locations:
Hal E. Roach Studios

Our Gang Silents | No. 20-No Noise
Thanks to The Lucky Corner (theluckycorner.com) for cast and technical details.
technical details:
Served as the front of Municipal Hospital.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Three years ago, I lay in a silent world – in a medically induced coma, for a month. I actually passed away three times on the operating table. Yet here I am, and incredibly grateful to share my story today. I was badly burned during the 2011 Kimberley ultra-marathon; there was no way I could foretell the day that would change my life forever.
Turia Pitt was named Cosmopolitan’s ‘Woman of the Year’ for 2013, short-listed for this year’s ‘Young Australian of the Year’ and the winner of the recent NSW ‘Woman of the Year’ Awards. She is a burns survivor, motivational speaker, engineer and published author.
She has a double degree in Mining Engineering and Science and graduated with first class honours. She worked as a model before landing her dream job with Rio Tinto at their prestigious Argyle Diamond Mine and moving to Kununurra with her partner, Michael. Their lives were turned upside-down when she was trapped by a grassfire in a 100-kilometre ultra-marathon in September 2011, and suffered burns to over 65 per cent of her body.
She completed the Variety Cycle from Sydney to Uluru, the 20 kilometre Lake Argyle Swim and a section of the Great Wall of China. She is a passionate ambassador for Interplast, a charity that provides free reconstructive surgery to people in developing countries. In 2014 she managed to raise almost $200,000 for this cause with a team of incredible women. In 2015, she will lead another group to the Inca Trail (Peru).
https://www.interplast.org.au/
She undertook her MBA last year, hopes to compete in an Iron Man in 2016, is excited to have a family with her wonderful partner Michael and has aspirations to study Medicine.
Her memoir ‘Everything to Live For’ was published late in 2013.

Extreme SEAL Experience SEAL and BUD/S Prep courses are conducted in Norfolk, Virginia (Chesapeake) home of the East Coast SEAL Teams
BUD/S Special Forces Army Ranger Marine RECON MARSOC Air Force Para Rescue, Navy SEALs Prep Training. EXTREME SEAL EXPERIENCE.com. Hell Night, Platoon, Advanced, SEAL Sniper, and SEAL Advanced Operator Training. SEAL Training BUDS Prep. Helo Cast, Underwater Knot Tying, Drown Proofing Training
Our Training Course "Hell Night" is an intense 24-hours designed to build confidence and show guys how to survive Navy SEAL Hell Week. This is accomplished by using all SEAL instructors who have survived BUDS themselves and teach guys how they did it. The day gets progressively harder and at midnight, we take off the gloves as Instructors and see if trainees have learned anything they were taught during the day. Not a mindless day of push-ups and wind sprints, this is a training course dedicated to helping guys survive the "number one" evolution in BUDS ( Hell Week) that trainees quit BUDS Training participating in. "You can't do that in just 24-hours!" THE F**K I CAN'T! I have since 1992 and it works... The second hardest part of BUDS is staying motivated for six hard months. Most guys know a lot about BUDS, but little about the ultimate goal, which is SEAL Team. And each push-up and each day in BUDS becomes harder. We take care of that with Platoon and Advanced Training and show guys some of what they'll be doing as SEALs. Training with SEALs and asking questions, planning missions, shooting weapons and combat survival helps maintain focus for the "Toughest Military Training in the World." Kick Some Ass. http://www.extremesealexperience.com
