Adam (Hebrew: אָדָם, Arabic: آدم, Syriac: ܐܵܕ݂ܵܡ) is a figure in the Book of Genesis, the Qur'an and the Kitáb-i-Íqán. According to the creation myth of Abrahamic religions, he is the first human. In the Genesis creation narratives, he was created by Yahweh-Elohim ("Yahweh-God", the god of Israel), though the term "adam" can refer to both the first individual person, as well as to the general creation of humankind. Christian churches differ on how they view Adam's subsequent behavior (often called the Fall of man), and to the consequences that those actions had on the rest of humanity. Christian and Jewish teachings sometimes hold Adam and Eve (the first woman) to a different level of responsibility for the Fall, though Islamic teaching holds both equally responsible. In addition, Islam holds that Adam was eventually forgiven, while Christianity holds that redemption occurred only later through the sacrifice of God's son, Jesus Christ. Bahá'í Faith, Islam and some Christian denominations consider Adam to be the first Prophet.
Adam Goodes (born 8 January 1980 in Wallaroo, South Australia) is a professional Australian rules football player with the Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL).
Goodes holds an elite place in AFL/VFL history as a dual Brownlow Medallist, premiership player, four-time All-Australian and member of the Indigenous Team of the Century and has represented Australia in the International Rules Series.
Goodes is well known for his Indigenous Australian heritage, and is prominently involved and associated with several Indigenous sport and community programs.
He was born in Wallaroo, to Lisa May (a Narungga child with Adnyamathanha ancestry) and Graham Goodes, with siblings Jake and Brett. His parents were separated when he was four and his father moved to Queensland while Goodes moved between Wallaroo and Adelaide (in South Australia) and Merbein (in Victoria) with his mother. While at Merbein, Adam attended primary school at Merbein West Primary School in 1986, and it was there that he began to play Australian Rules football. Goodes moved with his family to Horsham, Victoria where he played football at high school and represented Victoria at under 16 and under 18 levels. He began playing with the North Ballarat Rebels as a 16 year old in the Victorian Football League and played in a winning premiership side where he was scouted by the Sydney Swans.
Since 1960 the Australian of the Year Award has been part of the celebrations surrounding Australia Day (26 January), during which time the award has grown steadily in significance to become Australia’s pre-eminent award. The Australian of the Year announcement has become a very prominent part of the annual Australia Day celebrations. The official announcement has grown to become a major public event, with thousands of onlookers witnessing the televised ceremony in Canberra. The award offers an insight into Australian identity, reflecting the nation’s evolving relationship with world, the role of sport in Australian culture, the impact of multiculturalism, and the special status of Australia’s Indigenous people. It has also provoked spirited debate about the fields of endeavour that are most worthy of public recognition. In this way the awards have advanced a national conversation. "Money and power aren't the point here. The rich have no place on the list. Raw success isn't enough. There has to be something more, some sense of distinction that lifts a candidate out of the ruck of the famous."
