Way back in the 1980’s, tag-team wrestling was a vital part of the then-World Wrestling Federation’s product. There’s just something so simplistic about good tag wrestling, but such directness really doesn’t detract from the excitement tandem matches can provide.
Despite the fact that tag team wrestling has had its importance diminished by WWE management in recent times, wrestling fans have a great fondness for doubles bouts. Apparently, those in charge of the company don’t feel tag wrestling is quite as interesting as it once was, because there’s been a real lack of emphasis on the style in the modern era.
Arguably the last truly great period for tag wrestling in WWE fell when Los Guerreros were tearing it up in matches against the likes of Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio, Edge, Rhyno and Team Angle on Smackdown in 2002-2003.
Since then, things haven’t been the same, although there are high hopes that The New Day can help provide a main card WWE Tag-Team Title match at WrestleMania equal to some past greats.
Remarkably, a tag-team match fell in the main event slot of the first ever WrestleMania. That has never happened again, but that fact doesn’t mean ‘Mania hasn’t been witness to some tremendous multi-man matches.
