Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has a land area of 1104 km2 and shares its northern border with Guangdong Province of Mainland China. With around 7.2 million inhabitants of various nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.
After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Surrender of Japan, the British resumed control. In the 1980s, negotiations between the United Kingdom and the China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems. Disputes over the perceived misapplication of this principle have contributed to popular protests, including the 2014 Umbrella Revolution.
An international airport is an airport that offers customs and immigration facilities for passengers travelling between countries. International airports are typically larger than domestic airports and often feature longer runways and facilities to accommodate the heavier aircraft commonly used for international and intercontinental travel. International airports often also host domestic flights. Some, such as Frankfurt Airport in Germany are very large; others such as Fa'a'ā International Airport in Tahiti, are quite small.
Buildings, operations and management have become increasingly sophisticated since the mid 20th century, when international airports began to provide infrastructure for international civilian flights. Detailed technical standards have been developed to ensure safety and common coding systems implemented to provide global consistency. The physical structures that serve millions of individual passengers and flights are among the most complex and interconnected in the world. By the second decade of the 21st century, there were over 1,200 international airports and almost two billion international passengers along with 50 million metric tonnes of cargo were passing through them annually.
Hong Kong International Airport (IATA: HKG, ICAO: VHHH) is the main airport in Hong Kong. It is located on the island of Chek Lap Kok, which largely comprises land reclaimed for the construction of the airport itself. The airport is also colloquially known as Chek Lap Kok Airport (赤鱲角機場), to distinguish it from its predecessor, the closed Kai Tak Airport.
The airport has been in commercial operation since 1998, replacing the Kai Tak Airport. It is an important regional trans-shipment centre, passenger hub and gateway for destinations in Mainland China (with 45 destinations) and the rest of Asia. The airport is the world's busiest cargo gateway and one of the world's busiest passenger airports. It is also home to one of the world's largest passenger terminal buildings (the largest when opened in 1998).
The airport is operated by the Airport Authority Hong Kong 24 hours a day and is the primary hub for Cathay Pacific (the flag carrier of Hong Kong), Dragonair, Hong Kong Airlines, Hong Kong Express Airways and Air Hong Kong (cargo carrier). The airport is one of the hubs of Oneworld alliance, and it is also one of the Asian-Pacific cargo hubs for UPS Airlines. It is a focus city for many airlines, including China Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines. Singapore Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, and Air India to utilize Hong Kong as a stopover point for their flights.
Hong Kong International Airport is an international and regional aviation hub, and is widely recognised for its operational excellence. Through our extensive aviation network, the airport connects people from different parts of the world easily, and together supports the continuous growth of the pillar industries of Hong Kong. Also, we have pledged to be the world's greenest airport, the first commitment of its kind worldwide. We will work hand-in-hand with stakeholders on future airport development, and grow together, sustainably, with Hong Kong.

When I reflect back on our travels around Asia few memories are fonder than our time spent in both Hong Kong and Macau. From the fascinating attractions in both cities to the amazing local eats we really packed in a lot over a short period of time. Some of the top highlights included eating dim sum, taking boat rides, viewing the symphony of lights, eating Macanese street food, frequenting casinos and marveling at the views of both cities from high vantage points. These are video clips I shot on March 1st, 2013 while waiting for my flight to San Francisco.
Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
Fly away
From the weight of the world
On the ground
I'm international
But I don't know where to go
Hopefully where summer days
Can melt these winter bones
I'm international
And you're orbiting my brain
I'm reduced to writing nothing
All over napkins on the plane
Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
Taking pictures of myself
In the mirror on wall
Trying hard not to make my space
The loneliest place of all
Early warning all across the sky
Clouds are rolling in on your light
Any change from here would be
The wisest change of all
Any place from here up here
Would be the finest place to fall
Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
I'm losing track of myself
On all the time zone lines
And if I daylight save
Do I jump ahead or fall behind?
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
And I'm fine 'cause I know
You know, I know
It's easy to see
Clouds were built for dreams
Because nothing up there
Is as easy as it seems
I step out
And try to walk around
As I fall, I look up
And wonder why it let me down
I'm international
That's twice the speed of sound
I just hope I take off from here
Before I hit the ground
If I could get to heaven
By an airplane in the sky
We would always be in love
And we would always love to fly
Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
Taking pictures of myself
In the mirror on wall
Trying hard not to make my space
The loneliest place of all
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
And I'm fine 'cause I know
You know, I know
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
You know, I know
