Rediscover Shakespeare with one of Britain's most celebrated actors. Simon Callow tracks down the real man behind the legend, bringing to life both the Bard himself and his unforgettable characters in this brand new and definitive stage production.
Following the world-wide success of The Mystery of Charles Dickens (West End/Broadway) and hot on the heels of his sell-out hit Dr Marigold & Mr Chops, Callow joins forces with Jonathan Bate, pre-eminent Shakespeare biographer and editor of the Royal Shakespeare Company's Shakespeare: The Complete Works, to fill the stage with Shakespeare's real and imagined worlds. A theatrical event not to be missed.
"Delivered here by Simon Callow with pacing so perfect, and dramatic tension so fraught, that a multi-generation audience sat on the edge of their seats throughout...Callow, in total control of the texts' emotional momentum, reminds us that the aural tradition has an impact that, even now, can be overwhelming."
Sunday Times (on Dr Marigold & Mr Chops)
"Jonathan Bate is an outstanding scholar (and author of the best existing biography of Shakespeare) who writes with as much elegance as insight about the making of theatre and the creation of the plays"
Richard Eyre, The Sunday Telegraph

Both films are very good, but I do think that Live from Baghdad was just that little bit more exciting for my personal preferences. However, James and the Giant Peach will always be something special.

It was inevitable that, after some five years of obsessing over all things Callow, I would wind up interviewing him. The result? A clash of very fruity voices... and half an hour crammed with thespian ponderings! The sound quality isn't great, but this recording was only intended as reference for an article I was writing. It covers so much more than I could reasonably include that I thought it was worth sharing.
Here's the article: http://cambridgetab.co.uk/culture/interview-simon-callow
This encounter rounded off one of the most horrible weeks of my life. It was a fantastic lift. I'm clearly nervous as hell throughout, but it was a genuinely delightful experience. Callow had promised me only ten minutes, and had to catch the train back to London. It's a mark of his generosity that he gave thirty minutes to this student amateur. Meeting your heroes is always scary: it's wonderful when they're what you expect, devastating when they're not... Callow? He was wonderful.

Happy New Year! And welcome to the dawning of a new era...to celebrate, here's something that hasn't happened in a while: A MOVIE review! And what a movie it is...it's Street Fighter - my personal favourite video game movie! Often reviled, certainly rather calamitous but frequently freaking awesome...it's special - and as is common, this video will go behind the scenes into the genesis, the casting, and all that other shit that went on behind the scenes. What more could you want? For you, the day this video appeared in your Subscriptions feed was the most important day of your life...but for me, it was Tuesday. Enjoy!
STREET FIGHTER (1994) is the property of Capcom and Universal. The movie was directed and written by Steven E. de Souza and stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen, Byron Mann, Damian Chapa and Simon Callow.
FURTHER READING: There are two sources of great note that very much helped with the creation of this video. The first is the article "Street Fighter The Movie - What Went Wrong" by Chris Plante @ Polygon: http://www.polygon.com/features/2014/3/10/5451014/street-fighter-the-movie-what-went-wrong - a definitive feature article on the creation of the movie.
The second is "Street Fighter The Movie Broke My Heart", a series of Shoryuken forum posts by Alan Noon, who worked on the Street Fighter: The Movie Game - http://forums.shoryuken.com/discussion/21457/street-fighter-the-movie-broke-my-heart - while the game is not covered in this video, this has invaluable info on the digitising process, and some insight into the actors involved.

Comedian Rik Mayall died suddenly on 9 June 2014. Mayall's blend of rocket-fuelled physical comedy, surrealism, subversive satire and pompous punk wit left a body of work that spanned four decades. Mayall's characters include the Black Country's investigative nerd Kevin Turvey, Felicity Kendal-adoring student and 'People's Poet' Rik in The Young Ones, ruthless MP Alan B'Stard in The New Statesman, seedy loser Richie in Bottom and larger-than-life characters Robin Hood and flying ace Lord Flashheart from Blackadder.
Narrated by Simon Callow, this programme salutes Rik Mayall and celebrates his part in the UK's comedy history using rare and unseen archive footage. It also features contributions from people who knew or admired him, including Michael Palin, Simon Pegg, Lenny Henry, Ben Elton, Alexei Sayle, Christopher Ryan, Tim McInnerny, Jools Holland, Ruby Wax and Greg Davies.

Interview with Bryan Forbes. Subscribe: http://bit.ly/subscribetotheBFI.
In January 2012 director, actor and screenwriter Bryan Forbes became the latest recipient of the BFI's highest honour, the Fellowship. Unable to accept the award in person, he was interviewed at his home by actor Simon Callow about his remarkable career, which has included Whistle Down the Wind (1961), The L-Shaped Room (1962) and Séance on a Wet Afternoon (1964).
Forbes discusses his early career as an actor (his interpretation of Shakespeare's Shylock was cited as being the greatest of his generation) and his works as a director, often radically different in style to the British New Wave films from the early 1960s. Callow questions Forbes about his renowned ease with actors, and asks about one of the director's projects which failed to come to fruition - a film about the lives of Napoleon and Josephine.

Dzięki niemu powstał widowiskowy film akcji z elementami kina fantastyczno - naukowego i przygodowego, wyróżniający się szybkim tempem, wspaniałymi plenerami (Bangkok, Australia) i sporą dawką humoru, niekiedy w formie błyskotliwej parodii. Wielkim atutem filmu jest niezwykle atrakcyjna, wielonarodowa obsada. Belgowi Jean - Claude Van Damme'owi partneruje niedawno zmarły wybitny aktor Raul Julia, a obok nich występują aktorzy wywodzący się z Hong Kongu (Ming - Na Wen), Australii (Kylie Minogue), Anglii (Simon Callow), Indii (Roshan Seth), a nawet rdzennych plemion indiańskich USA (Wes Studi).

The Bookshop was delighted to welcome Mary-Ann Constantine to celebrate the publication of her debut novel, Star-Shot. Mary was joined on the night by the artist Clive Hicks-Jenkins, who talks about his design for the cover.
Part fable, part mystery, Star-Shot is a stylish debut novel set in and around Cardiff's National Museum in a time that is almost, but not quite, our own.
Poignant and humorous, Star-Shot is an exploration of how objects and images can focus our grief and desire; it is also a meditation on the regenerative power of garden ponds, and the cosmic significance of frogs.
Beautifully illustrated with woodcut-style motifs by Clive Hicks-Jenkins, this is a subtle urban novel with a supernatural twist.
Mary-Ann Constantine studies Romantic period literature, with an emphasis on Wales and Brittany, at Aberystwyth University and has published widely in these fields since 1996.
Her short stories have appeared over a number of years in the New Welsh Review and Planet and her first collection, The Breathing, was published by Planet in 2008. Her second collection, All the Souls, was published by Seren in spring 2013.
Clive Hicks-Jenkins was born in Newport, south Wales, in 1951. The early part of his career was as a choreographer and theatre director, but since the 1990s he has become well known as a painter. He has been praised by critics in The Independent, Modern Painters and Art Review. Simon Callow has called him ‘one of the most individual and complete artists of our time' and Nicholas Usherwood in Galleries has described his work as ‘reflective, expressive painting of the highest order’.
He shows regularly with the Martin Tinney Gallery in Cardiff and Anglesey, and has had solo exhibitions at Christ Church Picture Gallery in Oxford, The Museum of Modern Art Wales, Newport Museum & Art Gallery, Anthony Hepworth Fine Art, Brecknock Museum, the National Library of Wales and Aberyswyth Arts Centre. His paintings, prints and artists’ books are in numerous public collections, including the National Museum of Wales, the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art Wales, the Contemporary Art Society for Wales, Llandaff Cathedral, Pallant House Gallery and the Methodist Church Collection of Modern Art, as well as private collections and libraries around the world. He is a Royal Cambrian Academician and an Honorary Fellow of Aberystwyth University School of Art.
