As Americans, we're lucky to have an abundance of national treasures. Some treasures, however, are more prominent than others ... But it's not dancing alive in the moment, and what a loss that would have been ... Possibly forgotten now is that two of Cole's leading interpreters were Gwen Verdon and Carol Haney, both of whom made more than a modicum of Broadway history. Sorry, the beloved “Singin’ in the Rain” isn’t the finest of the legendary MGM musicals. For my money, it’s a close second to “The Band Wagon,’’ which has better music, better dances, better direction, more lavish sets and costumes and a wittier script (by the same writers) ... The 3-D especially enhances Hermes Pan’s choreography for such superb dancers as Ann Miller, Tommy Rall, Bobby Van, Carol Haney and a very young Bob Fosse ... ....

The choreographer for that was Hermes PanAstaire's choreographer – who was persuaded by Fosse to let him do his own choreography for a number that he performed in the film with Carol Haney – later cast as Gladys in The Pajama Game.  ... Fosse's routine for "Steam Heat" – Carol Haney's number – had all the hallmarks of what became his signature style....
