Synopsis:
Rhoda which began in the fall of 1974, began each episode (at least the 1st season) with Valerie Harper stating: "My name is Rhoda Morgenstern. I was born in the Bronx, New York in December, 1941. I've always felt responsible for World War II. The first thing I remember liking that liked me back was food. I had a bad puberty, it lasted 17 years. I'm a high school graduate, I went to art school. My entrance exam was on a book of matches. I decided to move out of the house when I was 24, my mother still refers to this as the time I ran away from home. Eventually I ran to Minneapolis where it's cold, and I figured I'd keep better. Now I'm back in Manhattan. New York, this is your last chance!"
Rhoda is the successful spin-off to the classic The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Rhoda returns to New York where she eventually marries Joe Gerard, and later divorces him. She finds comfort from her sister, Brenda (Julie Kavner). Her biggest problem is her mother, Ida (Nancy Walker). In 1978, after 110 episodes, Rhoda went off the air. It being the second most successful spin-off from The Mary Tyler Moore Show - the first being Lou Grant.
During its short run Rhoda earned two Emmys (one for Valerie Harper in 1975, and one for Julie Kavner in 1978) and two Golden Globes (one for Harper and one for the series itself, both in 1975). All together it earned 11 Emmy nominations and 7 Golden Globe nominations. The series has since earned itself a reputation as a classic in its own right.
The series opens with the pilot episode featuring Rhoda Morgenstern traveling from her home in Minneapolis to New York, where she was born and raised, for a two-week vacation, staying with her younger sister, Brenda (Julie Kavner). While there, she meets Joe Gerard (David Groh), a handsome divorcé who owns a wrecking company and has a ten-year-old son, Donny, whom Brenda babysits. Following Brenda's prompting, Rhoda and Joe meet and develop an instant attraction to each other which leads to their dating nightly for the duration of her vacation. After an argument about their feelings for each other, Joe asks Rhoda to stay in New York City, which she does, initially moving in with Brenda at 332 E. 64th Street (actual exterior shots are of 332 East 84th Street, between 1st and 2nd avenues on the southeast end of the block.) Brenda, a bank teller, is an insecure person with low self-esteem with dating problems, similar to how Rhoda herself had experienced difficulty in dating in Minneapolis in the early years of The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
The first episode of Season 1, entitled "Joe", aired on CBS on Monday, September 9, 1974 at 9:30 PM. and immediately set a record by being the first and only television series ever to achieve a number-one Nielsen rating for its premiere pilot episode, defeating the ABC ratings juggernaut, Monday Night Football in the process. This record continues to stand after nearly 40 years.
Joe asks Rhoda to move in with him.
Rhoda and Brenda soon realize that the small studio apartment can't hold them both, so Rhoda moves in with their parents Ida (Nancy Walker) and Martin (Harold Gould) at their apartment in the Bronx. Ida and Martin are the stereotypical Jewish parents. Ida is overbearing, overprotective, benevolently manipulative, and desperate to ensure her daughters find a good husband. Martin is her dutiful, mild-mannered dad. Ida initially goes to great lengths to baby her daughter. When it becomes apparent Rhoda is sliding into a rut by occupying her childhood bedroom, Ida forces her to move out for her own good.
As the weeks go by, the relationship between Joe and Rhoda quickly blossoms. By the sixth episode, "Pop Goes the Question", an insecure Rhoda asks Joe where their relationship is heading. His response is to invite Rhoda to move in with him. After some careful thought, and consultation with her sister and father, Rhoda accepts Joe's invitation, but within minutes of moving in decides that rather than living together out of wedlock she prefers to be married. Rhoda attempts to convince Joe that they are very compatible and would be a happily married couple. After some hesitation, Joe agrees and a wedding is planned.

Rhoda S01E08 - Rhoda's Wedding: Part 1 : It's two days before Rhoda and Joe's wedding. One item still of contention between Rhoda and Ida is the wedding itself. Ida wants a larger wedding than Rhoda has planned, and takes steps to ensure she gets what she wants without Rhoda being able to do anything about it. Regardless of whether Rhoda or Ida gets her way on this item, the wedding may end up being just slightly larger than Rhoda planned if only because beyond Mary and Georgette being invited and coming in from Minneapolis for the festivities, three additional people decide to come from Minneapolis as well: Lou, Murray and Phyllis. There are logistical items to work out with these last minute arrivals. In addition, Rhoda is in excited anticipation about what her two favorite people in world, Joe and Mary, will think about each other. With many of the wedding guests convening at Ida and Martin's place for dinner, there are two conspicuously absent people, namely Rhoda and Joe, who have to do something important on this their.

Rhoda S04E17 - Gary and Ida : Gary's parents have moved to Miami Beach, which Gary believes means that he can spread his proverbial wings and be the person he wants to be without especially his mother's scrutiny. But Rhoda and Brenda soon realize that Gary's mother did many if not most of his day-to-day chores, so that Gary has no idea how to do such basic tasks as shop for food, cook, or even turn on his oven. They also quickly learn that Gary really has no intention of learning how to do these things if he can find other people to do them for him, such as Rhoda and Brenda, who become but don't want to be his surrogate mothers. As Rhoda mentions the problem to Jack, Jack thinks he knows how to get them out of their problem, namely by giving Gary the ultimate overbearing mother that he would never want: Ida. Their plan has some unexpected consequences.

Rhoda S02E06 - Brenda's Unemployment : Brenda's new life of being unemployed is making her look at her day-to-day routine differently in a good way, she figuring that she can do whatever she wants. She doesn't plan to look for a replacement job for a while, since she figures that money given to her by her father almost ten years ago and which has been in the bank since then, will keep her going for a while. However, she soon learns that that money has not earned nearly as much interest as she thought, meaning that she probably has enough to last for less than a month and that she'll have to start looking for a job immediately. She is confidant at the start of her job search, but quickly gives up on trying to find a job and as such gives up on life. Several people try to help Brenda manage her life, but it's one offer, one that Brenda probably would not even have considered if she was in a better state, that has Rhoda worried about how it will affect her long term future if she indeed does go through with it. But through ...

Rhoda S02E05 - The Party : The latest party Rhoda and Joe are hosting gets off to a bad start before it even begins as Rhoda and Joe have a fight before the first guest even arrives, since Joe, when he was married to Marian, was used to throwing formal gatherings, while Rhoda, who ordered pizza for this party, wants this one to be casual and informal. With no pizza in sight by the time the guests arrive, Rhoda tries her best to keep the mood light and relaxed, which she believes she is achieving, but which isn't the case. The party keeps getting worse and worse when Brenda's date, Nick, self appoints himself as the evening's entertainment by playing the accordion, then Susan's husband, psychiatrist Dr. Arthur Alborn, after being challenged as to the legitimacy of his profession, tries to prove his worth by conducting a party game masquerading as couples' therapy. The game does bring out some revelations, but it is the last which may set the ultimate tone of the party.

Rhoda S01E12 - I'm a Little Late, Folks : As she feels it's a little early in their marriage, Rhoda doesn't yet want to tell Joe that she's thinks she may be pregnant as she's two weeks late. Needing to tell someone, she unburdens her thoughts on Brenda, who can understand Rhoda's anxiety but who also selfishly wants to be an aunt. Eventually, Rhoda decides to tell Joe. Joe, in turn, also wants to be honest and tells Rhoda his news: that his business is going through a rough patch financially. Thus their news in combination may not be good timing. Regardless, they want to be true in their feelings about Rhoda's news, which they find is difficult as a baby is only currently a hypothetical. But an unexpected visit from Rhoda's perpetually pregnant friend, Susan Alborn, not only provides Rhoda with some information about what it's like to be pregnant and a mother, but also a quick appointment with her own doctor. The results from Rhoda's visit can turn her and Joe's discussion from a "hypothetical" to a "for certain".

I decided to move out of the house when I was 24, my mother still refers to this as the time I ran away from home. Eventually I ran to Minneapolis where it's cold, and I figured I'd keep better. Now I'm back in Manhattan. New York, this is your last chance!"

Rhoda S02E16 - Rhoda's Sellout : Rhoda is having pangs of self-doubt about her professional abilities, those doubts which are in turn affecting Joe's life. These doubts are because she can't come up with an idea for what has the potential to be the largest contract on which she's ever worked, that for a chain of twenty tuxedo rental stores. Even when she does come up with an idea, she isn't sure she likes it. However, by the time she has her meeting with the tuxedo store owner, Mr. Guthrie, Rhoda is totally sold on her concept. She is quickly and decisively shot down by the gruff and simple minded Mr. Guthrie, who knows exactly what he wants for his windows: two tall mannequins, two short mannequins, all four in tuxedos. Rhoda hates his idea, which can be accomplished by any window dresser. As Rhoda contemplates whether to take the job or not, her doubts once again affect her marriage to Joe, who has his own idea of what she should do and how she should behave in such a situation.

Rhoda, who isn't quite ready for Joe to meet her parents, thwarts Ida's plan of attack as she and Joe are meeting elsewhere for their date. Rhoda later learns the true extent to which Ida will go to meet Joe. When Rhoda and Joe discuss the issue, Joe suggests they make a day out of each meeting the other's parents, they having lunch with Joe's parents, and having dinner with Rhoda's parents that same day. Rhoda agrees, but she urges Ida not to make a fuss. Although nervous about meeting Joe's parents, it's something that they tell her about their own relationship that surprises her. Rhoda is equally as surprised by the Ida who shows up to dinner.
