Dartmoor is an area of moorland in south Devon, England. Protected by National Park status, it covers 954 square kilometres (368 sq mi).
The granite upland dates from the Carboniferous period of geological history. The moorland is capped with many exposed granite hilltops known as tors, providing habitats for Dartmoor wildlife. The highest point is High Willhays, 621 m (2,037 ft) above sea level. The entire area is rich in antiquities and archaeology.
Dartmoor is managed by the Dartmoor National Park Authority whose 22 members are drawn from Devon County Council, local district councils and Government.
Parts of Dartmoor have been used as military firing ranges for over 200 years. The public enjoy extensive access rights to Dartmoor (including restricted access to the firing ranges) and it is a popular tourist destination. The organisation responsible for tourism on Dartmoor is the Dartmoor Partnership.
Dartmoor includes the largest area of granite in Britain, with about 625 square kilometres (241 sq mi) at the surface, though most of it is under superficial peat deposits. The granite (or more accurately adamellite) was intruded at depth as a pluton into the surrounding sedimentary rocks during the Carboniferous period, probably about 309 million years ago. It is generally accepted that the present surface is not far below the original top of the pluton; evidence for this includes partly digested shale xenoliths, contamination of the granite and the existence of two patches of altered sedimentary rock on top of the granite. A considerable gravity anomaly is associated with the Dartmoor pluton as with other such plutons.[citation needed] Measurement of the anomaly has helped to determine the likely shape and extent of the rock mass at depth.

Land of Granite is inspirational film about Dartmoor National Park in Devon. The film features sweeping landscapes and the work of Dartmoor National Park Authority in conserving this special place. Sarah Oxton wrote the music to the film, which is performed by students from South Dartmoor Community College.

Wild Camping Tips, Dartmoor 2016
I found myself on the somewhat ominous moorland landscape just as Storm Katie arrived in Britain bringing chaos to large parts of the country. Within two hours of hiking I found myself battling high wind, torrential downpours and hailstorms. As lightning flashes appeared overhead and the third hailstorm hit me head on, I decided I wasn’t going to make much progress that day and hurriedly pitched my tent in the most sheltered spot I could find. I didn’t get much sleep that night what with the howling winds and constant rain and hail but the trip was far from a washout. I’ve wild camped in Dartmoor several times as well many other parts of the UK and Europe. I love wild camping, even when it is cold, wet and windy (which is quite often in the UK), but for me that’s the draw. I love the wild... -
Dartmoor: Belstone to Sticklepath Walk : Photo Guide
Belstone is quiet but charming village on the edge of Dartmoor. We were on a Guided Walk organised by the nearby Manor Sports & Craft Hotel near Okehampton. The guide was very good and pointed out many interesting features including the former Animal Pounds in Belstone. You descend into the valley from Belstone village green, cross a footbridge over the River Taw and climb a boggy hillside to the County Pole which marks the boundary with the Duchy of Cornwall's land. We then followed the valley edge towards Sticklepath, thus we only touched the edge of Dartmoor even so we had a brief experience of how windy and cold the top of Dartmoor can be even on a relatively mild day for December. Following a stonewall we went through a gate which led us to another footpath so we could recross the Riv... -

Dartmoor - A Photographers Perspective
The idea from the outset was to make a video that would help promote Dartmoor, in Devon, England. As a young lad I had many many happy days running around and exploring the Tors and surrounding moors. From family picnics to walking across the tors with friends I have some amazing memories and so it was a real pleasure to try and put something back in to Dartmoor. This video was created free of charge as a collaboration by people I am lucky to know and who wanted to have some fun filming in an inspiring location without the constraints involved with a commercial project. A chance, if you like, to let our hair down and explore some ideas in an environment a little different from our our normal filming environments. There is also Finches Foundry. The Trafalgar Trail and memorials to Quakers in the graveyard.
The walk was not particularly difficult but there were boggy sections so walking boots were required, wind/waterproof clothing were also necessary.
Remember never walk on Dartmoor without making full preparations even in good weather.

(Day 2 & 3) HIKING IN DARTMOOR NATIONAL PARK – 10 miles (16 km) each day
During these two days we will explore the hidden gems of Dartmoor National Park:
- Our guided hike (with a member of Dartmoor Walks this Way) will start besides the River Dart, at New Bridge (10 miles from Totnes).
- We will walk above the river gorge along an old carriage drive as far as Sharp Tor.
- We’ll then continue over a series of hills alongside the East Dart valley to Bellever. Here we’ll stop and rest to be ready for the next day!
(Next Day)
- After a good night’s sleep, we’ll trek onto the high moor, past the beautiful Fernworthy Reservoir.
- This will then lead us onto some high tors from which we’ll be able to admire some of the most stunning views of Dartmoor.
- One of the highlights of the day will be visiting part of Dartmoor’s copious Bronze Age legacy: standing stones, burial sites, a stone circle, etc. (Dartmoor boasts of having the largest Bronze Age legacy in the UK!)
