With a $40 billion drug-trafficking business, several corrupt and violent groups in Mexico have emerged over the years as they attempt to control more money, land, and power. With it comes a natural struggle amongst one another in what's led to countless deaths throughout the country. As members rise, leaders fall, and lives are lost, blood is constantly being shed in a society where murder is synonymous with success. We now present to you, the top 10 horrific Mexican cartel attacks.

Number 10: The San Fernando Massacres
August, 2010: Los Zetas—a notoriously ruthless Mexican drug cartel—intercepts buses trafficking 73 immigrants and executes all but one. They kidnap and slaughter the victims to deprive their rival, The Gulf Cartel, of the reinforcements they sent for. The lone survivor was an Ecuadorian man who was shot at the head but fortunately, the bullet missed his brain. After a shootout with Los Zetas, Mexican military units found the 72 bodies in a mass grave. This 2010 massacre took place along Highway 101 in San Fernando, Mexico and since then has been known as “The Highway of Death.”
Justice for the victims did not come, however, as the power and brutality of Los Zetas is greater than the law enforcement and government control. The Chief of Police investigating the massacre was murdered. Additionally, a year after the first massacre, 193 bodies of victim immigrants were found to have met the same violent fate. In 2011, the drug lord responsible for the massacres, Edgar “El Wache“ Montiel, was captured by Mexican Federal Police along with 80 other members of Los Zetas. “El Wache” Montiel bragged that some of the immigrants were forced to fight each other to death for the cartel members’ amusement.

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Mexico to see the effects of cartel oil theft firsthand.
Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels are diversifying. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil.
Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in US gas stations. As police fight the thieves, and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelines continues to climb.

Damn those cartels! We were really looking forward to exploring another area of Mexico and fishing at Sugar Lake but the night before we received information that two cartel groups were fighting around the perimeter of the lake so we had to cancel our plans and move to plan B, El Cuchillo Lake again!

Investigators are looking into the possibility of a Mexico drug cartel killing eight members of an Ohio family in a pre-planned execution. It has been four days since bodies of the Rhoden family were found in multiple homes. According to law enforcement, there were about 200 marijuana plants growing in some of the homes. David Begnaud reports from Pike County, Ohio.

Mexican Drug War
The Mexican Drug War (also known as the Mexican War on Drugs; Spanish: guerra contra el narcotráfico en México) is the Mexican theater of the Global War on Drugs, an ongoing low-intensityasymmetric war between the Mexican Government and various drug trafficking syndicates. Since 2006, when intervention with the Mexican military began, the government's principal goal has been to put down the drug-related violence. Additionally, the Mexican government has claimed that their primary focus is on dismantling the powerful drug cartels, rather than on preventing drug trafficking, which is left to U.S. functionaries.
Although Mexican drug cartels, or drug trafficking organizations, have existed for several decades, their influence has increased since the demise of the Colombian Cali and Medellín cartels in the 1990s. Mexican drug cartels now dominate the wholesale illicit drug market and in 2007 controlled 90% of the cocaine entering the United States. Arrests of key cartel leaders, particularly in the Tijuana and Gulf cartels, has led to increasing drug violence as cartels fight for control of the trafficking routes into the United States.

Drug cartel
A drug cartel is any criminal organization with the intention of supplying drug trafficking operations. They range from loosely managed agreements among various drug traffickers to formalized commercial enterprises. The term was applied when the largest trafficking organizations reached an agreement to coordinate the production and distribution of cocaine. Since that agreement was broken up, drug cartels are no longer actually cartels, but the term stuck and it is now popularly used to refer to any criminal narcotics related organization, such as those in Afghanistan, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Burma, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, France, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Laos, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Russia, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

With a $40 billion drug-trafficking business, several corrupt and violent groups in Mexico have emerged over the years as they attempt to control more money, land, and power. With it comes a natural struggle amongst one another in what's led to countless deaths throughout the country. As members rise, leaders fall, and lives are lost, blood is constantly being shed in a society where murder is synonymous with success. We now present to you, the top 10 horrific Mexican cartel attacks.

Number 10: The San Fernando Massacres
August, 2010: Los Zetas—a notoriously ruthless Mexican drug cartel—intercepts buses trafficking 73 immigrants and executes all but one. They kidnap and slaughter the victims to deprive their rival, The Gulf Cartel, of the reinforcements they sent for. The lone survivor was an Ecuadorian man who was shot at the head but fortunately, the bullet missed his brain. After a shootout with Los Zetas, Mexican military units found the 72 bodies in a mass grave. This 2010 massacre took place along Highway 101 in San Fernando, Mexico and since then has been known as “The Highway of Death.”
Justice for the victims did not come, however, as the power and brutality of Los Zetas is greater than the law enforcement and government control. The Chief of Police investigating the massacre was murdered. Additionally, a year after the first massacre, 193 bodies of victim immigrants were found to have met the same violent fate. In 2011, the drug lord responsible for the massacres, Edgar “El Wache“ Montiel, was captured by Mexican Federal Police along with 80 other members of Los Zetas. “El Wache” Montiel bragged that some of the immigrants were forced to fight each other to death for the cartel members’ amusement.

It has been four days since bodies of the Rhoden family were found in multiple homes. According to law enforcement, there were about 200 marijuana plants growing in some of the homes.
