Pete Rock was raised in Mount Vernon, but his face belongs on Mount Rushmore. The Chocolate Boy Wonder perfected an art form, inspired millions, and soundtracked a generation. By contrast, Teddy Roosevelt seems like a chump.
This is the man who Dilla told, “I wanted to be like you.” Kanye once called himself the “new Pete Rock.” But the original Pete Rock remains permanently vital. The evidence bangs in his latest opus, Petestrumentals 2, the sequel to the 2001 classic that helped define the hip-hop instrumental record. It marks the legend’s first album on Mello Music Group, a fitting union between the author of the boom-bap blueprint and the label that’s expanded upon his legacy.
Describing Pete Rock’s productions do them little justice. They resonate in your gut, heart, and brain. The title of one of these beats says it all: “Makes Me Feel Like.” You fill in the blanks based on your personal experience and current mood.
Petestrumentals 2 conjures memories of BBQ cookouts and 70s Blaxploitation scores, rattling summer jeep cruises and blunted Jamaican vacations. There’s a gorgeous requiem to Dilla (“Dilla Bounce (R.I.P),” where the originator pays tribute to the prodigy. You see the full range of Rock’s gifts on display: the meticulously chopped horns, unquantized drums, and air raid sirens. It contains the emotion of a thousand eulogies.
No record can’t be resurrected. There’s no sub-genre or era that can’t be converted into Rock’s singular brand of soul. His music is the closest thing we’ll ever get to a time-traveling DeLorean, effortlessly shifting between past, present, and future.
For the last 20 years, hip-hop heads have argued over the best Pete Rock original productions and remixes. Is it “They Reminisce Over You” or the “Shut ‘Em Down Remix?” Do you prefer Soul Survivor or the first Petestrumentals, his work with INI or the UN? His catalogue can’t be compressed into a bio; you need a book.
This is the latest chapter—an even 20 slaps and rhythmic levitations. It’s Pete Rock at his best, accelerating and kicking cosmic slop, extending wishes, hope, love, gritty drums and eternal wonder.

Peter Phillips (born June 21, 1970), better known by his stage name Pete Rock, is an American record producer, DJ and rapper. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s as one half of the critically acclaimed group Pete Rock & CL Smooth. After the duo went their separate ways, Rock continued with a solo career that has garnered him worldwide respect, though little in the way of mainstream success. Along with groups such as Stetsasonic, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots and Gang Starr, Rock played a major role in the merging of elements from jazz into hip hop music (also known as jazz rap). He is widely recognized as one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time, and is often mentioned alongside DJ Premier, the RZA, and J Dilla as one of the mainstays of 1990s East Coast hip hop production. Pete Rock is also the older brother and younger cousin, respectively, of rappers Grap Luva and the late Heavy D.
Pete Rock was born in The Bronx, New York, the sixth of seven children of Jamaican immigrant parents. His family moved to Mount Vernon, New York when he was seven years old. During high school, he met his future recording partner CL Smooth. According to Rock, his father was also a part-time DJ who had an impressive record collection. Rock would often accompany his father to a cricket club called Wembley in The Bronx and watch as he spun records for the guests. His first job was as a paperboy, in his neighborhood.

Patrick Douthit (born January 15, 1975 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina), better known as 9th Wonder is a hip hop record producer, record executive, DJ, lecturer, and lyricist from Durham, North Carolina, U.S. He began his career as the main producer for the group Little Brother, and has also worked with Mary J. Blige, Jean Grae, Wale, Jay-Z, Murs, Drake, Buckshot, Chris Brown, Destiny's Child, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu, Ludacris, Mac Miller, and David Banner. As of 2010, 9th Wonder raps under the name of 9thmatic.
9th Wonder has a smooth and soulful production style that relies on samples from artists such as Al Green and Curtis Mayfield. He attributes the bass lines that he uses in production to DJ Premier, Pete Rock and J Dilla, while he claims to have learned "Aahs" from RZA.[clarification needed]
9th Wonder's first significant career breakthrough came in 2003 when, as an up-and-coming producer, he released an unofficial remix album of Nas' 2002 album God's Son entitled God's Stepson. Released through internet outlets, the album garnered significant attention and acclaim. The producer has said that he was not thinking in terms of using it to generate a buzz or promote his skills and that at that point: "I never thought any of this of me as a producer was going to happen." The album has since been credited as starting the now regular trend for unofficial 'home-made' remixes of whole albums.

Pete Rock was raised in Mount Vernon, but his face belongs on Mount Rushmore. The Chocolate Boy Wonder perfected an art form, inspired millions, and soundtracked a generation. By contrast, Teddy Roosevelt seems like a chump.
This is the man who Dilla told, “I wanted to be like you.” Kanye once called himself the “new Pete Rock.” But the original Pete Rock remains permanently vital. The evidence bangs in his latest opus, Petestrumentals 2, the sequel to the 2001 classic that helped define the hip-hop instrumental record. It marks the legend’s first album on Mello Music Group, a fitting union between the author of the boom-bap blueprint and the label that’s expanded upon his legacy.
Describing Pete Rock’s productions do them little justice. They resonate in your gut, heart, and brain. The title of one of these beats says it all: “Makes Me Feel Like.” You fill in the blanks based on your personal experience and current mood.
Petestrumentals 2 conjures memories of BBQ cookouts and 70s Blaxploitation scores, rattling summer jeep cruises and blunted Jamaican vacations. There’s a gorgeous requiem to Dilla (“Dilla Bounce (R.I.P),” where the originator pays tribute to the prodigy. You see the full range of Rock’s gifts on display: the meticulously chopped horns, unquantized drums, and air raid sirens. It contains the emotion of a thousand eulogies.

Pete Rock needs no introduction. He's one of the most prolific & sought after producers of the first half of the 90's. A "Pete Rock remix" in those days meant a certified tag of quality, every group or artist wanted one: House of Pain ("Jump Around"), Jeru The Damaja ("Can't Stop The Prophet") or Public Enemy ("Night Train" & the seminal "Shut 'em Down"), for instance.
Also Nas ("The World Is Yours"), Run DMC ("Down With The King") & K-Solo ("Letterman", both the original and the remix) found their way to The Basement for productions by The Soul Brother.
Things slowed down a bit for him during the second half of the 90's, but by that time Pete already made two great albums and one EP with his then-partner-in-crime C.L. Smooth and while researching material for this sequence, the brilliance of 1992's "Mecca And The Soul Brother" came to surface once again; more than 20 years down the line and that album is still absolute aural perfection!
CL wasn't a slouch on those albums either, so all the more strange is it that, after the break-up in '94/'95, his vocal contributions are few & far between. A Greg Osby track here, a DJ Krush track there, but that's about it.
And with talks about a reunion album for some time now, I've decided to string all those PR&CL; B-sides, non-album tracks, soundtrack cuts and 'CL-guesting-on-a-Pete-Rock-solo-album' songs together in a sequence/an album, as there are quite a few floating around between '92 & now.
I took the blueprint from "The Main Ingredient" as a guide for the sequence, so interludes are all over the place, all taken from Pete's instrumental albums.
Nothing really too difficult to find, although "We Specialize" & "Multi Barz Of Fury" do qualify as such as the former's takin' off a 12-inch Japanese released only, while the latter's is just released as an afterthought on MP3 with CL droppin' a fantastic verse on a beat he took from Pete's "Surviving Elements" album. As the track sounded like a one-take-demo, I took parts from the original beat and thickened it up to make it sound more like a full song.
Another slight change is bein' found in "Fly 'til I Die" which originally has three verses from Talib Kweli (with the chorusses by CL), but I figured it would be odd to have an 'album' by our hosts featuring a song which doesn't contain them in the verses at all.
So I jetted around the web and found two acapellas by both PR & CL (from different songs) and replaced two verses from Kweli with those acapellas to make it sound more like a Pete & CL track ft. Kweli as guest.
Add to that the Pete Rock-produced "Who's The Mic Wrecka" for Da Youngsta'z (ft. CL as well, hence its inclusion here), the remix of "Lots Of Lovin' (included because it has BOTH another beat and rhymes compared to the original version) and the still-dope-as-fuck Pete solo collabo with Large Pro and you got a great tape to listen to.
I left out (the terrific!) "Don't Curse" by Heavy D. which also contain both PR & CL (as well as Grand Puba, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G. Rap & Q-Tip..), cause it sounded more (too much) as a Heavy D. track ft. guests and I also left out "Love Is A Battlefield" as I think the track's too wack to include. Google it if you don't believe me ;)
IMPORTANT NOTE: everything here presented is 128kbps. You want better sound quality, go buy the tracks! Always support the artists! These here are sequenced to provide a full spectrum of the artists' output and the many little jewels that have been made outside of the regular albums.
