February 15, 1933 (one month before being sworn in for his first term in office): In Miami, Florida, Giuseppe Zangara fired five shots at Roosevelt. Four people were wounded and Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was killed. Zangara was found guilty of murder and was executed March 20, 1933. Some researchers believe Cermak, not Roosevelt, was the intended target that day, as the mayor was a staunch foe of Al Capone's Chicago mob organization.
Anton Joseph "Tony" Cermak was an American politician of Czech origin who served as the mayor of Chicago, Illinois from 1931 until his assassination in 1933.

A silent newsreel (the soundtrack burned up in a fire at the National Archives) shows Mayor of Chicago, Anton Cermak is enjoying sunny Florida then lying, bandaged in a hospital bed after the assassination. The shooter, Giuseppe Zangara, is seen in custody.
While shaking hands with President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt at Bayfront Park in Miami, Florida, on February 15, 1933, Cermak was shot in the lung and seriously wounded when Zangara, who at the time was believed to have been engaged in an attempt to assassinate Roosevelt, hit Cermak instead. At the critical moment, Lilian Cross, a doctor's wife, hit Zangara's arm with her purse and spoiled his aim. In addition to Cermak, Zangara hit four other people, one of whom, a woman, also died of her injuries, Zangara told the police that he hated rich and powerful people, but not Roosevelt personally.
Cermak died on March 6, partly because of his wounds. On March 30, however, his personal physician, Dr. Karl A. Meyer, said that Cermak's primary cause of death was ulcerative colitis, commenting, "The mayor would have recovered from the bullet wound had it not been for the complication of colitis. The autopsy disclosed the wound had healed.. the other complications were not directly due to the bullet wound.

One of my favorite Chicago intersections is Jefferson, Cermak and Lumber in East Pilsen, just west of the Chicago River.
The street names themselves conjure Chicago's past. Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase, together with the Homestead Act, made real his vision of a nation peopled by agricultural yeomen. The forests of Michigan and Wisconsin traversed the Chicago River to the docks and vast lumber yards of Pilsen, where rail lines fanned out to the lumber-starved farms of Nebraska, Iowa and other parts of the Midwest. Mayor Anton Cermak's Czech origins mirrored those of many of Pilsen's early residents.

Anton (Tony) Joseph Cermak (Czech: Antonín Josef Čermák, pronounced [ˈantɔɲiːn ˈjɔzɛf ˈtʃɛrmaːk]; May 9, 1873 – March 6, 1933) was the mayor of Chicago, Illinois, from 1931 until his assassination by Giuseppe Zangara in 1933.
Born in Kladno, Austria-Hungary (now in the Czech Republic), Cermak emigrated with his parents to the United States in 1874. He began his political career as a precinct captain and in 1902 was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. Seven years later, he would take his place as alderman of the 12th Ward. Cermak was elected president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners in 1922, chairman of the Cook County Democratic Party in 1928, and mayor of Chicago in 1931. In 1928 he ran for the United States Senate and was defeated by Republican Otis F. Glenn, receiving 46% of the vote.
His mayoral victory came in the wake of the Great Depression and the deep resentment many Chicagoans had of Prohibition and the increasing violence resulting from organized crime's control of Chicago, typified by the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.

Chicago 1932 is a time of change in Chicago. Al Capone is in prison sentenced to 11 years for tax evasion. His pet mayor Big Bill Thompson, the cities last Republican mayor, is out replaced by Anton Cermak who puts together a multi ethnic coalition to capture the top spot. One of his first actions is to put together his own elite squad of police officers to get rid of gangsters, he doesn't like. The Capone organization seems to be in trouble. On December 19th detectives Harry Land and Harry Miller who are Cermaks ace hit men / detectives raid a betting parlor located on the fifth floor of an office building at 224 N. La Salle. On the way in they make a key mistake by enlisting a passing patrolman to back them up. In the ensuing raid a gun battle breaks out resulting in the death of gangsters the injury of detective Lang allegedly by Frank Nitti who is shot three times by Lang and critically wounded. Nitti survives and is put on trial in February 1933 for shooting Lang. That's when the true story emerges when testimony by Harry Miller reveals the true mission of the raid was to collect on a $15,000 contract put on Nitti by north side hoodlum Ted Newbury at the behest of Mayor Cermak. Then the officer that joined the raid testifies that Nitti was unarmed and Lang shot himself. Nitti is acquitted Miller and Lang are both fired. Lang never goes to jail for shooting Nitti supposedly because he threatens to blow the whistle on Cermak's corruption. In April of 1932 the mayor travels to Miami and is gunned down while attending a rally for president Roosevelt. The shooter is Joe Zangara a “deranged” gunman and one time marksman for the Italian army. His target was “supposedly” Roosevelt. There is an interesting book of historical fiction called True Detective by Max Allan Collins that revolves around that revolves around this incident. The shooter, Giuseppe Zangara, is seen in custody. While shaking hands with President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt at Bayfront Park in Miami, Florida, on February 15, 1933, Cermak was shot in the lung and seriously wounded when Zangara, who at the time was believed to have been engaged in an attempt to assassinate Roosevelt, hit Cermak instead. One of my favorite Chicago intersections is Jefferson, Cermak and Lumber in East Pilsen, just west of the Chicago River. The street names themselves conjure Chicago's past. Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase, together with the Homestead Act, made real his vision of a nation peopled by agricultural yeomen. The forests of Michigan and Wisconsin traversed the Chicago River to the docks and vast lumber yards of Pilsen, where rail lines fanned out to the lumber-starved farms of Nebraska, Iowa and other parts of the Midwest. Mayor Anton Cermak's Czech origins mirrored those of many of Pilsen's early residents. Join me for a look at a piece of old Chicago. -

On December 19th detectives Harry Land and Harry Miller who are Cermaks ace hit men / detectives raid a betting parlor located on the fifth floor of an office building at 224 N. La Salle. Feb 15, 1933, a deranged, unemployed brick layer named Giuseppe Zangara shouts Too many people are starving! and fires a gun at America's president-elect,Franklin D. Roosevelt. February 15, 1933 (one month before being sworn in for his first term in office): In Miami, Florida, Giuseppe Zangara fired five shots at Roosevelt. Four people were wounded and Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was killed. Zangara was found guilty of murder and was executed March 20, 1933. Some researchers believe Cermak, not Roosevelt, was the intended target that day, as the mayor was a staunch foe of Al Capone's Chicago mob organization.

The autopsy disclosed the wound had healed.. the other complications were not directly due to the bullet wound.

One of my favorite Chicago intersections is Jefferson, Cermak and Lumber in East Pilsen, just west of the Chicago River.
The street names themselves conjure Chicago's past. Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase, together with the Homestead Act, made real his vision of a nation peopled by agricultural yeomen. The forests of Michigan and Wisconsin traversed the Chicago River to the docks and vast lumber yards of Pilsen, where rail lines fanned out to the lumber-starved farms of Nebraska, Iowa and other parts of the Midwest. Mayor Anton Cermak's Czech origins mirrored those of many of Pilsen's early residents.

Chicago 1932 is a time of change in Chicago. Al Capone is in prison sentenced to 11 years for tax evasion. His pet mayor Big Bill Thompson, the cities last Republican mayor, is out replaced by Anton Cermak who puts together a multi ethnic coalition to capture the top spot. One of his first actions is to put together his own elite squad of police officers to get rid of gangsters, he doesn't like. The Capone organization seems to be in trouble.
On December 19th detectives Harry Land and Harry Miller who are Cermaks ace hit men / detectives raid a betting parlor located on the fifth floor of an office building at 224 N. La Salle. On the way in they make a key mistake by enlisting a passing patrolman to back them up. In the ensuing raid a gun battle breaks out resulting in the death of gangsters the injury of detective Lang allegedly by Frank Nitti who is shot three times by Lang and critically wounded.
Nitti survives and is put on trial in February 1933 for shooting Lang. That's when the true story emerges when testimony by Harry Miller reveals the true mission of the raid was to collect on a $15,000 contract put on Nitti by north side hoodlum Ted Newbury at the behest of Mayor Cermak. Then the officer that joined the raid testifies that Nitti was unarmed and Lang shot himself. Nitti is acquitted Miller and Lang are both fired.
Lang never goes to jail for shooting Nitti supposedly because he threatens to blow the whistle on Cermak's corruption. In April of 1932 the mayor travels to Miami and is gunned down while attending a rally for president Roosevelt. The shooter is Joe Zangara a “deranged” gunman and one time marksman for the Italian army. His target was “supposedly” Roosevelt.
There is an interesting book of historical fiction called True Detective by Max Allan Collins that revolves around that revolves around this incident.

Chicago. November 9, 1932. FDR has just been elected president, and the repeal of Prohibition is inevitable. But later that night, Ness and his men smash another of Capone's breweries. Agent Youngfellow asks Eliot, ""Are we going to be out of work?"" But Ness tells him no-- after all, bootleg booze was only a part of the Capone empire: there's still narcotics, gambling, prostitution, protection rackets, etc. Capone may start muscling in on legitimate businesses; in fact, Ness is having a meeting with Mayor Anton Cermak-- they want to ""clean up this town"" before the Chicago World's Fair in the spring of 1933.
Miami. Giuseppe ""Joe"" Zangara, a man with homicidal tendencies, decides to kill the president. A newspaper vendor is hawking his papers; Zangara talks to him, and is surprised to learn that Hoover is no longer president. But Zangara sticks to his crazy idea to kill the president, no matter who he is.
Nitti's plenty sore! Mayor Cermak's stepped-up law enforcement has cut deeply into Nitti's operations. In the Montmartre club, Nitti takes a newspaper with a big photo of Cermak on the front page, and tacks it to the wall-- then Nitti takes out his 6-shooter and blasts 7 bullets into the photo.
Nitti talks to 4 of his lieutenants. Frank Diamond says they better rub the Mayor out when he's out of town, or Capone won't like it; Louis Campagna knows of a good hitman in Florida: Fred ""the Caddy"" Croner, so-named because he poses as a golfer and keeps his rifle in a golf bag. The Mayor will be in Miami on February 15, the same time President FDR will be visiting there. While Nitti is planning Cermak's hit, in Miami Joe Zangara is planning to shoot the president.

Feb 15, 1933, a deranged, unemployed brick layer named Giuseppe Zangara shouts Too many people are starving! and fires a gun at America's president-elect,Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Roosevelt had just delivered a speech in Miami's Bayfront Park from the back seat of his open touring car when Zangara opened fire with six rounds. Five people were hit. The president escaped injury but the mayor of Chicago, Anton Cermak, who was also in attendance, received a mortal stomach wound in the attack.
Several men tackled the assailant and might have beaten him to death if Roosevelt had not intervened, telling the crowd to leave justice to the authorities. Zangara later claimed I don't hate Mr. Roosevelt personallyI hate all officials and anyone who is rich. He also told the FBI that chronic stomach pain led to his action: Since my stomach hurt I want to make even with the capitalists by kill the president. My stomach hurt long time [sic].
Zangara's extreme action reflected the anger and frustration felt among many working Americans during the Great Depression. At the time of the shooting, Roosevelt was still only the president-elect and had yet to be sworn in. His policies remained untested, but reports of Roosevelt's composure during the assassination attempt filled the following day's newspapers and did much to enforce Roosevelt's public image as a strong leader.
Unsubstantiated reports later claimed that Zangara's real target had been Cermak and hinted at Zangara's connection to organized crime in Chicago. Zangara was initially tried for attempted murder and sentenced to 80 years in prison, but when Mayor Cermak later died of his wounds, Zangara was retried and sentenced to death. Zangara died on the electric chair on March 5, 1933.

Shpongle is an English psychedelic music project formed in 1996. The group includes Simon Posford and Raja Ram. The duo are considered to be one of the progenitors of the psybient genre - a genre combining world music with psychedelic trance and ambient. Their musical style combines traditional music from all over the globe and vocals with contemporary western synthesizer-based psychedelic music. When asked to describe Shpongle's music, Posford has responded that it is "like nothing you've ever heard before." Shpongle's first track, "Vapour Rumours", was released on TIP Records' Infinite Excursions compilation in 1996. Their debut album, Are You Shpongled?, was released in 1998 on Twisted Records. On September 9, 2014, Simon Posford confirmed that work has begun on a sixth album.
Posford is generally responsible for the synthesizers, studio work, and live instrumentation while Raja Ram contributes broad musical concepts and flute arrangements. Raja Ram stated in an interview that "Shpongle" is an umbrella term for feeling positive and euphoric emotions. Shpongle's music is heavily influenced by psychedelic experiences and frequently makes use of sonic textures that approximate psychedelic states as well as vocal samples relating to consciousness expansion, hallucinations, and altered states of awareness. For example, the track, "A New Way to Say 'Hooray,'" contains a vocal sample of Terence McKenna describing the effects of DMT, and the most popular song from their first album, 'Divine Moments of Truth', alludes to the abbreviation DMT.

In his early twenties, he moved to Chicago becoming bodyguard and trusted factotum for Johnny Torrio, head of a criminal syndicate illegally supplying alcohol, and politically protected through the Unione Siciliane. A conflict with the West Side gang was instrumental in Capone's rise and fall, Torrio had been precipitated into retirement after West Side gunmen almost killed him, thereby bringing about Capone's succession. He expanded the bootlegging business through increasingly violent means, but his mutually profitable relationships with mayor William Hale Thompson and the city's police, meant Capone seemed safe from law enforcement. Apparently revelling in the attention, such as the cheers when he appeared at ball games, Capone made donations to various charities and was viewed by many to be a "modern-day Robin Hood". However, the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre of West Siders damaged Chicago's image, leading influential citizens to demand action from central government.

The adherents of the PRI party are known in Mexico as priísta and the party is nicknamed el tricolor because of its use of the colors green, white and red.
