The Tiananmen (simplified Chinese: 天安门; traditional Chinese: 天安門; pinyin: Tiān'ānmén; literally: "Gate of Heavenly Peace") is a famous monument in Beijing, the capital of the China. It is widely used as a national symbol. First built during the Ming Dynasty in 1420, Tiananmen is often referred to as the front entrance to the Forbidden City. However, the Meridian Gate (午门) is the first entrance to the Forbidden City proper, while Tiananmen was the entrance to the Imperial City, within which the Forbidden City was located. Tiananmen is located to the north of Tiananmen Square, separated from the plaza by Chang'an Avenue.
The Chinese name of the gate (天安门/天安門, pronounced Tiān'ānmén), is made up of the Chinese characters for "heaven," "peace" and "gate" respectively, which is why the name is conventionally translated as "The Gate of Heavenly Peace". However, this translation is somewhat misleading, since the Chinese name is derived from the much longer phrase "receiving the mandate from heaven, and pacifying the dynasty." (受命于天,安邦治國). The Manchu transliteration, Abkai elhe obure duka, lies closer to the original meaning of the gate and can be literally translated as the "Gate of Heavenly Peacemaking." The gate has a counterpart in the northern end of the imperial city called Di'anmen (地安门, Dì'ānmén; Manchu: Na i elhe obure duka), which may be roughly translated as the "Gate of Earthly Peacemaking."
Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has a land area of 1104 km2 and shares its northern border with Guangdong Province of Mainland China. With around 7.2 million inhabitants of various nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.
After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Surrender of Japan, the British resumed control. In the 1980s, negotiations between the United Kingdom and the China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems. Disputes over the perceived misapplication of this principle have contributed to popular protests, including the 2014 Umbrella Revolution.

A man who stood in front of a column of tanks on June 5, 1989, the morning after the Chinese military had suppressed the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 by force, became known as the Tank Man, Unknown Protester or Unknown Rebel. As the lead tank maneuvered to pass by the man, he repeatedly shifted his position in order to obstruct the tank's attempted path around him. The incident was filmed and seen worldwide.
Currently, there is no reliable information about the identity or fate of the unknown rebel.
The incident took place near Tiananmen on Chang'an Avenue, which runs east-west along the north end of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China, on June 5, 1989, one day after the Chinese government's violent crackdown on the Tiananmen protests. The man stood in the middle of the wide avenue, directly in the path of a column of approaching Type 59 tanks. He wore a white shirt and black trousers, and he held a shopping bag. As the tanks came to a stop, the man gestured towards the tanks with his bag. In response, the lead tank attempted to drive around the man, but the man repeatedly stepped into the path of the tank in a show of nonviolent action. After repeatedly attempting to go around rather than crush the man, the lead tank stopped its engines, and the armored vehicles behind it seemed to follow suit. There was a short pause with the man and the tanks having reached a quiet, still impasse.
Tiananmen Square is a large city square in the centre of Beijing, China, named after the Tiananmen gate (Gate of Heavenly Peace) located to its North, separating it from the Forbidden City. The square contains the monuments to the heroes of the revolution, the great hall of people, the National Museum of China, and the Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall (with Mao's embalmed body). Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic in the square on Oct. 1, 1949, an anniversary still observed there. Tiananmen Square is within the top ten largest city squares in the world (440,500 m2 – 880×500 m or 109 acres – 960×550 yd). It has great cultural significance as it was the site of several important events in Chinese history.
Outside China, the square is best known in recent memory as the focal point of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, a pro-democracy movement which ended on 4 June 1989 with the declaration of martial law in Beijing by the government and the shooting of several hundred, or possibly thousands, of civilians by soldiers.
Jeff Widener (born August 11, 1956 in Long Beach, California) is an American photographer, best known for his image of the Tank Man confronting a column of tanks in Tiananmen Square during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 which made him a nominated finalist for the 1990 Pulitzer.
Through the years, he has covered assignments in over 100 countries involving civil unrest and wars to social issues. He was the first photojournalist to file digital images from the South Pole. In 1987, he was hired as Associated Press Picture Editor for Southeast Asia where he covered major stories in the region from the Gulf War to the Olympics. Other beats included East Timor, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Burma, Syria, Jordan, India, Laos, Vietnam, Pakistan and many more.
Widener is now based in Hamburg, Germany.
Jeff grew up in Southern California where he attended Los Angeles Pierce College and Moorpark College majoring in photojournalism. In 1974 he received the Kodak Scholastic National Photography Scholarship beating out 8,000 students from across the United States. The prize included a study tour of East Africa.

Another China myth of Western media: Tankman at Tiananman Square, another case study of the art of spinning. Now let the facts speak for themselves. This clip is widely known to Western public as the "evidence" of Chinese government's "suppression" of democratic movement. Once again, the opposite is true. This actually proves why there was not a "crack down." If it had been a crack down, why not arrest the guy? why not shoot him? Remember this video was shot without the knowledge of the PLA soldiers. Were PLA soldiers mindless butchers as western media depicted? NO!! Did PLA soldiers shoot indiscriminately? NO again!! There is NO DENIAL a civilian was provoking PLA soldiers on duty. There is NO DENIAL PLA soldiers showed astonishing restraint and professionalism, the coolness o...

Famous Tourist Site In Beijing, China located at Tiananmen Square. This is the world's biggest public square. It can hold over 1 million people at one time. Many events affecting China have happened on this site.
My Beijing guide Sam gave me a tour of Tiananmen Square, the third largest square in the world, which can hold 600,000 people. It was the site of Chairman Mao's famous speech in 1949 announcing the creation of the People's Republic of China. It was also the site of the 1989 pro-democracy protests where many civilians were killed. The Square features the Tiananmen Gate (entrance to Forbidden City), National Museum of China, Chairman Mao's Mausoleum, Great Hall of the People, and the Monument to the People's Heroes.

The Great Wall of China is a must-see and we saw it from Badaling. However - no one tells you that there is something YOU SHOULDN"T WEAR on your visit! Plus, it's easy to get some great pictures despite the crowds.... IF you follow my tips. Why was I frustrated travel to the Great Wall at Badaling? Because it took a long time for us to (1) Walk to the subway station (2) Transfer and get to our destination subway station where we then had to (3) get slightly lost trying to find the bus station before (4) finally finding the station and getting in line for what we hoped was the right bus and then (5) riding the bus to the Badaling Great Wall area after a girl beside us vomited because of motion sickness and then (6) walking for 15 minutes to get to the actual village/town at the ...
We visit the home to another world wonder: Beijing, China! Home of the Great wall of China! So we put together a short travel guide montage of all the things we got up to when visiting Beijing China. Highlights include: Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City Imperial Palace, Beijing Temple of Heaven, Peking Duck, Donghuamen Night Market, and the Great Wall of China near Beijing. Everyone should check out the Great Wall of China, and if you do decide to go; there are many different parts of the wall you can enter. We decided to go to Mutianyu part of the Great Wall, instead of Badaling. Badaling is filled with huge crowds you won't be able to enjoy the wall as much compared to Mutianyu. It took us a while to get to the Wall! Our first bus from the hotel was about half an hour, then we got onto...

Kalashnikov's gonna tell you a litle bed time story now
The kind of story you don't want to tell your children
at night
A story were thousands of people died
The place was China
And the year 1989
A bunch of students
Occupied a square
In the center of town
Asking for no much than
Peace and democrocy
But China is a big country
They don't want no fucking
Pussy democracy there
So they sent the army
Tiananmen Tiananmen
Kill another yellow man
It Was in the first hours
of the morning
When the tanks and the soldiers
Start to shoot over
Tiananmen square
The great Majority
of the students
Were only sleeping at the time
they died without knowing
that the men Who killed
them was their own blood
Tiananmen Tiananmen
