The digging stick is a prehistoric plow that is fashioned with handles for pulling or pushing and is also a precursor of most modern agricultural handtools. In archaeology and anthropology, digging stick, or sometimes yam stick, is the term given to a variety of wooden implements used primarily by subsistence-based cultures to dig out underground food such as roots and tubers or burrowing animals and anthills. They may also have other uses in hunting or general domestic tasks.
They are common to the Indigenous Australians but also other peoples worldwide. This tool normally consists of little more than a sturdy stick which has been shaped or sharpened and perhaps hardened by being placed temporarily in a fire. It is a simple device, and has to be tough and hardy in order not to break.
In Mexico and the Mesoamerican region, the digging stick was the most important agricultural tool throughout the region.
The coa stick normally flares out into a triangle at the end and is used for cultivating maize. It is still used for agriculture in some indigenous communities, with some newer 20th-century versions having the addition of a little metal tip.
Today I created a Primitive Digging stick with a fire-hardened tip. This stone age tool is incredibly efficient at digging up root vegetables, slow moving animals such as grubs, slugs, and worms, as well as tree roots which can be used as cordage and lashing. I began by sawing off a dead free standing limb approximately 4 feet in length. I think processed the limb with my hatched, removing knots, and the bark. The stave was then given an asymmetrical wedge on one end. The wedge end was then placed near a small flame and repeatedly fire-hardened and polished on a large stone. At the end of this effort I had the completed digging stick, modeled after those used by primitive aborigines. The efficiency of this tool is truly amazing, I could dig holes with just a fraction of the effort ...
With Spring right around the corner, I wanted to make a digging stick to take advantage of the dandelions that will popping up, and harvest some of their roots. Wood used is Osage Orange.
A short clip showing participants on a Bush Lore Wilderness Survival course at work making digging sticks to aid in food procurement, protection and general use. The timber resources being used are sustainably harvested and fully utilised in accord with a strict policy of respectful interaction with the natural environment. Reading about or watching how to do this only ever amounts to partial understanding, complete learning is not realised until you actually do it yourself. You must get your hands dirty to really 'know' natural materials.

In this video we show you how to make a Primitive Digging Stick using only fire and flint. A digging stick is a very useful tool and is very efficient for digging up roots for food, as well as tree and shrub roots from which we can make cordage. One pointy side and one flat side, "Keep it simple stupid" rings very true:o) The trowel was a fail but I have strengthen it so it will make an appearance again at a later date.
I find this stick on a boulder nearby the 9 inch trackway. I have been finding places where something was digging with a stick in other areas nearby. This is why I call the 9 inch styx.
Making tools Sago scrapers and digging stick (2.16) Using an adze and a machete, Damien Mungun carves the handles for a pair of sago scrapers; while Lucas Mapat works on a digging stick (giving special attention to the end of the handle, which he shaped like the head of a spear). They then cut replaceable bamboo strikers for the scrapers. Since the latter (always two) will also function as a matched pair of musical instruments (one male, the other female), their precise length is important. The strikers are then tied to the handles using strips of cane, and checked to ensure that they sound right. For high resolution images and a wealth of additional material go to johntyman.com

My youngest son and I digging in the garden. We are testing out a large digging stick that can not only dig root crops, but can also be used similarly to a broad fork. It is made out of a young Norway maple tree, using a Japanese saw, a machete, and a file. It is not as tough or efficient as a broad fork, but not bad for something I could make myself out of natural materials.

I put a good deal of thought into protective fencing after last years garden was very much destroyed by deer and rabbits. The rabbits actually built a burrow nest at the gardens edge and the babies took up permanent residency. The deer always beat me to the first ripe tomato by picking them green, and usually destroy my best plants early. Take a look at my "Deer that ate my tomatoes" video and you will see what I have to put up with. Before I put this fence up the deer had already walked through the onions I had put in early. I love having the deer visit, and we watch the rabbits play in the evening, but gardens are a lot of work and I would rather they stick to their natural food sources rather than eating mine! Watch to the end as I learned a few things along the way that will help. It w...
